April Fool's Day prank for this sub? Like, on April First, this subreddit goes private and there's some snarky message about needing to be a REAL Redditor to gain access?
Dunno if it's been done in the past since I wasn't subscribed here last year, but it sounds like it could be an amusing meta-joke for the sub.
this is why ill never understand why people want to prop up the coal industry!
if they actually cared about the workers, theyd push to retrain them for other jobs, so these people dont have to do decades of backbreaking labor, only to die of mesothelioma at 52 years old. no one should have to sacrifice their well-being for menial wages.
It's a joke about the sketchy lawyers who advertise on TV by saying things like "if you or a loved one suffer from mesothelioma, you may be entitled to financial compensation."

I get the joke but let's not blame the lawyers who are recovering for these folks. They're making a shit ton of money but if that's what the system needs to push back again the actual problem, sure.
As someone who lives in coal country, while your idea of retraining sounds grand, youโre underestimating that many of them would not leave their hometown in order to find other work. Sad but accurate.
I live in one and want to live here... I am as referring to the fact that coal miners donโt have a lot of job opportunities outside of what they do unless theyโre willing to move.

Mesothelioma is an absetos-related cancer though, you might be thinking of Black Lung disease.
Backlung is rare, particularly when you follow ventilation rules and it doesn't show up anymore till your kids are already well out of college. Also, why would you pay money for your kids not have jobs, when you could get them jobs in the mine.
mmuncy09 ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 17:25:07 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
LOL, what mine are you working at that follows the vent plan when inspectors are around? Not to sound like a dick but seriously, I've worked in the mines over 7 years and have never had a job that cared about the air/. I did a lung capacity test that showed I have the lungs of a 41 year old. I was 26 when I took the test.
When inspectors aren't around i suppose
you mean. Mines don't follow ventilation plans workers do. If a continuous miner operator gets blacklung because he didn't follow ventilation plan as I'd his miner's right, who's fault is that?
I
Just to add to your first point. I'm a science teacher and sometime, I have older students going back to school after having some kids and working some part-time jobs until their children start school. Mostly women. A lot of them drops after a single semester of a ~3-years program. For various reasons.
First, it puts stress on the relationship with your partner. Now, you have to go to school in the day, do homeworks, lab reports and stuff in the evening and in the weekends. You can't help as much with chores as before and you have to sometime get away from your home to study in a silent place (kids are noisy). So, both partners are going to put in a lot more work because he'll have to pick up what you've left.
Secondly, you lag behind your classmates. You still have more responsabilities than them even if your partner is helping at home, and it's been a while since you've learned anything new so you're kind of rusty in that area. What did you learn in your math class 10 years ago? Well, it's far away and you didn't pay attention in math back then, so you need to re-learn that thing very quickly while you're already struggling to learn what you're seeing right now. And you don't have time to learn everything perfectly, because that would need a lot more of study. That will lead to some problems later on, but anyway.
Third, you don't know anyone and are out-of-phase on current memes and games, so you don't automatically fit right in, so it's harder to find a suitable lab partner.
What plays in their favor though is that sheer motivation they have to go back to school. If you have that kind of drive, you can do it. But you need a very understanding partner and family, good social support and be somewhat good at school.
You just described my current struggle perfectly. I like school and like you said, I'm highly motivated since I have a lot on the line. So it's not all bad, but it feels nice to know some people have empathy.

