I hate how neckbeards think that logic is better than emotion. Emotion is what makes us human. I'm not saying you shouldn't consider logic to help make decisions, but a purely "logical" society would be absolutely terrible.

Exactly. I had to take some study for extra credit and it determined that I'm primarily an emotional decision maker. I'm sure some neckbeards on Reddit would say that I should be more logical.
You hear about a solider running back into enemy fire to save someone? That's emotional based decision making. You can't only make decisions based off of emotions obviously, but you can't be 100% logical your whole life, that's not what it means to be human.
this is actually a good point. if we all thought logically the human race would be a mess. Think about the soldier example again. if we made only logical decisions firemen would never go into a house to save someone. or a police officer would run away at the sight of a criminal having a gun. Logic is good for most things but we would be a completely selfish, self-centered society, if all we used was logic to make decisions.

I honestly see no difference. People as it is today, are incredibly selfish and self-centered with a huge helping of narcissism when it comes to emotional logic. You can't reason with emotional logic, but we do need it occasionally to remind us that we are human.

Yeah we just need to understand our thinking and when it's emotionally based and when that's bad. Unconscious bias in hiring is largely a result of emotional based decisions.

A lot decisions when dealing with people or morals are based on emotional intelligence, whereas decisions when dealing with finances are based on logical intelligence
Yeah, the survey was kind of weird because it asked me what I would do, not what I should do. One of the questions I could remember was "what would you do, buy equipment for a home gym or pay a monthly gym membership?" and I chose the gym membership because that's what I do. It's more social and I can get access to a basketball court and better equipment, which is worth more money for me.
I don't know why I'm getting into this, it was just weird like that. I agree that logic is more for financials though. You don't really have to be one or the other, everyone just kind of favors one side or the other.
Vulcans do in fact have emotions; however due to the depth of their emotions, and the possible violent outcomes of these emotions, they feel the need to control and mitigate all feelings in order to function. There is a sect of Vulcans who do not subscribe to these beliefs, and they are called the V'tosh Ka'tur. So, technically, even Vulcans practice emotional intelligence.

We really have no idea whether animals ask why because we filter our understanding of them through our constrained purview. It's tautological.
IMO it's pretty clear, at the very least, that larger mammals such as elephants, whales and gorillas use logic and emotion similar to our own.

Emotions are only developed in higher order animals with larger brains and people who are "special" have trouble self-regulating emotions and have two dimensional emotions. If anything, emotional intelligence is vastly important to human existence and success in life.

Even beyond emotional response in my opinion. For musicians and I'm sure even non-musicians, a piece of music can be written so well that it gives chills (song structure, phrasing, timbre, chord choice, etc.) So I feel like the person completely is missing the beauty of music emotionally and logically.

I think its connected to the central nervous system. Its like how women are more prone to tears because the tear system and the lactation system are connected.
Music stimulates the nervous system and illicits an emotional and physical response.
I get goose bumps and hair standing on end from music but I am extrodinarily sensitive in general, lots of mundane things trigger large reactions in me.
My husband isnt sensitive and never has these reactions to music although he enjoys it emmensely.

It came to its current meaning thanks to 4chan. The word "wapanese" was being used to an alarmingly annoying degree in the site's early days, so moderators made a word filter to replace it with "weeaboo," for reasons that made sense to 4chan.
Do you know how there's a common reddit post of a guy kinda of shrugging his shoulders and a lot of people mess up and lose the left arm? The trick is to use three back slashes.
4chan had it's own silly shit like posting a triforce because otherwise the top triangle would be inline with the bottom left one unless you knew to use a zero space character first.
Another trick was to post "hands free fapping" because if you tried to post it you'd receive a 48 hour ban and your post wouldn't go through.

