It was a one stroke penalty if you're interested in the ruling.
"Situation: After missing a short putt Mike Clayton throws his club in the air in frustration. Unfortunately, he doesnโt catch it cleanly on the way down and it falls onto his ball, moving it away from the hole. What is the ruling?
Answer: Mike is penalized one stroke for moving his ball in play and must replace his ball. Rule 18-2a."
golf would benefit from more punitive penalties -- like no use of your driver for three holes, or have to hit the next shot left-handed. a one stroke penalty is just boring.
I knew a guy who would hit his driver out of the fairway for the long bombs. I have no idea how he did it, but it worked.
I have also done the one club challenge when I didn't feel like carrying my whole bag around the course. Putting with an iron actually isn't too much of a disadvantage when you are not a good putter to begin with.
It's honestly not that bad, and if you are just going out for a fun round the challenge can be interesting. It can also help hone different parts of your game. If you only have a five iron then you are forced to either try and get under the ball for loft or punch it for distance and a low trajectory. Learning how to use your clubs individually is far more important than having a super complete set.
I've seen a lot of golfers who would always blame their clubs for their own failures. Also, lots of guys love to say how much their new $1,000 driver will help their long game. Or just straight up buy a new set of clubs because they had a bad round. They just can't get it into their heads that the clubs make up about 1% of the game and it's only relevant to the very best of golfers.
It can also help hone different parts of your game.
This is exactly the mentality I have when I play disc golf with just a driver or just a putter. Sometimes I use the midrange, but that's not as challenging, as it's alright at both aspects.
But man oh man, driving with the putter has taught me quite a bit about my throw.
I also forgot to mention, when you are putting with an iron just flip around and do it opposite handed. If you are a righty, putt lefty with the back of the club head. It's not nearly as good as a putter, but it actually does work acceptably.
When I'm in a scramble and we have a safe shot in play, I'll take a shot with my driver from the fairway on long par 5s sometimes. If I hit it perfectly, I can get an easy 30-40 more yards than my 3 wood. Much higher chance for catastrophic failure though.
The key is to take a shallower plane than normal and try to sweep it off the ground

I used to do the old Driver-off-the-Deck with a 12* offset Cobra, a generation before they came out with the 460cc heads. Thing was a beast. Could hit this nice 260 yard draw without swinging terribly hard. Nothing like the drop-kick 60 yard duck hook into the nearest hazard to whip out a 4-iron layup the next time around, though.
I do that, mainly because I suck with irons. You do it by hitting the ball with the driver, mainly. You obviously won't get the ball in the center of the face without a tee, but that's not the biggest deal.
On the fairway I always use my 3 wood. It's mostly just because I'm a horrible golfer with a weak shot, so I keep it out until I get up close when I will get my shorter irons out. My 4&5 irons never see any action

Translate that one-stroke penalty into falling 10 positions down the leaderboard, or finishing 2nd instead of 1st at the Master's, and that boring penalty looks more like $100,000.
It seems like with enough loopholes he could have gotten it to count as a tap in. The ball was stopped and if he had hit the ball only once and with the head-end of the club it might work.
W00ster ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:09:36 on July 30, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
He is in breach of rule 19-2. Twice!
First when he knocks his ball with the putter, the second when the ball hits him while is laying on the green. Ball must be played from where it ends up, two strokes penalty.
Edit: Rule 18 is for ball at rest, it was not deemed to be at rest when the putter hit the ball, hence rule 19-2 and not 18-2
Well it looks like he missed the hole and would have to take an additional stroke anyway. So if he had to redo the putt from the first spot again and made it in, isn't it still 2 strokes either way?
The way it's written it sounds like the first put was the super simple one. I see what they meant now though. Yeah that would be simple but the first one no way. Plus it may have gone in if he never knocked the ball. Cheers for clarifying though.
It might have gone in. He's lucky they ruled it stopped. Had it been in motion, he would have had to taken the next putt wherever it ended up. Although I have no idea how that ruling works if you redirected a moving ball into the hole.
But it looked like he missed the initial putt anyway. So either way it was two strokes no? Or did the penalty cost him 3 strokes total?

I think the embarrassment is probably worse then the 1 stroke in this case. He fell on his face in the most gentlemen of games. I have to imagine a subreddit of golfers falling down on the green would be very small.