Damn, you hit the nail on the head. One year of community college went exactly how you explained and now Im back working a field job in this little oil boom were having.
Which is exactly why the US should have more social safety nets and services, so that all people, be it those who have been poor for their entire lives, or those who find themselves at the end of their rope due to macroeconomic changes they couldnโt have predicted, can get assistance to adapt and survive.
Instead right wing politicians, knowing thereโs a large number of people who got stuck in single-commodity local economies, are now suffering due to a changing world, and often never sought higher education or training because they could live financially comfortable lives without it, are manipulating these people into becoming the backbone of regressive politics and policies in the US, and self-sabotaging.
The people who could now most use social services to keep them afloat as they diversify and retrain, are instead digging deeper into their doomed position, and threatening the entire nation.
Rumps02 ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 14:16:15 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Wait a second. You mean to tell me right wing politicians are preventing individuals from diversifying their vocational skills?
Nobody is stopping anyone from achieving whatever it is they want to do. If you live in a town with only one viable financial option, then youโre not trying hard enough. These towns you speak of have hospitals, veterinarian offices, restaurants, grocery stores, and other job opportunities available.
Lack of social services is not the issue here. This is the land of opportunity and there are a ton of feel good stories of people who made their own way by rolling up their sleeves and taking the difficult path to creating their own success.
I am tired of the narrative that it is the fault of someone else (especially politicians) as to why someone chooses to be an 18 year old coal miner. over a struggling minimum wage employee attending night classes at a nearby college. That is short term thinking and someone young and immature who only are counting money in hand now vs. possibly more money in hand in the future. Sure there are outliers where people have to supports a sick family members or have a pregnant 18 year old girlfriend and they need money for doctor bills, but I can debunk that narrative as well. My best friendโs uncle knocked up his 17 year old girlfriend with twins. For six years he worked during the day making very little money and attended night school and received a BS in Business. Got a job working construction and started to learn the business from both sides. He saved money and got a loan and opened his own construction business and is now a very successful local businessman.
I mean, right now if you get laid off in the US you get 6 months of pay, free housing (section 8), free food (SNAP), usually free or discounted transportation (depends on municipality), free healthcare, free phones, free cash (if you have kids through tax credit), free cash through TANF, and subsidized wages if you start to work through EITC.
The majority of government spending in the US is on transfer payments. The government (state, federal, and local) spends more per capita than many european nations. This myth of the US does not have social safety nets is stupid.
US: (36% of gdp is gov ) 57,466.79=20.7 k
UK: (42.1% of gdp is gov)39,899.39= 16.8 k
That is a HUGE difference.
Before you start going on this rant about the military, we can subtract military spending from % of GDP that is gov:
Why is it up to the the government(people) to protect an industry, or somebodies wallet. The only reason we should have a government is to protect peace, not market.
The market(the people) already decided, we don't want your crap service anymore! We want clean energy! and the stubborn fools, they refused, and thus, lost their jobs and lively-hood. Well, boo fucking hoo.
movzx ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:20:22 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
You're working under the premise that every town must exist in perpetuity. That may not be the case. If these towns only exist to support a mine, and that mine goes dry, then these towns don't necessarily need to be propped up until kingdom come.
I partially agree with you. If the town exists only to support a mine, if that mine becomes obsolete, then the town needs to change. They should absolutely not be propped up by trying to keep that mine viable, because thatโs completely unsustainable in the long run.
That being said, the town exists, and if it were โabandonedโ, then all the capital invested in that townโs infrastructure is essentially wasted because it still functions; if the town was completely ruined, then thereโd be no point in staying there, but because it isnโt, the townโs economy will need to change, and to do so, people would need to train for different jobs: jobs that are able to keep the town sustainable in the long run.
Basically, the reason for the townโs existence needs to change, otherwise money used to โcreateโ that town will have been wasted. Investing in that townโs long term sustainability is much cheaper than building a new one.
movzx ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:26:14 on February 3, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
The problem is that these mining towns were built around the mine which means they are in the middle of nowhere.
There aren't going to be any other industries in the area that can support the workforce. You're not really going to get factories that want to open up there because the infrastructure is shit and they'll be away from the shipping and warehouse hubs in the cities. This isn't like Detroit going tits up and us working to bail it out.
You're also assuming we need to build new towns to make up for these lost ones. Why? Again, these towns were built around mines. That is a practical reason to build the town there, but the work opportunities have moved into more concentrated areas that already exist. These people need to move to existing places, not to new places.
These towns are a sunk cost at this point. We invested in them, realized our investment, and no longer need them.
Or to make a comparison:
We had a construction job. We needed a truck for that job, so we bought one. Eventually the construction job was done, we got a new job where we don't need the truck any longer, and that truck is on its last legs anyway. Is it smart to pay for a new engine, transmission, etc for a truck we don't need simply because it was a truck we did need at one point? Not really.
Investing in retraining for people in that town helps them find a new job. The government doesnโt give them the job, it just gives them the ability get that job by teaching them new skills. Not exactly government intervention if itโs the market providing the job.
talk about "it's not that simple" lmao. Retraining for what, you're going to force these people into a career path? You're going to give them limited options of things they might not give two shits about?
So free schooling for people who lose a job because their business went out of business? Hi yes I got fired from my job, 1 free retraining please, government!
talk about "it's not that easy"! LOL. daddy government plwease protect me! I lost my job even though I saw it coming and didn't prepare!
Also, I totally think that if a company goes out of business the employees should be entitled to some kind of subsidized education system, or you know, community colleges could be affordable or something again.
Because if those people are employed, they're paying taxes. If, for example, there were additional student loans and grants specifically for retraining from unemployment, I think it's a wonderful idea. Loans have to be repaid.
You should too. Every person who has a job, and every person who has the slightest bit of post secondary education? They benefit you, and they benefit Society. They pay taxes, and they do their jobs, and while they also contribute to traffic and everything else, SO DO YOU. You should support helping people out of hard times, because those times will come for you, and even if you don't need the assistance, the option for it? That is something I doubt you'll regret.
Um... The paved and lit road outside my house. Paid for by tax dollars. Taxes? Are paid by people with jobs. Not by subsidizing dying industries, or letting people lose their jobs and homes and possibly lives because of the dying industry. Taxes. Money. Is this your language? Money.
Also you haven't provided any evidence to the contrary?
I don't need any evidence because I'm not advocating a stance, just questioning yours. And you didn't provide an argument. In fact I don't find your comments relevance, it was kinda retarded.

