Yeah I don't even think it's the right usage of the word. Pretty sure hirsute is a term for something that is unusually hairy, not something that normally has hair. Also, cats don't have hair, they have fur.
I just clicked there and looked around. Didn't see any granny porn. Seems to be mostly things like "[G]ot my first pearl necklace today!" then you click it and it's a picture of an old lady wearing an actual freshwater pearl necklace. Things like that.

Bear in mind he also used it incorrectly. A very hairy man or woman would be more appropriate. (Like one of those dudes who can take his shirt off and look like he's wearing a sweater) All cats are fuzzy anyway.
Technically, by definition, hirsute just means hairy. But common usage often means 'unusually' hairy.
Costco1L · 17 points · Posted at 23:05:04 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)
Sure, but it sounds pretentious and incorrect to refer to someone moderately hairy as hirsute. Common usage, here, is more important than the dictionary.
It is super pretentious. And yes, common usage usually trumps dictionaries. Dictionaries are just descriptions of how people use words, and sometimes they don't keep up with shifts in language. Especially on words that don't get much common usage.
Dent18 · 3 points · Posted at 04:17:28 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
No it can be used to mean a hairy chest or legs, but I think there is a disease called hirsutism that makes women unusually hairy. Also cats have fur not hair.
Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.
As someone who is a scientist who studies fur, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls fur hair. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.
If you're saying "hair family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of capillum, which includes things from feathers to quills to mustaches.
So your reasoning for calling fur hair is because random people "call the stringy stuff hair?" Let's get pubes and yarn in there, then, too.
Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. Fur is fur and a member of the hair family. But that's not what you said. You said a fur is hair, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the hair family hairs, which means you'd call wool, down, and other coverings hair, too. Which you said you don't.
EDIT: sorry, the only reason i say this is that this fealine in this picture is to pretend he is hirsute. i should say that this one particular fealine is dumb.
EDIT: hey asshats quit downvoting me i am not the one who tried claim fur was hair.
EDIT: hey before you hit that down arrow why don't you ask yourself why you can't take a joke you losers. jesus the pc crap has extended to small tigres? because that is all those things are, and no one was bawling when that chimp got shot for eating that lady's face. so are you racist for small tigres over gorillas? hippocrites.
EDIT: is it a bunch of peta lamebrains doing this? did my one little joke hit some kind of tree-hugger blog or some shit? i have never so much as even spit on a fealine! wtf? i ate dog one time, it was in a burger; i had alligator, and something they told me was eagle but i'm positive it was just chicken. whatever anyone is saying about me and fealines is not even true. but go on farteaters, downvote away. it shows how stupid you are.
EDIT: spelling.
EDIT: this is such shit. i have never received as much as one single downvote in my life and you peckers are jumping on this stupid fealine-loving bandwagon. that is a dumb goddamn fealine claiming it has fur and not hair and that is all. i'm not going to apologize to you idiots any more.
EDIT: you know, now my feelings are hurt. the amount of downvotes piled on me is just excessive. god for-fucking-bid i had commented on a post about an cannine, i would be at -1000 by now. you people are horrible.
But they also have whiskers so they could be called hirsute if they have an unusual amount of whiskers? After all, aren't a lot of whiskers on granny called hirsute?
In Italian, the closest word is "irsuto" which means unusually hairy, unruly and... pointy? I don't really know how to phrase that. But yeah, he couldn't even bother to search for the right usage. Lupus in fabula indeed.
(That last sentence was /s)
NINJA EDIT: Bushy. That's the word. Like pubic hair.

Veterinarian-in-training here! Hirsutism is still a possible dermatological symptom even in animals with fur. Think EXTRA hair growth - strands and often length per follicle - resulting in an unusually thick coat.
Yeah, I always took the word to mean "having more instances of hair", not "having longer hair". I think the hair/fur distinction is nitpicking though. Regardless, this guy definitely learned the word from porn. That's literally the only place I've ever seen it.
Tobeck · 1 points · Posted at 22:11:12 on January 10, 2016 · (Permalink)
This is exactly right. As a person who is "hirsute" as described by the doctor who performed surgery on my butt to remove a pilonidal cyst, I can tell you that it is meant to describe something that is not supposed to be that hairy.