I love the other guy in the background just strolling on by to take his shot, doesn't even miss a step... "Oh, Mike's throwing his putter around and diving on the floor again".
I think it was B. It looks like he was trying to shoo it into the hole and it slips. As he sees it slip he dives at it in horror only to miss it and fall right in the path of the deflected ball. Poor guy just can't catch a break.

Can someone point me to a more pretentious game than golf with all the white outfits an gear and not being able to play unless someone you know owns a lot of land
You can buy beater clubs for a buck apiece from a Goodwill, used Top-Flites for $0.25 bulk, and get out for 9 holes on a lot of ratty munis for $10 (for 2.5 hours of entertainment). How much does paintball cost? Hockey? A dozen other things off the top of my head?
Sure, playing a high-quality place might run you $100 or so, but people spend more than that on tickets to pro sports games, and nobody calls them pretentious.
Plus is boring as shit (to me), you drive to where the ball is and someone el se carry your stuff. (No offense golf fans)
swagen ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:01:49 on July 31, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I can play in my living room wearing my skibbies. It's not pretentious unless you're at those country clubs with dress codes and food & beverage minimums. The municipal courses in my area only ask that you don't BYOB for liquor licensing reasons, and that you keep the golf carts 20 yards from the greens.
Posts MUST show evident regret
All links must clearly show a person expressing regret, not just show an act of failing. Regret needs to be clear on the person's face, or portrayed through body language. If you have a gif that shows someone failing, and DOESN'T show regret afterward, it doesn't belong here

Gaston44 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:35:00 on July 30, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
To be fair that putt wasn't that short and he missed it by an inch. He shouldn't have been that frustrated, shit like that sometimes happens.
dkyguy1995 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:34:57 on July 30, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Man a one stroke penalty on a tap in, shitty luck, but the regret is surely strong in this one
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:33:02 on July 30, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I think the embarrassment is probably worse then the 1 stroke in this case. He fell on his face in the most gentlemen of games. I have to imagine a subreddit of golfers falling down on the green would be very small.

Right at the end when he throws the golf club it looks like the ball gains momentum toward the cup.

I dont think he threw it on purpose, I think it slipped. It looked like he either
A. Thought it was going in and was raising it in celebration
B. Was trying to will it to go a little bit further.
giantgnat ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 17:54:21 on July 30, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I think it was B. It looks like he was trying to shoo it into the hole and it slips. As he sees it slip he dives at it in horror only to miss it and fall right in the path of the deflected ball. Poor guy just can't catch a break.
smileysocks ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:25:38 on July 31, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I think he may have mistaken the other guy as his caddy. It doesn't look like a throw of frustration at all.
gm4 ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 17:25:00 on July 30, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
It wasn't frustration, he thought it was in, and it slipped. You ever watched golf before?

He needs to use my wife's miniature golf, steering the rolling ball with the putter technique. According to her, that's not an actual stroke.
Olcaptainredeye ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:07:20 on July 30, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
As my old golf coach used to say. I'm you do something stupid, it's prob 2 strokes.

iamsofired ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:00:41 on July 30, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Looks like the club wouldve rested safely on the other side of the hole if he let it drop - solid clip though very unusual.

Can someone point me to a more pretentious game than golf with all the white outfits an gear and not being able to play unless someone you know owns a lot of land
ZeiglerJaguar ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 05:07:30 on July 31, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
You can buy beater clubs for a buck apiece from a Goodwill, used Top-Flites for $0.25 bulk, and get out for 9 holes on a lot of ratty munis for $10 (for 2.5 hours of entertainment). How much does paintball cost? Hockey? A dozen other things off the top of my head?
Sure, playing a high-quality place might run you $100 or so, but people spend more than that on tickets to pro sports games, and nobody calls them pretentious.
Astramancer_ ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:37:33 on July 31, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Polo.
Not only do you need to know someone who owns lots of land, but you also need to know a lot of someones who own horses, too.

swagen ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:01:49 on July 31, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
I can play in my living room wearing my skibbies. It's not pretentious unless you're at those country clubs with dress codes and food & beverage minimums. The municipal courses in my area only ask that you don't BYOB for liquor licensing reasons, and that you keep the golf carts 20 yards from the greens.

Posts MUST show evident regret All links must clearly show a person expressing regret, not just show an act of failing. Regret needs to be clear on the person's face, or portrayed through body language. If you have a gif that shows someone failing, and DOESN'T show regret afterward, it doesn't belong here
downvote me asswipes its the rules
