[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:00:35 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Imagine making a small train model terrain and then lying down and looking at it with your eyes right next to the "mountains". That's a bit what it would look like.
There are all kinds of catches to this, and you would likely start feeling a bit seasick after a while because your eyes would still try to focus on the screen, which is very close, while your brain would try to insist that the clouds are far away.
The only true way to generate a decent 3D image is something akin to a hologram, and they are hard to make with decent contrast.
You need three panoramas because for example you have a piece of paper. You draw two points in the center about two inches apart. Now if you plot a point, any point on the paper, it will have an angle in respect to each central point you plotted.
This diagram here has a dot with about 45ยฐ of separation between the two dots.
http://imgur.com/JCkolpK
But now let's say you have a dot in line with the two panoramic shots.
In this diagram there is a dot with (for arguments sake, I'm on mobile..) 0ยฐ of separation between the two dots.
http://imgur.com/5W6RKB1
So with 0ยฐ, or for things close to the line created by the two cameras, there isn't much angle data. Sure there is size but it's very hard to pick up size by eye (especially for panoramas where the closest thing could be half a mile away) , and it wouldn't work very well if we took both cameras' images and made a stereographic image of that parallel spot because that's not how the human eye's are set up to work.
It would be like making a 3d photo of a sculpture by taking one picture a meter away, and then a step back instead of a step to the side. There's just not enough angle data to see a 3D image.
Anything that is in line with two cameras can have an image created with the third camera, as seen in the above where the blue dot is in line with 2&3 (creating an angle of 0ยฐ) but 1 can be used to create a stereographic image instead of 2.
With more cameras you can have more appropriately distanced images so that your eyes can adjust easier/better.
Imagine this is a piece of a panorama. Turn these two images into a 3d image that our eyes can understand. Im not talking about 3d images made from shots to the left or to the right of this lamp, I'm talking about problems with making 3d images directly in line with the shots.
Edit: and don't tell me about wobble stereoscopy. I mean the kind of 3d that tv's, movie theaters, 3ds, and oculus use.
Our eyes perceive two images, side by side, one for each eye. Our brain handles problems with there being insufficient depth information just the same. If is not one mono channel, and the analogy falls.
Im not sure what you're trying to say. That's been my argument this whole time. If it's a 0ยฐ separation it's too little for the brain to make it a 3d image.

Are you sure? Triangulation is used when you can measure the distance to a point, but photographs don't measure distance- they show the direction of points. It seems like, if you can find the direction of a point, you only need two measurements to locate it.
Nope, 2 Kameras are enough for 3D Mapping - all the technical equipment uses Stereo Kameras. Triangulation does not come from using three cameras, but from forming a triangle between two observers and an observed point.
The ELI5 why this works: If you have a 2D image and mark a certain point on it, you in reality mark a 1D ray of depth on it - the missing information. using a second image, you can project a differently angeled 1D ray - where they meet is the sought depth coordinate.
I can post images if requested - my english is probably not sufficent to really explain it well.
Replying to your edit:
I am sorry, but your paper metaphor is incorrect.
in your example images you plot the point of the observer ON the image plane, which is not the case, the camera center is a focus length away from the image plane. the edge case that you drew can never occur if the camera images are taken close to parallel in perspective.
Take camera A and B, put them 20 m apart, let the shoot not QUITE in parallel, but angled slightly towards each other (the edge case parallel planes is harder to explain).
Draw a mental line between the camera centers. This is called the base line line.
let each camera take a picture. the picture is placed in front of the camera center according to the camera geometry (focal length, resolution, chip sensor width and height etc).
Identify Feature X on both cameras. Note that feature X is shifted on image of Camera B vs image of camera A due to parallax effect.
starting from the Center of camera A, plot a vector trough the Position of feature X.
Do so with Camera B.
both vectors converge in 3D space and the position is triangulated.
This is true for ALL points of the image execept a very few points on the very far left and right, which were not taken by both cameras.
They have a small dev team. I think character development comes later. It has been a blue ragdoll since the beginning.
It doesn't take away from the experience though. Awesome game with a steep learning curve. Controller required.
Edit: One note. They are still in early development, and changed to the aerodynamics may change. They have had a few changes, but have stabilized now. Keep a backup of the version you like the most, just in case.
I laughed, but just in case you're being serious, snow leopards only live in the Himalayas, while Mont Blanc, the location this image appears to have been taken in (see the ski-lift looking thing), is in the Alps.
Edit: Snow leopards actually live in other mountainous regions near the Himalayas as well, but still nowhere near the Alps.
I'm on mobile so I can't really investigate... Does anyone know how big this image is? And assuming it's jpg or something, how big a bitmap/raw of this size would be?