I mean, there are some cats that have hair instead of fur. Dogs, too. And the cat was pretty damn fluffy, compared to a lot of cats I've seen. I didn't think the original comment was that bad; it's when he started talking about "teaching opportunities" and "ignoramus" that it turned pompous and annoying and just plain cringey.
[deleted] · 0 points · Posted at 05:02:27 on January 2, 2016 · (Permalink)
Yeah, it generally is used with a sense of unexpected or unusually hairiness. Mostly medically as hirsutism.

From the magical perfectionus, which creates an impeccably hirsute social media comment (such as this) to be admired and gilded by dim witted troglodytes against their better judgment.
It's so over the top that I can't make myself believe it's real - it just hits ALL the right points. Common word explained in historic detail, "i'm not like other people", "teaching moment", etc. It's just too good.

Every English word that you hear about having a Latin plural also has a normal English plural as an acceptable form. Radiuses is also perfectly correct.
I had to run through all of the 'us' words, but you're right! That's strange that it's used so often to seem smart but its not actually correct (barring radius-radii, as shown in the other reply)
"-us" is often 2nd declension, so -i is very often the correct plural. But, you do occasionally get -us that go to -es. Also, it depends on the length of the "u" in -us.
I know, I mean in English. Seems most of our 'us' words have come from Greek, making it 'octopodes' (Greek and also 3rd Dec. Latin) instead of 'octopi' (2nd Dec. Latin)
I don't think "octopodes" would be right though. I had this conversation the other day. It would be like saying "eightfoot" and "eightfeet." Or, what's the plural of "bigfoot"? I mean, I know it's technically "octopodes" but, idk, I feel like it shouldn't be. Ya feel me?
I see what you mean, however the Greeks (and by extension the Romans) didn't make that distinction, as context made it clear what they were talking about. If you say 'I saw both Bigfeet', the person you're talking to will use context to figure out what you meant, as surely as if you had said 'I saw the two things we are discussing'.
It's not so much that as that "ignoramus" isn't even a Latin word, the way "octopus" is Greek. The Latin is "ignarus", so there's no logic to it at all.
I believe "Ignorami" is an attempted reference to the phrase, "Literati," meaning the overly literate or scholarly people of society, from the Latin, "literatus" but this ego justice warrior further proves himself an idiot by the fact that the more obvious, intelligent and sensical turn of phrase would be, "illiterati." Feel free to use it in your day to day, hour by hour, minute by minute, second by second life, if you wish it to be so badly that you make it so.

Yeah I don't even think it's the right usage of the word. Pretty sure loquacious is a term for something that is unusually talkative, not something that normally has speech. Also, idiots don't have locution, they have compulsion.
Ignorami isn't even correct though. Ignoramus comes from the 1st person plural present active indicative of the verb ignore, -are, -avi, -atus, meaning we are ignorant, not from any Latin noun, so the correct plural is ignoramuses.
Close, but "quod" does not mean this, it means "because". "Futue hanc faecem" should be the right translation.
If you want to say "fuck it I can't do this", then it's "futue id, non possum agere hunc". Depending on the gender of what "this" is, "hunc" can be "hanc" or "hoc".
This might not be 100% accurate, I've only taken a year and a half of Latin.

