It was pretty interesting, lots of talks on upcoming features with server '16. I learned a good deal about powershell automation, new management tools, MS storage spaces and other relevant shit to my job. Plus I got a week of free food and beer and didn't have to take PTO
Edit: OOps, you meant what do THEY do at the conference. There was totally a lot of one-upsmanship there, like typical IT nerds do. They can never admit they are wrong. I saw one middle aged woman riding an escalator with a my little pony doll and she was positioning it on the railing and taking pics of it with her phone. This was in a crowd of like 10k people. I wanted to assume that she was doing it for her toddler back home or something, but I don't think that was the case. I think they were right at home during the conference. They generally aren't in the majority unless it's a special nerd event like that or comic con or something.

Richard Stallman is a very vocal proponent of free, open-source software. VERY vocal. Anything that is not free and proprietary (the very definition of Microsoft, especially pre-Nadella) would incur his wrath. Not just software, too - the only approved hardwares are old Thinkpads that have documentations for every piece of the hardware.
He's famous for a copypasta that is a mish-mash of the things he said before, basically a very nitpick of the free, opensource Linux kernel, and it goes like this:
"I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Back in college my friends and I saw this particular kid who fit the neckbeard bill pretty well - long greasy hair, poorly styled glasses, horrible posture, wolf shirts, overweight, etc. Except there was something particular that we noticed - every time we saw the kid, he would be running. Like just fucking booking it, not giving a damn that other kids would look at him funny (he probably didn't even notice) because he had his backpack strapped on and his full casual attire on, jeans and hoodie, no running shorts or anything. So it was obvious this kid was just running around campus either to class or the dorm or dnd meet ups not giving a damn how silly he looked. I kinda admired that free spirit, so my friends and I ended up giving this kid a nickname: "Quest Kid", because in video games you just run at full speed while going quests. It kinda became a thing to say "Oh shit there's Quest Kid!" or to mention that you saw him at the dining hall. He was like a rare animal or something you got excited to spot on this campus of 20k kids. Every time I saw him he was running, except for one time he had a to-go box from the dining hall. I guess his quest was complete.
There were a couple other unique characters my friends and I would identify over the years as well, but your post brought back those memories.

We had a kid that didn't wear shoes or a shirt ever, until he was right about to walk into a building. Like mid January in Maryland, 30 degrees, and here comes a kid riding a bike in just gym shorts (also he ride a bike w no shoes wtf). You'd see him slip on a tshirt and sandals right before walking into a lecture hall. People are weird, but yeah, I also admired that free spirit. Can't imagine he got laid though.

God yeah. My community college does classes for high school kids, you look at some of those kids and you can see it growing in them like a cancer. The college age kids, they all hang out in this dark corner of the student center playing MTG, but good lord the stench.
Maybe they smell so much because they're carrying around like 4 binders of cards everywhere they go, I dont know. I do know I've never seen anyone female near there.

Depends on what you consider a neckbeard. For example my roomate is a semi-pro gamer (Smite), who puts about as much time into it as a part time job, maybe even a full time job, just a lot of hours, and he's won over 10k already this semester. He's not exactly a looker either. If all you knew about him was how he looked and what he did with his free time you could easily believe he was a classic neckbeard.
But, he maintains a 4.0 in one of the most challenging engineering majors at a good university (A&M). He doesn't really look it, but he takes care of himself. And he has significantly better luck with women than I do. (In my defense I haven't really been trying.) He can also get plastered and kick my ass at any console game, when I'm not only sober but strung out on Vyvanse.
By comparison I'm much more physically fit, signigantly more conventionally attractive; and while each of us are more knowledgeable on different subjects, I'm not nearly as smart as he is (spent the first 2 years of college barely hanging on to that engineering major and still under 2.5). If he wanted to feel superior to try and justify himself like so many neckbeards do, it would be easy for him to lord his intelligence over me. Though in all honesty I find most neckbeards can't actually back it up.
If you can respect, but are not intimidated by, the strengths and weaknesses of others, and can be confident in your own strengths while recognizing your own weaknesses; people will find it much easier to like you and will usually respect you for it.
More than anything I see being a neckbeard or a gentlesir as an attitude. If you're down to earth, recognize things that do and don't matter, and don't patronize other people, then I think you can spend your free time however you want (so long as you don't completely give up on maintaining some semblance of health).