I recently had a stab at this for our biohacker lab's crowdfunding video. It has both a zoom out to space and zoom in from space sequence that goes microscopic :) I put it together using entirely public domain video and stills from NASA and USGS + other creative commons clips found around the web.
So, for the gifs of videos, wtf kind of camera is capable of that?
Edit: the still photo ones aren't nearly as impressive to me. Not to take away from them, but if it's a video that means the whole thing us done in real time.

The photos are gigapans. They assemble pictures like giant panoramas.
If you're a full frame DSLR user, you could use a 600mm lens and a 2x teleconverter which will get you 1200mm. If you're on a crop body DSLR and using that same set up, you'll have a focal length of around 1920mm. For reference, the iPhone has a focal length of around 35mm (please correct me if I'm wrong).
damontoo ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 06:21:52 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
For those wondering this is shot with a Nikon Coolpix P900. It's a "bridge" camera with built-in 83x (2000mm) telephoto lens. It's $600 but a similar zoom range lens for a DSLR would cost tens of thousands of dollars. There's downsides to this camera as well though (e.g. it doesn't shoot in RAW).
photenth ยท 20 points ยท Posted at 09:05:29 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
The downside is not just that it doesn't shoot in raw but that the lens image quality is not that of an expensive DSLR lens. It's not bad but if you want to print big or are doing product studio shots you need sharp images down to the pixels. Additionally most higher end tele lenses are very fast and can collect a lot of light thus you can do very short shutter speeds and capture birds in flight or other fast moving objects even in the evening sun And that's what you pay for.
One of my throw away shots otherwise I wouldn't upload a full resolution image Sharp from head to "toe", some noise issues in the feathers but that you have to expect since with a sharp lens like this you encounter moire effects which introduce discolourations. And of course JPG artifacts since this was exported at 60% quality and it's still 5 MB. Not a good shot but that's literally what you pay for and not just to be "old school" =)
Gosh, that image is fantastic. It's unbelievable, really.
photenth ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:36:54 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
That's all the camera. If I gave you the camera with the settings already set you can take this picture =) Birds in flight is where it's at =) Still working on that one =)
The other downside is sensor size. To make a 83x zoom lens that size, the sensor has to be tiny, and tiny sensor equals tiniy pixels which equals less light per pixel. He says it's a 2000mm lens, but of course it isn't. You'd need a 2000mm lens to shoot that in a dslr (maybe, I didn't verify that), but with this sensor size, you only need a 350mm lens (that's also narrower) to make that shot.
photenth ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:35:04 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Additionally the lenses are smaller for smaller sized sensors thus mistakes and imperfections are more noticeable. Also smaller pixels also capture less light, that's why most cell phones and cheaper cameras have bad high ISO performance.
But technology is getting better, I'd say another 10 years and DSLRs might be a thing of the past or at least just old school like film cameras =)

Yeah I'm getting mine at the beginning of next month. I'm really torn between the P900 and the Canon SX60. The SX60 does shoot in raw and has superior IQ in the pictures I've seen, but... 2000mm...
I'm more of a birder than than a photographer so the absence of RAW was not a big deal to me. I want affordable portability and reach. P900 is exactly that.
Well are you more likely to want to take photos from far off or have more control over editing your photos? Whichever you'd find more useful (and not just fun for the first few goes) is presumably the one you should go for.
All these people posting video zooms are really missing the point as to why a wide landscape photo with this clarity is absolutely incredible and unprecedented. A zoom lens gif is not unique or interesting or remotely in the ballpark of the significance of OP's post.
Well, it is still impressive that they did it. That was a lot of fucking pictures to take. But yes, for a purely technical standpoint, it is not that impressive.
At 32bpp, that's 11.6TB of RAM, so I the triumph is in the size of the computer used to render it to a display and then hold it in memory for post processing? And also in the clever software to spread out this work across a parallel compute cluster.
Yep, or you can just randomly snap pictures and have the software stitch it all together. Better to do it the way you suggest, but that is the easy way.
photenth ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:12:42 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Of course, and since it's a low MP camera they used, just stock up on a 50MP dslr or even a 100MP medium frame camera. But then you have to mortgage your house ;p
"Hey man, check this out! I went on all these crazy cold mountain ranges and took around 70,000 pictures. Then I sat down and stitched them all together to make this giant panorama and it's got like the highest resolution of any composite that's ever been made."
Not even slightly an expert, but I reckon that's probably optically impossible, regardless of technological advancement. Unless you had a lens the size of the moon or some shit.
If you were in a room with 100 naked women, using an optical zoom lens would be like choosing one woman. A wide lens with the kind of quality in the photo would be like being able to fuck all one hundred women.
Huh? Did anyone say anything that makes you feel that they "aren't getting it"? What's your point? People need to enjoy things for the same reason you enjoy them? I don't get it.

