My mom used to tell me I could get electric allergy if I played the gameboy too much, and said kids who get electric allergy have to live out the rest of their lives in the woods where there's no electricity. Scared the shit out of me.
My parents used to tell me if I ate too much chocolate I would turn into chocolate and the chocolate monsters would eat me. It worked for a little until I realized it wasn't true like a year later. Pretty funny when I think back on it, actually.

I had the sock monster. When I let the socks on the floor or under my bed the socks would become the sock monster (in my imagination in the form of a little man) and would bring me to the moon...
I didn't realy believed it, but was scared at night of the sock monster crawling out under my bed ...

Telling them the truth is about as effective in my experience. Told my kid the tooth fairy is just mom, and he got mad at yelled at me for insulting his mother, because she's nice and there's no way she's sneaking into his room in the middle of the night and jacking his teeth.
If you lie to your children then you don't usually respect them. A white lie is still a lie, your kid will eventually learn that you lied and it will forever stain your relationship. Children don't need to be manipulated, they are much smarter than given credit for. And even if they don't get it, it'll seem like a valid enough reason, and as they get older should hold up to stipulation.
Usually when I see parents either lying or using bad arguments (ie: because I said so, I know better, etc) is because they don't have a reason. They either don't have a valid reason, or don't understand the topic to explain it.
An example would be the too much TV situation. If you understood it you'd be able to explain that not being social is unhealthy. Usually when younger children are unsocialized they keep and/develop the anti-social behaviors usually found durring the terrible two's. These can exasterbate social anxiety, adhd, depression, social awkwardness, emotion unregulation, and future drug abuse (this is why with more absent parents pre-k is recommended). Along with the eye strain, and constant stimulation causing boredom to be worse. A inactive lifestyle brings other issues into light, hormone imbalance (serotonin and dopamine being the biggest), weight gain, depression, anxiety, emotional imbalance, being unable to participate in sports, etc.
A lengthy explanation shows you know what you are talking about and will gain respect from your child as they get older (until they become smarter than you, which will happen). And if you don't know, use Google. Teaching your children proper researching skills, aswell as not knowing is not something to be insecure about, will help them in the long run. Because if you can put your ego aside when you don't know something, they will aswell.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, don't poison the tree.

Watching too much TV isn't bad for your health but it is bad for behavior issues. A little kid won't understand that. You have to scare them like "if you watch more than 1 hour a day of TV you will go blind" so that they don't until they get old enough to tell them the real reason why.

Ngl bro I dont understand why these people think telling a white lie is bad.
That guy is kinda sick in the head if he thinks telling a white lie is like beating children.
(Great now im getting downvoted. Its an alt acc so I dont really care but can you people tell me why a white lie such as telling your children for example: people put poison in candy. Is considered bad parenting?)
not-alex ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 22:33:24 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Scaring and lying to children can cause anxiety and trust issues when they are older. Kids are smarter than you think, if you give them a chance. Explaining why you do something helps them understand more and lays better groundwork further down the road. Kids are still human beings and deserve respect and lying to them to save yourself the time of explaining it in a way theyll understand isn't very respectful.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:37:24 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Kids also don't understand consequences fully until they're 25
Youโre right. Theyโre inexperienced and wont understand why they cant eat a lot of candy or why they have to eat vegetables. If you explain to them why they wont understand.
Explaining things to something is called teaching, itโs how people become experienced in things, so yes, they will understand, and it will make them not inexperienced.
Why does everyone assume that every single child is just as smart? And sometimes explaining things to them will scar them. So instead of saying โsome people are very mean and you shouldnโt trust themโ they should say โthat old guy in the white van that drives by every week will take off your clothes and put his private part inside of youโ. Which one sounds less fucked up, the white lie or the possible truth?
[deleted] ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 22:33:20 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Are you joking me? You are okay with beating children? Your okay with telling kids that poison is in food that they love?
Where do you read me saying โbeating children is okโ I literally said that people that think its okay are sick.
Though it isnt poison necessarily candy contains substances that are not meant to be eaten in vast amounts.

You are terrible at arguing if you think he endorses beating kids, try reading the second paragraph where he literally says it's wrong.
It seems to me like you think telling white lies, and let me give an example, Santa is a white lie, is comparable to beating your kids?
I am completely lost in your argument and you seem hell bent on building a strawman argument and all the other people just see the downvotes and think "beating your kids is bad and that must be what the other person is trying to say"
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:54:23 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

You're missing the point man it's the same concept. It's the "well everyone else is doing it so it's ok" mind set.
[deleted] ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 22:44:40 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)*
yeah but thats not what this is in regard to the OP of the comment thread. This isnt a white lie. Its taking the opportunity of a child's ignorance to use fear to control them. Not fucking cool any way you shake it. The implications of how you're lack of ability to see this for what it is says a lot about how you would view similar parenting situations.
edit: To add, yes your parents and everyone you mentioned is wrong. This please don't have children if you haven't. If you're going to, get fucking educated you fucking dumbwit
100 years ago kids over the age of 1 worked in factories, went to school, and worked on their parents farms. Teachers were allowed to beat children for misbehaving in class. Parent would beat them harder. Until 1980, kids were barely considered people. My point is times change, and so do parental standards. Just because your parents did lied to you doesnโt make it okay, and multiple studies have shown that lying to kids to scare them into submission has bad side effects, like future anxiety or trust issues.
How the fuck is telling your kid Santa won't come if they don't eat their veggies or telling them they could go blind if they watch too much TV scarring? These were all things my parents told me and I'm fine.
When your kid gets older is the time to be honest with them, honesty isn't the best policy for a 2 year old.
Or be a decent parent and just limit how long they watch tv, yea theyโll probably get mad at you for limiting something they enjoy but youโre their parent, you canโt always be the good guy in their eyes.
Triton_64 ยท -16 points ยท Posted at 22:11:47 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
This isn't shitty parenting. Being honest with your children is the best thing you can do, once they get older. Telling them lies that aren't harmful isn't a bad thing as long as you tell them what the lies were and why you lied to them when they get older. For example, my parents lied to me about video games and TV to get me not to do too much of it. Once I got older, they told me those things don't actually happen and we only told them to you because you wouldn't understand the real reason why they are bad for you in large amounts.
This is literally my sister and it is so fucked up and depressing to me. She's forgotten about actual abuse. Some people just need to live in the world they've made for themselves, I suppose.
"Being honest with your children is the best thing you can do".
Proceeds to defend being dishonest and gaslighting your children.

