I love when someone posts something to Imgur, the site which was designed solely for use by Reddit and which gets 99% of its traffic from Reddit, and all the "imgurians" freak the fuck out like we're invading their safe space.

I don't like that reddit for the sole reason that the CSS is so well-made that many times I've thought I'm actually on imgur and try to upload images...

I'm kinda amused by them. Have they never used Reddit before? Because afaik, Reddit has no local image sharer.

My sister stays on imgur. I've tried to convince her to switch to Reddit, but she says reddit is too confusing. Which I understand. I stayed on Fark for the longest because reddit's layout confused me.

That's why I still use the regular mobile format rather that the one they have in beta. I dind the new format confusing and unsettling.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:57:54 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It's literally links. How is this confusing? Reddit is one of the most basic websites ever.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:57:42 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I agree with you, but hear me out.
Pretty much every website and message board I frequented back then had a set layout. Discussion concerning news was in the "news" section, general discussions were in the "general" section, etc. Even if they had a front page highlighting the hot topic in each section, they were still separated.
Reddit's front page was not and is not like that. It throws everything up on the front page and sorts it by overall popularity. The board "topic" is a tiny link underneath the subject headline.
Even the comment section, which I have always stayed in, is set up different. Instead of putting the replies in order of submission time, it is arranged by popularity. To make things even more confusing, you respond directly to that person, instead of copy pasting their comment and your reply and making that a new comment (or thread).
Once you train yourself how to sort reddit in your mind, it becomes very basic. But you have to want to use it in order to put up with getting used to reddit's formatting.
It has built up its own community now and isn't just a reddit image host anymore and imgur people gets angry at reddit because when a image get popular it goes to the front page without any context and it becomes confusing.
My cousin let me ride on his back (when I was really really young... Like 4-5?)
He slammed me into a wall because he thought it was funny. My ear cartilage broke. I have a Vulcan ear now.
My aunt and grandmother were getting mad at me for crying over such a small thing.
It's not really visible (it's just a slightly pointy lump), but if you feel it it's really pointy.
I think that cousin is highly autistic. No one ever mentions it in the family though and when he's brought up its nothing but praise. His older brother is practically out oust though because he had a female roommate. No they weren't dating (and even if they were FWB he was like 20 who the fuck cares?)
Come to think of it I haven't seen him in years.

Oh wow, I basically did the same thing only I tripped and fell into the corner of a skirting board. The scar's still pretty visible

Wait, are you me? When I was 3 I went down the stairs on my motercycle and almost bit off my tounge. also it was dangling half off. I still have the scar from it.
My dumbass fell and hit the bottom corner of a fridge. I don't know how it happened but somehow my tongue ended up between the corner of the fridge and my teeth, so now I have this wonderful scar on my tongue from that.
That happened to me when I was six. Except I didn't fall. My sister threw me on the couch and I bounced off. But my mom told me I was surprisingly calm about the whole thing.

I (being ~10 years old) and some friends decided we'll play an awesome game in which we throw "spears" (pointy sticks, ~1,5m long) at each other and doge and/ or parry them. Turns out that wasnt the greatest idea! One of my friends "parries" and the stick hits my forehead instead (not with the pointy end though). Bleeds quite a bit and I am brought to the hospital. Still have a scar on my forehead. Oh and did I mention all of this happened on my moms 40th birthday?

