Hah! That is absolutely wonderful and makes my day because it's EXACTLY why I wrote the post. It's been a bar story for ages and I finally began to see the educational value. A friend of mine actually was so inspired to start targeting the demographic of guy she wanted to date and bring them to her profile! If you want to learn more (or be entertained more) that's pretty much how I'm writing all my content :)

I was just thinking to myself "What facebook ads?" What person with even a little bit of internet savvy is not using adblock these days?
smoochiepoochie ยท 37 points ยท Posted at 05:08:09 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
The internet in its current form wouldn't exist if the majority of people with even a little bit of internet savy used adblock.
TheJunkyard ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 08:45:57 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Except for the fact that the group "people with a little bit of internet savvy" is a tiny portion of the group "internet users".
smoochiepoochie ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:10:20 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Is it? I would say that's probably 20-30% of the internet.
TheJunkyard ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 14:44:07 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Maybe you have that impression because you hang out on the parts of the internet where that's true. Imagine the sheer volume of people out there using it for nothing more than browsing Facebook, playing Candy Crush Saga, ordering from Amazon, replying to spam emails and accidentally installing the latest Ask Toolbar into their already crowded Internet Explorer 8.
It's not just the older generation either, plenty of younger users are equally clueless. Most of them don't even care that they're being advertised to, let alone know how to install an extension to get rid of ads.

I'm internet hardcore for the last 13 years and I only got adblock within the last year. I also still leave it off for many sites because I want to support them. I use it only for protection against bad adverts, not ones which are just 'annoying'.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:17:32 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Oops, sorry, am I taking away from your projected revenues? Ah jeez, my apologies, I just told a few more people about it.
smoochiepoochie ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 05:22:22 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I use adblock too, so don't get all defensive. I'm pointing out a pretty obvious fact that when ad revenue dries up, content generating sites cannot finance their operations.
Suppafly ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:33:21 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
That's not an obvious fact at all. Plenty of sites have other revenue streams and if ad revenues dried up, other sites would certainly figure out new and better business models.
Your obvious fact is akin to saying that HBO would go away if they had to stop showing commercials during their programs...
smoochiepoochie ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:46:53 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
The only option which has met with relatively little success except for the big players (eg NYTimes) is to use pay walls for their content. Simply put, smaller content generating websites (eg. IGN), would not be able to recoup their revenue from ads any other way.
In your example, HBO is the big player and they are able to convince consumers to fork over extra for their service. This would not be the case for other less prestigious stations. If for some reason TBS could no longer show commericals (or people en masse simply stopped watching them), there is no way they could convince consumers (or cable companies by proxy) that this lost revenue should be made up by money directly from consumers. TBS would simply go bankrupt or would be acquired by another media conglomerate pretty shortly thereafter.
Suppafly ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:05:14 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
They are a big player now, they weren't when they started. TBS wouldn't go bankrupt, a ton of people would just start buying it, esp. now that they could get it without having a ton of channels they don't want. I have HBO but only ~10 other channels.
Personally, I wouldn't miss IGN, but I imagine the people that use the site regularly would pay for IGN Gold or something similar. They could also sell tshirts and stickers or work with game publishers to sell game pre-orders or any number of other business methods that don't involve displaying ads with their content.

If that were true, tv would have collapsed with the advent of the mute button and remote control. Aasahats will still pay to advertise because it's hell of a lot less humanitarian than paying taxes, and we all know industry is run by reptilians.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 05:46:21 on September 21, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
It's slightly different in that when you mute the ad, the content provider still gets paid. On the other hand, ads are sold both by pay per view and pay per click. We know nobody with half a brain clicks ads, but adblock stops the pay per view money.
TheNumberOfTheBeast ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:38:26 on September 22, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Afaik, Adblock is capable of writing a plugin that prevents from rendering ads onscreen without deleting them from the dom and canceling the image from being requested. My point is only that advertisers spend a lot of money on shit that nobody wants to see and many people do avoid, ignore and loathe them and yet it's still a profitable industry to be in (advertising) and because of this ads still happen despite nobody watching them. As far as Adblock, if they aren't rendering the image in a way that tricks the ad server into thinking it's been presented, it's only their own choice to do so. This comment seeks to justify spending in advertising by purporting that it supports content and culture, when the reality is that it absolutely does not. Imagine the billions of dollars spent on advertising the governement could grant out to artists and content producers if companies who advertise paid the same money in taxes instead. That's my rant against Madison Avenue for the day, having worked there for many years, I know why I feel this way, but others might not and so that's why I'm sharing this sentiment. Thanks for your opinion, please understand I am not critical of it, just proposing an alternate solution to getting content you might want to see into media channels other than advertising which I find wholly offensive, personally.

