[deleted] ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 06:09:20 on August 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Lol my dad had Asperger's and my mom never finished the 8th grade and they were generally unsupportive and hindering when it came to most issues because they were ill equipped to raise a child. When I saw the /r/videos post "We need more mentors like this" or whatever with the taekwondo teacher emotionally supporting his young student when be failed to break a board, I cried for the first time in years because I realized just how important it is to have strong, reliable, caring role models, and how drastically my own parents failed to meet that criteria haha

Tapoke ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:12:56 on August 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

I used to be like that, but I recently lived a raw moment of brotherly love with 2 friends after a night of drinking.

Since then, I have cried watching the last episode of Game of Thrones (promise me, Ned, promise me...), and I got to the verge of tears while reading a scene in a book I had already read while a teen.

In hindsight, both scenes are extremely similar. A dying mother letting her child to the care of an incredibly badass knight while making him promise to keep it's indentity secret to save it's life.

So, maybe I was shook by my friends feelings for me (which I always doubted for some reasons), or maybe this particular situation strikes my chords?

Erh, I mean, me too thanks.

I would say that's pretty true, at least for me. I was in the gifted program in elementary school, and that kinda fucked with my work ethics as I could accomplish things easily without any effort. When I got to high school my bad work ethics really fucked me over.

RabidHexley ยท 44 points ยท Posted at 19:40:04 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It's like there's this natural intelligence dead zone, where you're talented enough that all the early stuff is way too easy and you never develop proper work ethic. But it inevitably catches up to you because you're not really hot shit, and you gotta sink or swim. With many folks sinking.

On either side you got the people who had to work hard enough to develop work ethic and really cultivate their talents. And on the other you have those real upper-end of the bell curve folks where things never get truly difficult, and challenges are just road blocks waiting to be crushed.

Though I guess this depends on the kind of program kids are put into. It feels like if you notice that your kid is doing better than average you really should make a point of really challenging them (within reason) early on so they gain these skills as soon as possible.

Puggpu ยท 33 points ยท Posted at 18:40:00 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I'm sort of similar. I learned how to read very quickly and later when I couldn't pick up math or languages easily I struggled a lot because I wasn't used to having to study a lot.

Puggpu ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 19:21:50 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I just finished my freshman year of college. I got all A's but failed one class my first semester. I think the important thing to realize is that you have to study a lot of time out of class to make up for the shorter classes. Also don't skip class just because you can.

ELI5_MODS_SUCK_ASS ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 21:00:06 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

College basics shoulden't be terrible in your first year if you've been the whole "Gifted" routine throughout your K-12. I mean you have to study (in most classes) and I know you might say "I've never studied! I'm going to procrastinate it!" and like you will some things, but it's a different environment and some light study sessions will just make sense in the atmosphere.

Just don't take like Organic Chemistry first semester dumbass.

Same but with math, I was able to do every problem in my head up until high school, then We had problems that required memorizing formulas and using calculators. That was the first time I actually had to listen to what the teacher told us to do instead of just going over some weird method I made in my head.

epicblob ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 19:41:35 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Same here. I've been in a gifted/accelerated program since like 3rd grade and didn't develop a work ethic until my junior year.

Huttingham ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 10:26:50 on August 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

More or less same for me. That along with the fact that I never strove for perfect grades, so a B was upsetting, but nothing I couldn't live with. Hence why they call me the King of the Losers. I was right outside the top 10%, mate. That applies to more or less every aspect of my life.

I'm 8 years into my 4 year degree because I never took school work seriously, everything just sort of came easy. Yay Gifted kids that grow up to be idiot adults!

SonicSpeed54 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 17:02:53 on August 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

This is what I'm currently scared about. I was in the gifted program since Kindergarten, hell I even skipped 1st grade. But I'm about to start my freshman year and I did completely horrible in 7th grade, and I screwed up my 2nd semester of 8th grade pretty bad as well, although not for all the same reasons. I've been praised as "Gifted" and "Smart" since before I started schooling, but the fact that school is starting to require some more effort that I'm not putting forward, combined with the fact that my self-esteem is low due to my barely average recent grades (and feeling like I let so many people who care about me down), and my time management is terrible, I'm in a state where I honestly hope I don't fuck up and waste my entire time in high school.

liojki ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:49:11 on August 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I'll tell you what I'd tell myself if I were a freshman starting High school:

Even with minimal effort you'll probably be able to pass. I put in very low effort and was still able to take advanced classes and graduate with an advanced degree, albeit with somewhat mediocre grades.