It has been written to the books that if you have any type of problem, it's because of the TV. Or if you haven't watched TV it's because of your phone. Mom's knows the best..
When I was a kid, I could always hear a high pitched noise emitted from tvs when they were left on without anything playing. It was from the boxy tvs of the late 90s/early 2000s.
I remember being in 1st grade and one of my classmates asked the teacher to turn off the tv because it was making an annoying sound. The teacher was baffled. "No, there's no noise. Don't tell lies." At that point, all of us chimed in to say that there was a noise and a few said it was hurting their ears. She believed it when she saw everybody relax after she turned it off. She looked like she had just discovered a secret of the universe. This was in like 2001.
I learned something about this in high school, the older you get the harder it is for you to hear certain sound frequencies. I donโt remember the why behind it, but you should look it up! Itโs interesting.
Took me til 9th grade to speak up about this when I was right next to the tv in home room. It was like a fucking airhorn
Edit: alright not an airhorn but it pissed me off to no end

I was born with tinnitus, my parents always wondered why I slept so bad as a toddler and young kid untill I was like: "Hey mom, you know when you try to sleep but you just can't because of the ringing?" And when my mom went "uhhh... no...?" I was shocked and then I realised that it isn't normal. Anyway, to everyone with beginning tinnitus, keep the volume down and that's about it. If you have it, there's no way to get rid of it so get used to having it.
My NAS is quite close to me when I sleep and while I first thought that spinning Hard drives 24/7 were really annoying, I got used to it pretty quickly and itโs less annoying than my tinnitus.
I can definitely hear when someone starts streaming from plex or when sonarr decides to start downloading something. My drives rarely stop, but Iโm pretty sure that I could. At the moment theyโre are pretty quite cause nothing is happening and theyโre just spinning, not reading any data. Actually, Iโm not sure if those drives even shut down. I donโt think they can because Iโve got some docker containers that are running 24/7 and I didnโt put in a ssd yet to put their data on there.
Edit: One of the two drives just turned off. Itโs a lot quieter. Never really noticed it before.
Tbh I always just thought of my tinnitus as a personal white noise machine. Being mostly deaf one ear is great because I can lay on my good ear and everything is instantly dulled and I just hear the white noise.
When I was a kid, I asked my parents about that sound when things are quiet. They immediately thought it was tinnitus too. Turned out it was actually just those fresh child ears hearing the hum of electricity
Yes same! I've had tinnitus for as long as I can remember and I remember asking my friends if they ever got annoyed by it. They said they had no idea what I was talking about and I realized that isn't something everyone has.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:35:18 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Same with me when I realized I had synesthesia (I can see music). I was surprised to learn other people see nothing
I've had the seem realization, but only like 3 or 4 years ago with my girlfriend (now wife). I just asked her about how loud the tone in her head was when there aren't any other noticeable noices, and she was like "what tone?"
Went into an MRI that year to get it checked out, but they couldn't see anything, everything looked fine. He was like it could potentially go away in a week, year or maybe never. Wasn't to hopeful for the "in a week" response, since I've had it as long as I can remember.
Aah well, luckily my wife doesn't mind that we have the tv on every night when we go to bed (on a sleep timer) so I can fall asleep with background noises to try to drown out the ringing and that works most of the time.
You may find this interesting, not sure how accessible it is to the general public or over countries, but it's something to keep your eye on at the very least.
I used to sleep with my Gameboy next to me with the Pokemon title song playing, my parents thought it was weird and when I said it was because of the ringing they were super confused.
Turns out multiple perforated eardrums and a couple of surgeries can really mess up your ear drums
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:43:22 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
I remember thinking as a child that Iโd never know what silent sounds like.
You can temporarily stop the effects by taking your hands and putting your palms over your ears and putting your fingers on the back of your head where your neck meets your skull and lightly tap it for 30 seconds. It doesnt last long but got is it a nice reprieve from the endless sound
Ive had tinnitus since i was 4 and used to break down crying sometimes because of it. I didnt know about this trick until a couple years ago and damn near cried when i had a literal minute of silence in decades
Since you were born with it I have a question, yesterday at night I heard a high pitched noise for 5-6 seconds after using headphones for 5 hours. Is this like an early sign of tinnitus ?
rxTIMOxr ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:57:40 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Well it depends, the longer you wear your headphones the lower your sound should be. You can listen to 90dB (decibels) for half an hour without any consequences but if you listen to it for 4 hours there could be damage.
I'd advise to not listen past 60 of the max volume if you put your headphones on for a while. And if the ringing only lasts for 5-6 seconds at a time I wouldn't worry too much just keep the sound at a reasonable level.
And if you're wearing it for a long time like 5 hours just remember to take them off every once in a while and let your ears rest, constant sound doesn't seem annoying until it's not there.
If you hear ringing everytime you wear headphones lower the sound, if there's a bit of damage the ear can kind of heal itself but when the damage gets permanent there's not really any way to get it back to normal.
Just remember to not go past 60% of the volume if you're listening for a long time.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:08:51 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
When I first had it, i was going insane. I'm just use to it now. Ofcourse other sounds do block it out
im pretty sure i have it because the ringing gets more consistent over time and some times it gets to a point where i dont hear any ringing i just go partially deaf for a couple minutes
He got some kind of treatment, I don't know the details, I'm so sorry. Appearantly the earlier ypu seek help the more likely it is to be curable.
[deleted] ยท 35 points ยท Posted at 22:28:20 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Really? As far as Iโve heard, itโs permanent. Iโve been to the ENT a few times, he knows I have tinnitus, but hasnโt said anything about any treatment. Canโt find anything on Google either. Itโs possible that it just goes away for some people and there may be ways to try and help it but Iโm 99% sure thereโs no โcure.โ
It depends on how you got it from what I've experienced.
If you got it from listening to too much loud music, it's likely permanent afaik.
If you got it by damaging your eardrum with a physical object, it's likely permanent afaik.
If it's caused by fluids inside your ear, it may be fixed by draining the fluid
If it's caused by earwax blockage, it may be fixed by removing the earwax
If it's caused by an ear infection, it may just randomly disappear if you're lucky
Not every Tinnitus is the same so some may be cured or go away over time while others don't go away or require expensive treatment
I'm no doctor or knowledgeable about healthcare so take this with a grain of salt and correct me if I'm wrong
a_hirst ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 23:13:50 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
I gave myself tinnitus recently by shoving a cotton ear bud too far into my ear and causing a small perforation of the drum (eurgh). I just saw the doctor today and she said it should heal itself in 6-8 weeks... thank fuck. It's actually been getting progressively better over the past week to be honest.
So yeah, damaging your ear drum with a physical object doesn't necessarily cause permanent damage.
Gonna need to do the same prob. Had an ear infection and lots of pressure started building up behind my eardrum until it started hurting quite bad, have tinnutus since. It's been like, 6 weeks now? Maybe 7.
DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN YOUR EAR, ESPECIALLY NOT COTTON SWABS. If you really can't resist though and only need to remove an ear wax blockage at surface level, get something super thin but sturdy that doesn't push things down. But only go like less than 2cm deep AND only if it's an emergency AND there's no doctors available because of covid. BUT AGAIN DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN YOUR EAR ANS GET IT CLEANED BY A PROFESSIONAL IF POSSIBLE.
(I've had to resort to putting things down my ear because it got blocked by wax about every other week and I'm not going to the doctor's every 2 weeks)
Had a similar thing happen a year ago. Since then, I sometimes get a tinnitus. But it's mostly when the temperature in my apartment drops. So I keep my ears warm when I go to sleep.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:29:11 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Thatโs true. I have no idea how or why I got mine, I donโt remember exactly when it started or when I first noticed it, and I have zero problems with my actual hearing so I have no fucking clue in my case.
If you get it in response to a loud noise exposure, you can get steroids (usually a short course of prednisone) to help heal your ears. If its not from damaged ears or its longer than a few days afterwards, you're SOL
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:46:40 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Itโs neither of those for me, my hearing is great and I have no clue what caused it. What does SOL mean?
It depends there are plenty of short term things that can cause tinnitus. I used to get it after shift work wearing earplugs for 12 hours a day but it went away as soon as I left that job.
You are extremely lucky that it went away on its own.