SilentSigns ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 16:36:46 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I'm just uncomfortable with telling everyone making content on the web that they can't make money off of me after we have all collectively spent decade(s?) creating a culture where asking for money from the consumer is basically guaranteeing you will fail.
holdpls ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:56:41 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I can understand that. I feel similarly about pirating, sort of -- haven't downloaded anything illegally since like 2009.
I don't think that asking for money from consumers guarantees failure, though -- people seem more willing now to pay for online subscriptions or a la carte content more than they were 10 years ago. But that's a separate argument, really.
I do use AdBlock, but it's largely because I pay for things I value. To me, it's not very different than using my DVR to fast forward through commercials.
I see it like this: if you've built your business around ads and that's your only form of revenue, and your content or product is valuable to me, I'll make an exception in AdBlock for your site. But if your content is just okay, and you need me to view ads that are disruptive to my experience on your site, I'm keeping them blocked and I probably won't visit your site again.
Numiro ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 09:34:35 on September 21, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I don't see a problem with paying for stuff with my time in case of commercials or nothing as in banners.
The option, long term, is to pay for everything you want to see with actual money, or become the target of advertisement, judging by how far advertising has come today, where I'm acctualy getting ads I'd be interested in, I can't see a future where I'd be unhappy paying for content with my time when I'm getting information about things I'd probably look for that info alone anyway.
approximated_sex ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 19:28:33 on September 19, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Not using adblock is my way of "paying" for free content and supporting content creators. The ads I'm usually exposed to don't bother me too much and I don't want online content creators to starve to death. It's a shame people don't even think about that when they install adblock.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:22:38 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Adblock has a function where the user can choose which sites to support by allowing ads. Unfortunately, with things like tracking and malware, many people feel it's no longer safe to give websites unfiltered access to their web browser.

ALL of the pages had some relevance to me! Most highlighted, and biggest recommendation/ad: George Taikei, with a big picture to the upper left. The targeting of someone she wants to date sounds devious and interesting. Do you have any insight into how she goes about doing that? Obviously "Met any girls named [GIRL'S NAME] recently? You should ask her out" is too obvious.
As for your own campaign, you just pointed the ads at already existing sites, right? You didn't create new websites for this, did you?
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 23:26:07 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I didn't create new sites, but found random existing sites that kind of matched the ads. It wasn't the ad that was the concern, it was the fact that the ad was appearing based on data Facebook had SOMEHOW collected. It was the collected data that was the horrifying part.
My friend is targeting guys who fit her demographic (age, location, interests, ... income lol) and sending them to a mini site which is basically a dating profile. They don't know who she is initially, she is pretty much asking them to ask her on a date with ads.

Facebook has already admitted to manipulating people's moods through their Newsfeed filters. Surely that falls under the category of subtle mind control. Now they just have to sell the keys to users/marketers as they've already done with the sidebar ads.

Facebook did news feed manipulation once(I can't remember if through ads or current events), in an attempt to see if they could change the moods of the people they were targeting. They measured mood changes by key words and phrases that the test subjects were putting in their FB status'. It was one of the most invasive studies mankind has ever seen on a scale that large. ๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 20:46:39 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
It depends on who will pay the most. Every single time you load a page on Facebook there's an auction happening for the ability to market to you. They likely are (in my opinion) over bidding (not that your not worth paying lots of money to advertise to...)
freecandysketch ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 20:58:04 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
That's really interesting. I actually studied advertising in college. But that was before Facebook ads were targeted. Back then Internet ads were almost all location based or related to the site you are currently looking at.
My classes were actually way more focused on print media, tv, and radio. This was not even that long ago (class of 08). But at the time it bothered me that they were so focused on traditional media and ignoring the future.
Granted we did have a lab where we tested the brains engagement in the same info when presented in different ways. So you probably have that study (or one like it) to thank for annoying slide show click bait articles. Sorry!

