Telemarketer figures out Lenny is a recording, then a car crashes into the telemarketer's office!!

This call was a wild ride from start to finish. Around the 8 minute mark is where things start to get good. Michael figures out that Lenny is playing some sort of joke but doesn't quite realize what. Then shortly after 9 minutes, he figures out - much to his apparent delight - Lenny is a recording. But that's not the best part. Around the 9:46 mark, *a car runs into the telemarketer's office building*. You can actually hear the crash on the recording. Michael is unperturbed by this and continues to talk to Lenny, chuckling with glee to himself when Lenny speaks. Around 10:50, a minute and four seconds after the crash, what sounds like a fire truck horn triggers Lenny's speech detection. In the background, we can hear other telemarketers continuing their calls as if nothing happened. That's hard core.

8:05 "Well, I guess we gon' be here a while!"

Plot Twist: Lenny, a self-driving AI being developed by a large company (who shall remain nameless), made a huge leap forward by learning another human trait. Driving distracted while on the phone.

It is unclear if damages can be claimed by the telemarketer since Lenny was on a do-not-call list and the call, made by the telemarketer, was illegal.

As somebody who used to work in a call center I can confirm the not give a fuck attitude when something happens like that. There was at least four fights that broke out on the call center floor within one year and everybody stayed in their seats like nothing was happening.

idlephase ยท 45 points ยท Posted at 05:48:11 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Are there a lot of egos on the floor in telemarketing?

Mirai182 ยท 131 points ยท Posted at 05:55:00 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Not necessarily. It's just the one I used to work at was really ghetto so it was a lot of black chicks who were usually fighting. I remember we had a time when the fire alarm went off and we all saw that it was a false alarm because we saw who did it and they told us just to remain where we were and we continued to talk to customers. Customers were asking what was going on and we nonchalantly told them someone pulled the fire alarm. The company that I worked for regretted that because they got hella fined when the fire department showed up and saw that the building was not evacuated.

I worked at a time Share call center. Trying to sell those free vacations people think they are signing up for at car shows. One of the managers was dancing on top of our desks. They were all lined up next to each other and back to back. She was trying to make us talk louder. I know she was high on coke, possibly other things. People on the phone was like wtf is that? I said I don't even know. Was a shitty job, I didn't stay long.

[deleted] ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 12:16:01 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

What is it with call centers treating people like shit?

I worked at one that tried to fire me for getting married, when I had the time put in and approved 6 months in advance.

blolfighter ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 15:02:19 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Nobody wants that job. This means they can treat employees like shit, because if anyone had an alternative they wouldn't be working there anyway.

Esscocia ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 17:25:44 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I work in a call centre for a big energy company that pays really good money and treats their employees better than they really should be treated.

Not all call centres are shit holes.

KerberoZ ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 18:35:47 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Same for me, i'm doing technical support for a big software company, supervisors + colleagues are awesome. Only inbound though, i could never do telemarketing/hardselling.

blolfighter ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 19:48:22 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Can I ask what, more specifically, you do? Do you have specialised training or education? Are acquired skills very important? Do you spend more time taking calls, or more time making them?

Esscocia ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:54:32 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I work on the lowest end of the scale. I am or was inbound customer services, but now work in sales, same amount of money but a much more relaxing and rewarding environment.

No skills or qualifications required, but it is the go to job for unskilled work in my area so its quite competative. Mostly because they pay nearly ยฃ10 an hour from the get go with pay increases every year and real opportunites to move up the ranks if you desire.

Depends on the call center. If the aim is not to sell/upgrade or handle billing issues, then yeah, it can be great. My company had a really easy and streamline billing resolution process, so there was less headaches for call center folks.