I honestly don't think about my tinnitus at all. It would be like if the sky turned green one day and every day after that everything would have a light green tint to it when you went outside. What would be the point in getting upset over it. You just have to accept it, and move on.
Surely you've done that with other things in life, such as your own mortality, the death of your loved ones, all the opportunities you've missed on life.. if you haven't and are now thinking about those, well at least tinnitus isn't what you're worried about now is it.
Thinking about tinnitus to me is similar to someone saying 'you're now breathing manually'. Unless it's specifically brought up I don't really consciously think about it.
Which is why i hate it when someone brings it up, because now i am noticing it again. I usually can ignore it just by having residual noise from a fan on at night or background noise from videos or people.
It is very depressing though to realize i will probably never hear true silence ever again though.
I'm usually this way, but the tone in my left ear is very wavery and unsteady, literally sounds like someone ringing a handbell, and it's really hard to get that one to fade into the background

Whether you go to the doctor or not the prognosis is still the same, but if there's something you can change wouldn't it be better to know that sooner than later?
Iโve heard good things about cognitive behavioral therapy. It doesnโt cut it, it just helps your brain kinda forget about it in a sense. Worked really well for me for a different issue but YMMV.
Sorry to say but there is no known cure. So there is definitely a misunderstanding going on of what actually happened.

It's more than likely he had something causing it and they were able to fix that thing. Apart from that it's generally permanent. Still worth getting seen for to know the difference. You'll get used to it. It sucks for awhile but it is what it is. White noise is your best friend. Music, a tv, a fan, anything. The solution is to get you to a place where it's just normal.
It's definitely not curable, have gone to many ear specialists. Only trick is to mentally ignore it or use background music/sounds

Hang in there. It can be maddening at times but focusing on it definitely makes it worse.
I donโt know how bad or how frequent it is for you, but I found that I can hardly notice mine even if I try when in the shower.
Mine came in during the middle of a workday. One second silence, the next it popped in and never went away. I sleep with a fan to try and help, and it does get worse if Iโm stressed but Iโm slowly making my peace with it. Stay strong.
Thank you. My mother and my aunt both have this two so I suppose I'm equally cursed now. It's a relatively quiet one but it just keeps going. It is hard to sleep. I will try to put music on.

Yeah... I had it for a week, but the week lasted 20 years
you get used to it, half the time I don't even notice when it happens.
also, I've gotten a tip that can temporarily get rid of the sound tinnitus makes. Cover your ears with both hands, and with 1 finger from each hand tap the back of your skull. Do this for 15-30 seconds and the tinnitus sound will be gone when you uncover your ears. Really helpful for when I notice it and it doesn't go away.

Donโt worry, eventually youโll get used to it. Iโve had it for a couple years now and it hardly ever bothers me.