So using the targeting in facebook's ads she was able to identify features she liked in guys and have the ad only show up to those people. I can only assume that "bring them to her profile" was to an external dating site like OKCupid, but I might be wrong.

I sent this to my sister who is in marketing. She replied that she worked with someone who had very particular criteria for dating men. They plugged those criteria into Facebook as if they were targeting an ad and it said that there were only about 20 men in their major metropolitan area who met them.
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 21:31:47 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
So apparently your sister works with my good friend, Espree Devora of Outsource Your Love Life, who got that idea after me telling her this story. Small freaking world!
Also, Espree is single, hot, and in Los Angeles ;)

Google's Adsense is worse though. If I'm ever thinking of buying a product, I research it a bit, and then that exact product starts appearing in ads on websites everywhere. There's something super creepy about visiting a site in another country and seeing an ad for a product you are thinking of buying at the independent retailer around the corner from your home. Even when you turn the ad tracking option off, it still tracks you (the option must be optional to enforce). Get out of my head Google. Let me do my own research and make up my own mind, or at least show me ads from reputible retailers who are offering the lowest price. How about working with me, Google, instead of with them. It's my money I'm spending and my information you're using, so how about joining Team Holocaust__Denier and make those retailers work for my money.

What did you mean by "most effective when your targeting is specific and your creative is general" is that lingo, a typo, or is something flying completely over my mind. I get specific and general targeting of audiences but how can your creative be specific or general?

Awful advice. If he posts it for you, he will get the Karma for it. You want to reap all the Karma you can because there is a limited amount, and it is automatically redeemed for cash each Christmas and sent half to you, half to a children's charity.
You won't get these benefits if you have somebody else cross post it on your behalf.

RuneKatashima ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 17:23:41 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I'm only moderately tech-savvy. What does that do?
[deleted] ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 17:37:56 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)*
-l is the preload size of the ping in bytes. This is sent over automatically, as opposed to being split up into packets to send. Windows defaults to 32 bytes, so effectively /u/spinningpissingrabbi is saying to change the size to be 10,000 times the size of a regular ping. This is just another nice way of flooding the system with some large requests.
Edit for technical correctness. -l is preload size, which according to the man pages, specifies how much is sent over immediately.
HunterPredd ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 18:54:52 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
That could possibly work if you are sitting on a 100mb pipe, though most people's would be dropped by their ISP upon reaching max MTU of 1536 bytes which is the default allowable packetsize.
channingman ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 06:55:51 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I didn't understand that. Can you explain it like I'm 7?
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:36:07 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Don't know if you saw, but a user deleted their comment where I explained like he's 5. If not, here it is:
When you're trying to figure out of you can reach someone, you send them very little messages written on post its. It's not just any post it's either, yiu cut them into chunks that only represent a word at a time. They get it and construct it and respond so you know that you can communicate. This is done so thay if yiu can communicate, it's not cumbersome for the recipient. They barely notice. Now imagine that cut up piece of post it note was actually an entire bookshelf being sent at once. That's the ELI5 for setting the preload size to such a high number. Most people though disable this possibility so they don't have to read a bookshelf to figure out if yiu can communicate.
channingman ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:19:45 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

I assume it loops somehow. I'm not familiar with command prompt, but -l for loop would make sense. Not sure what 65500 is referring to though.
RuneKatashima ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:25:55 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
According to someone else it's changing the ping size (in bytes) from 32 to 65500.
In other words, a monstrous amount.
[deleted] ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 18:37:44 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I edited my response, but it's the preload size of the PING. IE, how much is initially sent over, as opposed to how much is sent over split up amongst a number of requests. Most systems though recognize this and block them by default though, not sure how accurate that is though.
RuneKatashima ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 18:57:16 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