On a similar note,
The standard pluralized form of "octopus" in the English language is "octopuses" /ˈɒktəpʊsɪz/,[10] although the Ancient Greek plural "octopodes" /ɒkˈtɒpədiːz/, has also been used historically.[9] The alternative plural "octopi" — which misguidedly assumes it is a Latin "-us"-word — is considered grammatically incorrect.[11][12][13][14]

It was actually made in response to gender identity politics, by TF2 user Guude. He would spam it in the chat in reference to transgender-related arguments.
When confronted with the concept of genderqueerness, /r/tf2 at large decided that they were akin to attack helicopters. According to the poll makers, the majority of the 3% of "others" ended up being people whose first reaction to a type-in box for gender was to put "attack helicopter".
It actually lines up perfectly with other kin stuff, so agree to disagree.
Kelsig · 3 points · Posted at 13:01:49 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
Besides the whole "sexually identify thing"
It's not agreeing to disagree. You're ignoring facts because they would go against your preconceived notions. Did you even look at that /r/tf2 thread? There were hundreds of people directly conflating gender queerness with being an attack helicopter. There is no disagreeing with that. But go ahead and keep your head in the sand, don't wanna shake up your world view.
There were more people ironically using attack helicopter to mock non-binary gender identities than women on that subreddit.
No, it's an agree to disagree thing, I see and understand it as making fun of otherkin, not that is that far from how some trans people are as well. You heard of that trans guy who thinks he's a 6 year old girl and abandoned his family? yeah, he's just as crazy as any otherkin, we can agree to disagree.

No because I don't hang around alt-right echo chambers, and that's not transgenderism, that's a personality disorder.
It's a mental disorder no matter how you look at it, gender dismorphia, etc.
Kelsig · 2 points · Posted at 13:15:25 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
DSM-V does not consider standard gender dysmorphia a mental disorder, but rather a mental condition that can cause distress, no different than mental conditions like homosexuality.
So according to lead medical doctors around the world, it is in fact not a mental disorder.
It actually did at one point but there was such a backlash that they removed it. I'm on mobile so I can't look for proof right now. But I was on reddit discussing and mocking the whole situation, so I remember vivedly.
Kelsig · 2 points · Posted at 13:21:26 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
DSM is not going to change something entirely based on backlash. It's a life saving medical publication. Get real. Don't link me to some reactionary TiA thread BS.
That's different, you can be gay and your brain still aligns with your body. With trans*, your mind doesn't align with your body, so you "identify" as something that your body isn't. Whether gender dismorphia is a disorder or simply a condition, it's not something to be envied, it's something that takes therapy and or surgery to remedy. Trans people tend to have other mental issues, etc.
You don't want to be trans, you want your body to align with your mind and anyone arguing otherwise is ignorant.
Kelsig · 2 points · Posted at 22:21:23 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
Just like with homosexuality, the only distress comes from social pressure, and is not an inherent part of the condition. Why do you think you know what you're talking about.
it's something that takes therapy and or surgery to remedy.
What? Therapy is damaging and about to illegal, and SRS is optional and by far a rather unimportant part of the transitioning. HRT is the best, safest, and least complicated sex transition.
Huh? Most of the distress comes from having the mind of one sex and the body of another. You know, the dismorphia. And when I said therapy, I meant hormone therapy.
Kelsig · 1 points · Posted at 23:26:29 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
No. The distress comes from social pressure due to others not accepting them. There is nothing about gender dysphoria that inherently makes patients unable to function on a daily basis.
Now you're putting words in my mouth, I never said anything about being unable to function. I did say that trans* tend to have a higher rate of accompanying mental disorders. Not always, of course, but the stats are there. Anecdotally I've met some perfectly normal trans* in my time, but I've also encountered some fucking nutcases... people truly off their rocker, psychos, whackos, you know, crazy people.
Kelsig · 1 points · Posted at 23:36:39 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)