Technically a weeb is someone who tries to be Japanese when they aren't. Just watching anime and playing pokemon, even if you are a neet, doesn't really make you a real weeb.
Aren't they different though? My understanding has always been that a weeaboo is someone who tries to act "Japanese" (or their perception of what a Japanese person is) because they're obsessed with some facet of the culture (usually anime.)
Whereas an otaku is someone who is obsessed with and dedicates an inordinate amount of time to something i.e. idol otaku, anime otaku, game otaku, etc. It doesn't specifically pertain to Japanese things, and it doesn't necessarily mean that they're trying to act or become Japanese.
Isn't hikikomori just the Japanese term for shut-ins or recluses. AFAIK, that doesn't have anything to do with anime, TCGs, or anything else specifically Japanese.

When I took first year Japanese at university our professor described otaku as basically that "creepy obsession of anything, like beyond the point of normal" in which there were quite a few people who sunk in there chairs. That class was full of people who only wanted to learn Japanese because of anime. Which you know what, that's fine. If anime is what motivates you that's cool find that motivation. These kids were priding themselves on being "otaku" and so I think the prof taking jabs like that hit them in the pride gland

'Otaku' is a Japanese term for someone with an unhealthy obsession with something, basically. It's not necessarily anything to do with anime, you can have idol otakus, train otakus etc, but it is necessarily derogatory.
"Weeaboo" originated in the west and was originally used in place of "Wapanese" to describe someone obsessed with Japanese culture to the point of delusion and cursing their own heritage. Again it's not inherently connected to anime, although it usually is in practice.
Both words have kind of become twisted over time as "weeaboo" has been applied to anyone who likes anime in an embarrassing way while some westerners have picked up on "otaku" as just meaning "someone who likes anime" and have started applying it to themselves bereft of its negative connotations (while people who do know what it means continue to regard it as an insult), but they were originally used for pretty different purposes.
While I am no too fond of the word otaku, I'd like to point out that the meanings of words evoleve e.g. nerd and geek.

They aren't exclusive terms, but an Otaku is obsessed with something so much that it disrupts their work ethic/social life/personality.
A Hikkikomori means a person that recluses themselves from society for a period of 6 months or longer.
Not all people who are hikkikomori are obsessed with something like an otaku, but being cut off from social interaction does provide an environment for obsessions to grow more extreme. It's a case by case situation.
I like me some anime, but only to the same extent that I like other shows. I won't take the 'otaku' label because i'm just not that radical of a fan...
I mean, anime is a medium. It's not even a genre. Being a fan of anime is like being a fan of music, or movies.

Hey, I just want to chime in here to express my opinion that Anime is mostly shallow and childish bullshit. Also, in my experience, most people who are into it tend to be creepy manchildren with emotional issues. That's my opinion, some people share it with me, you do not. It's ok though

While a lot of the more popular shows (e.g. Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, etc...) tend to be shallow and childish, as someone said earlier in this thread, "anime is a medium, not a genre." Even though the medium does have a lot of trash, there are plenty of great anime shows and movies that cater to more mature audiences (such as Psycho-Pass, Steins;Gate, Clannad: After Story, Perfect Blue, Ghost in the Shell, etc...). I can understand not being interested in the medium, but as a whole it's pretty decent and probably on par with a lot of western media.

Well, think of people who are born deaf. They not be able to enjoy music in the same way we can, and they (probably) won't care for it as much as we do, but that doesn't leave a void in their soul. There are so many other art forms that are just as fulfilling as music, from poetry, literature, cinema, videos games, etc to things like interpretive dance or maybe even sculpture.
Music is rad, sure, but you shouldn't take pity on people who aren't into it. Kind of a dick move. It's like when people give me shit about not liking football. It's the entire world to some people, but I certainly wouldn't say I'm missing anything by not even thinking about for weeks at a time.

I don't want to start an argument but I don't see how all music can possibly sound the same...
I mean, I could tell the difference if I listened close, but it's all really just background noise. Metal, rap, classical, pop, jazz, it all sounds really similar to me.
I'm not going to argue about it, because my sister can tell rap artists apart like Eminem and Kanye, so there's probably a lot I'm not picking up.
You can't tell the difference between a black guy and a white guy talking? Rap isn't really singing, you can hear their talking voice. Have you ever had your hearing checked? You can be suffering from hearing loss but not notice due to the weird ways the brain can cope with losing a sense.
Not since elementary school when they tested me with all sorts of specialists and all they got was I've got some form of tinnitus. It doesn't bother me much.
Also, I have a lot of trouble telling people apart beyond size and hair/skin color. It's probably a pattern recognition thing rather than specifically hearing problem.
Sounds like the speakers are just vibrating and people are singing. Metal might have more background static, but there's plenty of pop with lots of background noise too.