My favorite part is Sharon's claim that her son "knows all of the lakes".
A quick Google search just told me that there are at least 117 million lakes in the world.
The other day I told someone that I used to think the province was called Ottawa because the lake is called Ottawa. They then informed me that it's Lake Ontario. ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ
Nah, The great lakes are Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior. Bear and Slave are MUCH farther north. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Lakes
EDIT: Double ontario
[deleted] ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 21:41:04 on January 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
You've got two Ontarios in there. One should be Erie.
Dude, come on. All countries are fictional outside of Mexico, Canada, and THE GLORIOUS UNITED STATES OF AMERICA LONG MAY SHE REIGN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the Dominican Republic because I went there once. And Ethiopia because I also went there once... wait.
yaosio ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:05:56 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
That's what they want you to think. There are two hidden lakes under the great lakes that house all of the dead children that didn't listen to their mothers.
The capitals/mottos are impressive but not unrealistic, "lakes" obviously refers to the Great Lakes, and by countries she probably means the most populated 40 or 50 with a few outliers.
Everything considered, I can tell you that there are 3โ4 year olds capable of what she describes. And remember, if we're talking about someone with 1/1000 intelligence, that's actually pretty common when you start talking about communities with hundreds of thousands or millions of people.
Not sure why you're getting down voted. There are 3-year-olds that can do this, though they are probably closer in age to 4 than no. And of course everything they do is memorized, not actually "understanding". But here's a 3 year old who knows everything about the periodic table.
That being said, I think the mom is a tool for using it as a humble-brag on a parenting forum. If her kid is actually a genius, she shouldn't be answering parent's questions about "what's normal?"
Both say that at around 2 years, toddlers can only string together very basic words, and at 3 they can only talk about their immediate, basic surroundings. Let's say you take one to a lake.
Mom: "See honey? This is a lake. There are 5 Great Lakes. Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior! Can you name all 5?"
However, as the other person who replied to me said (and like I almost said in my post,) 3 can mean 3 years 11 months. There have been 4 year olds who could perform at adult levels.
It doesn't say all countries in each continent. The kid probably knows 2 or 3 per continent and the mother just stretched the truth a little.
Kroneni ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 12:21:49 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
even then, a kid that is 2 years old doesn't know that germany is in europe. they were just trained to say it. if you tell a 2 year old the same thing over and over again they will eventually start repeating it, that doesn't mean they understand what they are saying.
prium ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:09:14 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah I think a three year old might be believable, but I doubt a two year old could even grasp the simplified concept of a place where everyone drinks beer and eats sausages, and that is separated from where they are by a lot of water.
I can name them all if I have an unlabeled map in front of me. I study a map of the world every morning as I eat my breakfast. But I need the map to remind me, I can't just count them out.
I'm into maps and shit, so I could probably name them all with enough time, but there's no way I could label them all. There's just too many tiny island nations in small spaces. If island nations didn't exist, I got you, but those fuckers are impossible.
I dunno, give me some paper and I could probably rattle off most of the countries. It's gonna be the tiny, like 10 people countries that'll be the hardest.

Im cringing at the amount of people that the joke went right over their head. For people that might not get it, the first reply is a joke making fun of Vicky because 2 year olds don't usually know their abc's
Literally not trying to brag here but my son knew his alphabet while 2 and I've known at least 3 other 2 year olds who have as well. I'm not sure the first question was a joke.
AsianEgo ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 04:56:32 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There are definitely kids that learn it but the question came off more as a humble brag than anything. There are kids that can barely talk at 2 or 3 let alone recite the alphabet. It could be that's she's a new mom that is just naive but I think there are other places she would go to get those answers rather than what ever forum she was on.

I didn't realize it was a joke cause I have no concept of what kids should know by the age of 3.
Are they walking? Are they still in diapers? Can they read yet? I have no idea.
Cayou ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 01:33:50 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Walking? Yes, that starts between age 1 and 1ยฝ. Diapers? Probably not, but some might still be potty training (around age 1ยฝ to 3, there's a lot of variation). Reading? Most likely not (around age 5, give or take a year).
Yes to walking. Maybe diapers, some might still be potty training - though most do that around 2ish. Maybe reading small words or short picture books if they are ahead of the game (I've known kids who can do this at 3). Most will be learning just their ABCs at preschool at this point. Flash cards with simple words like 'ball'. Another thing to remember is that "just turned 3" is a world of difference from 3 1/2 or almost 4. There are massive leaps and bounds in milestones during those early years. :)
Lol walking. Try running like a madman. All the time. And never napping. I get up early these days. Lots of coffee coffee haha