But if you wanna make most of your high school experience, you have to try. Don't let yourself look back with regrets, thinking 'I could have done so much, I could have been a top student if only I had tried a little bit more.'

My biggest regret of high school is that I didn't complete a full IB degree. It required a lot of work and taking a lot of advanced classes and I was only missing two classes by the end of senior year. I keep kicking myself for not going all the way, putting in the effort so I could get it.

So my advice is this: do all of your homework. Seriously, do all of it. You seem like me, the kinda person who has difficulty with motivation and dedication. Pushing yourself to complete your homework everyday will be really good for you, as it will give you structure and a goal. I wasted a lot of time in high school on the internet so I would say take at least one hour everyday to study and focus on school.

That being said above, my second biggest regret is not getting involved more in high school. Studying is important but enjoying your time is just as important. I had some friends that I would spend time with, but I would often just stay home and do nothing. High school is a great time, it is your last bit of childhood. Enjoy it. Spend time with people you care about. Have fun. Get involved in after school activities and club.

What I'm writing probably isn't coming out as eloquently as I would like, I'm probably being redundant, and I'm missing a lot of points I would like to address, but they all boil down to one point: don't waste your time. Use it wisely, do your best, have fun. High school can either be terrible or great; it all depends on what you make of it.

Good luck. While you're starting your first year of high school, I'll be starting my first year of college. We'll both try our best.

And do your fucking homework.

Same, except I was able to slide through highschool honors and AP classes without any effort, got a scholarship to college, and dropped out because I hadn't learned to make myself do homework (in HS, my parents' presence was the motivation). Now I'm in an IT job that I'm only in because my mother works at the company and she recommended me, and here I am slacking off, reading Reddit instead of running those Ethernet cables.

It worked out weird but okay for me. I was told I was very smart all throughout growing up. Even then I had a decent work ethic until about...11th grade (by USA system). After that I got sick of school so my work ethic tanked.

I still got pretty decent grades throughout the rest of high school and college, but I was never "top of the class" good anymore (plus my major wasn't one of the notoriously difficult ones like engineering).

Are you me? Do you have any advice for the future?

skulblaka ยท 22 points ยท Posted at 20:23:42 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Learn how to study before it's too late. It caught up to me in my senior year of high school when all the "normal kids" were suddenly getting better grades than me and not trying to cheat off my tests anymore. If you're still in high school, you can talk to your teachers/counselors about it and they'll probably hook you up, if you're out of high school already then you can probably find lessons on the internet? I dunno. I learned it the hard way with two years of sleep deprivation, depression and drug abuse, you don't want to do it that way. There are actual classes and lessons out there on study habits and work ethic, go look into them. And actually do what they tell you to.

Claumax ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 20:34:19 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

You really are me, holy crap, currently on my first year of depression and sleep depravation. Thanks for the advice, I don't know why I didn't try looking for advice, I just thought I was supposed to figure it out by myself. Edit: you are another dude, but thanks, this looks like a common problem.

skulblaka ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 20:39:39 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Most things that you're supposed to "just figure out on your own" have someone that would be glad to teach it to you. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you're struggling with something - that's another thing that my public school teachers always tried to impress upon me and I never listened to.

Claumax ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:50:17 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I feel better now, sometimes I feel helpless about this type of things. It's nice to remember that people are always happy to give advice. :)

MGLLN ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 20:58:36 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Learn to study before it's too late. Not studying and just "cruising" (as i like to call it) will catch up with you eventually, unless you're a literal genius/prodigy.

One size doesn't fit all. So, I suggest learning what studying techniques fit/help you the most. I would also suggest learning multiple studying techniques.

and the advice given by /u/skulblaka is pretty good

Auctoritate ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:19:56 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I never studied for anything either, but I did read the classroom textbooks if there wasn't anything else to do. It was useful for chemistry, but English was fucking terrible. Literally nothing new from the previous year. I didn't pay attention to any of the lectures or anything because I just remembered everything from last year.