I know this is light years away from the resolution that we would need to see the moon landing, but Im curious if you know how much more powerful of a camera we would need to see the landing site of the moon?
Yes, there are robotic methods of capturing the images, remapping the flat images to a spherical projection, blending the transitions between images, remapping to the final desired projection, rendering a final full image, and then rendering lower-resolution tiles for a Google Maps style user interface.
It's actually really cool how they do this. Using a really insanely sturdy tripod they use a tripod head that automatically moves the camera in the increments it needs to create the large image. A common one is called the GigaPan, and you track the top left corner and bottom right of what you want the image to be and it'll calculate everything it needs off of what focal length your lens is at. Suuuuuper cool technology that has some pretty sweet uses.
I watched an interview where a guy went to a bunch of baseball stadiums and took photos for MLB that can be seen here http://mlb.mlb.com/photos/gigapan/
I wasn't judging your comment. Just putting the price here for the lazy. I think it's a decent price for the technology involved and being able to put your own camera in it is actually a benefit.
That would be my guess. It's pretty easy to stitch the photos together. My guess a camera with telephoto lens took a shit load of pictures from a single spot and all the pictures were oriented and stitches together. At least that's how previous "largest picture ever" pics have worked. It's the largest picture, not the largest photo.
Fast computers cost $. 128gb ram min, 16 core etc, 2-8 tb ssd etc. You get what you pay for generally.
Even gaming computers arent really up to stitching large gigapixels for events that require 24 hour turn around times.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:13:49 on March 7, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
What program you use? Some allow CUDA enabled GPUs to assist in the processing although you'd think 16gb RAM would be enough. Obviously something like this is gonna need a big computer, it's the largest in the world.
sufunew ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 07:24:19 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
you do tricks so you don't have to hold the whole thing in RAM at once, too.

The Terapixel mentioned in the article linked is the default 'background' image in WorldWideTelescope - online version here, just zoom in, though it's not the most interesting image.
It's probably obvious but I feel like I should also point out that higher-resolution images exist for smaller areas - for instance the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, which is here (if it doesn't show up, select it from the panel at the bottom of the screen).
I watched the whole thing the first time expecting to see dick butt at any moment. I'm scarred, Reddit.
[deleted] ยท 26 points ยท Posted at 05:11:34 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Very cool but I have to ask, if you're going to take the highest resolution picture ever taken, why choose a landscape that is 99% snow, rock and sky as your subject matter?
I also agree with this sentiment-- when making a large panorama, it's easy to forget the fundamentals of image composition, and for much of the frame to be too boring to zoom in and explore.

If you're talking about pixels, no. If you're talking about the overall size of the thing being imaged, the best you can do is a fisheye view of the entire sky to capture roughly half of the observable universe, though it wouldn't be very good.
That said, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope being built in Chile will have a 3.2 gigapixel camera meant for surveying very wide swaths of the sky. See http://www.lsst.org/

I couldn't (immediately) find the specific resolution of the XDR, but it's only a portion of the previous Ultra-Deep Field, which itself is about 38 megapixels. While the angular resolution of the Deep Field images is extremely high (i.e. the 'distance' between the pixels), it covers an absolutely miniscule section of the sky.
I'm not even trying to figure out the magnitudes properly, but... it's like if the original panorama only showed the face of one of the skiers, but you could see his pores.
38Super ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:27:12 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Some to look at at gigapan.com. Just for a "simple" gigapixel image it takes 12 hours to stitch the 100 odd source images together. I'm currently building a fast pan tilt remote controlled head to do this before the lighting changes.
Not true. It's not a single picture, it's a composition of over 70.000 pictures. So is Google Street View, or Satellite view, and both are larger than this picture. Still interesting as fuck though .
There aren't many things that make me say "holy fucking shit" in amazement these days, but this is one of them.
Two most comparable moments in my mind were seeing the quality of the iPod 5's screen after looking at GameBoys for over a decade (they were the only comparable screen to me, but it blew the GBA's resolution out of the water) and being able to pinch and zoom on a picture on the original iPhone.
So how long until we can take a photo like that on our phones?