limette ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:37:04 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
3-years-olds can run, climb furniture and kick balls, hold crayons to draw, eat (messily) on their own, and put on their clothes by themselves (but will need help for laces and buttons). They should speak clearly enough to be understood by strangers, and can carry conversations for about 3-4 turns. Kids stop needing diapers during daytime between age 2 to 4, usually.
Some will "know their ABC's", meaning they can sing the alphabet song, like they can sing any other songs. Typical 3-years-olds will not understand that the "song's lyrics" are actual meaningful letters that can be written down, though they can recognize some letters (usually those of their name), if they are taught to do so (and they tend to be very rigid about the shape of the letters, assuring you you wrote the letters wrong if you use a different handwriting or font).
Connguy ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:23:35 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Rule of thumb is: Walk at 1, Talk at 2.
Not knowing the ABC's at 3 may be a little slow, but not way behind or anything. Knowing ABC's is a fairly advanced step compared to learning just to say words
Is early to mid average. A lot can sing their abcs at that age but cannot identify individual letters.
Its not uncommon come kinder for there to be a range of kids that know 0 letters to kids that can read a little.

It's slowly turning into what /r/tumblrinaction is, taking jokes and trolls seriously.
"vicariously" is one of those words that I don't know if I've ever seen someone use it outside of the phrase "living vicariously through someone else". Is there a term for words that have a general meaning, but are usually only used as part of a specific phrase?
in psychology, there's something called "vicarious trauma." it's basically when a therapist is traumatized by their client's trauma. i wouldn't say it's a fossil word, since it is still used widely.
limette ยท 30 points ยท Posted at 02:10:57 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There's also vicarious learning: when you learn something by seeing it happen (or hearing about it), while you do not experience it yourself, and the situation was not intended for you to learn something.
Example: you see someone approach a dog and get growled at; you learn that this dog is not friendly.
Kroneni ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 12:24:14 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
whats really interesting about vicarious learning is that humans aren't the only creatures that do it. even octopuses are capable of learning by observation.
Fossil words are words that are completely obsolete, except outside their well-known phrase. For example, no one uses the word 'amok' outside of "run amok"; amok is a fossil word.
Vicarious is a word that's used today. It's definitely mainly used in 'living vicariously through...', but it's not dead outside of that phrase.
I think "fossil word" might be as close as we can get; just wanted to point out the (obviously minor and probably pedantic) difference.
Would you consider torrential, as in, 'torrential downpour", under this same undefined category?
I wouldn't, because it's used properly in other phrases. You do hear people say "torrential rain", "torrential flow", etc. Torrential is a word with a very particular meaning, so it's used rarely in general, and most often in it's key phrase (like you said, torrential downpour).
Like I said above, I don't know that there's a better description than fossil word, but the words we're talking about here aren't that because they're not obsolete outside their key phrase, just used rarely / have very specific meanings. If someone called them 'fossil words' at a party, I'd probably keep my mouth shut because I don't have the correct answer and it's honestly close enough!
Quick googling gave me the sample phrase "she enjoyed the wedding vicariously" for another example because I was curious too.
[deleted] ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 21:22:54 on January 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I think the literal definition of the word is an adverb that means doing something through someone else. So if you do see it out of that context then it's wrong.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:55:52 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
So doesn't that make the term itself redundant? Like saying ATM machine?
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:56:37 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
Not really, because it can describe experiencing the same thing (an intense form of empathy) in different contexts. Living vicariously through someone else (making up for feelings of inadequacy by pushing someone to do what you wish you could do) is different to feeling a vicarious thrill (a more involuntary feeling of excitement that is in line with what you imagine another person is feeling) watching someone skydive, which is different to experiencing vicarious trauma (basically empathizing so hard that it traumatizes you) when hearing someone describe their time in a concentration camp. It's the same concept in all three, but has different intent/implication based on the context.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:23:01 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Not quite. You can say, "they are doing that vicariously." It still makes sense and is quite a common occurrence. The, "through someone else" part is redundant but no one will actually ever call you out on that.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:38:00 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
That's what I was referring to being redundant
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:56:07 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

