Oh, I agree that not all tea needs milk. I've been enjoying some orange jaipur recently, and I certainly wouldn't sully that with udder juice, but a bog standard cuppa of English breakfast tea just feels incomplete without milk in it. And some Taiwanese-style super-milky taro bubble tea is mighty tasty. Agree with you on not adding sugar though; unnecessarily splashing that in your tea several times a day is like bending over in front of diabetes' raging death boner and saying "be gentle" with a smirk on your face that suggests your wanting just the opposite.

As a kid I always tried to 'fix' my tea with milk and/or sugar, but I think when the tea is too bitter, it just adds a sweet flavour to it but still tastes just as bitter to me. Better to get the timing right or try a sweeter first flush, that's what I realized as an adult (though I prefer a stronger second flush now).

The announcer was 100% absolutely commenting that he, Michael Phelps, 'still needs to learn not to run on the greens.' There is no question that the comment was directed squarely at Michael Phelps, and while high praise and 'cherish the moment' sentiment was much more important to the announcer, the comment was not merely to inform viewers of golf norms.

Golf actually. Dude is a 26 handicap, which is pretty awful. He barely breaks 100 on a regular basis. If he is passionate about golf, he has all the time and access in the world to get better relatively quickly.
good thing it wasn't 13, because if it was there's some rule in golf where if the ft it makes it from is divisible by the seconds it was televised its immediately disqualified from counting as anything.
It looks like the guy has multiple balls next to him so it probably wasn't during a real round of golf. OPs is probably the record in a tournament round or something.
Probably rolling them the balls so he can use the roll patterns for broadcasting. It's common for them to throw balls around on the greens for the holes they're assigned.
Also the guy putting is probably the best golf short game instructor in the world.

Dave Pelz is one of the best short game teachers in the world. He was probably making some instructional video about lag putting and just happened to make one. Not to be discounted, but he was probably just messing around. Phelps on the other hand was playing in a pro-am. I'm not saying that he wasn't messing around, but there's something to be said for making that putt during an actual round vs making that putt during a practice session.

No, he didn't need the flag to be removed. If you look closely you can see that he is not on the green but rather the fairway (slightly higher grass). You only get a penalty if you make it in the cup with the flag still in when putting from the green.
You're totally correct about the rule.. But that begs the question.. Does this count as longest put? If he hit from the fairway technically it's an approach, even if he used his putter.
edit: to clarify, it is a putt in the sense that he used a putter but as far as official scoring and statistics goes, it is a stroke from the fairway not a putt.
Had he been on the green when he hit the putt there would be a caddy holding the flag (so Phelps could see where the hole is) and removing it if there is a chance the ball would hit it.
He hit this shot from the fairway though so it is not necessary.

The underlying philosophy of golf is that man made objects (obviously excluding the golf course itself) should have very little effect on the course of play. The flag stick rule is something of balance of that. You can't have the 2 shot penalty for anyone hitting it because you can hit it from a long ways away. Likewise, you don't want people using it as an aide.
So, the rule is it must be pulled while on the green.
You can hit a putter off the tee box. That doesn't make it a putt. In golf, it doesn't matter what club you use. If you are off the green you are not putting.
You two are talking about the difference between the common definition of a putt and the formal statistical definition. Sure, this was a "putt from off the green," but it wouldn't be recorded in any record book as a putt. Similarly, if you used a wedge on the green (like Robert Streb did earlier this season), it would be recorded as a putt.

This is from the film Dawn of the Dead, the 2004 remake of the 1978 George A. Romero classic. The actor is Ty Burrell. Funnily, up until Modern Family, I had only seen him in Dawn of the Dead, where he plays a total asshole of a character. You have to take the flagstick out when you're on the putting green. If you don't, and the ball goes in or hits the flagstick, it's a 2 stroke penalty.
And /u/Colin_Bomber_Harris is correct. If you're not on the putting green it's technically not a putt, even if you use your putter.

