My second grade teacher managed to split her finger down the middle with one of these. I mean, they saved it but it required a bunch of stitches, a cast, etc., and she had some sort of bandage or brace on it for the entire rest of the school year.

Reminds me of my shop teacher in Jr. High. She would give the average shop teacher don’t mess around you’ll lose a finger, pay attention you’ll lose a finger, you kids mess around too much, etc. Apparently the year I went to High School she lost a finger on the band saw in class. Pretty funny. I mean not in a haha kinda way (I really liked her... tough but fair kinda teacher) but very funny in a completely ironic way.

It fits a common narrative that a lot of older especially poorer people share (in America anyway)... real Americans get heart disease and die, they smoke and get cancer, they live dangerously and suffer the consequences face on - as if it’s some kind of protected birthright. Someone said that this is why repealing the ACA didn’t feel like they were cutting the branch they were hanging from to many. Real Americans die proudly of preventable disease. Scars and broken bones are worn like medals.

People still use these all the time. We're using less paper than previous era's but people still need all kinds of specialized bulk cuts for various art projects, flyers, and other collateral material.