agtk ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 23:24:23 on January 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There's a legal term called "vicarious liability" that we deal with all the time.
limette ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 02:19:39 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
"A fossil word is a word that is broadly obsolete but remains in currency because it is contained within an idiom still in use".
That's the term you were looking for, although vicariously isn't one.
As someone else linked to, "collocation" is a more accurate term for this particular example. Though in truth neither collocation nor fossil word completely capture the usage patterns for "vicariously".
limette ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:53:38 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Collocation is when two words are used very often together, while fossil words are words that are only used in certain phrases. Both concepts are similar as they are often related to idioms.
ย
Your original comment refers to both:
"vicariously" is one of those words that I don't know if I've ever seen someone use it outside of the phrase "living vicariously through someone else".
--> collocation
Is there a term for words that have a general meaning, but are usually only used as part of a specific phrase?
A vicarious thrill? That's the only other phrase, or more common context I suppose, I can think of. But the word vicarious is versatile enough to use periodically.

I see vicariously used on a regular basis, by perfectly non-pretentious people. I use it too because I don't know of any better substitute. But that's of course only my personal experience.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:49:22 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I've heard people use the term "a vicarious thrill" when describing how they felt seeing someone do something exciting. Vicarious literally means "to experience something by watching someone else" though, so you probably won't ever see it out of that context.
I tend to use it to describe the shame or embarrassment you feel for a character in a TV show or movie as in "Vicarious shame." Or If I'm talking about the Tool song. But otherwise, I've also only ever heard it that way.
oromab ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:06:11 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
South Park used it in the "Mr Hanky the Christmas Poo" song.
sludj5 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:35:16 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
'Vicarious redemption' is also a thing and I can say in all honesty I've used that word in other contexts, personally
I just realized ours has 5 and it's a very pretty and not especially unusual name.Everyone can pronounce it without thinking twice. I also have 4 and none unnecessary.
I don't think it was a conscious troll. I think it was an idiot parent who thinks there are honestly like, 10 lakes in the world. Compared to the parent, the child is indeed a goddamned genius.
If you look under the heading, You can see that many states are condensed into Their own lists on separate pages. We don't have the most though. That honor goes to Canada, Containing more than half of the worlds lakes.
R99 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:49:23 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There's 15 thousand lakes in my state alone, and the state is roughly the size of England. Does England have more? Honestly curious.
If there's one thing that having a kid has taught me about other parents, it's that there's a certain subset of parents who make it their goal in life to one-up other parents in bragging about their kid. When my daughter was 6 months old I remember seeing other parents talk about how their kid is already walking and talking at that age, and it just continues from there.
Skinnj ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 21:41:50 on January 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
The problem is that these kids may read and do maths and all that jazz when they are in 1st grade... but they most often camt stay put and work or go to the toilet, because somehow the parents forgot to teach some of these life skills.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:02:05 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It's so goddamn irritating. You're kind of forced to be an "adult" about it too, you can't say anything. What are you gonna say? Nah man your kids a fucking retard. Calling toddlers retarded isn't a good look. You're left with "oh? that's really great"
Vickiy should have responded by saying something like "well at least my daughter wont have trouble making friends and going on dates while your autistic son stays at home."
How is it possible to know the numbers to 1000 but nothing beyond that. Surely if he's so smart by the time he reached 1000 he could see the pattern and figure out what comes next
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:17:29 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I always feel really bad for veteran players that still don't understand how to create an endgame build, and level skills all wrong on new character rolls.
I'm 99% sure Sharon is picking on Vickiy (also, really?) for being worried that a not-quite-3-year-old doesn't know the alphabet yet. You know, that age where many children still can't even use full sentences.
Charily ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:51:54 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
shit I couldn't recite my abc's until I was in grade 4.
I knew all my letters and was good at math and everything, but knowing how to recite the alphabet is probably one of the most useless skills you need to know.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:38:20 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Of course Alexander also can't make eye contact or tolerate the sound of a faucet, flaps his arms while squatting and will peel scales off the goldfish and put them on his penis as well. Is that too early too?
Is the Theory of Relativity something you can recite? It's a scientific theory, not a speech or a poem or a book. I guess Einstein wrote it down and published it, but the concept of "reciting" it seems like it's not a thing.