Attenuate your nervous system responses if you're so concerned about constant stimulation. Go run a mile everyday and when you shower switch the water to cold before you finish. Be aware of your heart area while giving appropriate amounts of focus to the center of your brain, or wherever you feel you really "hear" the music. For me at least, this is where I can synthesize the best feelings from music.
C'mon, at least try it out, music is one of the happiest, most productive things that humans have ever managed to tap into. It's a worthwhile endeavor, I promise you.
I am a musician, so it would be safe to say I'm really really into it! What I meant by trying it out tho was practicing listening to it. The enjoyment of music isn't a passive act if one desires make it more than background noise. Since you say you are a visually inclined person, may I suggest you check out this video and pretty much every other video on this channel? :)

the ear is evolved to prioritize the frequencies in human speech. For obvious reasons, the ability to understand human speech is one of the last things to go. You can loose the ability to hear lower and higher frequencies useful for distinguishing musical tones and still be able make our peoples speech.
If you've either gone deaf over a long period of time, or were born with bad hearing you might not know the difference.
I love music and can talk about my favorite albums for hours. If I didn't like music I'd feel like a piece of me was missing, liking music and beats and rhythms is such a natural thing.

I think his 60's stuff, for as good as it is, is overrated.
If i were to start someone on him, i think I'd go with a couple different songs to get a feel for him:
Isis, Hurricane, Tangled up in Blue, Tough Mama, When the Ship comes in, Ring Them Bells, Meet Me in the Morning, Dark Eyes, Duquesne Whistle, Thunder on the Mountain, Lovesick, Someday baby, Seรฑor (tales of Yankee Power), You ain't goin' nowhere, Lay Lady Lay AND (finally) The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar.
If you listen to all those, you'll have a REALLY good feel for his stuff. Just a warning tho: if you get into him, and check out his 80's stuff, for whatever reason, he kept a lot of his best work off his albums, including what many believe to be his best song ever: Blind Willie McTell (it's top 5 for me)

I never liked Radiohead, David Bowie, or the Arctic Monkeys until recently, same with ODESZA or Flume. Now they're some of my favorite bands/artists. Thanks for the recommendations!
Basically, he's like The Beatles of rap. Whether you like him or hate him, he's probably the most influential artist in rap history. Everyone is influenced by Kanye, he ended gangsta rap's popularity, popularized EDM in America, popularized a lot of different sounds, discovered a bunch of artists, made it "cool" to sing and show emotion in rap, etc.
Personally, what makes him my favorite artist is that he raps a lot about himself and what's going on in his mind. I've found that I, as a sometimes hot headed and outspoken person who says the wrong things sometimes to people I care about, can relate to Kanye's personality a lot. He has an "artistic vision" for all of his albums, they all have a distinct sound and themes prevalent in the whole project; the only other rapper I've seen pull that off as well is Kendrick Lamar.
The constant contradiction of an extremely narcissistic and self confident person who is riddled with self-doubt and insecurities is fascinating too. If you don't like rap and don't ever see yourself liking it, I don't think Kanye would change your mind. If you have an open mind to the genre, listen to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy straight through and listen for the themes and how the album has "Acts", like a play.
I just find him completely unable to relate to. Aside from not really liking anything of his I've heard, in any interview I've seen with him, he seems like a completely narcissistic asshole who can't finish a thought or sentence. He's very boastful and seems to feel like he deserves to be idolized. I'm more into the underground music scene and that's given me a lot of opportunity to meet various rappers that I would say are very well known (Watsky, CES Cru, and Kung Fu Vampire being some of the most memorable) and they were all so humble and just happy to be there. Like they never expected grandeur and now that they've made it to that point all they want to do is show their fans how much they appreciate them, and I feel like Kanye doesn't have that same appreciation for fans.
Kanye appreciates his fans, he hates the media. He is a man who famously remastered Stronger 70 times to try to get the drums right (for his fans) before finally settling on the first one. He definitely cares about fans.
Kanye can't finish a sentence, you're right. I think he has some sort of ADHD. I can't see why you can't relate to him and if you don't like his music, that's fair. I'm just explaining why he's my favorite artist.

