On the 15th of April I found a yellow post-it note in a handwriting that wasn't mine on my desk reminding me of some errands I had to do, but told literally nobody about. While odd, I chalked it up to something I did in my sleep, thinking maybe in my half-awake state I scrawled it so it didn't appear to be my handwriting. I threw it out and thought little of it.
On the 19th, I found another post it note on the back of my desk chair, in the same handwriting as the previous note, telling me to make sure I "saved my documents". I was freaked out, but there were no other signs of a break-in, so I set up a web-cam in my house aimed at my desk and used a security-cam app for it to record after detecting movement.
On the 28th, I woke up to find another post-it note, this one saying, "Our landlord isn't letting me talk to you, but it's important we do." I immediately checked the webcam's folder on my computer and found nothing from the night before, but my computer's recycling bin had been emptied, which I am certain I did not do recently, indicating someone had noticed the webcam and deleted the files. (They were just saved straight to a folder on my desktop called "Webcam".
Today, on the 1st of May, I found another post it note, this time on the outside of my door, with nothing written on itโ and there also appeared to be post-its on many other doors in my apartment complex, all blank, in varying colors.
Do I have any legal recourse here? I have no proof except for the post-its, but those are written by my pen and on my post-it notes, so conceivably I could have faked them. Would contacting the police get me into any trouble, if they can't determine an outside source for this? I just want to make sure I'm not wasting anyone's time.
Should I consult my landlord? Those also living in the complex?
EDIT: I pulled up a letter I received from my landlord back when I moved in, and the handwriting is identical. Could this count as evidence?

You seem sincere and this doesn't appear to be the plot of a Ray Bradbury short story.
It's possible that your landlord is leaving notes inside your apartment, but they don't make any sense in the context you're describing them.
It's likely that you are writing the notes yourself, but you are forgetting. Do you use post-it notes as reminders in any other parts of your life or job ?
Yes, this might be a mental health issue. You might be experiencing some sort of dissociative disorder.
Or it might be a physical problem. You mentioned that you have a very unusual narrow bedroom with no windows; is there a chance that you are not getting enough ventilation when you sleep, or that there is a carbon monoxide leak in the building ? A cheap CO detector (which you should have anyway) is a fast way to find out. You'll also have really bad headaches.
You know your own medical and mental history and your other experiences. If you think these incidents might be you, writing notes to yourself, there's no shame in getting somebody qualified to give you an opinion.

Thanks a ton mate! I'll have a quick read through before I crash it for the night and some more in the morning. I guess I'm curious as how the whole system works, from mining through to currency security and everything in between. I didn't jump on the Bitcoin train fast enough to delve into it and am a total newbie when it comes to digital currency, so I'm keen to have a look. Doge has 10X faster transaction confirmations than bitcoin, and the network can handle 10X more transactions per second than bitcoin. Aside from technical reasons, the main one is the community. It has the most adoption of any alternative to bitcoin. It's a fun and friendly and non-intimidating community. We don't take ourselves seriously, we just have fun.
Aside from that, you are right, there's no major advantage to doge over the other cryptos, they are all just different flavors of ice cream, if you know what I mean. Choose the one you like the best. Or better yet, don't choose just one, try em all!

It won't be profitable above electricity costs with your hardware though.

download one from dogecoin.com. i always recommend dogecoin-qt core, because it has the most features and offers the most control. But it takes a long to to sync, it has to download the full ~10.5GB blockchain to work. "Verify" isnt really necessary. All it does is request a cofirmation message that you see below. If you leave it out, then the transaction still happens, but it saves /u/dogetipbot the resources needed to make a confirmation post, which can be a lot as the bot gets overwhelmed at times.

I don't know if you're in a region where periods usually separate the thousands place from the hundreds place, but DogeTipBot is showing a dollar amount and a decimal. It lists fractions of pennies (because in digital currency those things add up). So he gave him 9 dollars, 91 cents, and 3/5 of a cent.

It's North American standard to use commas for digit grouping and a period for decimals. I'm in Canada and rarely see it the other way around. Granted it's much less obvious here because usually money isn't done to the thousandth.

