I actually have the opposite experience with neckbeards and Nintendo. I was at a party where the host had a Wii U and we all decided to sit down and play some Mario Kart. We were having a blast: launching bananas at each other and cursing whoever launched a blue shell WHILE I WAS IN 1ST PLACE (GO TO HELL, PRICK) when a wild neckbeard emerged from the shadows to announce "... heh. Hey Nintendo, haven't you ever heard of anti-aliasing?"
Nobody acknowledged him. Not even enough to say "shut up, nerd". We were having too much fun. So the neckbeard went back to the corner and talked to nobody.
Long story short, a neckbeard thought we'd stop having fun if only we knew the magic of anti-aliasing.

I think the difference lies between "atheist" as a casual descriptor versus "atheist" as an identity. Nobody wants to hang out with "Chuck, the Self-Avowed Atheist", but plenty wouldn't mind hanging out with "Chuck".
I'm an atheist, but I have plenty of religious friends. Religion has literally never needed to come up as a subject of discussion when we're hanging out, even though it's no secret to anyone in the group.
Same with the FSM. Originally it mocked the idea that God as the creator of the universe was a necessary assumption to understand the latter, but it quickly degraded to plump mockery of any notion of a deity... or rather of the Christian idea of God because surprise, neckbeards aren't actually about atheism as a byproduct of enlightenment at all but more about brainless anti-Christianity, which is why they tend to hijack paganism too.

Someone who is religious can act like a neckbeard without being an extremist. The fact that someone who is a cringey religious activist typically wouldn't be called a "neckbeard", and would just be called an activist, is what MyNthAccountThisWeek had an issue with I'm pretty sure.

I was a Mormon missonary for two years in Indiana. We put in 10-hour days, didn't have regular access to the Internet, weren't allowed to call home more than twice a year and had to wear white shirts and ties almost all the time. We had from 10am-6pm off every Monday to wash clothes, write letters and play basketball or whatever. Oh, and we didn't get paid. Still a great experience, and I met some awesome people.
Let me tell you a secret: Almost everyone under-utilizes Mormon missionaries. When they ask if there's anything they can do to help you, they mean it. Need wood chopped? Done. Have a bunch of dog turds in the backyard that need to be picked up? Say no more. Need your lawn mowed? No problem. And they don't accept payment. They will probably ask to share a quick message or prayer with you after they're done, but if you just tell them no then most will respect that.
Just sayin'...if you need free labor, ask the missionaries.

I actually have the opposite experience with neckbeards and Nintendo. I was at a party where the host had a Wii U and we all decided to sit down and play some Mario Kart. We were having a blast: launching bananas at each other and cursing whoever launched a blue shell WHILE I WAS IN 1ST PLACE (GO TO HELL, PRICK) when a wild neckbeard emerged from the shadows to announce "... heh. Hey Nintendo, haven't you ever heard of anti-aliasing?"
Nobody acknowledged him. Not even enough to say "shut up, nerd". We were having too much fun. So the neckbeard went back to the corner and talked to nobody.
Long story short, a neckbeard thought we'd stop having fun if only we knew the magic of anti-aliasing.

I think the difference lies between "atheist" as a casual descriptor versus "atheist" as an identity. Nobody wants to hang out with "Chuck, the Self-Avowed Atheist", but plenty wouldn't mind hanging out with "Chuck".
I'm an atheist, but I have plenty of religious friends. Religion has literally never needed to come up as a subject of discussion when we're hanging out, even though it's no secret to anyone in the group.

I was a Mormon missonary for two years in Indiana. We put in 10-hour days, didn't have regular access to the Internet, weren't allowed to call home more than twice a year and had to wear white shirts and ties almost all the time. We had from 10am-6pm off every Monday to wash clothes, write letters and play basketball or whatever. Oh, and we didn't get paid. Still a great experience, and I met some awesome people.
Let me tell you a secret: Almost everyone under-utilizes Mormon missionaries. When they ask if there's anything they can do to help you, they mean it. Need wood chopped? Done. Have a bunch of dog turds in the backyard that need to be picked up? Say no more. Need your lawn mowed? No problem. And they don't accept payment. They will probably ask to share a quick message or prayer with you after they're done, but if you just tell them no then most will respect that.
Just sayin'...if you need free labor, ask the missionaries.

I bet most people on reddit are atheist. Redditors like jokes over literally anything and everything though and nerdy awkward atheists are an easy target. This whole website used to be an atheist haven but as it became more mainstream, people became less and less tolerant of atheists who dont hide their beliefs. Its ironic because in the real world, religious people are the ones that like to bring up God in conversations, theyre the ones that get mad when "you take the lords name in vain", they go house to house asking you to join their church, they lobby the government, they protest funerals for gays and try to end funding to planned parenthood, they mutilate their children as an offering to their god, they spread homophobia and misogyny, they literally start wars over their beliefs. But on reddit, atheists are the bad people because they are annoying and "cringey".