Iโve had tinnitus for years now. There is medicine that can help, but Iโve heard many people say it just makes it worse permanently. Iโve had nights where I can sleep because of it, but overtime Iโve gotten used to the fact this wonโt go away. Iโve been to the doctors and they just tell me itโs uncurable.
giilgaa ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:04:23 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
I've had it for a year now: believe me, your first 2 months are gonna be hell. But the longer you go, the easier it gets. At this point i only notice it on two occasions: when i haven't slept for more than 24 hours or when i focus on it really hard. Get rid of stress sources, sleep a lot, and it will be unnoticeable after a few weeks. Now ilegit have to force myself to listen to it to notice it in a quiet room.
It's kind of astonishing how your brain is both stupid because it's doing this to itself and smart because it gets used to it quickly.
Had mine about a month now. Doctor thinks itโs a sinus infection that is causing fluid buildup. Trying antibiotics. Itโs been only 3 days since I started them. No change yet. Still holding out hope.
Rinzack ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:08:45 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
I've had it for as long as I can remember. What I've noticed is that people either filter it out for the most part or it becomes a constant that tortures them.
The first 6 months are hell and then you'll get used to it. It just becomes the norm and it's just w/e. Still enjoy music as much as I did before tinnitus so really hasn't impacted much.

โIโve had oneโ
Youโve had... one tinnitus?
Iโm sorry but thatโs not how it works. Tinnitus is a permanent irreversible thing. If youโrs goes away at some point, it was never tinnitus. Your hearing threshold just went up because of being exposed to loud sounds.
more like eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...
I've had tinnitus for as long as I remember. When I was a kid I remember watching an episode of the Big Bang Theory where sheldon was being a hypochondriac and one of the things he said was that he hears a constant high pitch ringing in his ears and the laugh track sounded. I thought the joke was that everyone heard the high pitch ringing and the joke was that he was making a big deal out of there being nothing wrong.

Classic unfunny Big Bang Theory moment. One of very many.
Edit: I have tinnitus and I'm just grumpy about it. Doing fine though.

Iโve had what seems like tinnitus symptoms but they arenโt constant it happens for like 10 seconds every few days or so and goes away but itโs a sharp high pitched ring in my right ear
rxTIMOxr ยท 22 points ยท Posted at 21:37:50 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Well that's something a little more common, most people have that.
jasenkov ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 21:41:05 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Not the same guy but yes. It's constant and it never stops.
For me it sounds like Number 5 in this video at a low volume, mostly in my left ear. If I play that sound next to my left ear I genuinely don't hear anything because that's what silence sounds like for me. The only way I even know the video is playing is to put it to my other ear.
It's quiet enough that you can hear other things over it fine, but it's always there. Take care of your ears.
Yep. I've had it since I was a baby. It comes from a jaw problem but fixing the jaw problem didn't make it stop. So now I just love with it. It sounds like if you were to play 2 mosquito tones over each other.
ddtm132 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:00:18 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
So that's what it was called, I remember I used to just hear EEEEEEE one time in like 2nd or 3rd grade and that's when I actually acknowledged the sound and just whenever the area around me was quiet and I'm not thinking of anything, it's just EEEEE. It never really annoyed me at all and it stayed with me for I think a couple years, I dont actually know when it went away because again it didnt annoy me so I didnt think about it, and when I first saw a meme relating to that sound I remembered this happened to me before and had a good laugh, anyway I never really knew what it was called. Have a good day!
Okay, so, I'm just laying in bed and reading this I did notice a sound in my ear. Not exactly a high pitch ringing or something, but somewhat close. It's very quiet and with even a slight bit of noise it disappears. Could that be tinnitus or just something else? Because I literally don't notice it 99.9% of the time and I'd figure even a light tinnitus would be more noticable than that.
Iโve had it for a few years, and when I first noticed it I thought it was the end of the world. Itโs really not that bad after a while. Ironically, I listen to more music than ever (at a low volume) and sleeping with a fan on has eliminated a bunch of weird background noises that would have kept me up normally. I carry a set of earplugs with me at all times. It was a good wake up call to take better care of my hearing

I was in my 20s before I realized not everyone heard it. I think part of it was that media usually uses a ringing sound to indicate someone can't hear, so it made sense that everyone heard it when it was completely silent.
In the summer of 2018 I went to put my headphones on. Just as my hand reached my ear a wasp flew in-between my arm, and was trapped in my "elbow pit." It bit me, and then dropped to the ground.
15 minutes later I started hearing a ringing in my ears. It hasn't gone away. Every second, of every minute, of every day since that day it's been there. They are ringing right now.
Yep. 3 years in the army has left me with constant EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:19:02 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
I work in a machine shop. For the first 2-3 years I didn't wear any hearing protection. We are below the OSHA requirement to mandate it but high enough the company has to offer ear plugs.
I started hearing ringing occasionally and it scared me into wearing earplugs every day.
Lucky it hasn't gotten any worse and is still only occasionally.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:39:48 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Put your palms over your ears, sealing your ear canal, then drum on the back of your head at the base of where your neck meets your skull. Just lightly tapping your fingers.
It should go away for a few hours to days.

Sadly, this doesn't work (well) for everyone. It works only a few minutes for my right ear, but hours for my left ear. For my dad it only makes it worse (temporarily). A friend of mine had it lessen (but not completely remove) the noise for over a week though.

Mine is at about 14700 hertz. Iโm constantly listening to something to distract myself from it, but when Iโm trying to go to sleep it gets unbearable.
I was at work an alarm went off thought it was my tinnitus fucking with me, then my coworkers started complaining about the noise then it started annoying me cause of it turned out to be a real world sound.
Apparently 1 in 4 people have it??? But just donโt realize

Yup. Just got handed garbage ears from the start. A lifetime of bad ear infections and tubes and tympanoplasties will give it. I told my wife that I never feel alone because of the constant ringing and it made her feel sad. But I really canโt remember not having it, so itโs just normal for me
Being in an anechoic chamber is nuts for sure. We have a couple at my work and it always weirds me out stepping in one and noticing the stark contrast between the two spaces even with the door still open. It isn't silent enough to hear your own blood running, but it does get eerily silent all the same.

I'm not OP, but I went on a tour of a Digital Testing lab (where they certify all sorts of electronics for sale in Europe), and they had an Anechoic chamber to test smart speakers (like echo dots). We weren't allowed inside, sadly.