"My claim to fame is that my son is a fast learner, this is all I have in life: is that my son is a fast learner. Forget love and compassion, that can all go to shit when my son is a fast learner. Life is complete and everything is good because my son is a fast learner. My life is perfect, and I know you're jealous, but I can't help it that my son is a fast learner."
According to Wikipedia, that means her son can, at the very least, speak fluently French, Hawaiian, and English. According to her post, she can barely speak English. Somehow I doubt she could've taught her kid anything that she claimed to have taught.
EDIT: another look says that he would've needed to learn Samoan, Chinook Jargon (whatever that is), Spanish, and Greek as well

State motto of Maryland is in Italian...just throwing that out there.
That being said, I've memorized a shit load of Latin phrases, that doesn't make me fluent in Latin. Memorizing phrases is doesn't require knowing what they mean or speaking the language.
I guess, yeah- I was looking at it from an academic standpoint. But even still- dozens of phrases in Latin and other languages for a three year old to remember is still a hefty order.
Smgth ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:15:35 on January 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Oh it's totally bullshit, but it's still a far cry from multiple fluencies.
Although, there have been some super genius child prodigies. My man Jeremy Bentham knew Latin at 3. But when a kid is THAT good, it tends to be international news.
Maybe her son should teach her how to spell "colors".

Stevey854 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:08:56 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Oh and did I mention all of this happened on my moms 40th birthday?

hewhoreddits6 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 23:54:09 on January 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Let's disregard all her claims, because most kids can barely speak at age 2.
latigidigital ยท -4 points ยท Posted at 10:22:12 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
She's probably just got a tendency to generalize.
Edit: You guys almost have me down to -5, meanwhile there are examples you can see for yourselves on YouTube. (Link courtesy of itchyweed via replies.)
itchytweed ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:22:37 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Not sure why you're getting down voted. There are 3-year-olds that can do this, though they are probably closer in age to 4 than no. And of course everything they do is memorized, not actually "understanding". But here's a 3 year old who knows everything about the periodic table.
That being said, I think the mom is a tool for using it as a humble-brag on a parenting forum. If her kid is actually a genius, she shouldn't be answering parent's questions about "what's normal?"
latigidigital ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:23:26 on January 31, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Thanks.
And yes, it's a bit thoughtless in that case, although brilliant people can still live in an intellectual bubble.
She may not think twice about it and then realize 20 years later that she was being a heel.
hewhoreddits6 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:35:46 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Ok, let's do a quick google search of "when babies learn to talk". Here are the first two results:http://www.webmd.com/parenting/guide/baby-talk-your-babys-first-words and http://www.babycenter.com/0_your-childs-talking-timeline_10356902.bc
2/3 year old: "Lake!"
latigidigital ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:06:34 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I stand by my point.
However, as the other person who replied to me said (and like I almost said in my post,) 3 can mean 3 years 11 months. There have been 4 year olds who could perform at adult levels.
Edit: from the other reply - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nGz7xgGJzc

I'm into maps and shit, so I could probably name them all with enough time, but there's no way I could label them all. There's just too many tiny island nations in small spaces. If island nations didn't exist, I got you, but those fuckers are impossible.

Both 'bragging' posts seem to be jokes- I just don't know how so many people in this thread don't realize that.