No wonder we're dropping in English grades.

MasonNowa ยท 27 points ยท Posted at 18:29:25 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I think the suggestion isnt negative reinforcement, but positively reinforcing traits like working hard rather than something passive like intelligence.

Polaritical ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:27:23 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Actually it isnt about positive vs negative. Smart is something you either are or aren't. Rather Ghana praising a child for being smart, which is like praising a child for being tall or having brown hair, you should praise them for specific tasks and accomplishments. Instead of being smart, the thing being praised is them always doing their homework or getting a food grade.

TheLightSeba ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:56:26 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

yeah a lot of effort goes into making high grade food, thats why its so expensive

bobojojo12 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:25:51 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Smart is something you either are or you aren't

Yeah nah

sicinfit ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:13:06 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The difference is realising what is tangible in the real world and encourage that instead. Intelligence is useless unless you can translate it into productivity. So praise productivity and significant accomplishments instead of perceived intelligence.

zCourge_iDX ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:32:17 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

But what if you're not doing great things no matter the effort? Suddenly you feel like you've wasted your talent and that you're useless...

Icemasta ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 00:54:06 on August 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

the more you tell kids how smart they are the less effort they put into doing things.

It's not really telling, it's just that if a kid isn't challenged, he gets used to it, develops bad habits, and sits on his laurel.

That's a big problem in public schools, they have one size fit all classes, so you got slower kids that slow down the class, and fast kids that are bored out of their minds.

I was one of those fast kids, my last year of high school, I pretty much missed 75% of classes, only showed up to turn in reports and for exams, and I got 95% everywhere.

Then college in Natural Sciences 'cause I had no fucking clue what I was doing and all those bad habits I learned through elementary and high schools? Turns out it's really fucking bad. I was doing fuck all in class, I had learned for 11 fucking years how to lose myself into daydreams. Now I had to actually listen, college is actually really fucking easy ,but the first semester I almost flunked. Had to learn to apply myself.

The biggest problem is that if you've never dealt with failure before, and you fail for the first time at college/Uni, you're in big fucking trouble. It can be a crushing blow to some people, and that's why you end up with smart people that do fuck all once they're adults, because suddenly, they are challenged, and they can't deal with it. They haven't developed the skills of "What to do if I have difficulty with something.".

I've had a few classes in college, especially advanced physics classes, that had people dropping like flies. They couldn't understand it, and because they couldn't understand it on the first try, they did not know what to do. They thought "if I can't understand it, that means I am dumb, it's impossible". Some kids think the same thing about fucking multiplication in elementary school but they slug through it and that's a very valuable skill to learn at a young age.

So yeah, it's not really the "tell kids", if the public schools actually challenged the smart kids to keep their intelligence sharp, I am pretty sure we'd have a lot more people in high end research.

Just kidding it's just teenage artsy bullshit.

LordofNarwhals ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 21:52:35 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The way they made the comic is one of them provided photos and the other added text. Sometimes the text has some connection to the photo, but a lot of the time it doesn't.

dekrant ยท -3 points ยท Posted at 18:27:25 on August 3, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

antsugi ยท 21 points ยท Posted at 01:39:29 on August 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

That's the problem. Children who are raised constantly being told how amazing they are internalize that and stop trying as hard as others.

The compliments go away, but the person has their exceptionality ingrained into their mind still, even though they don't get complimented any more. They then begin to warp ideas and start believing the average person isn't actively thinking most of the time - that their wandering mind is one in a million.

This leads to them isolating themselves, and posting ironic memes online to other self-aware strangers that probably live right near each other. But in public, they're all disgusted by all the normies. They wish that they didn't have this "gift" of exceptionalism, that they could be "stupid" like the others. They view their gradual slacking as an ironic curse of being intelligent.