There is definitely a connection between jaw/neck physiology and tinnitus, but what I was saying was that I dont think the head thump trick works because of muscle relaxing, I think it's because of a muffling effect.
Omfg Iโm gonna cry. The ringing stopped for like 15 seconds. As short as it was, thatโs the quietest Iโve ever heard anything in my nearly 40 years of being alive.
Not sure if you've tried this before but it helps me. I'm serious. Listen at a volume just below how loud your tinnitus is for about 15 minutes. There are some other therapies for different pitches (this one is high pitch). It's weird but it works for me whenever it my tinnitus gets really loud.

Listened to this for 15 minutes and took my headphones off to test and it actually worked. Had Tinnitus since I can remember. This is the first time in a long time I've heard silence. Hopefully this continues to work in the future. Thank you so much.
Hey there, been a couple days now and Iโve used this a few times now. It works really well, and has even changed the intensity of my tinnitus even when Iโm not listening to it. The ringing is a bit โdullerโ and less of a sharp piercing ring.
Thank you for this. Itโs been great.

Someone needs to invent a headbanger device that automatically does this. It works but only temporarily, and it's not worth it since I've gotta do it so often. But if it was automatic...
I can't believe this works... I've had tinnitus for almost ten years and while it didn't go away fully it greatly reduced the sound of ringing for a while. Thank you
Man super late to the comment chain but you're a champ; it totally is working. Don't know if I'll even get the ten minutes of relief you mentioned but even a brief interlude is welcome. Thank you, sincerely.

monocasa ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 22:47:25 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
So do most electrical circuits. It's about electrical pressure, not the actual electrons in most cases (flash memory and CRTs being a couple of exceptions).
I mean, that is correct, but rather dissimilar in mechanism to how the brain does it. Electrons move through the circuits carried by the electron holes (sucking the electrons forward, essentially, like water rushing to fill in the space created by water being removed) traveling through a medium whereas the brain moves the medium itself to carry the charges.
monocasa ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:02:25 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
The medium itself doesn't move to carry the charges in the brain. It sort of does to create the charges in the first place, but so do batteries internally.
Well, no and yes. While the current is induced from the different concentration of ions being released/pumped (as you say), there is a posited accompanying mechanical wave that travels along the neuronal fiber, with an increased volume of water and sodium ions traveling along it. See this for more details. It's somewhat well-supported even if it's still in the early stages for having substantial-enough evidence to be accepted as fact, and it also explains some anomalies that arise from an electric-only model (the HH model).
I'd like to add for anyone in need that tinnitus may also be caused by bruxism (jaw clenching).
If you suffer from it, especially unvoluntarily during sleep, it is incredibly hard to get used to relax your jaw muscles.
There is a special way to pull on your ears that reliefs tinnitus. It is rather silly and hard to describe but maybe your physiotherapist knows about it.
You grab the inner side of the ear at the height of the earlobe with your thumb and the outer side with your fingers and then gently pull slightly to the back of your head and also away. If done correctly you feel a strange but relaxing stretch inside your ear canal. Do that for 10 seconds, release and repeat for a couple of minutes.
Stress, improper posture and lack of physical activity are some of the causes of bruxism. Some esoteric explanations for jaw clenching are restrained anger, regret and that a person slugs down their emotions thus the bodily reaction to this is to literally "bite through".
Khearnei ยท 28 points ยท Posted at 21:55:37 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
I often wonder if there is any research being done in ways to repair eardrums and cure tinnitus. Feels like with the rise of always-in ear buds and the proliferation of loud music generally, there would be a serious rise in people with tinnitus and thus a serious market for a cure. I know a few people who would kill for that. But I have never heard anything about it.
Yes there is ongoing research. I recently read an article about a new type of therapy where they shock your tongue while playing different frequencies. A lot of people said it worked, but others not so much... it's very expensive too. It was posted on Reddit, and engineers in the comments said they were going to try and replicate it, but I never followed up on it.
One of the challenges with treating or curing tinnitus is that it is slightly different for everyone. For example, someone might have damaged cilia, or a damaged cochlea, or a damaged vestibular nerve, all of which need to be studied and treated individually.
Why you guys downvoting? Seriously, turn down your headphones/earphones as low as possible while still hearing everything. I started doing this a few months ago and the ringing is getting quieter.
[deleted] ยท 31 points ยท Posted at 21:46:16 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Someone once told me the "eeeeeeeee" was the sound of cilia dying.
You're making me doubt myself now. I thought cilia was the little wavy hair things that move mucus in your sinuses and lungs, or help move food in your intestines etc. The crowd wave dudes.
I thought that too but went to a specialist recently and nope, that's not it. The sudden, acute, temporary ringing might be due an imbalance of sodium and magnesium electrolytes. Try reducing your sodium intake and get magnesium supplements.
And if you play in any band louder than...idk a string quartet...please wear hearing protection. I didn't do this for years and now my hearing is all kinds of fucked up. Thankfully my body decided to start telling me when to put hearing protection on because of actual pain from loud sounds. Don't be like me, folks.
It's cos the hair cells that detect sound need blood so the high pitched ringing is the blood passing through the blood vessels.
Also ears can adapt to different volumes quite effectively. If you went into a room that was as silent as possible then eventually you start hearing your heart beat and your digestive system working as well as the muscles in your lungs moving. This is because the brain can turn up the hairs sensitivity to sound when it gets really quiet, but it rarely does this as it also becomes more sensitive to loud noises.
This may not work for everyone, but it helps my SO a little:
White noise.
We starting using an app called "Relaxio" (Android, not sure about others) to play white noise to help our children sleep and realized it also works for some tinnitus. Also great if you like nature sounds to sleep/relax to such as rain, a river, fire, etc.
Im sorry about That! Mines only on the right side. Sometimes the intensity changes but for the most part it stays the same. Iโm having enough troubles with mine so I raise my hat for you! Stay strong!