Oh my. I had the pleasure of waiting on a gentlesir and his trusty sidekick one night.
When I approached their table for the first time to greet them and get their drink orders I noticed the main gent first due to his fedora. As the exchange went on I became increasingly excited that as luck had it, they were sat with me. The main guy asked for a beer we didn't carry and responded to the news with such a theatrical disappointment, Daniel Day Louis would be proud. Next I noticed he was holding a vaporizer. Not just any vape, mind you. Oh no. This gentlesir made sure his was modified in the finest steam punk fashion. Second gentlesir was much more tame when he ordered his beer as his friend pondered the drink menu with his hand on his chin. When the first guy finally decided what he wanted, my amusement continued as he ordered an angry orchard. Some costumes are definitely awesome but at the ones I've been to, it seems like half the people just view it as "cosplay anything remotely counterculture/nerdy". I've seen doctor who, anime, really anachronistic stuff, to name a few. Also, it's more debatable, but I think the typical renfaire thing is supposed to be European centered, and I've seen things like samurai.
I mean it's not a big deal and they're not hurting anyone, but I dunno.

Well, the Renaissance is a strictly European concept, isn't it? It was Europe rediscovering its classical roots (among other things), and doesn't particularly apply to Japan (which was still firmly in the middle of its Medieval period anyway).

I would argue that Japan's medieval period didn't end until the beginning of the Tokugawa shogunate, or at the very least the advent of gunpowder and the revolutionization of infantry tactics under the Oda clan in the late 16th century-which was at the tail end of the European Renaissance.

I felt super bad because when I went to the one in Texas. I went with my bf and a couple of friends. We were all going to dress up. My bf even got a costume special just for it... But I'm allergic to Texas in the fall, I guess, and I was completely, physically miserable the whole time I was there. So I didn't end up getting dressed up, and the people we were going with decided they were too lazy or tired or something so they didn't dress up, and my bf didn't want to be the only one in the group that did. So he didn't and was super bummed about it. (though he did get to wear it for Halloween at work)
It's too bad we can't go back, he has a much cooler outfit now! But he'll be able to wear it to local gaming cons and be a dork! :) I'm super impressed with it, it's from the last of the Mythical movies.

Most mead I've had was the same as a white wine or light sake - generally around 12%. I did have a 15% once, but the flavor wasn't very good. To get plastered on a single bottle, it must have been liquor-strength, or OP is exaggerating.

It's only coming back into popularity recently with the rest of the homebrew/craft microbrew wave.
In Detroit there's a "meadery" that puts the bees in different fields and orchards so that the honey itself, before they put in the spices and whatnot, has the flavor of apples or cherries or wildflowers and such. It's fantastic.
They can temper the sweetness, but really it's like drinking a Redd's or similar hard ciders, but the texture and flavor is different.

Some people get a proper kick out of this stuff though. I accidentally saw a friend's reddit name when they were showing me a post on their laptop once and decided to snoop once I got home. This person is massively liberal, actively campaigns for general equality for various minorities, has plenty of socialist views, volunteers for students with disabilities and is also of islamic descent (not sure if they are a practising Muslim).
Basically the entire profile was shitposting on TheDonald, redpill "stories" and lots of MLP stuff. Reading it and knowing this person quite well im pretty sure its all literally a joke and just a way for them to create a persona the stark opposite to them.

I am guessing these neckbeards were rejected by other guys, and never invited to go out, so they react by associating everything that normal guys do as stupid and worthless.
They fucking hate the idea of going to bars because no one ever invited them to drink at the bars. I've known guys like this at college. They pretended to hate alcohol and said that's why they didn't drink and go out. In reality, nobody wanted to drink with them.

I was born in Rochester, grew up in Syracuse, moved back to Rochester for school and now I live here permanently (just bought a house in Irondequoit).

I mean honestly. Rum is so versatile and delish. Vermouths are pleasant. Vodka....eh. General whiskey is nice by itself too. Every kind of alcohol has its "benefits" and is nice it's own situation.