In high school, at a tech trade school, they gave everyone laptops. Shitty laptops, but they played Quake2. And during lunch people would play and whine about dying, and lag and I hated listening to it. So I made a shortcut to run that ping command with the big payload. And I ran it about 100 times, along with two of my friends.
Right about when their whining about lag finally peaked, I couldn't stop laughing hard enough to conceal myself. The fattest one stood up and yelled he was going to slit my throat and got suspended.
tl/dr - ping flood denial of service attacks

Max MTU for most ISPs is ~1500 byte packets. Also most people's bandwidth wouldn't allows packets of that size. Might want to open multiple cmd windows w/ -l 1000. But once again, people will be maxing their bandwidth.

Programming on paper isn't so surprising. That's what, for example, I learned in my university in computer science. They would make us mostly code on paper, the first few years, to force us to plan ahead and properly "debug" our code without external help from IDEs or compilers.

This actually raises an important question that I have about ads - who clicks through them?
I'm in an older demographic and I was pre-programmed in the early days of the net as we know it to never click ads (nothing good comes of it.) As such, I use all sorts of add-ons (Ghostery, AdBlock, etc) to prevent ever seeing most ads. And the ones I do see, I scroll past or ignore.
Do ads (Facebook and elsewhere) actually matter and are people clicking them as well as finding satisfaction with what they find? I recognize that I'm part of an ever-shrinking niche of "never clicks ads" market, but are people actually clicking ads and finding new opportunities as consumers and with any satisfaction?
Ckrapp ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 19:08:08 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
On facebook, you can set it up as PPC so it doesn't matter if you don't click because the advertiser doesn't pay if you don't. But overwhelmingly, the intention with digital ads is moving away from driving the user to click. No one expects you to get up from your chair and respond to a TV commercial or a magazine ad, why would we expect user behavior to change that drastically with digital to the point we demand instant reactions.
[deleted] ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 19:15:28 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Makes sense.
I was wondering what the marketing approach was to members of an audience that are ad-hostile though - so desensitized to unsolicited ads that we just tune them out altogether? I KNOW there have been ads in my sidebar and news feed, as well as sponsored links (labeled as such.) However, I couldn't tell you what any of them were advertising simply because I am so conditioned to ignore them
How do marketers cope with audience members like me?
Are we a dwindling subset of a target market? Am I atypical based on the numbers?
wolfyr ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:56:42 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I'd like to know the answer to this as well
Ckrapp ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:58:23 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Well first and foremost, we have to make better ads. You see a blue million tv ads but some still catch your eye. Why is that? We can't expect to repurpose other media ads ( tv ads plopped onto YouTube) and have them work. It won't.
But yes. There's a huge shift. Like I mentioned, we can't have now archaic expectations of instant response on digital ads because they are"trackable". We need powerful digital ads that are appropriate for their format that draw you in and then we should track sales, traffic, and brand recognition like we always have and optimize accordingly. The good news is we can start with a targeted audience rather than the shotgun approach of mass media.
jerryFrankson ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:47:00 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Not at all. Ad and banner blindness is a very real thing, and a very real threat to the advertising industry. And it's not just on the internet that it's an issue: when listening to the radio a lot of people just tune out when they play commercials and people have always used commercial breaks on TV to make some coffee or to make a quick trip to the bathroom. Now they're talking about making commercials that can't be skipped with a digital video recorder.
That's making it worse, though. People ignore and skip ads because they don't like them. I strongly believe that the future of advertising will revolve around making ads that people want to see. Making them targeted enough that they're actually interesting to you. Or organising exciting events, like Red Bull does. Or making ads that are creative enough to go viral. Or starting awesome contests, like choosing the next Lay's flavor.
These things aren't easy to figure out, but they're gaining importance every day. You see, advertising is going to get very interesting in the next ten years.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:09:48 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
As a consumer who fits the "anti-advertising" profile, I actually and actively participate and enjoy ad campaigns that are clever, witty, entertaining, or even engaging. The Lays campaign, the "Old Spice Guy," and the KMart double entendre campaigns are all ones that are memorable to me. I even shared many of those links and videos with friends - certainly got me to pay attention. Depending on the broadcast campaign for those products, I'd even forego skipping the commercials just to watch them and be entertained.
I really hope so. I'm fairly sick of the traditional model of "just stick it out there and people will see it." You know the campaigns: the same generic copy, the celebrity pitch person (Amy Sedaris pitching laundry detergent? WTF?!), and the same cliche visuals. Want my eyes? Give me a reason to give a damn.