Tinnitus? You mean my own personal white noise maker.
Same. It's like all at once. I don't know if I actually have tinnitus, though. When I went to the doctor about it she said there was blockage behind the ear. Snot and stuff. She said it would clear up and go away. That was in Juneโฆ

This is an interesting fact I found of from one of my teachers. Even deaf people can hear things. There isnโt a thing called complete silence. Like when youโre in water and itโs quiet, but you can hear something in the water, deaf people go through almost the same thing. Itโs an interesting thing I found out. Being in complete silence however can actually make you go insane. There is this tank I think thatโs literally salt water, but itโs like completely silent and not many people can survive that long in there cause it can screw you up mentally.
Ok so I doubt anyone is going to see this because it's already so upvoted.
I studied the neuroscience of sensory systems during my undergrad. The way the ear works is by constantly producing signal to the brain during silence. Then when a sound is produced it reduces or stops the signal. This is done for different pitches individually. In the brain this signal is processed to make sense of speech and other sounds. When a hair cell gets damaged or killed it stops producing signal. This is interpreted as sound in the brain. This is why when you have hearing damage you hear high pitched constant sound in silent environments.

h34rtz ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 22:00:13 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
no when the cilia are bent or changed in some way it tricks the brain into thinking theres a sound because the cilia are what pick up sound and that gets sent to your brain

Being a guitarist and live my life around music and sounds, i regret not taking better care of my hearing. Many sessions with my amp way to loud because more loud is more fun and listening to music way too loud has started taking it's toll on my ears and the thought of someday never being able to hear again really saddens me. It's hard to hold back tears when i think about the songs I'll never hear again and the chords I'll never be able to enjoy again.
Take care of your hearing and even though Lemmy said the only way to feel the noise is when it's getting loud, mayve that's not for all of us to live by.
A horrible thing about depression is that the more depressed you are, the more you notice the constant โear noise.โ My meds arenโt due for a refill for some bizarre reason(itโs been six days), so it just keeps getting worse and worse and now I have to constantly listen to music

In a theoretical perfectly silent room, you'd start hearing two frequencies - one produced by your blood flow, and the other, much higher, produced by your nervous system.
Or so I heard in a podcast so it might be total bs, I dunno lol
What's causing the noise is mostly in your brain, it can be a mix of ear damage and the neuron network that deals with sound, but part of it is just the network interpreting random signals, kind of like when you have a bad audio jack connection, all the bad grounding allows for random electrical signals, which come out as noise.

I remember doing a hearing test in a totally isolated room at the hospital and when the instructor played a sound I was supposed to press a button. Since it was so silent there I heard this fake sound in my head and I had no idea if it was real or just in my head. Made the test real difficult.

the saying is actually the blood rushing by your ears at high speeds. itโs over powered by most noises but sometimes your brain gives up on the noise cancellation for a few seconds.
Sometimes I'll get ringing in one of my ears for about a minute before it goes away. I've read that it can actually be muscle spasms in certain parts of your ear (don't remember exactly which, so please forgive me).
For those suffering, some things that really helped me was reducing my caffeine intake, and getting a fan with a sleep timer so I could use the white noise to fall asleep, but actually sleep in silence to give my ears plenty of actual silence.

I spent the longest time trying to figure out how Patrick's ID makes him an ear. Only after I read the whole thing did I realize this meme had nothing to do with what was written on Patrick's ID.
I (believe I) don't have tinnitus, when I'm distracted I di t hear anything, but when I pay attention to the silence I begin to hear a really faint ringing, anyone could explain that?
Well without a tinnitus your ear would eventually pick up the blood getting pumped through your veins and arteries. So even in a completely silent room there is still a source of sound ... you.
It might be obvious but chronic tinnitus isn't an ear problem it's a neural one. You could scoop out your whole ear and you'll still hear the ringing because your brain is confused for whatever reason.
After reading some of the comments, I gotta say when I asked when I was little about that my parents just said that the noise was my brain making sure I hadnโt gone deaf by stimulating the nerve.
You canโt ever have true silence because your body makes noise just by being alive. Stuff like your nervous system makes noise

Lmao beating a child is different than telling them a white lie that you be honest about with them once they get older.
As long as once they get older you tell them the truth and explain why they lied, to keep you safe and healthy, I believe it is fine.
If you keep the lie and never admit to them that not eating veggies won't make Santa come than there is a problem

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:37:24 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

blue_jay3736 ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 23:42:50 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Youโre right. Theyโre inexperienced and wont understand why they cant eat a lot of candy or why they have to eat vegetables. If you explain to them why they wont understand.
SushiKat2 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:58:02 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Explaining things to something is called teaching, itโs how people become experienced in things, so yes, they will understand, and it will make them not inexperienced.
blue_jay3736 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:31:56 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:36:11 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
You are terrible at arguing if you think he endorses beating kids, try reading the second paragraph where he literally says it's wrong.
It seems to me like you think telling white lies, and let me give an example, Santa is a white lie, is comparable to beating your kids?
I am completely lost in your argument and you seem hell bent on building a strawman argument and all the other people just see the downvotes and think "beating your kids is bad and that must be what the other person is trying to say"
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:54:23 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Unlimited_Cha0s ยท 25 points ยท Posted at 22:18:08 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Blue_Moon_Lake ยท 36 points ยท Posted at 23:59:38 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

We had a science professor who was all about peer reviewed shit.
So he told his kids if they sat too close too tv their eyes would explode. They called bs. And went looking for peer reviewed papers to disprove his theory.
Turns out they were right and kids were allowed to sit wherever they felt like to watch TV distance wise

Tinnitus anyone?
rxTIMOxr ยท 698 points ยท Posted at 21:00:09 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
I was born with tinnitus, my parents always wondered why I slept so bad as a toddler and young kid untill I was like: "Hey mom, you know when you try to sleep but you just can't because of the ringing?" And when my mom went "uhhh... no...?" I was shocked and then I realised that it isn't normal. Anyway, to everyone with beginning tinnitus, keep the volume down and that's about it. If you have it, there's no way to get rid of it so get used to having it.
sergeant_cabbage ยท 314 points ยท Posted at 21:02:00 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Good technique for any parent who is reading your comment is a white noise machine, on low volume. So the mind focuses on that instead.