Mirai182 ยท 28 points ยท Posted at 08:05:36 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Some places pay by the hour. Some places pay commission only. Working in a call center, you can get excited by a lot of things. I know I would get excited when I would find a customer who had something in common with me and I would chat with them as long as I could.

llxGRIMxll ยท 30 points ยท Posted at 08:57:57 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I usually ask if they're paid by the hour, some say they can't say, others can say and others give round about answers. Usually with the ones who are paid by the hour, I'll bullshit with them. Usually about whatever while I pretend I may be interested incase someone is listening in or whatever. Though scammers are different. I usually fuck with them. Try to sell them something or talk about something random I know they don't want to talk about. I've been cussed out, threatened etc all while never raising my voice or saying anything violent or negative etc. It's quite funny.

One guy who Called apparently worked for the world's worst scammers. Honestly, I think he was a thief trying to scope out locations. Some of the things he was asking led me to believe that. You could also hear home noises in the background. Had their legit number pop up and after he went nuts on me I kept calling him back. At least once or twice a day. Sometimes his girlfriend or wife would answer then hang up quickly. Eventually they got their number changed and probably set it up to not show their number this time. I loved messing with them. I also got in touch with the police who said they'd look into it but didn't seem too worried tbh.

I had a guy call from Florida, I'm in Kansas. He was really rude and obviously scamming people. The first time he didn't hang up on me completely so I muted the phone and waited. He talked to someone for a moment and then the next call started. I listened to it ring and then an old woman picked up the phone. He gave his pitch and she starts asking serious questions. I unmuted my mic and told her she was being scammed and she should hang up the phone. The guy starts screaming, old woman gets confused, she hangs up the phone, he dumps me from the line.

I decided to callback and it went straight to him. First he called me pretty horrid names and told me he was going to rape me. Then after about a week he must have gotten bored with the tactic and decided to get a new number.

rhllor ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 11:19:00 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Heh I've trolled quite a few scammers. I'd talk to them and get them to explain everything, sometimes more than once, and ask dumb questions. When I get bored, I'd spring up something sexually outrageous. One of my favorites is "did you know your dad stops by the men's restroom at the park everyday after work and swallows at least a dozen loads before going home?"

Either your timestamps are wrong or Im hearing it differently. Around 9:46, you already hear people saying a car crashed into the building. The thunk you hear is probably the telemarketer taking off his headset and putting it down. Then you hear a bunch of background chatter. Also at 10:50, you hear a horn for sure, but it doesn't trigger Lenny at all...

xAIRGUITARISTx ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 15:36:00 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah, that thump is not the car. Immediately following it you hear someone say "a car ran into it". That's way too fast of a reaction time for the thump to be the car.

BowlOfDix ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 18:42:17 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Who is worse the telemarketer or the door to door salesman? I've tried both and I hated both. At least with telemarketing I can sit down though. I think the door to door guy is the worse because it is harder to hang up on him (but I have an intercom so I never have to see him)

I think this is awful, people who think this shit is funny need to work a job like this for a while.

Getting telemarketing calls sucks, it's a disgusting industry. But the person who makes those calls isn't some hateful asshole who delights in bothering you at dinner and talking your grandma into signing up for shit, they're just a person with a job like anybody else.

The only reason this seems funny is because it's over the phone. Imagine is this was in-person, what if you hassled a waitress or a store clerk like this? Deliberately wasting their time - you do realize they get fired for shit like this, right? Your little prank might be putting someone on the street, I hope you don't think that's funny too.

.

People who don't work - who don't have to work to support themselves or a family - don't appreciate other people's jobs.

They don't appreciate work as a means to an end, and not some kind of lifelong aspiration that they're passionate and enthusiastic about. Sometimes it's just work, it's just a job.

I don't want people hassling me at my work, so I don't hassle others at theirs. Get a job, and get off my lawn.

.

EDIT: Oh I see your downvotes, You're all idealistic kids from high school and college, thinking everybody gets a cushy job in an office or a lab somewhere and everybody else deserves what they get.

Let me drink deep of your hatred for I do not care

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Mango123456 ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 15:04:52 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Thanks for your candor.

Whether they delight in signing my grandmother up for stuff she doesn't understand, or convincing me my computer has a virus, or not, it doesn't matter. Lenny has taken calls ranging from legal-but-annoying to unethical to completely illegal. I realize these people are getting paid and doing a job, but (some of them are) doing things that are illegal. If Lenny has kept even one of these telemarketers from scamming an actual elderly person, I consider this effort a job well done.

