Irreguardlessly, I also concur dishearteningly, to those of you peoples to whom it mayeth concern. If /u/walrusbot's hypotheses are right, and not, in fact, left, then we, as a herd of people, can thrice times over, sound at least $200% more genius-istic, thus allowing the average persons intelligence to raise from $50% to $75%. If we can truly create an ecosystem where the average intelligence is above average, then whom no's what we can accomplish?
I jot down on my papers the most random and ludicrous shit in order to achieve a word count that is higher than what I would have otherwise achieved, had I typed such things in the same manner in which I normally speak.
"To elaborate, when faced with the task of writing a literary essay, my usual method is to be exceptionally verbose and type in what seems like random babbling in order to consistently achieve the rather daunting task of reaching the assigned word count minimum."
There, just tripled the word count of your sentence.

On university level it's more difficult to actually be below a specified word count and still explain everything you want to say. When your grade depends on how much information you can press into 4000 words, then the apostrophe game is real.

I've done them, it is. You basically have to finagle your way into being the editor. Or you can be the one who submits the paper, so that you hold the final version. Either way, you then have to make everything readable, while sounding like different people wrote it, without making the illiterates in your group mad at you.

As a non native English speaker it's a shame that native English people don't use these beautiful words more often. I fucking love the word "thus" and thus I use as often as possible.
One of my favorite parts of going to school for mathematics was writing out these long, grueling assignments in the most eloquent ways possible. Using words like "thus" fits so nicely and naturally when writing something as logical as a proof, where every line is a string of deduction leading into the next, so much so that it would look preposterous not to. Although I suppose nothing is as satisfying as the final "QED" to wrap everything up in a nice bow.
Personally, I believe in writing in as complex a manor as necessary. If you truly feel like using a certain phrase clarifies what you're saying, then I think you should use it. If it doesn't contribute, simplify it.
[deleted] ยท -6 points ยท Posted at 02:23:14 on December 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 12:30:52 on December 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
"Thus" is perfectly common in university level work, and I see it used all the time. It's also shorter than most of the alternatives.
Where are you from? Perhaps it's just more common in the UK.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:10:44 on December 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I'm a lawyer from the US. There are different styles in legal writing, and "thus" isn't at all uncommon... but it always feels a little bit flowery to me. I try to write as simply as I can, and I generally stay away from it.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:02:48 on December 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It's not considered a particularly flowery word here at university level. When kids use it before then it comes across as them just wanting to use a new word they learned but it's used all the time in books and journals over here.
So while your comment may apply in the US (I have no clue), I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it.
[deleted] ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 21:51:24 on December 7, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Usually it makes you look dumber if you use this and don't need to
I do this with "whilst" and refering to people as "one" like "one would do this." I don't even know where I picked it all up but I've been doing it since middle school.

But I guess this meme is cool too.

"Thus" never simplifies. It's highfalutin bullshit.

using thus in an academic paper is not pretentious
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:40:13 on December 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah, it's about equivalent to "therefore."
[deleted] ยท -8 points ยท Posted at 02:22:28 on December 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Wrong.
Itstheonlyway_k ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:27:37 on December 8, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Thus you will seem relatable.