That's the definition of a mental disorder. Something that decreased day-to-day function.
I did say that trans* tend to have a higher rate of accompanying mental disorders.
We have no evidence of the cause of this. Poor people also have a higher rate of mental disorders. Is being poor a mental disorder?
Kelsig · 1 points · Posted at 23:56:15 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
Either way, being trans* is not to be envied, it's an abnormal condition, and I wouldn't wish it on anybody.
I don't disagree
The [DSM V] doesn't align with your definition...
It actually does. Check number 5 and 3. They just put more description and emphasised constraints. The only distress caused by gender dysphoria is cultural conflict.
It actually does. Check number 5 and 3. They just put more description and emphasised constraints. The only distress caused by gender dysphoria is cultural conflict.
It's a small, and non vital part of the definition. You can have a disorder and still function day to day. Mental disorders aren't the only thing that can impair function. A missing limb isn't a mental disorder. Your definition hinges on solely the "functioning" aspect. I personally know people with mental disorders who still function on the daily.
I'm sorry, but over and over again, you're wrong. But we can agree to disagree on that, my friend.
Kelsig · 1 points · Posted at 00:07:36 on December 30, 2015 · (Permalink)
The consequences of which are clinically significant distress (e.g., a painful symptom) or disability (i.e., impairment in one or more important areas of functioning)
Gender dysphoria, without cultural conflict, does not evoke clinically significant distress, and is obviously not a disability.
Are you kidding me? Having the mind of one person, and the body of another is incredibly distressing, that's why HRT and SRS are a thing that people choose. Trans* people express great relief upon receiving these medical treatments and if it didn't cause distress, there wouldn't be medical procedures designed to cure it.
People pay thousands for these treatments...
Kelsig · 1 points · Posted at 00:29:56 on December 30, 2015 · (Permalink)
I've already given you the study that shows that distress disappears when there's no social pressure
Just because there are treatments doesn't mean it is a mental disorder
Agreed, but that doesn't mean not having the body of the gender you identify with isn't distressing. In a world where trans people are completely tolerated and not "othered", many would still feel some distress and desire a transition.
A man's brain with a severe lack of testosterone often gives way to depression and other associated mental conditions. This is true in normal everyday men and it's even more true for trans men in women's bodies.
In women, high testosterone can lead to depression. So, a woman's mind in a man's body (which produces like 20x more T than a female body) is often miserable.

Me: wow, your cat looks really hirsute!
Friend: what the fuck is hirsute?
Me: it means shaggy and hairy.
friend: why didnt you just say that?
Me: because im a pretentious fuckwit and i want everyone else to think im smarter than them.
friend: oh.

They suck at life at most things and mommy, to prevent her kid from /wristing irl, showered the poor bastard with praise of his brilliance. Kid then becomes delusional and clings to his one positive defining trait--his "intelligence". Now he gets to be a poor misunderstood "brilliant" soul among the sea of ignorant plebs rather than cope with his personal life failures.
The thing about having a big vocabulary is it's good to have. But in my opinion it's only good to have a big vocabulary with multiple words that mean the same thing. "Delicious" vs "tastes very good" or "difficult" instead of "hard/very hard". It sounds better to use the other words instead of saying very before stuff and adding some different but regular words. When you use stupid words that literally no one knows, you sound like you're trying to impress someone, and you have to explain stuff.
Tl;dr: use big vocabulary to spice up how you talk, not to confuse people who don't know what your stupid word means.
I am not like all the other dimwits who have a knee-jerk "ZOMG THAT IS A CUTE KITTY!" reaction. I see that cat, and my first thought is to comment on its appearance (but not in the way the ignorami do)
So instead of saying the cat is cute he instead says "der it flufy"
The best/worst thing about this is he talks about being happy to teach people the word, yet he literally just says that it's a Latin word. No actual definition or meaning.