Ambien is scary. My fiance is prescribed it but doesn't take it any more because of its effects. She said she's lost days on it. She took it a couple months ago to help sleep and it fucked her up. Hanging out and all of a sudden just stops, lays down and is knocked completely out. I didn't realize she took it so I thought something was wrong. When I tried to wake her her eyes were kinda rolled back and she couldn't say anything coherently. It was terrifying. All she was doing is mumbling. In her mumbling I finally picked up the word Ambien and realized that she had taken some and that was what had fucked her up so badly. So I let her sleep it off. The next day she had no clue any of that had happened.

When you delete a file from your computer, you aren't overriding the 0's and 1's on your hard drive. You are just telling the computer to ignore that part of the hard drive, that the data there doesn't belong to a file anymore. In the future, the hard drive will override that space with an actual file, but before that happens, you can run programs that scan those parts of the hard drive to find data. In many cases, it can find the files again, despite the operating system having forgotten where they were.

No, this is the absolutely first thing someone would check when looking for secret files. Checking 'deleted' files, i.e. files that are on the hard drive but ignored by the operating system. If you wanted to be sneaky, you'd just encrypt the files.
Analogously, encryption would be writing your diary in a language you invented yourself, whereas deleting the file would just be hiding it under your bed and telling everyone there was nothing under there.

Sometimes "wiping" it (setting all the bits to one value, precisely for this reason; doing more than deleting it from the file system but from the hard drive as well) can still be read, but it takes hardware not software to read the magnetic traces of data, When you do "multipasses," that is when it wipes the hard drive multiple times to make sure there are no magnetic traces of data.

No. One pass is enough. With modern densities, it is impossible to read data that has been overwritten with one pass. Even at not-modern densities, using magnetic force microscopy to recover overwritten data has never been proven in a lab, only theorized to be possible. Unless you still use floppy disks and have a government after you, the threat of magnetic force microscopy being used to read deleted data is non-existant. Even the guy who wrote the original paper theorizing about it has admitted it's probably impossible these days, and lots of research has turned up dead ends.
One pass is enough. Doing multiple passes wastes time, money, energy.
And with SSDs, multiple passes are harmful and not secure, since the controller shuffles writes around anyway.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) are both combustion products that are poisonous to breath, both of which will bond with hemoglobin, the molecule in red blood cells that is responsible for carrying oxygen (O2) throughout the body. Typically, the the greater amount of oxygen will be heading from the lungs to body tissue, while carbon dioxide will be picked up and carried away from body tissue back to the lungs to be breathed out.
The critical difference between CO2 and CO is the affinity with which each bonds with hemoglobin--how hard it is for the molecule to be released from red blood cells, particularly when it is in the lungs. CO has an incredibly high affinity for hemoglobin, bonding to it approximately 210 to 300 times stronger than O2. Once CO has occupied a binding site on hemoglobin, it will pretty much not go away. So when you breath CO, it quickly monopolizes the space that oxygen should occupy. With CO bound to hemoglobin, a person is effectively suffocated because oxygen cannot displace the CO.
As a side note, when a person is suffering CO poisoning, their skin will appear rosy and probably healthy. Oxygenated blood (in arteries) appears red. Deoxygenated blood (in veins) appears darker and almost blue, due to a change in 'oxidation state' of the iron atoms in hemoglobin. But if CO is bound to deoxygenated blood, iron will not appear blue, it will continue to appear red. So pulse oximetry (which functions on light and color of blood) will be inaccurate, if a person has been exposed to CO.

I misunderstood a post that he had made describing a narrow, windowless bedroom in a cheap apartment he was planning to move into in the future, and that's what put it in my mind that he was sleeping in a poorly ventilated space. That turned out to be true, just not for the correct reason.

It's my custom, especially in /r/legaladvice, to skim the OP's posting history to check for evidence of shenanigans or for useful background information.
What's particularly interesting is that I misunderstood his post, having only glanced at it. He was posting about a skinny windowless bedroom he was considering moving into, not one that he lives in now.
It's immaterial, except for the fact that it suggested that the OP lived in a poorly ventilated room, which helped lead to the wild shot suggestion that chronic carbon monoxide exposure was responsible for his memory loss and confusion.