I- I mean, me t-too, th-thanks

I watch children a lot, yes

Mostly it's been a unanimous sentiment between me and other friends I've made through the years. Large enough diversity to assume it's not abnormal

wolfgame ยท 44 points ยท Posted at 00:21:32 on August 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

My IQ was tested as part of a mental health screen at 143 when I was 12. I skipped prerequisites for classes because I screwed around with computers. Never studied. Never received any encouragement or assistance because "wolfgame's a genius, he doesn't need any help. He should should know this already."

Grades were shit. Dropped out of high school in 1996.

I was scouted by a major online service to join their web services team the same year.

Went in to IT consulting. Didn't know about the stigma surrounding consultants.

Worked at a couple of firms. Skills developed, got pretty good at a few things. Eventually found a job as an infrastructure manager.

Had a breakdown after my CFO refused to work with me and the CEO blamed me for a project stalling. Quit my job. Went back to consulting.

Friend went in to the business. Offered to pay him 10% of my billables to handle my collections, contracts, etc...

Friend stole $27,000 from me.

Tried to kill myself. Failed. Taken to the hospital for observation for two weeks. Diagnosed Bipolar I.

I'm now 38. Unemployed. Living in mom's attic.

She's had enough. Wants me out by 8/15. I can't find a job. Don't have a home.

There's no joke here.

CuteDreamsOfYou ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 01:49:41 on August 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I'm sorry.

FluffyPigeon ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 03:51:01 on August 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

How did your friend steal 27k? Fraud?

wolfgame ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 03:57:59 on August 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Loophole in the contract. He did it legally, but by distorting our agreement.

Our agreement was that he was to take 10% of my billables. He took over a year to get an attorney to write up the contract. I asked my attorney to take on the job. She advised me against it, because she would be working for him and not me.

I should've listened.

He had her write the contract that I would be paid 90% of my billable time, which is vastly different from 10% of revenue generated by me.

I landed a contract for a large A/V supply company to build out their new office space. Spent about 6 months on the project and kept asking for access to the location to get everything done. And then was given something like three days in the middle of a blizzard to get the job done.

I had a panic attack and couldn't get any motivation going.

Friend hired contractors, took all of the profit. Sent me a check for $1000. It was a $45,000 contract. Once the contractors had been paid and he took his $4500, there was roughly $27,000 left.

Since the contract was based on billable hours and our agreement was based on gross billables, he was legally in the right, but it completely violated what we had agreed upon in the beginning.

These are my decisions and my consequences.

Blaming everyone else? Nothing could be farther from the truth.

As for kicking a man when he's down? How's that working out for you?

This is completely subjective, but a lot of people who seem very smart as children tend to be lacking in other areas of intelligence like ability to understand social cues. TLDR: It's because redditors are fucking autistic

seal_eggs ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:39:52 on August 4, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

That was me until I started smoking weed. As my grades got worse, my social skills got better. I'm off it for the time being, but I think I'm better for it. Never would have met a lot of people and learned to socialize with different kinds of people than the little "gifted" circle. Even then it sucked. Anyway, I don't know why I'm writing this. I guess I thought it would be relevant, but I just started rambling. Bye.

...way too real (except for the crying part). I was in the gifted programs, didn't study more than 1-2 days for any exam and graduated high school with marks in mid-high 90s. Been in uni for 3 years now and I'm still struggling to pass, barely passing my courses and actually failed a few. I even had to repeat a term in my first year because my average was too low. I really don't know how to study. I wish I had failed and learned when the consequences weren't as high (I'm actually glad I hit this block now rather than even later in life). Can somebody who successfully learned how to study give me any tips or resources?

Can I just say that I relate to a lot of the things written in the comment section. High school was easy, I didn't put much effort into it and got by okay, graduated with above average grades.

Uni started and in my first year I passed all my classes, one of which I did by scoring the bare minimum score to pass. Second year comes along and I fail two classes. It fucking broke me, wrecked me. I couldn't cope with the workload, I withdrew myself. Stopped studying or looking at the material because why bother when you're so far behind. Just stayed in my room all the time, masturbating the entire day and crying myself to sleep. If not that, then I'd either be watching youtube videos or browse reddit. I hated myself so much that I had to constantly distract. I couldn't bear "existing" so I tried to numb my brain using all these distractions. Even the thought of getting better seemed impossible during this time.

Pls help