My NAS is quite close to me when I sleep and while I first thought that spinning Hard drives 24/7 were really annoying, I got used to it pretty quickly and itโs less annoying than my tinnitus.
sandcloak ยท 22 points ยท Posted at 22:40:35 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
I wonder if you would hear the difference if a drive would decide to shut down
Vinnipinni ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 22:58:40 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)*

Trythenewpage ยท 48 points ยท Posted at 21:36:28 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
When I was a kid, I asked my parents about that sound when things are quiet. They immediately thought it was tinnitus too. Turned out it was actually just those fresh child ears hearing the hum of electricity

You can temporarily stop the effects by taking your hands and putting your palms over your ears and putting your fingers on the back of your head where your neck meets your skull and lightly tap it for 30 seconds. It doesnt last long but got is it a nice reprieve from the endless sound

BrawlFan_1 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:40:11 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Really? As far as Iโve heard, itโs permanent. Iโve been to the ENT a few times, he knows I have tinnitus, but hasnโt said anything about any treatment. Canโt find anything on Google either. TheGamefreak484 ยท 49 points ยท Posted at 22:42:21 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
It depends on how you got it from what I've experienced.
TheGamefreak484 ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 23:32:43 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Blue_Moon_Lake ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:01:56 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Had a similar thing happen a year ago. Since then, I sometimes get a tinnitus. But it's mostly when the temperature in my apartment drops. So I keep my ears warm when I go to sleep.
Kagewarrior1 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:47:39 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
And that's how you get tinnitus
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:29:11 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Thatโs true. I have no idea how or why I got mine, I donโt remember exactly when it started or when I first noticed it, and I have zero problems with my actual hearing so I have no fucking clue in my case.
TheGamefreak484 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:35:12 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
And your doctor also can't see anything odd? No punctures, no ear wax rubbing against your ear drum? No fluids?
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:04:39 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Nope. Just randomly got it.
BlueLeatherBoots ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:55:14 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Ardorfool ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 23:35:58 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Which is why i hate it when someone brings it up, because now i am noticing it again. I usually can ignore it just by having residual noise from a fan on at night or background noise from videos or people.
It is very depressing though to realize i will probably never hear true silence ever again though.
BlueLeatherBoots ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:57:13 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Massaging the jaw can help. Sometimes Tinnitus is caused by extreme tension of the jaw muscles
[deleted] ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 22:48:30 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
I've had it for like 15 years now. I'm just used to it now. There are times I even forget and don't realize it.
Lavamites ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 22:51:08 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
you get used to it, half the time I don't even notice when it happens.
also, I've gotten a tip that can temporarily get rid of the sound tinnitus makes. Cover your ears with both hands, and with 1 finger from each hand tap the back of your skull. Do this for 15-30 seconds and the tinnitus sound will be gone when you uncover your ears. Really helpful for when I notice it and it doesn't go away.

doesn't seem to work for me, but on the other hand my brain tends to just tune it out and I don't hear it unless I focus on hearing it
there was one time where it was quite loud all night and it just wouldn't go away though... maybe it works better the louder it is

I'll be praying for you too. Honestly, it was one of the biggest challenges of my faith because it's really easy to listen to fear and to listen to what Google searches/WebMD say. I'm healed now though, my faith has grown tremendously, and it is definitely a testimony moment. God is good. I would be glad to talk you through everything that I did and tell my story. Feel free to give me a message. :)
Anyone else interested can also send message me!

The first 6 months are hell and then you'll get used to it. It just becomes the norm and it's just w/e. Still enjoy music as much as I did before tinnitus so really hasn't impacted much.

Youโve had... one tinnitus?
Iโm sorry but thatโs not how it works. Tinnitus is a permanent irreversible thing. If youโrs goes away at some point, it was never tinnitus. Your hearing threshold just went up because of being exposed to loud sounds.

I've had tinnitus for as long as I remember. When I was a kid I remember watching an episode of the Big Bang Theory where sheldon was being a hypochondriac and one of the things he said was that he hears a constant high pitch ringing in his ears and the laugh track sounded. I thought the joke was that everyone heard the high pitch ringing and the joke was that he was making a big deal out of there being nothing wrong.

jasenkov ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:03:24 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Damn, so you really just have a constant ringing? It never goes away?
ibetrollingyou ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:32:34 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)*
Dracekidjr ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:50:24 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Yep. I've had it since I was a baby. It comes from a jaw problem but fixing the jaw problem didn't make it stop. So now I just love with it. It sounds like if you were to play 2 mosquito tones over each other.

Ser_Salty ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:29:44 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Okay, so, I'm just laying in bed and reading this I did notice a sound in my ear. Not exactly a high pitch ringing or something, but somewhat close. It's very quiet and with even a slight bit of noise it disappears. Could that be tinnitus or just something else? Because I literally don't notice it 99.9% of the time and I'd figure even a light tinnitus would be more noticable than that.
2HotTakeJake ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:31:15 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Being in an anechoic chamber is nuts for sure. We have a couple at my work and it always weirds me out stepping in one and noticing the stark contrast between the two spaces even with the door still open. It isn't silent enough to hear your own blood running, but it does get eerily silent all the same.

iirc tinnitus can be caused by tension in your neck muscles, and that drumming forces them to relax
whatwhatdb ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 23:58:13 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
That seems unlikely, IMO. I think it just induces some sort of muffling effect, and I think I once read someone saying that's what is happening.

There is definitely a connection between jaw/neck physiology and tinnitus, but what I was saying was that I dont think the head thump trick works because of muscle relaxing, I think it's because of a muffling effect.

Omfg Iโm gonna cry. The ringing stopped for like 15 seconds. As short as it was, thatโs the quietest Iโve ever heard anything in my nearly 40 years of being alive.
drstrangelov59 ยท 45 points ยท Posted at 23:08:22 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Not sure if you've tried this before but it helps me. I'm serious. Listen at a volume just below how loud your tinnitus is for about 15 minutes. There are some other therapies for different pitches (this one is high pitch). It's weird but it works for me whenever it my tinnitus gets really loud. https://youtu.be/4LZv3ta13Ws
MarksmenNeedBuffs ยท 21 points ยท Posted at 02:19:11 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Someone needs to invent a headbanger device that automatically does this. It works but only temporarily, and it's not worth it since I've gotta do it so often. But if it was automatic...

