When I was a kid, I was a huge fan of Alanis Morissette. One of her songs contains the lyric 'you know how us Catholic girls can be'. I promptly updated my MSN messenger name to this, not really knowing what being Catholic meant, just liked the song. A friend of mine saw and sent me a long message pouring his heart out to me about his religion and parents how he hadn't got anyone to talk to about it because he didn't know any other Catholics 'until now'. I couldn't bare to tell him the real reason...

I'm currently job hunting for something writing-based, as its my best skill and the one I have most CV-worthy experience in. The best option out there by far is Technical Writer, with other options including: journalism, copywriting, and proofreading/publishing. I highly recommend technical writing though, as it tends to pay very well even at entry level, and (just based on personal experience) they're easier to clear the CV stage and get an interview for.

TheFireflies · 9 points · Posted at 20:45:47 on February 6, 2016 · (Permalink)

Copywriting also isn't bad on the pay scale, especially if you can get into tech.

Asarath · 3 points · Posted at 21:53:28 on February 6, 2016 · (Permalink)

For the jobs I've been applying for, the graduate positions tend to be offering around £25,000. I don't know much about positions with experience but I've seen ads for more experienced tech writers offering £45-55,000.

SaltyBabe · 1 points · Posted at 00:42:13 on February 7, 2016 · (Permalink)

My uncle does technical writing for the Navy, primarily nuclear submarines. He's extremely well versed and interested in the subject, took it up after retiring from the Navy. He hates it, it's soul killingly boring and allows zero room for any passion or writing style to be expressed. Although It does pay well.

really_rob · 2 points · Posted at 09:30:00 on February 7, 2016 · (Permalink)

He should stop doing it if he hates it. I've been a tech writer for 16 years and I teach it at university. I love it.

It's not boring at all. I'm constantly playing with new stuff, talking to people who develop the stuff, and playing with words to find the best way to say stuff. Yes, stuff.

So, I'm sorry for your uncle, but the more people who don't like it, the better for me.

SaltyBabe · 1 points · Posted at 19:53:04 on February 7, 2016 · (Permalink)

I believe that's the plan once his wife retires. It wasn't his "life goal" to be a technical writer, just something to buffer his income after retirement. Maybe if it's you're desire to actually be a technical writer it would be more rewarding, he's just a high ranking retired navy man who likes writing and wasn't expecting what he got.

really_rob · 2 points · Posted at 23:36:51 on February 7, 2016 · (Permalink)

Or maybe the kind of writing he has to do is boring. I'm sure there's boring tech writing work out there.

Also, and I don't know him so I'm not making a judgement, but maybe he's not very good at it and doesn't know how to make it more interesting.

SaltyBabe · 1 points · Posted at 23:40:47 on February 7, 2016 · (Permalink)

He thinks using an em dash makes him look smart. He's not using it right, and he's using a hyphen with spaces around it instead of an actual em dash or two dashes/hyphens. It's like people who try to look smarter by using semicolons without actually realizing they aren't always a substitute for a period.

I don't give a fuck about grammar in most cases, but if you're going to put people down for using English casually rather than formally, you should at least be using proper grammar (and the proper form of it) yourself.

So avoid using the word ‘very’ because it’s lazy. A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. Don’t use very sad, use morose. Language was invented for one reason, boys—to woo women—and, in that endeavor, laziness will not do.

[deleted] · 22 points · Posted at 18:29:24 on February 6, 2016 · (Permalink)

Yeah our grading system goes from A1,A2,B1 all the way to F. He is referring to a grade he received in the leaving cert which is the test you take in Ireland that determines what university you get into.

PresterJuan · 2 points · Posted at 23:40:19 on February 6, 2016 · (Permalink)

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 00:20:54 on February 7, 2016 · (Permalink)

Yeah, the funny thing is, Ireland uses both systems. CEFR is for university level foreign languages though. An Irish person wouldn't use it for English (or even Irish (Gaelige) for that matter) as they are supposed to be fluent by the end of secondary school (thus above the CEFR which ends in 'Native' level)

Well, Yik Yak does have a character limit. If you want to be eloquent, you also have to be brief, lest you split your comment into several splintered blurbs that can be interrupted.

Shorthand is also a thing people do. Personally, as long as the idea gets across, it doesn't matter how it got there.

I was trying very hard to avoid sounding like the guy, but I guess I failed.

A lot of the things said in this thread are making me reconsider what folk think of me, since I tend to wax poetic when there's no need. I just like pointlessly ornamental language, I'm not trying to be pretentious.

KeveK0 · 5 points · Posted at 16:38:24 on February 6, 2016 · (Permalink)

Funniest thing is his grammar is poor, he even uses the wrong tense. He means to say "In America, I would have..." but just says "In America, I have...".

Now I guess I'm even smarter than very smart, pure delirium.

[deleted] · 3 points · Posted at 00:36:42 on February 7, 2016 · (Permalink)*

Can 100% confirm. Having lived in both places, the Irish are just more blunt about it. This guy believes that every American he has ever met thinks he is a genius, because they politely smiled and walked away. Everyone in Ireland has been honest with him his whole life....he thinks it is a cultural flaw and that only Americans desperately trying to get away appreciate his eloquence.

nyctaeris · 0 points · Posted at 16:54:51 on February 7, 2016 · (Permalink)

More so, IMO. Americans aren't always blunt but there's a huge preference here right now to hate on people using words of more than one syllable. I get called out at work pretty regularly if I accidentally throw a "five dollar" word in, even common ones.

"In America I have a slew of suggestions from well-wishers by now"

Either he means "I would have had a slew of suggestions" or else the "by now" part doesn't make sense. You don't use "by now" when you're talking about a thing that happened, you use it when you're talking about hypotheticals e.g. "If I'd have saved $1 a day since I was born I'd have $12k saved up by now".

Either way he fucked up in his own reply about his verbal proficiency.

Skylar: But you can do my o-chem paper in under an hour.

Will: Right. Well, I mean when it came to stuff like that... I could always just play.