My favorite holiday is April Fools... and the best I've ever done was back in 2011. Background: The city I live in /r/Bellingham is about 15 minutes from the Canadian Border. A lot of the locals get pissed off because Canadians are all over our local area buying gas and milk all the time (and they always use the left hand lane on the freeway and go the speed limit or lower!
Suffice it to say, a lot of locals are not fans of the Canadian's in Bellingham. So for the prank I played off of this loathing by
Having my designer take the "Official City Seal" and create a real looking fake org called the Whatcom County Long Term Planning Committee
I bought the domain name WCLTPC.com or org (I really can't remember now)
Created a press release titled Strategic Conversion to the Metric System
sent it out via PRWeb / social sites / sat back and watched the ire grow!
End of the day two of the writers from our local herald called us out as April fools pranksters... But the big WIN for me was the Mayor releasing a statement (because they had received so many calls) that we were NOT converting to the metric system... it had all been an elaborate April Fools day prank! I truly hope I can one day top this!

Do it up! The targeting is the easy part, the magic is in the messaging.
Since doing this, Facebook has made the minimum audience 20 people. However if you're targeting a guy friend you can add the emails of 19 female friends and target only people in that audience who are Male. There are usually loopholes, just don't abuse them - it doesn't end well.

It says in here that you need at least 1000 people on the list: "Your Custom Audiences should have at least 1000 people to help ensure meaningful reach with your ads."
edit: or is it just a recommendation?
Geminii27 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 00:43:20 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
"should" is not "must".
Also, the more people the ad is shown to, the more you are charged, so Facebook has a stake in encouraging people to make larger demographic targets.

I've used this type of 'niche of one' targeting in the past as part of campaigns to promote B2B and enterprise products. When winning a large contract is worth millions of dollars, then it's worth the effort to target an individual. We've also found that it's good to combine (subtly) targeted PR, blog posts and landing pages along with the ads.
I'm interested in your experience that it's best to use general ad copy rather than targeted copy. Do you have any examples?
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 11:11:52 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Good question and great idea! I'll be writing more on this in future posts, but here's the gist. As a general rule of thumb, you want to keep the copy somewhen general and broad as no one likes feeling "targeted". For example, instead of saying "you have a dog and will want my product" you can say "having a dog is crazy and something like this solves this problem". You don't tell them that you know they have the problem, you're basically just saying it where they can hear it.
Someone else in this thread sent me a link to this and I think it might give you a bit more ammunition in the way of ideas. They didn't go after their target, they went after their target's friends.

Hilarious. Although I find it disturbing that Facebook allows you to send traffic to random websites. On Google you can only send traffic to one domain per account, and only if you own said domain. My guess is that Facebook will eventually have to do something similar.
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:48:16 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hmm, that would be a very interesting change. It would limit the marketing of a whole mess of affiliates doing awesome work (as well as those doing not-so-awesome work). Good distinction, it's just hard for them to sort out the good from the bad.
NbyNW ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:00:39 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:41:53 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
It won't be for long. There are a lot of people trying to bring light to the dark place (I'd like to consider myself one of these). Go to any affiliate conference and you'll hear some people talking about this kind of stuff (having fun, being nerdy, etc. - normal conversations) and other people who just want to pitch and use other people to make money.
I've always loved the mantra "you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with" and always try to cultivate those around me (ie not hanging out with assholes)