As a music educator, I come across students who feel absolutely no connection to music at all! However, I have learned most people will eventually enjoy music once they start making it themselves. When you are playing an instrument or singing, your brain is being activated in many areas so it's hard not feel something....even if it's a feeling of disgust.

My girlfriend is same way; loves music, just doesn't wanna hear it all the time
What's weird is that I love playing music, but I almost never listen to it (unless I'm playing it). I honestly can't remember the last time I sat down and just listened to a few songs.
Everyone I've known to 'not like' music have been some form of crazy. One kid I went to school with said he didnt like any music...he also liked torturing bugs in his house by pinning them to a wall and slow pulling off their legs and antennas.
I know a guy who doesn't like music. He used to be my childhood friend but we haven't kept in touch for a long time. He was really aggressive, almost strangled a kid in the 3rd grade and talks in a really weird and stereotypical way.
I mean there are so many genres of music that if you don't like a single one then you might need professional help.

My old roommate used to listen to nightcore. Extremely weird genre, the videos would always have anime girls too. I just think it ruins songs by speeding them up. If I was an artist, I'd be flattered if someone remixed my song (even if it was bad), because they liked it so much that they wanted to put some work in to give it their own feel. If someone just sped up my song and put it in a video with an anime girl I'd probably quit making music.

Love frisson, and its cousin ASMR. I use sleep headphones at night. Movie soundtracks are great for frisson, and audiobooks are a good source of ASMR, plus they're usually 30 or so hours long, so it'll run all night.

Or maybe they feel a strong emotional connection. For me I probably would've killed myself if I didn't find that music helps, for some people it's knowing that there is someone else who has similar views, experiences, etc. and is doing well.
I think it's mostly an aspie sort of thing. I mean, there's tons of good music out there, but if you're having some sort of stunning spiritual revelation because the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Radiohead made a good song, you probably don't have a great grasp on your emotions

Yeah, the survey was kind of weird because it asked me what I would do, not what I should do. One of the questions I could remember was "what would you do, buy equipment for a home gym or pay a monthly gym membership?" and I chose the gym membership because that's what I do. It's more social and I can get access to a basketball court and better equipment, which is worth more money for me.
I don't know why I'm getting into this, it was just weird like that. I agree that logic is more for financials though. You don't really have to be one or the other, everyone just kind of favors one side or the other.

Emotions are only developed in higher order animals with larger brains and people who are "special" have trouble self-regulating emotions and have two dimensional emotions. If anything, emotional intelligence is vastly important to human existence and success in life.

I actually read a study where they looked at people with brain damage in the emotion centers of the brain. They had tons of trouble even deciding what to eat. It shows that, while logic is important and they could tell you that 2 > 1, they couldn't decide whether they felt like having chicken or fish.
It's a really weird phenomenon, the more I learn about emotions, the more I'm fascinated by them. When you think about it, you can't describe a feeling or emotion the way you could describe something logically, which is pretty cool to me.

I actually read a study where they looked at people with brain damage in the emotion centers of the brain. They had tons of trouble even deciding what to eat. It shows that, while logic is important and they could tell you that 2 > 1, they couldn't decide whether they felt like having chicken or fish.
It's a really weird phenomenon, the more I learn about emotions, the more I'm fascinated by them. When you think about it, you can't describe a feeling or emotion the way you could describe something logically, which is pretty cool to me.

Even beyond emotional response in my opinion. For musicians and I'm sure even non-musicians, a piece of music can be written so well that it gives chills (song structure, phrasing, timbre, chord choice, etc.) So I feel like the person completely is missing the beauty of music emotionally and logically.

