You're allowed to touch the table, for instance if you fired a forehand and leaned onto the table a bit and your body touched it, or your hitting arm contacted the table after. You're NOT allowed to touch the table with enough force to move it, that's instantly your opponent's point. You're also not allowed to place your offhand on the table, also an immediate loss of point.
I learned this at my cottage up north when after a few beers the table becomes sometimes needed support in the heat of a rally. Especiacially since a lot of the guys are middle aged and ping pong is the extent of their physical activity.
Thought it might have been for show. It didn't really make sense to be a competition. Why would he be smashing it straight back to a guy 2m away from the table instead of either hitting it to the side, or more likely, dropping it gently on the other side with a bit of back spin?
Actually dropping it gently on the other side is really hard and has a high risk of miscalculated due to the spin from the incoming ball and thus hitting into the net. Which is why you see in real competition, most people will just continually smash until the other side messes up. Less risk.
Hahaha no it wouldn't count but did you really think this match was serious? Just two pros having fun.

Reads to me as long as you dont move the table (now what or how far move means is a different story) or touch it with your free hand you're good. Nothing says touching the table at all
No, completely against the rules.It's an exhibition point though, they're not really trying to win the point just entertain the crowd with some wacky stuff.
Although this was an exhibition match, it is legal to touch the table with anything other than your free hand. You can even do a headstand on the table. You can even breakdance on the table. However, you cannot move the surface, and the ref will usually call a violation.
There was a really strange exhibition match, not sure if same one, where the players started rotating around the table, so they ended up playing on each other's side.

If you watch anime Ping Pong The Animation is a very good series on the sport. Even if you aren't an anime fan I would still recommend it. The art style can be a bit off-putting at first. I would suggest the dub. If you have several hours free you can get through it in an afternoon.
I'm feeling a sort of deja vu. This happened already on reddit and I am suspicious that it's the same two account which would imply that it is controlled by one person.
I hate how that gif is actually speeded up a little at the point where he catches the ball and then it goes back to normal. Why do fucking people do that, it's impressive as it is.
American players play in the Japanese league? I'm assuming that writing was japanese. It'd make sense though since there are some players straight from Japan that play in America
I dont follow baseball either but im assuming if the ball is caught on the full the batter is out. The pitcher doesnt usually catch a ball in flight. I mean, im guessing, im Australian so I am just speculating
If the ball is caught before it hits the ground the batter is out. This is called a "comebacker" and more often results in the pitcher getting injured than catching the ball. Pretty spectacular when they do catch it though!

But yes, a ball caught in flight, whether within the field of play our outside the foul lines, catches the batter out. The pitcher is so close to the plate that unless a ball is hit very slow and high, he usually cannot catch it.
So in baseball the goal is to make it around the bases and back to home plate (where you hit the ball) for a point. After the ball is hit, if a fielder (defensive player on the field) catches the ball before it lands on the ground, and is one of the ways to get an out. An out means they can't go any further and have to go back to the dugout and wait for their turn to back again. There are only 3 outs per inning before switching sides and 9 innings per game. A fraction of a second after the batter hits the ball, the pitcher snatches it right out of the air. It happens so fast, no one knows where the ball went.

This used to be a legitimate strategy, most opponents were sharp-eyed enough to notice though. Now it's illegal because you have to serve from a flat palm, so if you're grabbing the ball it's really obvious. Not to mention you have to flatten your palm for the serve.
It was introduced for other reasons. Namely, it was very easy to add difficult (or nearly impossible) to read spin to your serve using your fingers. Most points would only last a few points, and the server always had advantage.
This server advantage is also part of the reason games are now played 2 serves a time to 11 points instead of 5 serves a time to 21.
I know nothing about the rules but that one always seemed weird to me because it bounces only once on the other guys side and then bounces back... doesn't that mean it's still in play?

Lived in China as a kid. In elementary. There was a legend, that the chosen one, will land a "returning dragon ball" where the ping pong bounces backwards after hitting the enemy side once. And that kid will forever be famed as the god.
Having read Prince of Tennis I now know that's merely amateur hour in Japan. Even middle school Japanese students can do that.

I always wondered. If it's so easy can't they do it so when the ball is returning back it hits the net? Instead of going over. Making it a guarantee point.
That a few people had a move with an effect similar to that. The problem was that the opponents would apply some kind of spin sealing that move. Or maybe they would use their own trump card like a power smash or spin that makes it imperceptible or something like that so the ball would be unreturnable and you couldn't use that move.

I actually did this EXACT thing to someone once, back in college. Once, and only once - it was pure luck, a one in a thousand shot. The guy had a similar reaction. Probably the only impressive athletic feat in my entire life :P
Cool game to watch, especially if the players are real good. The park near me set up two permanent outdoor tables and they started attracting some real competitive players. Every time I pass by I stop to look and end up watching for like an hour.
I love how these guys are absolutely athletes at the peak of what the human body is capable of (at least, as long as it pertains to manipulation of a little white ball. But they would absolutely not stick out in (d)a club. These guys are excellent mating material, for reals though!
I did this at my friends gfs house. I told my friend he wouldn't be at me the entire night ( which he didn't win at all). Anyways point of the story is the ball landed on his gf when I did it and it was a waterfall in her pants. ;)
I remember once I went to a ping pong tournament when I was 15 and thought that I would get top 5. I walked out almost as fast as you can say "Ping Pong Champrrrrion!!!" thanks to guys like these.

I dont follow baseball either but im assuming if the ball is caught on the full the batter is out. The pitcher doesnt usually catch a ball in flight. I mean, im guessing, im Australian so I am just speculating

If the ball is caught before it hits the ground the batter is out. This is called a "comebacker" and more often results in the pitcher getting injured than catching the ball. Pretty spectacular when they do catch it though!

But yes, a ball caught in flight, whether within the field of play our outside the foul lines, catches the batter out. The pitcher is so close to the plate that unless a ball is hit very slow and high, he usually cannot catch it.

So in baseball the goal is to make it around the bases and back to home plate (where you hit the ball) for a point. After the ball is hit, if a fielder (defensive player on the field) catches the ball before it lands on the ground, and is one of the ways to get an out. An out means they can't go any further and have to go back to the dugout and wait for their turn to back again. There are only 3 outs per inning before switching sides and 9 innings per game. This used to be a legitimate strategy, most opponents were sharp-eyed enough to notice though. Now it's illegal because you have to serve from a flat palm, so if you're grabbing the ball it's really obvious. Not to mention you have to flatten your palm for the serve.

It was introduced for other reasons. Namely, it was very easy to add difficult (or nearly impossible) to read spin to your serve using your fingers. Most points would only last a few points, and the server always had advantage.
This server advantage is also part of the reason games are now played 2 serves a time to 11 points instead of 5 serves a time to 21.

That a few people had a move with an effect similar to that. The problem was that the opponents would apply some kind of spin sealing that move. Or maybe they would use their own trump card like a power smash or spin that makes it imperceptible or something like that so the ball would be unreturnable and you couldn't use that move.

I remember once I went to a ping pong tournament when I was 15 and thought that I would get top 5. I walked out almost as fast as you can say "Ping Pong Champrrrrion!!!" thanks to guys like these.