Why did you go to all the effort of putting his email into Excel and exporting it as a .csv when you could've just put it in a text file?
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:43:23 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Facebook only allows you to upload as a .CSV. It only took a minute to create it.
rawling ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:43:54 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
With only one column, a csv is indistinguishable from a list of email addresses. The screenshots on your page say ".csv or .txt format".
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:14:03 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Yea, I had only ever uploaded a .CSV so I did that. It was just a single cell in an excel document exported as a .CSV file and uploaded. Keep in mind that when I started doing this I had no idea if it would actually work.
OnlyForF1 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:40:05 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Open the CSV file in notepad and you'll see what he means :)
soulreapernecro ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:14:26 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
What they are saying is .CSV stands for "comma-separated values" meaning a .CSV with one value is just a .txt file with that one value.
You could just put his email in a .txt file and change the extension to .CSV. No shame in not knowing that as it's not usually relevant unless you're a programmer or similar(parsing files). I'd guess your roommate could explain.
Geminii27 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:50:15 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Roughly a week ago, facebook disabled custom audiences with UIDs that aren't obtained through your facebook app. Congratulations on the prank.
Daniel15 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:37:23 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
This is because the only people in an audience should be people that have read your Privacy Policy and have consented to being part of the audience. There's no legitimate way to obtain UIDs other than from an app you own that people use which is why the restriction is there now. All the shonky apps that let you scrape Graph Search and similar things are all against the advertising TOS.
naroush ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:12:29 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
makes sense for facebook and the users. sucks for the advertisers. I've heard from the crowd over at BHW and WF that the scrappers do some really good work (not sure how true it is).

I saw that when I was playing with a 2.0 prank :) I had waited two months to prank him and only did it when I saw the opportunity for experimentation. I'm not saying that you should find loopholes and exploit them, but pushing the boundaries is one of the best ways to learn and exactly what I love blogging about :) It doesn't always turn out well, but it's always a learning experience.

silvamagic ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:35:08 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
FYI Research at least as far back as 2010 have already identified this method of targeting a specific individual but consider it a security breach in Facebook's privacy controls (that clearly has still not been resolved) as it can be abused and used to anonymously harrass someone, as well as glean information on them supposedly hidden by privacy filters.
In OP's case, it was intended as a prank and he had concern for his roommates' well being / stopped before things went too far. At the same time, it is not so nice to think that someone with poor intentions could have used a very similar method. Just a word of warning.
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:38:19 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
OP here: I totally agree. It's listed in the post as an edit, but Facebook has made the minimum audience 20 people as a result of things like this. At the end of the day, they only implement policies to protect users, but there will always be methods for abuse.
The best thing about marketing is that anyone can do it, the worst thing about marketing ... is that anyone can do it.
silvamagic ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:50:35 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Considering Facebook has had 4 years since a published paper to address these issues (not sure how long since you played your prank, OP), I'm not sure whether making the minimum audience 20 people is really an adequate way of addressing the issue. Especially since you yourself immediately came up with a way to get around this minimum audience protection. Although it's a great prank, IMHO, more user-protection policies would not be remiss.
Obviously, any tool can be abused, but I do think microtargeting is an under-discussed issue in the Facebook privacy debate (maybe exactly because discussing it means teaching more people the way to abuse the system).
Daniel15 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:35:30 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Custom Audiences (the technology used for the ad targeting here) was only launced to everyone at the end of 2013 so they have not had four years to address this particular issue.
silvamagic ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:43:03 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
My comments are largely based on this paper in which the authors originally brought their concerns to Facebook in 2010. Although it may not have been called Custom Audiences, the targeting options available to an advertiser certainly seems very similar to what the OP described in his prank.
I can't however comment on whether those advertising options were available to everyone or not, so it is possible that its open availability is a relatively recent development.
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:39:14 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Yea, in my experience "where there's a will, there's a way" and that goes both ways. It will always be a cat and mouse game. The users are just caught in the crossfire. SOme marketers (like myself) do it to match products and services with people who need them, others just want to profit at any cost - that's what networks like Facebook spend billions working to prevent because they want you to spend as much time as possible on their platform.
silvamagic ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:32:15 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
The potential for abuse here is not really about unethical marketers looking to make a profit as it is about doxing, stalking, harassment, etc. I also don't really agree with your statement on why Facebook spends it's money, but even taking it at face value, there would probably be relatively few abuses of this sort compared to the number of advertisers who use Facebook as intended, so I doubt its factored into their calculations unless lots of attention was drawn to it.
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:45:35 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Just got adblock last week, and it's crazy how much it changes the layout of something like facebook. Without it, it's just a sea of ads that I never really noticed before.