Im cringing at the amount of people that the joke went right over their head. For people that might not get it, the first reply is a joke making fun of Vicky because 2 year olds don't usually know their abc's
venerated ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:26:36 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Reading? Most likely not (around age 5, give or take a year).

mrsforsyte ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 01:55:47 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
minichado ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 12:33:24 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

They're right here on reddit, but being put ahead in school with taller kids sucks so they shut up.
limette ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:37:04 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

"vicariously" is one of those words that I don't know if I've ever seen someone use it outside of the phrase "living vicariously through someone else". Is there a term for words that have a general meaning, but are usually only used as part of a specific phrase?
blackfish_xx ยท 55 points ยท Posted at 21:30:02 on January 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
in psychology, there's something called "vicarious trauma." it's basically when a therapist is traumatized by their client's trauma. i wouldn't say it's a fossil word, since it is still used widely.
limette ยท 30 points ยท Posted at 02:10:57 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There's also vicarious learning: when you learn something by seeing it happen (or hearing about it), while you do not experience it yourself, and the situation was not intended for you to learn something.
Example: you see someone approach a dog and get growled at; you learn that this dog is not friendly.
Kroneni ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 12:24:14 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
whats really interesting about vicarious learning is that humans aren't the only creatures that do it. even octopuses are capable of learning by observation.

FattestRabbit ยท 55 points ยท Posted at 22:47:04 on January 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
TIT_GOBBLER ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 00:48:41 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Would you consider torrential, as in, 'torrential downpour", under this same undefined category?
BasicallyADoctor ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 00:56:49 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Not really because it's the adjective form of torrent, which is used admittedly little in English on its own.
featherfooted ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 02:02:38 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
but there's multiple uses of that phrase, though.
torrential rains, torrential downpour, torrential storm, etc
Whereas there is but a single "run amok".
Trollfouridiots ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:41:19 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Torrential onslaught
torrential despair
torrential flatulence
torrential questioning
Those all make perfect sense.
FattestRabbit ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:23:19 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
If someone called them 'fossil words' at a party, I'd probably keep my mouth shut because I don't have the correct answer and it's honestly close enough!
sideplank ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:28:51 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

FattestRabbit ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:20:05 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Off the top of my head:
"bated" isn't used outside "waiting with bated breath"
"fro" isn't [properly] used outside "to and fro"
"spick" isn't [properly] used outside of "spick and span"
edit: The wikipedia article actually lists out a lot of them!

Greentoads41 ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 21:09:41 on January 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

"A fossil word is a word that is broadly obsolete but remains in currency because it is contained within an idiom still in use".

PrancingPeach ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:30:05 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

I've heard people use the term "a vicarious thrill" when describing how they felt seeing someone do something exciting. Vicarious literally means "to experience something by watching someone else" though, so you probably won't ever see it out of that context.

Is the Theory of Relativity something you can recite? It's a scientific theory, not a speech or a poem or a book. I guess Einstein wrote it down and published it, but the concept of "reciting" it seems like it's not a thing.

-"rhfghwwerrl!" - "He also says Pluto is not a planet!"

The sarcasm is dripping from Sharon's comment though.

Shit, I apparently knew how to read when I was three. Now in grad school and still have to use my hands to tell which way is left...it's all downhill

Congrats Sharon! Son is on the spectrum.

I'm starting to think that everyone on here is autistic. It's pretty obvious that she's joking. She's making fun of Vickiy for her dumb question.
sibivel ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:53:02 on January 30, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It's pretty obvious Sharon is joking. She's being sarcastic to op because no one should be worried their kid doesn't know the alphabet by three.

Exactly!

According to Wikipedia, that means her son can, at the very least, speak fluently French, Hawaiian, and English. According to her post, she can barely speak English. Somehow I doubt she could've taught her kid anything that she claimed to have taught.
EDIT: another look says that he would've needed to learn Samoan, Chinook Jargon (whatever that is), Spanish, and Greek as well
Smgth ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:48:33 on January 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
State motto of Maryland is in Italian...just throwing that out there.
That being said, I've memorized a shit load of Latin phrases, that doesn't make me fluent in Latin. Memorizing phrases is doesn't require knowing what they mean or speaking the language.
airtroop392 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:54:59 on January 29, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Worst part about that kind of person is they're not actually happy for their kid; they're taking vicarious pride in it. It's just another form of vanity.