It's hard to tell as there isn't a really obvious difference in shades of green but it looks like he's standing on the same turf as his bag is standing on and it would be very poor etiquette to have your bag standing on the green. Also I don't believe any televised pro-am would have someone putting without a caddy tending the flag

If it were skill I'd expect him to duplicate the putt a certain amount of time in a set amount of attempts, but I doubt he could duplicate this given as many attempts as he wants.
Make % from that distance for a tour pro is a fraction of a percent. Very much luck. Although guys do pitch in from that distance fairly often so the result can be recreated fairly often by highly skilled players.
I'm not really a golfer but I suspect most pros are going to be a lot more accurate chipping from 50 yards away. Pros make shots from further away all the time, they're just using different clubs.

If I didn't see that correctly and he actually is on the green, then he just got a 2 stroke penalty for hitting the flag.
It's not the type of club you use, but the circumstances for the shot that define what it is. E.g. you can make a putt with a driver if you like. It's still a putt and not suddenly a drive.
I'm not sure if he was on the green or off the green. Had he been on the green and failed to remove the pin that would be a 2-stroke penalty, had he been off the green that would not be considered a put but a chip in.

If after all strokes after the ball first comes to rest on the green are considered putts regardless of the club used to hit the ball, or if the ball remains on the green. Oh, I agree that not all tea needs milk. I've been enjoying some orange jaipur recently, and I certainly wouldn't sully that with udder juice, but a bog standard cuppa of English breakfast tea just feels incomplete without milk in it. And some Taiwanese-style super-milky taro bubble tea is mighty tasty. Agree with you on not adding sugar though; unnecessarily splashing that in your tea several times a day is like bending over in front of diabetes' raging death boner and saying "be gentle" with a smirk on your face that suggests your wanting just the opposite.

As a kid I always tried to 'fix' my tea with milk and/or sugar, but I think when the tea is too bitter, it just adds a sweet flavour to it but still tastes just as bitter to me. Better to get the timing right or try a sweeter first flush, that's what I realized as an adult (though I prefer a stronger second flush now).

There is no question that the comment was directed squarely at Michael Phelps, and while high praise and 'cherish the moment' sentiment was much more important to the announcer, the comment was not merely to inform viewers of golf norms.

Dave Pelz is one of the best short game teachers in the world. He was probably making some instructional video about lag putting and just happened to make one. Not to be discounted, but he was probably just messing around. Phelps on the other hand was playing in a pro-am. I'm not saying that he wasn't messing around, but there's something to be said for making that putt during an actual round vs making that putt during a practice session.

No, he didn't need the flag to be removed. If you look closely you can see that he is not on the green but rather the fairway (slightly higher grass). You only get a penalty if you make it in the cup with the flag still in when putting from the green.

Had he been on the green when he hit the putt there would be a caddy holding the flag (so Phelps could see where the hole is) and removing it if there is a chance the ball would hit it.

The underlying philosophy of golf is that man made objects (obviously excluding the golf course itself) should have very little effect on the course of play. The flag stick rule is something of balance of that. You can't have the 2 shot penalty for anyone hitting it because you can hit it from a long ways away. Likewise, you don't want people using it as an aide.
So, the rule is it must be pulled while on the green.

You have to take the flagstick out when you're on the putting green. If you don't, and the ball goes in or hits the flagstick, it's a 2 stroke penalty.
And /u/Colin_Bomber_Harris is correct. If you're not on the putting green it's technically not a putt, even if you use your putter.

Pretty sure he's just on the fairway maybe 6' short of the green. It's hard to tell as there isn't a really obvious difference in shades of green but it looks like he's standing on the same turf as his bag is standing on and it would be very poor etiquette to have your bag standing on the green. Also I don't believe any televised pro-am would have someone putting without a caddy tending the flag

Make % from that distance for a tour pro is a fraction of a percent. Very much luck. Although guys do pitch in from that distance fairly often so the result can be recreated fairly often by highly skilled players.

He's off the green, technically that's a chip shot, not a putt.
If I didn't see that correctly and he actually is on the green, then he just got a 2 stroke penalty for hitting the flag.
It's not the type of club you use, but the circumstances for the shot that define what it is. E.g. you can make a putt with a driver if you like. It's still a putt and not suddenly a drive.

Reasons why j can't take golf seriously as a sport. If the pros can't do that and an athlete from a completely different sport and requires a different skill set can do that, then golf isn't a real sport
