Has anybody else noticed that this is a manipulated image? They tried to paint a reflection of the golden gate bridge onto the car, but it just doesn't look real.
Not to mention, real gigapixel photos are taken using many photos and then combining them - you can't capture a moving car this way and none have the detail required to make out a stitching on a car's passenger seat.

First of all, I'd like to thank mom and dad and the academy, etc. pp. Guess pointing out the obvious is a good way to earn some sweet karma around here, unlike for example writing something long and worthwhile, at least in my experience. I'd like to mention that number three and number ten on the list took much more time and effort, not to mention the time I was insane enough to scan and translate a long magazine article. It's not the fault of the software. The car was moving while the various images making up this panorama were taken and it was just not there when one of the images was taken.
Its the roof of the Macmillan Cancer research building. I found a picture if it and the blacked out area is on the right side of this image. Its just a wall. Maybe nothing is hidden and it's just a screw up in the picture.

The thing that fucks me up about pictures like this is knowing that this amount of information exists in the light hitting our eyes, we just don't have the hardware to focus it.

Maybe if we both combine our karma together, we could go in to Bentley, order a Bentley and then.. proceed to get kicked out because fuck them. Our karma is worth more than their cars anyway..
I was in the market for a Mitsubishi Mirage, one of the new 3 cylinder ones with a manual transmission because it's cheaper but now I guess I'm leaning more towards a new Bentley Continental for some reason.
They're both British Luxury Brands so have similar pedigrees, although most say Bentleys are cars to drive and Rolls are to be driven in. Rolls Royce have more rectangular headlamps and shorter grilles.
This is pretty obvious Bentley marketing. I'm kind of annoyed actually. I thought it would zoom in in the driver's eyes or something. Nope. Just an in-your-face Bentley logo. Fascinating.
To be fair I see a lot of those in my area. It was a trendy thing to do a few years ago and I think they just got left. Now you could argue that California has front plates so it doesn't matter but then someone else could argue not all states do and this is clearly a tourist
It is also misaligned. Consider the angle the car is pointing. Fully zoomed in, the logo shouldn't be nearly squared up with the frame of the gif, but it is, as if the picture is being taken from the front of the car.

Clearly some "native advertising" by Bentley. 1000 upvotes costs about $500 so they probably spent $1200 on this ad that got seen by approximately 25k-50k people. Cheap advertising, any company not doing it is dumb, especially because people think it's organic. But stuff of this low quality is so transparent

No, much worse. They simply put out a press release and all sorts of sites just copied the text more or less without checking the veracity of the information. Just google "Bentley gigapixel" and you'll see what I mean.
I was wondering how on earth they would have managed to capture enough light to get a clear image inside the car from that range. I was already starting the back if the envelope calculation to see how big the telescope would need to be in order to collect enough light and have that large of a field of view.
Then I realized that if the light gathering capacity to get that image was reflected onto any image sensor I can think of it would just burn it out.
Then I realized that even if it didn't burn out the background would have been completely blown out, much like why there are no stars in the Apollo mission photos.

The shutter speed to capture the logo with zero motion blur would have to be something like 1/24000. That's a hell of a fast lens.
Edit: napkin calculation -- if he were going ~30 meters/sec, and the focal length captured half the car in the entire frame, or ~2 meters, then that part of the car would move across the entire frame in 1/15th of a second. Sanity check is ok so far.
Say the frame is 5000 pixels wide. That means: photographing the car before it moves across more than 1 pixel would require a shutter speed of 1/75000th of a second (13 microseconds!), though 1/20000th of a second would still give an acceptable sharpness.
This is exactly what it is. Surprised I had to scroll this far to see this comment.
It's not a photograph of real-life, it's a computer generated image that essentially renders as you 'zoom in'. It's cool as a computer graphics concept, but not in the way a real photo would be cool. OP's title is misleading.