I always thought it was bullshit on movies and shows when the government magically enhanced a blurry potato-photo and turned it into high quality 4K resolution images but I guess I can eat shit now, huh?
Stitching multiple images together in an interface is not the same.
Now, if this was an interface that controls a REAL camera and it's focus [and the rest of the fancy camera shit] without the user being able to tell and stitches THAT live? sure. No different.. but live so it has some sort of coolness. But this entire gif is premeditated
But when it's just an interface of many different pictures stitched together non-live in a google-maps style thing then nah.

Yeah I spent at least 10-20 mins looking around on there. It is very bad ass. It is crazy how far off you can zoom into too and still get pretty damn clear pictures, considering how far away they are.
What makes this way cooler than any other big picture is that most others are taken in the city, through a window of some office where the equipment is safe and everything is pleasant. This one is taken outside, god knows where. There are other people around, but as proven by the camera, very very far away.

Technically three in a triangular pattern.
Edit: Explanation.
However, with three or more camera positions.
http://imgur.com/Udd4MTA
Anything that is in line with two cameras can have an image created with the third camera, as seen in the above where the blue dot is in line with 2&3 (creating an angle of 0ยฐ) but 1 can be used to create a stereographic image instead of 2.
With more cameras you can have more appropriately distanced images so that your eyes can adjust easier/better.

We don't need a full 3D mapping. A little parallax is just fine, let the brain fill in the rest.
jacobc436 ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 14:13:08 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
But then it isn't real 3D, it's just a stereo graphic 2D image. It's like playing mono on two speakers and calling it stereo.
Francis_XVII ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 15:11:21 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
... playing two mono channels, one for each ear, is stereo. Same goes for this, unless you want head tracking
jacobc436 ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 17:50:18 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
...playing the SAME mono channel into both your ears is mono.
dorri732 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:57:38 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Of course it is, but taking two shots 20 meters apart wouldn't be the same image, would it?

Imagine this is a piece of a panorama. Turn these two images into a 3d image that our eyes can understand. Im not talking about 3d images made from shots to the left or to the right of this lamp, I'm talking about problems with making 3d images directly in line with the shots.
Edit: and don't tell me about wobble stereoscopy. I mean the kind of 3d that tv's, movie theaters, 3ds, and oculus use.
Francis_XVII ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 23:51:05 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Our eyes perceive two images, side by side, one for each eye. Our brain handles problems with there being insufficient depth information just the same. If is not one mono channel, and the analogy falls.
jacobc436 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:59:34 on January 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Im not sure what you're trying to say. That's been my argument this whole time. If it's a 0ยฐ separation it's too little for the brain to make it a 3d image.
artifex0 ยท 20 points ยท Posted at 07:26:00 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Are you sure? Triangulation is used when you can measure the distance to a point, but photographs don't measure distance- they show the direction of points. It seems like, if you can find the direction of a point, you only need two measurements to locate it.
agemennon ยท 30 points ยท Posted at 07:41:56 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Its still triangulation.
The two points of the camera shot + the point being compared.
The direction vectors allow you calculate two of the angles of the triangle, and you have the length of the line between the two camera shots.
Dakrys ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 07:35:32 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
This is true because we are the third point and we have a fixed perspective with two eyes.

NoWayPAst ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 10:00:05 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Nope, 2 Kameras are enough for 3D Mapping - all the technical equipment uses Stereo Kameras. Triangulation does not come from using three cameras, but from forming a triangle between two observers and an observed point.
The ELI5 why this works: If you have a 2D image and mark a certain point on it, you in reality mark a 1D ray of depth on it - the missing information. using a second image, you can project a differently angeled 1D ray - where they meet is the sought depth coordinate.
I can post images if requested - my english is probably not sufficent to really explain it well.

jacobc436 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:49:46 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
No. That's why they should be placed equidistant from each other.

NoWayPAst ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:28:46 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
Replying to your edit: I am sorry, but your paper metaphor is incorrect.
in your example images you plot the point of the observer ON the image plane, which is not the case, the camera center is a focus length away from the image plane. the edge case that you drew can never occur if the camera images are taken close to parallel in perspective.
See this image, illustrating also my abhorrent drawing skills: http://i.imgur.com/qdbRovm.jpg

It doesn't take away from the experience though. Awesome game with a steep learning curve. Controller required.