I think its connected to the central nervous system. Its like how women are more prone to tears because the tear system and the lactation system are connected.
Music stimulates the nervous system and illicits an emotional and physical response.
I get goose bumps and hair standing on end from music but I am extrodinarily sensitive in general, lots of mundane things trigger large reactions in me.
My husband isnt sensitive and never has these reactions to music although he enjoys it emmensely.

Aren't they different though? My understanding has always been that a weeaboo is someone who tries to act "Japanese" (or their perception of what a Japanese person is) because they're obsessed with some facet of the culture (usually anime.)
Whereas an otaku is someone who is obsessed with and dedicates an inordinate amount of time to something i.e. idol otaku, anime otaku, game otaku, etc. It doesn't specifically pertain to Japanese things, and it doesn't necessarily mean that they're trying to act or become Japanese.
Isn't hikikomori just the Japanese term for shut-ins or recluses. AFAIK, that doesn't have anything to do with anime, TCGs, or anything else specifically Japanese.

When I took first year Japanese at university our professor described otaku as basically that "creepy obsession of anything, like beyond the point of normal" in which there were quite a few people who sunk in there chairs. That class was full of people who only wanted to learn Japanese because of anime. Which you know what, that's fine. If anime is what motivates you that's cool find that motivation. These kids were priding themselves on being "otaku" and so I think the prof taking jabs like that hit them in the pride gland

'Otaku' is a Japanese term for someone with an unhealthy obsession with something, basically. It's not necessarily anything to do with anime, you can have idol otakus, train otakus etc, but it is necessarily derogatory.
"Weeaboo" originated in the west and was originally used in place of "Wapanese" to describe someone obsessed with Japanese culture to the point of delusion and cursing their own heritage. Again it's not inherently connected to anime, although it usually is in practice.
Both words have kind of become twisted over time as "weeaboo" has been applied to anyone who likes anime in an embarrassing way while some westerners have picked up on "otaku" as just meaning "someone who likes anime" and have started applying it to themselves bereft of its negative connotations (while people who do know what it means continue to regard it as an insult), but they were originally used for pretty different purposes.

They aren't exclusive terms, but an Otaku is obsessed with something so much that it disrupts their work ethic/social life/personality.
A Hikkikomori means a person that recluses themselves from society for a period of 6 months or longer.
Not all people who are hikkikomori are obsessed with something like an otaku, but being cut off from social interaction does provide an environment for obsessions to grow more extreme. It's a case by case situation.

Also just want to briefly chime in. While a lot of the more popular shows (e.g. Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, etc...) tend to be shallow and childish, as someone said earlier in this thread, "anime is a medium, not a genre." Even though the medium does have a lot of trash, there are plenty of great anime shows and movies that cater to more mature audiences (such as Psycho-Pass, Steins;Gate, Clannad: After Story, Perfect Blue, Ghost in the Shell, etc...). I can understand not being interested in the medium, but as a whole it's pretty decent and probably on par with a lot of western media.

Well, think of people who are born deaf. They not be able to enjoy music in the same way we can, and they (probably) won't care for it as much as we do, but that doesn't leave a void in their soul. There are so many other art forms that are just as fulfilling as music, from poetry, literature, cinema, videos games, etc to things like interpretive dance or maybe even sculpture.
Music is rad, sure, but you shouldn't take pity on people who aren't into it. Kind of a dick move. It's like when people give me shit about not liking football. It's the entire world to some people, but I certainly wouldn't say I'm missing anything by not even thinking about for weeks at a time.

Not since elementary school when they tested me with all sorts of specialists and all they got was I've got some form of tinnitus. It doesn't bother me much.
Also, I have a lot of trouble telling people apart beyond size and hair/skin color. It's probably a pattern recognition thing rather than specifically hearing problem.

nah bro, its like food. Really healthy food I may add. Attenuate your nervous system responses if you're so concerned about constant stimulation. Go run a mile everyday and when you shower switch the water to cold before you finish. Be aware of your heart area while giving appropriate amounts of focus to the center of your brain, or wherever you feel you really "hear" the music. For me at least, this is where I can synthesize the best feelings from music.
C'mon, at least try it out, music is one of the happiest, most productive things that humans have ever managed to tap into. It's a worthwhile endeavor, I promise you.

