Yeah things like these are as affecting as REAL traumas like abuse, living in a war zone, living in occupied territories, murder and home invasion. We should definitely stop kids from learning that saws are bad without having them injure a real person first.
Man, I wish I could. I was always a bit saddened that he never recognized his own brilliance. Would have been good for him to see one of his core philosophies so well accepted.

Still, health insurance IS a thing in America... So, I'm confused as to why the joke is to label someone who hasn't heard of health insurance as an American.
It's just that a lot of developed countries that you hear about have nice healthcare. I find it really funny that so many Americans seem to speak about their country as if it's one of the shittiest places on Earth.
right but if you don't, it can be. Not everyone has decent health insurance, and even for those that do, that doesn't guarantee a particular practitioner accepts it.

Cmon, it's funny as hell, and mostly a good lesson not to play with sharp things. I'm pretty sure the kid knew whats up when the real hand was shown and the parents calmed him down. You don't have to raise kids in a complete bubble of safety and "nothing bad can ever happen" set of mind.
In the end it's just a good laugh when the kid gets older.

I'm pretty sure that you shouldn't do that to kids, because of the risk of inducing a trauma. Pretty much the same reason why you shouldn't show kids brutal movies even though they are not real.
My uncle pretended to take my nose when I was a toddler. I seriously though he took my nose and had a meltdown. I was very gullible and he took my nose over and over again because he thought it was hilarious.
Guess what? I'm fine. No trauma. No therapy. Just a funny story. Anyone who thinks that this saw joke is going to cause trauma is raising a generation of wimps.
If a human being cannot get used to dealing with fake trauma which is resolved instantly, how can you ever expect a grown ass person who has been insulated from trauma to cope with it?

You don't have to take a psychology class to realize that children can handle these kinds of pranks. Just spend time around children and you will see that they are pretty intelligent and resilient.

I understand where the opinions like yours are coming from and I respect how people want to raise their own.
Maybe this is because of my own upbringing, but I think that some exposure to the more gruel things in life can't really harm you if you're with family (ofc you don't want to show a kid The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, unlessyou'reoneofthosesadisticsiblings) and I'd like to think it's even good for a kid to have the experience such as 'sharp things = dangerous', 'making people hurt sucks' and 'leave severing limbs to the butcher'.
This brings back memories of my childhood.. My dad sculpted a clay foot with bone, tendons, and painted blood on the top. He was sitting on the couch of our living room with his foot tucked into his pant leg and the clay foot on the floor. He lifted his leg, the foot separated from his pants and he started screaming. I was terrified and crying, my dad always tricked me in the best ways.
This kid learned absolutely nothing. After witnessing first-hand the result of saw-hand contact, he then backs away and at the very end places his hand back on the very same saw.
Meh, this isn't the only injury he'll see in life.

None. How many people have I seen pretend to dismember noses/fingers/arms/etc with props? More than I can accurately recall. It's a simple and age old prank.
I'm honestly not sure if he's old enough to form long term memories yet. He looks to be maybe two... my earliest memory is from before I turned 3 because people kept asking what I wanted for my birthday. He might not ever remember this.

When I was two, I met my father for the first time. I have very clear memories or sitting on the floor of my bedroom before he arrived, trying hard not to get my dress mussed up. I remember following the lines in the wood floor to keep myself quiet and still. I remember getting my tights caught on a splinter.
And that wasn't even a -traumatic- memory. I can't imagine.
When I was 2, I fell in a brick-lined window well and started bleeding profusely. My sister's screaming alerted our mom, who brought me into the house and proceeded to run water over my head to flush the blood away and assess how bad it was. It wasn't too bad, the bleeding stopped shortly after. Now I don't remember the fall itself, but through the years following, I would get these occasional image flashes of blood swirling down a bathtub drain, and one day when I was probably 12, mentioned it to my mom. Her reaction was something like, "my god, you remember that?" and then told me the story. I have a scar on the back of my head so I know it's not a complete fabrication.

Well the way it often works is, something big happens, it gets retold a lot by people around you, when you get lasting memory you pick up the story and try to think back, but instead you imagine what it could've looked like, you unconciously insert that imagination as your memory instead of your interpretation.

I've read an article from some Swedish professor of psychology where he studied a group of modern young adults (his students) and found that they more vulnerable psychologically then older people. They get upset easier, they get more depressive tendencies. Like a man's cat dies and he goes into depression, that kind of level.
His statement is that overprotecting kids from harsher imagery when they young lead to a more infantile adult development.
I mean, it's not a zero-sum thing. You could just not trick your toddler into thinking he horribly maimed you and it doesn't increase the likelihood of other trauma, nor does experiencing this lessen the likelihood of other trauma.

I understand where the opinions like yours are coming from and I respect how people want to raise their own.

This brings back memories of my childhood.. My dad sculpted a clay foot with bone, tendons, and painted blood on the top. He was sitting on the couch of our living room with his foot tucked into his pant leg and the clay foot on the floor. He lifted his leg, the foot separated from his pants and he started screaming. When I was two, I met my father for the first time. I have very clear memories or sitting on the floor of my bedroom before he arrived, trying hard not to get my dress mussed up. I remember following the lines in the wood floor to keep myself quiet and still. I remember getting my tights caught on a splinter.
And that wasn't even a -traumatic- memory. I can't imagine.

When I was 2, I fell in a brick-lined window well and started bleeding profusely. My sister's screaming alerted our mom, who brought me into the house and proceeded to run water over my head to flush the blood away and assess how bad it was. It wasn't too bad, the bleeding stopped shortly after. Now I don't remember the fall itself, but through the years following, I would get these occasional image flashes of blood swirling down a bathtub drain, and one day when I was probably 12, mentioned it to my mom. Her reaction was something like, "my god, you remember that?" and then told me the story. I have a scar on the back of my head so I know it's not a complete fabrication.

Well the way it often works is, something big happens, it gets retold a lot by people around you, when you get lasting memory you pick up the story and try to think back, but instead you imagine what it could've looked like, you unconciously insert that imagination as your memory instead of your interpretation.

I don't know, is there a line, professionally studied and set where we can tell - ok, this stuff actually beneficial to a kids mental health in future and this stuff is harmful?
I've read an article from some Swedish professor of psychology where he studied a group of modern young adults (his students) and found that they more vulnerable psychologically then older people. They get upset easier, they get more depressive tendencies. Like a man's cat dies and he goes into depression, that kind of level.
His statement is that overprotecting kids from harsher imagery when they young lead to a more infantile adult development.