ignorami
The plural of ignoramus is ignoramuses not ignorami. In Latin, ignoramus is a verb, not a noun so it has the -es plural form.
Thank him for allowing his ignorance to be turned in to a teaching opportunity. Then, by your grace, allow him to use the correct plural form in his day to day life.
Fight his cringe with that and his fucktarded head will explode.
I remember when I learned what hirsute meant. I'm the days of AOL free internet discs, my buddy asked me what I thought of some pictures he had saved on a 3.5" floppy. He loaded it and two folders populated. One was titled celebrities and one titled hirsute. He opened hirsute and began clicking through the pictures of women with leg/arm/arm pit/facial hair that would rival a lumberjack. The worst was this wrinkly alligator skinned lady with a nearly unfathomable amount of pubic hair and a sloppy gaping red maw where her naughty bits were supposed to be. That image has haunted my mind for the last 18 or so years.
Word-obsessed people are the worst. They love to drop big words and go on about how many words they know, but somehow ignore how arbitrary and subject to change language is.
gnovos · 1 points · Posted at 21:17:27 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)
I already learned that word on pornhub, but thanks.
And yet, after reading this post, I came across this passage in Infinite Jest - a book I purchased yesterday - and was able to appreciate this sentence I read a few moments ago that I would have normally went over my head....proof
"This turned out to have been a large patch of mold -- Orin posits from some dark corner of the Weston home's basement, which was warm from the furnace and flooded every spring. The patch itself he describes as horrific: darkly green, glossy, vaguely hirsute, speckled with parasitic fungal points of yellow, orange, red."
I mean, if we're getting technical, that was the wrong word to use. It refers specially to hair, and not fur. And before anyone comes in and said some breeds of cats have hair and not fur, I know, but this isn't one of them.
Guy is a failure troll, the saddest kind of troll.

Unless you speak french, then hirsute is bland, and shaggy more fun.
Would that be a shaggy cat story
Or a hirsute dog?
Of should it now be a hersute cat if she's female you sexist pig (or cochon!!!)
This feels like next level verysmart, because not only does he use an obscure word to appear more intelligent than others, he uses it to bait a question and then "educate" everyone and show off even more.

I was all prepared to defend the person for using that word, but it turns out that the word really wasn't the problem. It's not reading as tongue in cheek, either. Fuck that person.
I don't know why. Maybe it's because I've been watching too much of the office. Or because hirshute looks like Shrute. But I read that comment in Dwights voice and it was hilarious. I realized my mistake and now I can't unhear it that way, also it's amazing!
This is so bad everyone is giving OP a pass for just outright using the jocosity of the kid as the title of the post.
Jocosity - from the late 17th century Latin, derived from jocosus. Meaning "playful or humorous". Please feel free to use this word as you wish: I herby grant you free reign of the usage of this word for perpetuity.
Next time you see jocosity, you will recognize it impetuously. You're welcome :)

Didn't anyone catch that his explanation of the word is almost a duplicate of a reddit post? I think it was from yesterday I read it in the comments of a front page post. Sorry I can't find it but trust me...this is 99% someone else's words. The difference is that it is a cat in FB. I think it was something else in the post I read...like a sloth, dog, or horse.

I love that after 11 hours he still doesn't have a single like...
You know, he could have stopped at the definition and nobody would have hated him. "I take it you're not familiar with that word" is kind of 'no shit', but it isn't the worst of that comment.
Really, it's the phrasing, and length Red goes to to lord his knowledge over everyone else that makes this cringe-worthy. If they had just made a comment like, "it means unusually hairy," it wouldn't be nearly that bad. I'm pretty sure we've all used a word at some point, and waited like a coiled tiger for someone to ask about it.
JJCPMA · 1 points · Posted at 16:30:58 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)
There's nothing wrong with the word 'hirsute'. But when the person questioned it, OP should have just translated it as 'hairy' rather than taking the opportunity to show off how much of an idiot he or she is.
?
That was the whole point of his post; telling them the definition of the word while trying to make them feel stupid.
He literally said:
"Comes from the Latin "Hirsutus" (Shaggy, Hairy)."
not obscure (at least not to anyone who reads a lot...writers/authors LOVE using such words LOL) but usually unnecessary. Why say hirsute when hairy will do, unless you're trying to front
That's true I guess. I always thought of hirsute as the step beyond hairy but it turns out it is the same really. I guess OP really did teach me something!

Yeah I don't even think it's the right usage of the word. Pretty sure hirsute is a term for something that is unusually hairy, not something that normally has hair. Also, cats don't have hair, they have fur.