Thankfully, there's some medical research on this issue, since a lot of soldiers do get tinnitus from gunfire and loud explosions.

People know that their brain runs on electricity right?
magistrate101 ยท 106 points ยท Posted at 22:19:21 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
The brain actually uses charged ions, like sodium, chloride, and calcium, instead of electrons for signaling.

monocasa ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 22:47:25 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
So do most electrical circuits. It's about electrical pressure, not the actual electrons in most cases (flash memory and CRTs being a couple of exceptions).
magistrate101 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:50:13 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
It's the movement of electron holes that produces the work, if I'm remembering a partially read book on circuitry correctly.
monocasa ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:52:15 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah, electron holes in differently charged ions.
magistrate101 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:00:52 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
It sort of does to create the charges in the first place, but so do batteries internally.
gnostiphage ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:21:46 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Well, no and yes. While the current is induced from the different concentration of ions being released/pumped (as you say), there is a posited accompanying mechanical wave that travels along the neuronal fiber, with an increased volume of water and sodium ions traveling along it. See this for more details. It's somewhat well-supported even if it's still in the early stages for having substantial-enough evidence to be accepted as fact, and it also explains some anomalies that arise from an electric-only model (the HH model).
magistrate101 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:56:28 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Wanderers_Schatten ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:10:58 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Those are good advices.
But I have never heard anything about it.
whatwhatdb ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 00:02:05 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Yes there is ongoing research. I recently read an article about a new type of therapy where they shock your tongue while playing different frequencies. A lot of people said it worked, but others not so much... it's very expensive too. It was posted on Reddit, and engineers in the comments said they were going to try and replicate it, but I never followed up on it.
anonymityisweird ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 07:03:57 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
One of the challenges with treating or curing tinnitus is that it is slightly different for everyone. For example, someone might have damaged cilia, or a damaged cochlea, or a damaged vestibular nerve, all of which need to be studied and treated individually.

Tinnitus. You have tinnitus.
Clackers2020 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 21:52:34 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

TheDaveWSC ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:52:17 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Definitely, that's a great tip! When possible I sleep with a standing fan going, which is ideal. Otherwise I have a nature sounds app on my phone.

There is this tank I think thatโs literally salt water, but itโs like completely silent and not many people can survive that long in there cause it can screw you up mentally.
aGradsConfusion ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:20:02 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

FPSHero007 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:57:15 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

In a theoretical perfectly silent room, you'd start hearing two frequencies - one produced by your blood flow, and the other, much higher, produced by your nervous system.
Or so I heard in a podcast so it might be total bs, I dunno lol

CagneytheCarnation ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:49:22 on February 1, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
What's causing the noise is mostly in your brain, it can be a mix of ear damage and the neuron network that deals with sound, but part of it is just the network interpreting random signals, kind of like when you have a bad audio jack connection, all the bad grounding allows for random electrical signals, which come out as noise.

Both ears for me. Right is worse than the left. Normal day is fine. Can tune it out. At night though. O God its miserable. Can only sleep on my left. The right against the pillow makes it SO much worse. Sleep with the radio and it only helps so much. Even bought a sound.. detector. Thingy with a microphone to detect decibal levels. Found out driving my truck sith the windows down on the interstate can achieve easily above 100dbs. Super scared of loud noise above a vacuum now. Im only 26..

I've had it for years. Allergies caused me to have to blow my nose a lot, and I did it a lot harder than I needed to when I was a kid. I can't remember a time in my when I haven't had it. I keep hoping that some day I'll have some silence. I'm the mean time, I sometimes wear ear plugs to bed and it makes it worse, but it's never kept me from sleeping.

Does anyone else have to turn off all the switches when they try to sleep. I feel like sometimes I can hear it on but I've never heard of anyone else personally speak about it. My girlfriend can't hear the noise but I certainly can hear something and it's annoying.

the saying is actually the blood rushing by your ears at high speeds. itโs over powered by most noises but sometimes your brain gives up on the noise cancellation for a few seconds.

That is called tinnitus (not to be confused with tetanus). It is usually caused by loud music and other outer stemuli.

I got tinnitus during my "music" phase. I would go everywhere with a mp3 player and earphones. Playing cs in high volume also contributed slightly.

Sometimes I'll get ringing in one of my ears for about a minute before it goes away. I've read that it can actually be muscle spasms in certain parts of your ear (don't remember exactly which, so please forgive me).
stinky_pinky_brain ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:56:26 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
For those suffering, some things that really helped me was reducing my caffeine intake, and getting a fan with a sleep timer so I could use the white noise to fall asleep, but actually sleep in silence to give my ears plenty of actual silence.

Has anyone gotten tinnitus from any medication? I don't have a specific source since my tinnitus just started one fine day. I just remember that I was getting treated for dry eye syndrome and my doctor was making things worse by misdiagnosing it.

I (believe I) don't have tinnitus, when I'm distracted I di t hear anything, but when I pay attention to the silence I begin to hear a really faint ringing, anyone could explain that?
MandalorianChiss ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:07:14 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Well without a tinnitus your ear would eventually pick up the blood getting pumped through your veins and arteries. So even in a completely silent room there is still a source of sound ... you.
bo0oberry ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:26:25 on February 2, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
It might be obvious but chronic tinnitus isn't an ear problem it's a neural one. You could scoop out your whole ear and you'll still hear the ringing because your brain is confused for whatever reason.

After reading some of the comments, I gotta say when I asked when I was little about that my parents just said that the noise was my brain making sure I hadnโt gone deaf by stimulating the nerve.

You canโt ever have true silence because your body makes noise just by being alive. Stuff like your nervous system makes noise
jayyy2 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:48:02 on February 4, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
I have Tinnitus from no ear protection near gunfire, loud engines and loud music in my 20s so now the room doesn't even need to be quiet anymore. I cannot remember the last time my ears didn't ring.