I would never troll a waitress or store clerk in this fashion, or at all. They are not doing anything wrong. I do occasionally mess with people who come to my house and for example try to scam me into signing a contract for energy services at high rates, or ask me to donate to a charity they can't tell me any details about. If they seem legit, I thank them for their time and politely tell them I'm not interested.

If telemarketers don't want Lenny to troll them, they are welcome to stop calling. They are calling us, not the other way around.

guydawg ยท 23 points ยท Posted at 14:49:23 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

How is it hassling people at work if they call you?

Also "they're just doing their job" is stupid. If my job was to shit in your lunch box does that make it ok? Oh because I was being compensated for my time that makes it cool?

And yeah voluntarily showing up to a restaurant to harass a waitress is totally the same I agree

FullofContradictions ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:42:39 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah... The biggest difference between hassling a telemarketer and a waitress is that the waitress didn't show up in your living room at 8:30 pm trying to guilt you into listening to their canned speech about whatever scam they're trying to pull.

It sucks that telemarketing is the only thing some people can find, but don't be surprised that nobody is happy your job exists. Just keep taking your paycheck and hate your job like everyone else.

guydawg ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:28:14 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Pretty much. If that's what you need to do to put food on the table then go for it but realize that your job is to annoy the fuck out of people. If a telemarketer called with an actual compelling offer then that would be different but it's typically some fly by night shit or magazine subscription

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Mango123456 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:08:33 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

If my job was to shit in your lunch box does that make it ok?

I realize this is a pretty wild hypothetical extreme, but - yeah, maybe.

I'd hate the company that employs someone to even do that, but not the person doing it. If that really is their job, then I'd respect their responsibilities.

guydawg ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 15:13:33 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The_Juggler17 ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 18:02:37 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

They're committing a serious crime - that's different.

However, even in the case of hitmen, I will say that I can respect that they're using their talents to provide for themselves and/or their family. Everybody has an obligation to support themselves, and this is the way they've found to do this.

This is a good example though - I don't respect the telemarketer for working in a toxic industry, but I do respect their need to make a living; I don't respect the hitman for murdering people, but I do respect their need to make a living.

High school kids think they're very intellectual, much smarter than the rest of the world, and have simple answers to complicated problems.

College kids tend to be very optimistic, they're focused on a big career that is their lifelong aspiration and can't imagine why anybody would do a job that isn't so glamorous.

I appreciate they are trying to work for a living but their job is literally scamming feeble minded people. I know it's a shit job and the employees probably hate it but that's no excuse for doing something that equates to stealing from people.

We aren't even talking about doing anything bad to these people other then wasting their time for a few minutes, until they realize they are talking to a recording. You think that's awful?

cookies4all ยท 12 points ยท Posted at 09:35:47 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Seems like it's smarter than that. I think the sound is fed into a computer that determines when the telemarketer is speaking and when he stops.

bananaskates ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 09:52:34 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

There's possibly also some advanced pattern recognition going on, as Lenny determines if it sounds like the marketer is asking a question and tailors his response.

Oh Sir!

Give those guys more credit! Just cause they are under 21 does not mean they are children. Perhaps just young adults trying to make their way in the world?

Since you seem confused the red "thing" in the video is called a phone. It is a device meant to allow real time communication between two or more individuals in different locations. It was invented by Alexander Graham Bell and other contributors on March 10th 1876. When it was first invented it looked quite different from the phone in the video. In fact one of the first looked very much like this.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f4/Actor_portraying_Alexander_Graham_Bell_in_an_AT%26T_promotional_film_(1926).jpg

Since then the telephone has become a rather common aspect of society. Many modern variants are called Smart Phones and look very much like this.

http://www.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2014/03/topic_iphone_5.png?itok=EHmSheG0

While these smart phones include the capabilities of the very first phone they can also do much much more.

In the future if you need more information I've heard of this nifty new thing called the "Interweb" that has all kinds of information on nearly anything you want!