I am a musician, so it would be safe to say I'm really really into it! What I meant by trying it out tho was practicing listening to it. The enjoyment of music isn't a passive act if one desires make it more than background noise. the ear is evolved to prioritize the frequencies in human speech. For obvious reasons, the ability to understand human speech is one of the last things to go. You can loose the ability to hear lower and higher frequencies useful for distinguishing musical tones and still be able make our peoples speech.
If you've either gone deaf over a long period of time, or were born with bad hearing you might not know the difference.

I can respect that. I've never been into Dylan but I need to try again. I mostly listen to rap or EDM but I used to be huge into classic and alt rock. I still am to a certain extent, but I'd rather hear a new Flume or ODESZA album than Tame Impala or Radiohead, for example.

I think his 60's stuff, for as good as it is, is overrated.
If i were to start someone on him, i think I'd go with a couple different songs to get a feel for him:
Isis, Hurricane, Tangled up in Blue, Tough Mama, When the Ship comes in, Ring Them Bells, Meet Me in the Morning, Dark Eyes, Duquesne Whistle, Thunder on the Mountain, Lovesick, Someday baby, Seรฑor (tales of Yankee Power), You ain't goin' nowhere, Lay Lady Lay AND (finally) The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar.
If you listen to all those, you'll have a REALLY good feel for his stuff. Just a warning tho: if you get into him, and check out his 80's stuff, for whatever reason, he kept a lot of his best work off his albums, including what many believe to be his best song ever: Blind Willie McTell (it's top 5 for me)

Basically, he's like The Beatles of rap. Whether you like him or hate him, he's probably the most influential artist in rap history. Everyone is influenced by Kanye, he ended gangsta rap's popularity, popularized EDM in America, popularized a lot of different sounds, discovered a bunch of artists, made it "cool" to sing and show emotion in rap, etc.
Personally, what makes him my favorite artist is that he raps a lot about himself and what's going on in his mind. I've found that I, as a sometimes hot headed and outspoken person who says the wrong things sometimes to people I care about, can relate to Kanye's personality a lot. He has an "artistic vision" for all of his albums, they all have a distinct sound and themes prevalent in the whole project; the only other rapper I've seen pull that off as well is Kendrick Lamar.
The constant contradiction of an extremely narcissistic and self confident person who is riddled with self-doubt and insecurities is fascinating too. If you don't like rap and don't ever see yourself liking it, I don't think Kanye would change your mind. If you have an open mind to the genre, listen to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy straight through and listen for the themes and how the album has "Acts", like a play.

I just find him completely unable to relate to. Aside from not really liking anything of his I've heard, in any interview I've seen with him, he seems like a completely narcissistic asshole who can't finish a thought or sentence. He's very boastful and seems to feel like he deserves to be idolized. I'm more into the underground music scene and that's given me a lot of opportunity to meet various rappers that I would say are very well known (Watsky, CES Cru, and Kung Fu Vampire being some of the most memorable) and they were all so humble and just happy to be there. Like they never expected grandeur and now that they've made it to that point all they want to do is show their fans how much they appreciate them, and I feel like Kanye doesn't have that same appreciation for fans.

As a music educator, I come across students who feel absolutely no connection to music at all! However, I have learned most people will eventually enjoy music once they start making it themselves. When you are playing an instrument or singing, your brain is being activated in many areas so it's hard not feel something....even if it's a feeling of disgust.

My old roommate used to listen to nightcore. Extremely weird genre, the videos would always have anime girls too. I just think it ruins songs by speeding them up. If I was an artist, I'd be flattered if someone remixed my song (even if it was bad), because they liked it so much that they wanted to put some work in to give it their own feel. If someone just sped up my song and put it in a video with an anime girl I'd probably quit making music.

Love frisson, and its cousin ASMR. I use sleep headphones at night. Movie soundtracks are great for frisson, and audiobooks are a good source of ASMR, plus they're usually 30 or so hours long, so it'll run all night.