Mostly to random sites. If he clicked an ad about the trouble swallowing pills I think it was to like a youtube video of an eating contest. Pretty much anywhere that wasn't connected with me.

[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 08:33:47 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
I almost did something like that to a friend once. He always read the news on one particular, well-respected, site and my plan was to setup my own server and add the news site to the hosts file on his computer when he wasn't looking. This causes the browser to connect to my site instead of the real site. My site would then just show the real site, but I would replace some stories with ones I made up. At first stories that weren't that far fetched, but eventually as crazy as possible.
Why didn't I do it? Because I realized several things could go wrong, such as:
So in the end, I realized I shouldn't do it. :(

I'm a day late but I hope you answer. I'm a marketing student and today we had a discussion in class in regards of using email and direct marketing. From your post, couldn't you just have used his facebook email to target him rather than his personal email? Also, what is your thoughts on Facebook email? Can it be used in a similar but serious campaign?
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:04:00 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks for taking the time to reply! And kudos on using "alternative sources" to learn ... those text books can be deadly to creativity ;)
Yes, I could have used either email. Anything that would have allowed Facebook to connect with his specific account. I believe that great marketing is all about the best utilization of the resources that you have (and have access to) so create your strategy by looking around to see what's there.
And no, Facebook doesn't allow for mass mailings to @facebook addresses. The only way to get those is to scrape them and it's against their TOS. If you're trying to target them you can just create an audience and have no benefit of going through the trouble to gather those emails.
Good questions!
kahrinn ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 08:50:38 on September 19, 2014 ยท (Permalink)

Just a question, I visited here and it says you need a 'at least 1000 people to help ensure meaningful reach with your ads'. Did they change the rules or am I doing something wrong?
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:57:25 on September 30, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
The key word there is "meaningful". In order to do any marketing campaign you should absolutely have more than 1,000 people in your audience and Facebook is recommending as much. However you have the physical capabilities to target down to an audience of 20 (and there are some loopholes that still allow you to target a single person).

[deleted]
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:51:34 on October 1, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
They have to be linked to Facebook profiles as there need to be a total of 20 profiles on the custom audience (so you'll need to filter out the other 19 in some other way). When you upload the emails, Facebook searches to see if any of those are associated with a profile and you need a total of 20 profiles on the list for them to let you target it.

Hey man I was looking into doing this for a friend but the ads look like they're going to cost at least $1.00 a day, so I won't be able to do it for a month for $2 like you. Any idea how you got it for so cheap?
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:33:50 on February 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Targeting. If the ad is only going to show for one person you're able to hone your audience and get the cost down. I used CPC ads with a max bid of $5, but only paid a few cents per click. Keep in mind that they don't have to be clicked to have an effect... the subconscious is a powerful force ;)
eleveneven ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:51:03 on February 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
The article states that we need an audience of at least 20, which brings the minimum of $1.00 a day into effect. I was under the impression that it was at least $1.00 a day plus the cents per click... Is it an either/or kind of thing?
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:57:04 on February 24, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Keep in mind that's your "daily budget" so it doesn't necessarily mean the entirety of it will be spent. I would recommend starting with something more straightforward to learn how the ads system works. It's a fun skill to learn. Amy Porterfield has some great beginner resources.

There are about fifty mutual friends that knew him during this process and had been seriously concerned with his mental well being ... when they found out why they laughed and became extremely fearful of what they said around me lol. To this day they all are pretty guarded around me and one of them (who was the other side of the original prank) refuses to leave her phone anywhere near me as she knows that she's next :)

hah, thanks for writing that up! Fantastic. BTW. when I went to try to add your blog to my RSS feed the link would not allow me to do so. Probably just a traffic issue, but when the spike dies down you should perhaps look into it. I was able to add the feed manually.