Here are some options if you're looking for an all-in-one "super-zoom" camera: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/2015-superzoom-camera-roundup
Here's a focal length simulator: http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/simulator/ It only goes up to 800mm.

damontoo ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 06:21:52 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
TheAdventMaster ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:54:01 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Phrodo_00 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:20:15 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

2000mm...
Kingofthewho5 ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 07:46:49 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I'm more of a birder than than a photographer so the absence of RAW was not a big deal to me. I want affordable portability and reach. P900 is exactly that.

All these people posting video zooms are really missing the point as to why a wide landscape photo with this clarity is absolutely incredible and unprecedented. A zoom lens gif is not unique or interesting or remotely in the ballpark of the significance of OP's post.
SomeRandomMax ยท 76 points ยท Posted at 06:31:53 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
While I agree, the OP's photo is not as impressive as it first sounds. It is not a single photo, it is a panorama made up of 70,000 individual images.
It is still impressive, don't get me wrong, but quite as impressive as the title makes it sound.

At 32bpp, that's 11.6TB of RAM, so I the triumph is in the size of the computer used to render it to a display and then hold it in memory for post processing? And also in the clever software to spread out this work across a parallel compute cluster.
CatAstrophy11 ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 08:18:45 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

photenth ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 08:39:46 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
They even have machines that do the perfect spacing for you. Just mount the camera and let it do the job of taking the pictures.
SomeRandomMax ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:10:40 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yes, there are robotic methods of capturing the images, remapping the flat images to a spherical projection, blending the transitions between images, remapping to the final desired projection, rendering a final full image, and then rendering lower-resolution tiles for a Google Maps style user interface.

SuchIsTheLifeOfDave ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 06:34:32 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I watched an interview where a guy went to a bunch of baseball stadiums and took photos for MLB that can be seen here http://mlb.mlb.com/photos/gigapan/

bigtfatty ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 05:47:41 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
That would be my guess. It's pretty easy to stitch the photos together. My guess a camera with telephoto lens took a shit load of pictures from a single spot and all the pictures were oriented and stitches together. At least that's how previous "largest picture ever" pics have worked. It's the largest picture, not the largest photo.
oswaldcopperpot ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 06:13:00 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I feel like being pedantic, so I'll point out it's not the largest continuous image. It's the largest panorama.
A globe from satellite imagery easily beats this, and both are made using multiple stitched images.
Still, it's really cool.
38Super ยท 31 points ยท Posted at 05:34:17 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Im not sure this is the biggest, Microsoft has done a Terapixel image.
http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/terapixel/
From memory they have now done one of the North Pole of the moon.
Edit: the North Pole of the moon is only 681 Gigapixels.
JustinCayce ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 06:34:09 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I don't know if I'm being inept, but while I can find references to it, the one thing I can't find is the actual image itself.
38Super ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 07:37:24 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It's here. http://lroc.sese.asu.edu/images/gigapan/ These images are never "available" as an image, but viewable using a variety of viewing tools.
uvarov ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 09:31:31 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
The Terapixel mentioned in the article linked is the default 'background' image in WorldWideTelescope - online version here, just zoom in, though it's not the most interesting image.
It's probably obvious but I feel like I should also point out that higher-resolution images exist for smaller areas - for instance the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, which is here (if it doesn't show up, select it from the panel at the bottom of the screen).

SirArkhon ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 06:34:24 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
If you're talking about pixels, no. If you're talking about the overall size of the thing being imaged, the best you can do is a fisheye view of the entire sky to capture roughly half of the observable universe, though it wouldn't be very good.
That said, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope being built in Chile will have a 3.2 gigapixel camera meant for surveying very wide swaths of the sky. See http://www.lsst.org/
ulpisen ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:54:19 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
since op's picture is stitched together you could stitch together a picture of the whole sky, then you have a picture of the whole universe, minus the earth
uvarov ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 09:44:44 on January 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I couldn't (immediately) find the specific resolution of the XDR, but it's only a portion of the previous Ultra-Deep Field, which itself is about 38 megapixels. While the angular resolution of the Deep Field images is extremely high (i.e. the 'distance' between the pixels), it covers an absolutely miniscule section of the sky.
I'm not even trying to figure out the magnitudes properly, but... it's like if the original panorama only showed the face of one of the skiers, but you could see his pores.

But when it's just an interface of many different pictures stitched together non-live in a google-maps style thing then nah.

coolest thing I saw was the ski lift. If there was anyone in there, you would clearly see their face. Which is crazy when zoomed out its just a small dot.
