Trying to feed. Crinoids typically do very poorly in home aquariums and are generally a newbie purchase. They don't get enough food and die pretty quickly.
You're assuming that transit is the goal. It's entirely possible that it's feeling EM waves, filtering food, dispersing pheromones, etc. There are lots of movements that animals do that aren't related to transit.
But it is efficient. It accomplishes its purpose to reproduce, which is the reason it still exists. If it had a crippling inefficiency it would've died out. Natural selection.
It's filter feeding. Even if it was ineffective at moving, it's effective at something, because it's still here. Are you expecting everything to be optimized to top effectiveness? That's an unreasonable expectation. It's optimized through the process of natural selection to be effective enough to survive long enough to reproduce. It's not a conscious effort on nature's part, but through natural selection only those effective enough to pass on their genes at a sustainable rate survive. This creepy pink thing obviously did. I'm really not even sure what exactly we're arguing here.
If it was actually that inefficient it wouldn't have survived this long. Mutations are the random part of evolution, natural selection isn't. Whatever it's doing, it's working for the species.
The movements of Feather Stars aren't directed primarily for transit from place to place, but instead to create it's own local microcurrents to facilitate external filter feeding. Sometimes, they will also use this movement to suspend themselves in currents and sail where it may take them.
Just like so many other creatures from the ocean, this is one that should be left there. I'm not against having salt water fish tanks, as a matter of fact I have 3, but this is one that we don't know enough about to take care of properly. I promise that it will die by slowly starving to death. If we, as people who love reef keeping, keep purchasing these animals then they will continue to be collected and killed.

Stunningly inefficient
truthsyoudontlike ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 03:47:09 on November 8, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
The movements of Feather Stars aren't directed primarily for transit from place to place, but instead to create it's own local microcurrents to facilitate external filter feeding. Sometimes, they will also use this movement to suspend themselves in currents and sail where it may take them.
cashcoat ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:43:15 on November 9, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
So they aren't "stunning swimmers!". They are stunning feeders who stunningly sail sometimes.
cdk_aegir ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 22:29:44 on November 7, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Wrong.
cashcoat ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:06:21 on November 8, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Lol, really? It looks like it is barely moving given all the effort.
cdk_aegir ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:51:04 on November 8, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Its intention is not to change its position in the water or transit. It is actually feeding. Quite efficiently.
cashcoat ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:41:59 on November 9, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
So should the title be "Feather stars are stunning feeders!"?
cdk_aegir ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:08:34 on November 9, 2015 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah. The title is certainly misleading. OP likely had no understanding of what was happening, or more likely he reposted this for the karma.