HokieScott ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:22:15 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
This is really cool and I admit a very good lesson on how to target niche markets. (Granted this was one person niche market). I would love to talk marketing, niche targeting and good ad copy sometime. (No, not trying to get anyone to sign up for anything)
BUT, I do think an evil revenge is being planned. May need to create targeted ads saying "Need Revenge?" "Helpful Short Manual to get the Best Results" at least earn a few dollars off his plan...
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:02:04 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hah, that's what the blog is for. Teaching people how to do marketing. The real reason this was successful was because of the messaging, not the targeting. That's the thing so many people seem to have trouble with.
HokieScott ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:04:50 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Ah! I saw the blog more after I posted. I agree messaging is very important! Target the right people with right messaging.

So here's a more sober concern. Couldn't a more malicious group conduct a spear phishing campaign against a wealthy or important person in this way? If your ads only have an audience of one, who will report links to malware? Does Facebook somehow screen the ads you upload? I wonder how many intelligence agencies take advantage of this.

I have had a similar and creepy and real situation happen to be recently. I live in Portland, OR. I was at my desk when a coworker spoke of Mandarin for lunch. At my desk, I sang the one-word them l theme song by a Canadian-Chinese buffet chain called, "Mandarin." I told her about the restaurant and we moved on. Not once was I connected to a device. At all. An hour later in my Google Now widget, it's making lunch suggestions for me and surprise, they suggest Mandarin cuisine. 3 days later, I'm getting served a banner ad for Toyota IN MANDARIN copy. The only explanation is that my phone was listening. We've all given it permission to and now it's a reality.

the first message is dated june 30, the last message is dated july 7. and your "friend"'s "YES! After a week of flipping out..." would suggest this transpired over a single week. You write "This gag went along without a hitch for just over two weeks" yet a mere two minutes has elapsed on your message screenshots. Why the discrepancy?

๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:25:28 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Nah, I just linked to things like articles, images, and videos that were somewhat related, but in no way connected to me. The magic wasn't the ads or the content, but rather silently illustrating (seemingly) how much Facebook knew about his life. Where they went was irrelevant.

This is one of the most brilliant things I have ever seen. You're a genius and have some cool friends :) lucky for you he doesn't use adblock :p Also your writing is great, don't be self-conscious!

That was brilliant! Now, if I could only turn this into money making marketing plan...
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 02:38:21 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Hah, follow my blog ;) I manage 3000+ ads for 10+ brands and created this blog to teach everything I've learned from absurd experiments like this. This experiment (and all effective marketing) is about targeting the right message to the right audience ;)
djazzie ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:32:30 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks! I'll give your blog a closer read.

And please, feed free to drop me feedback. Helping other people is my drug of choice so please tell me what you like, don't like, and want to see :)

Awesome! Details on how you budgeted the ads?
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 02:31:43 on September 17, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Not within this post, but there will be in the content I continue to post. In this case, I was using CPC with a maximum bid of about $2.00 per click (which I obviously never paid). Feel free to ask questions, that's what I'm here for!

RemindMe! 12 hours I pranked my roommate with eerily targeted Facebook ads and drove him to complete paranoia.

This is double the fun given that I never see ads on Facebook. I wonder how many people still don't know about Social Fixer.

If you still see ads on Facebook... In 2014... You are a dumbass.

Having suffered from paranoia in the past, I find this post slightly unsettling. It was a funny prank in a way though.
Who knows how much suffering you caused your roommate. But who cares right?
๐๏ธ KarmaCatalyst ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:17:36 on September 18, 2014 ยท (Permalink)
Nah, he's my best friend and I care a great deal (which is why I ended it when I did). The feeling of uncertainty is nothing less than horrifying.

Major thanks! It means a lot to hear that.
To this day he still is a bit jumpy around me and it cracks me up to no end.

How come the ads at the end (the one you posted and the one he posted a screen cap of) are different?