Bear in mind he also used it incorrectly. A very hairy man or woman would be more appropriate. (Like one of those dudes who can take his shirt off and look like he's wearing a sweater) All cats are fuzzy anyway.
TheShadowKick · 12 points · Posted at 22:19:12 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)
TheShadowKick · 3 points · Posted at 08:26:23 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
It is super pretentious. And yes, common usage usually trumps dictionaries. Dictionaries are just descriptions of how people use words, and sometimes they don't keep up with shifts in language. Especially on words that don't get much common usage.

TheOmnipotentTruth · 68 points · Posted at 15:53:01 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)

JustaMammal · 84 points · Posted at 17:56:36 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)*
Here's the thing. You said a "cats have hair."
It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?
Octopus_Tetris · 23 points · Posted at 19:59:19 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)

In essence, we have selected for the trait of hirsutism in wool sheep, but it also arises pathologically. This is a horse with equine Cushings syndrome, which classically presents with hirsutism.
oldnick53 · 1 points · Posted at 23:46:12 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)
Actually hirsute would imply unruly or unkempt hair or fur. This cat is somewhat hirsute

FearFailure · 1 points · Posted at 13:22:18 on January 14, 2016 · (Permalink)
It's perfectly accurate here. I'm not sure I agree that the cat is unusually hairy, but it's certainly not a bizarre claim.
Strazdas1 · 1 points · Posted at 11:45:56 on January 27, 2016 · (Permalink)
To be fair, i would call the cat in the picture unusually hairy. Thats probably because 99% of cats here are around the hair length of this

I had to run through all of the 'us' words, but you're right! That's strange that it's used so often to seem smart but its not actually correct (barring radius-radii, as shown in the other reply)
From_the_Underground · 2 points · Posted at 19:51:37 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)
"-us" is often 2nd declension, so -i is very often the correct plural. But, you do occasionally get -us that go to -es. Also, it depends on the length of the "u" in -us.
Canopenerdude · 2 points · Posted at 20:42:42 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)
I know, I mean in English. Seems most of our 'us' words have come from Greek, making it 'octopodes' (Greek and also 3rd Dec. Latin) instead of 'octopi' (2nd Dec. Latin)
From_the_Underground · 1 points · Posted at 03:12:19 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
I don't think "octopodes" would be right though. I had this conversation the other day. It would be like saying "eightfoot" and "eightfeet." Or, what's the plural of "bigfoot"? I mean, I know it's technically "octopodes" but, idk, I feel like it shouldn't be. Ya feel me?
Canopenerdude · 0 points · Posted at 03:25:47 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)

That's it? At the one I use to work at we had bbq, sweet and sour, ranch, honey mustard, hot mustard (added about 6 months after), habenero ranch, and buffalo. There also used to be a sweet chili sauce. Honey is with the breakfast stuff but you can still request it.

You're welcome, try not to be such an ignorami
AleaLudo · 16 points · Posted at 21:21:12 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)
Actually, one cannot be "an ignorami" as "ignorami" is the correct plural form of "ignoramus," given that it is Latin.
"Ignoramus" comes from the Latin for "ignorant person," which clearly anyone who doesn't know Latin is.
My first thought isn't to insult you, though, but rather to educate you. Feel free to use proper Latin plurals in your day to day life now.
I know Latin.
SwagDrag1337 · 3 points · Posted at 17:19:15 on March 4, 2016 · (Permalink)
Ignorami isn't even correct though. Ignoramus comes from the 1st person plural present active indicative of the verb ignore, -are, -avi, -atus, meaning we are ignorant, not from any Latin noun, so the correct plural is ignoramuses.
certamen_struggle · 7 points · Posted at 21:53:06 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)
KnastretAvGrus · 2 points · Posted at 23:42:02 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)

I take it you are not familiar with that word. It comes from the Latin word embigne ("expand , make larger") I am not all the other dimwits who have a knee-jerk "ZOMG GROW" reaction. I see a an object embiggening and my first thought is to comment on it's expansion (but not in the way ignorami do) And then I realized this would be an excellent teaching opportunity. Thanks to me, you now know the meaning of what it means to be embiggened, and can use it in your day to day life if you wish.