It wasn't a good comment, it was just a trivial little thing that only got this many upvotes, because it was the first comment pointing something out. Barely any better than writing "First!". I know my edits are cringeworthy, I cringed myself while writing them. Didn't stop me however. Most likely. I've measured the distance between the camera and the car at about 435m using Google Earth and good ol' Pythagoras. Someone cleverer than I can possibly calculate how good a hypothetical telephoto lens needed to be for this amount of detail.
Uh that's not a reflection, it's a two tone paint job. It highlights a design Bentley is famous for. The actual reflection on the side of the car is exactly what you'd expect a reflection on a car would look line.
It was very apparent. I can't believe anyone would feel this was an actual photo of a moving car on the Golden Gate.

Just to left of the Stanley Cup in the crowd (from left, roughly 1/6 across, halfway vertically in picture, in the street), you can see a nice artifact from the picture splicing (you'll know it when you see it...). I'm sure there's plenty more, just don't have time to search right now, and that was first I saw.

It absolutely doesn't and unlike in the past, Bentleys aren't modified Rolls-Royce anymore, since Bentley belongs to VW and Rolls-Royce to BMW these days.

Absolutely not. Bentley grills have been divided in the center at slightly angled for many years now, whereas Rolls-Roye grills are still entirely upright and without any angles.
I remember learning in physics that a single photo like this would not be possible due to a behaviour of light. I forgot the name of the phenomenon, but at a certain distance it was physically impossible to distinguish two dots. They started to sort merge with each other.
So, I speculate (but may be wrong) that every super high res photo like this would have to be made of many optically zoomed images.

You could never take a picture of a moving car at this resolution and have it not be blurred somewhat making it impossible to see this kind of detail. I could believe it if it was a couple second exposure but no way a moving car, in the daylight without it being overexposed since you'd have to let all the light in to capture this.
Also why does the water look shittier and shittier while the car gets clearer and clearer? Because it's a bullshit composite image.

I'm looking for a high res photo of a field and maybe a barn taken with a homemade digital camera. The camera used a flatbed scanner as a component. It is very detailed like some of the images posted here. Does anyone have a lead?

It is also misaligned. Consider the angle the car is pointing. Fully zoomed in, the logo shouldn't be nearly squared up with the frame of the gif, but it is, as if the picture is being taken from the front of the car.

Clearly some "native advertising" by Bentley. 1000 upvotes costs about $500 so they probably spent $1200 on this ad that got seen by approximately 25k-50k people. I was wondering how on earth they would have managed to capture enough light to get a clear image inside the car from that range. I was already starting the back if the envelope calculation to see how big the telescope would need to be in order to collect enough light and have that large of a field of view.
Then I realized that if the light gathering capacity to get that image was reflected onto any image sensor I can think of it would just burn it out.
Then I realized that even if it didn't burn out the background would have been completely blown out, much like why there are no stars in the Apollo mission photos.

The shutter speed to capture the logo with zero motion blur would have to be something like 1/24000. That's a hell of a fast lens.
Edit: napkin calculation -- if he were going ~30 meters/sec, and the focal length captured half the car in the entire frame, or ~2 meters, then that part of the car would move across the entire frame in 1/15th of a second. Sanity check is ok so far.
Say the frame is 5000 pixels wide. That means: photographing the car before it moves across more than 1 pixel would require a shutter speed of 1/75000th of a second (13 microseconds!), though 1/20000th of a second would still give an acceptable sharpness.

I remember learning in physics that a single photo like this would not be possible due to a behaviour of light. I forgot the name of the phenomenon, but at a certain distance it was physically impossible to distinguish two dots. They started to sort merge with each other. So, I speculate (but may be wrong) that every super high res photo like this would have to be made of many optically zoomed images.

You could never take a picture of a moving car at this resolution and have it not be blurred somewhat making it impossible to see this kind of detail. I could believe it if it was a couple second exposure but no way a moving car, in the daylight without it being overexposed since you'd have to let all the light in to capture this.