Seeing a doctor should be your priority for two reasons: you could be having a serious mental or neurological problem, and even if you're not, that will probably be the police's first thought. If you have a general practitioner, make an appointment ASAP. They'll be able to get the ball rolling and make appropriate referrals. Bring in the notes and the sample of your landlord's handwriting so your doctor can look at them.

I think you over-estimate what is "fairly easy" for the average person. I'm going to go out on a limp and suggest most landlords wouldn't know this.

I mostly agree, but it's far from impossible that the landlord is something of a "neckbeard" and will laugh at the attempted security. any semi-competent IT worker for example will probably know how to bypass passwords using a live-cd.
OP should still have a password, just have realistic ideas about how much security it provides against what threats. ie no security at all against someone who has moderate computer knowledge and physical access to the machine.

OP should have a password, just as you should have a password; that's sufficient security for most people. That's about all I do for security. But passwords aren't secure against a local attacker. You insert a CD, reboot the computer, and you're done. It takes all of one minute -- thirty seconds if you use a USB drive rather than a CD. A braindead monkey with a BAC of 0.8 could do it. You can't rely on difficulty to prevent people from doing it.
Pretty much everyone who has ever used Linux knows about booting from a CD to bypass passwords. Every sysadmin knows about this. This is a standard thing you use when installing Linux or when addressing a number of issues, so you can't even rely on its obscurity to prevent people from using it.
I don't worry about a local attacker so I don't defend against that type of attack. OP is specifically worrying about a local attacker, so OP must defend against that type of attack.
If I had the same security concerns as OP, I would use full disk encryption. It's available with Windows 7 Enterprise (unfortunately nothing cheaper), OS X, Linux, *BSD, ... Unfortunately, Windows 7 doesn't let you encrypt the operating system drive, so it might take some juggling, and it's also slightly more prone to attacks. But this still moves you from "any sysadmin can do it in two minutes" to "it takes a keylogger or hacking about with Windows internals". Anyway, this might be a half hour to set up with some tutorials online.
Beyond that, a BIOS password, setting the boot order to my OS drive first, and disabling the boot selector should do reasonably well. Ten or fifteen minutes to set up.
Not a huge price to pay when someone is repeatedly breaking into your house and messing with your computer and can bypass your Windows password in thirty seconds. Of course, at this point, you've changed the attack from deleting the relevant files to destroying your computer, so maybe that's not the best plan...

Yes, you are correct that a password isn't foolproof protection, and perhaps some people need to be told that. But it's not nearly the Paul-Revere-esque task you seem to have set for yourself.

Have an old smartphone and a wifi connection? Set up a dropcam that is saving to the cloud and not to local storage. A quick google search should point you in the right direction.
As others have said you sound both sincere and way way too calm about this. A check in with a mental health provider is probably not a bad idea. Same with checking in with your neighbors.
Also out of sheer curiosity why are the dimensions of your room so strange and what is up with the whole bed looking like it was built in the room? Do the dimensions for all of the spaces you know about add up? No odd voids?

Apartment Maintenance professional here. There's not a lock made that I cannot get into with a handy specialised tool for whatever lock the resident has installed. Most landlords have them, and can use them in a pinch. (lock outs, evictions, inspections, emergencies, etc.)
But a landlord should never ever enter a unit without consent or without loudly knocking and announcing the entry, and they better have a very good reason for that violation of privacy.

Perhaps I could have worded that differently. We have several tools, depending on the lock. Most are off the shelf products available through HD supply, (the largest property management supplier in the US). So yes, we need a handful of tools, most good management companies have them.

This was the major red flag for me. It sounds like OP was bullshitting some 'nosleep' type story, and once the guy came in and diagnosed the CO poisoning, he went along with it. It really is an effective 'end conclusion', because he can simply blame all holes in his story on the poisoning.

The original diagnosis was inherently vague; the 'headaches, detector' were added ex post facto in response; and the story about the thin room from the comment history was mistaken in the first place (he hadn't moved in yet), which again was rectified with retroactively changing his story and some theorizing that he made the original reddit post while delirious.