For example, the other day I inadvertently found myself in r/Futurama after clicking on a post that made its way to r/all. or ostracized; if you were suddenly turned into an ostrich, you might not feel welcomed by your community either.

It was actually made in response to gender identity politics, by TF2 user Guude. He would spam it in the chat in reference to transgender-related arguments.
Take a look at this
When confronted with the concept of genderqueerness, /r/tf2 at large decided that they were akin to attack helicopters. According to the poll makers, the majority of the 3% of "others" ended up being people whose first reaction to a type-in box for gender was to put "attack helicopter".
wahmifeels · 1 points · Posted at 12:31:59 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)

Kelsig · 2 points · Posted at 12:34:29 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
tl;dr:
has nothing to do with otherkin, it has to do with mocking non-cis gender identities
wahmifeels · 1 points · Posted at 12:58:00 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
It actually lines up perfectly with other kin stuff, so agree to disagree.
Kelsig · 3 points · Posted at 13:01:49 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
Besides the whole "sexually identify thing"
It's not agreeing to disagree. You're ignoring facts because they would go against your preconceived notions. Did you even look at that /r/tf2 thread? There were hundreds of people directly conflating gender queerness with being an attack helicopter. There is no disagreeing with that. But go ahead and keep your head in the sand, don't wanna shake up your world view.
There were more people ironically using attack helicopter to mock non-binary gender identities than women on that subreddit.
wahmifeels · 1 points · Posted at 13:04:03 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
No, it's an agree to disagree thing, I see and understand it as making fun of otherkin, not that is that far from how some trans people are as well. You heard of that trans guy who thinks he's a 6 year old girl and abandoned his family? yeah, he's just as crazy as any otherkin, we can agree to disagree.
Kelsig · 2 points · Posted at 13:04:58 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
There is no reason to believe it's making fun of otherkin besides the fact that it makes you feel better
No because I don't hang around alt-right echo chambers, and that's not transgenderism, that's a personality disorder.
wahmifeels · 1 points · Posted at 13:11:49 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
It's a mental disorder no matter how you look at it, gender dismorphia, etc.
Kelsig · 2 points · Posted at 13:15:25 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
DSM-V does not consider standard gender dysmorphia a mental disorder, but rather a mental condition that can cause distress, no different than mental conditions like homosexuality.
So according to lead medical doctors around the world, it is in fact not a mental disorder.
wahmifeels · 1 points · Posted at 13:18:39 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
It actually did at one point but there was such a backlash that they removed it. I'm on mobile so I can't look for proof right now. But I was on reddit discussing and mocking the whole situation, so I remember vivedly.
Kelsig · 2 points · Posted at 13:21:26 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)

You can read DSM-V right now, not only do they not classify it as one, they explicitly tell readers (presumed to be doctors) to not think it's one.

Same with homosexuality. So?
wahmifeels · 1 points · Posted at 22:15:09 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
What? Therapy is damaging and about to illegal, and SRS is optional and by far a rather unimportant part of the transitioning. HRT is the best, safest, and least complicated sex transition.
wahmifeels · 1 points · Posted at 23:17:38 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
There is nothing about gender dysphoria that inherently makes patients unable to function on a daily basis.
wahmifeels · 1 points · Posted at 23:34:52 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
Now you're putting words in my mouth, I never said anything about being unable to function. I did say that trans* tend to have a higher rate of accompanying mental disorders. Not always, of course, but the stats are there. Anecdotally I've met some perfectly normal trans* in my time, but I've also encountered some fucking nutcases... people truly off their rocker, psychos, whackos, you know, crazy people.
Kelsig · 1 points · Posted at 23:36:39 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
That's the definition of a mental disorder. Something that decreased day-to-day function.
We have no evidence of the cause of this. Poor people also have a higher rate of mental disorders. Is being poor a mental disorder?
wahmifeels · 1 points · Posted at 23:43:55 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)*
Either way, being trans* is not to be envied, it's an abnormal condition, and I wouldn't wish it on anybody.
EDIT: The dsm v definition is here:
https://www.saybrook.edu/newexistentialists/posts/05-11-12
Doesn't align with your definition...
Kelsig · 1 points · Posted at 23:56:15 on December 29, 2015 · (Permalink)
I don't disagree
It actually does. Check number 5 and 3. They just put more description and emphasised constraints. The only distress caused by gender dysphoria is cultural conflict.
wahmifeels · 1 points · Posted at 00:05:09 on December 30, 2015 · (Permalink)
Good, then we can agree to disagree.
Gender dysphoria, without cultural conflict, does not evoke clinically significant distress, and is obviously not a disability.
wahmifeels · 1 points · Posted at 00:13:59 on December 30, 2015 · (Permalink)
Are you kidding me? Having the mind of one person, and the body of another is incredibly distressing, that's why HRT and SRS are a thing that people choose. Trans* people express great relief upon receiving these medical treatments and if it didn't cause distress, there wouldn't be medical procedures designed to cure it.
People pay thousands for these treatments...
Kelsig · 1 points · Posted at 00:29:56 on December 30, 2015 · (Permalink)
I've already given you the study that shows that distress disappears when there's no social pressure
Just because there are treatments doesn't mean it is a mental disorder
wahmifeels · 1 points · Posted at 00:34:40 on December 30, 2015 · (Permalink)
Your own study says lack of medical transition plays a significant role, silly.
Kelsig · 1 points · Posted at 01:06:34 on December 30, 2015 · (Permalink)
Well sure, but without cultural conflict there would be no pressure to not transition
Remember, people with gender dysphoria are raised as the wrong gender. They want to become the correct gender.
wahmifeels · 2 points · Posted at 01:18:56 on December 30, 2015 · (Permalink)
Agreed, but that doesn't mean not having the body of the gender you identify with isn't distressing. In a world where trans people are completely tolerated and not "othered", many would still feel some distress and desire a transition.
A man's brain with a severe lack of testosterone often gives way to depression and other associated mental conditions. This is true in normal everyday men and it's even more true for trans men in women's bodies.
In women, high testosterone can lead to depression. So, a woman's mind in a man's body (which produces like 20x more T than a female body) is often miserable.

Now excuse me for snooping, but at least I don't get "offended" over objectively trivial things, but instead by things I perceive as actually harming marginalized individuals.

Only stupid people think that knowing some obscure thing that other people don't know makes you smarter than others. It's a tactic I've seen dumb people use a lot to make themselves feel intelligent.

TL;DR: Do not Google hirsute women

"This turned out to have been a large patch of mold -- Orin posits from some dark corner of the Weston home's basement, which was warm from the furnace and flooded every spring. The patch itself he describes as horrific: darkly green, glossy, vaguely hirsute, speckled with parasitic fungal points of yellow, orange, red."

Goes to Thesaurus.com and enters the word "fluffy".
Sees the word "hirsute" for the first time.
"That cat is quite hirsute!"
"Oh you've never heard of that word? You must be some kind of moron."

There's nothing wrong with the word 'hirsute'. But when the person questioned it, OP should have just translated it as 'hairy' rather than taking the opportunity to show off how much of an idiot he or she is.

That was the whole point of his post; telling them the definition of the word while trying to make them feel stupid.

"Comes from the Latin "Hirsutus" (Shaggy, Hairy)."

earthgarden · 2 points · Posted at 20:21:36 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)
not obscure (at least not to anyone who reads a lot...writers/authors LOVE using such words LOL) but usually unnecessary. Why say hirsute when hairy will do, unless you're trying to front
scottyb83 · 1 points · Posted at 20:48:13 on December 28, 2015 · (Permalink)
That's true I guess. I always thought of hirsute as the step beyond hairy but it turns out it is the same really. I guess OP really did teach me something!