Which is exactly why we have safety nets that are taken advantage of every single day. There are families in America who have lived off the government for generations.
People apply for disability for every minor injury and end up getting it because they find some sleazy lawyer who will pull strings to get it approved in exchange for half the disability check each month for a few years.
Kids in poverty can get enough grants to get a four year degree, yet they don't want to. Why would they do that when they can shack up with a single mother in section 8 who receives checks for her kids every month? You are severely underestimating the laziness and lack of desire to succeed that cripples any kind of social "safety net".
Retraining often times isn't free nor is it nearby. Finding paid retraining is even rarer. It's highly unlikely someone can just take several months off of work.
We're talking about the people who would fight government programs to retrain them for free.
โขThere's a high likelihood of having to move, which is expensive and not every company assists in the process, especially lower paying jobs. It's easier to do so if you're single, but if you have a family and you've only lived in one place your whole life it's an entirely different story
Lots of people have to move for work. Suck it up because coal is dying.
Familiarity. It's a paycheck and kids right out of high school can start making some decent money. People generally don't like change.
If someone is offering you free training for a job that's a billion times less likely to give you cancer and otherwise destroy your body, and you say no because you've been brainwashed by right wing propaganda, I can't really feel that bad for you.
movzx ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 04:21:10 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Not would fight. Did fight. That is part of the solution the Dems had for the coal miner issue. Retrain those folks, at a cost to the taxpayers, into an industry that wasn't dying.
The whole "they'd have to move!" thing really rustles my jimmies given the attitudes the right wing had about progressives looking for work not a few years prior. "Can't find work? It's your fault! You're not doing whatever it takes! muh bootstraps!" Now they can't find a coal miner job in their shit town paying 80k/yr with no education required? "I need my government handouts!"
That requires actual skill. B4 downvotes am miner.

The government is offering free retraining lessons in certain areas, and some companies will pay for retraining. I tried learning how to program as a hobby , and I couldn't get no matter what (it was like learning a foreign language, which was my worst subject in school), so I understand that aspect being impossible for many people. That's why I mentioned green energy, it's mostly construction, operating machinery, and wiring which (imo) is much easier.
CashCop ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 03:38:04 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

But yeah holy shit programming

I keep hearing green energy pays well, and I've never seen it.
I was going to jump from industrial to green, but after multiple offers to pay me half what I make now and expecting me to stay in a room with a half dozen other dudes instead of being given a per diem, I figured someone else could have it.
The companies that win the contracts to do the installations are largely shady af.
The only real fix for it is stronger labor laws and stricter enforcement of them.
gradeplg ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 02:39:30 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Not really. If you're any good at learning new languages, you can teach yourself programming, and green energy covers a wide variety of jobs. Construction, operating the machinery, and (to a lesser extent) the wiring can be done with retraining/shadowing a mentor.

Sometimes. But thereโs little room for advancement and little job security.
I live in coal, gas and oil country, the great state of Wyoming. I see first hand how people live depending on fossil fuels. Itโs shit, total shit. Hundreds of guys scraping by into their sixties on just enough to pay their rent/mortgage and a 12 pack of beer when they need it. Sure, there are some guys with 20 year old (read:shitty) corvettes from the days of oil booms, but most of the the hands and roughnecks are barely surviving and canโt deal with the myriad health issues that come with that life.
Our community college is full of 40-50 year old former oil/gas/coal guys doing retraining because they were either pushed out due to injury or quit to get a better job to save for retirement.
I get what you're saying entirely, but most, if not all, are NOT making "menial wages". Their pay is pretty high as a function of the danger and environments of the job.
ReaLyreJ ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:25:45 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

BlindBoy ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:08:09 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Because the coal industry is what fuels certain parts of America? If you cut that out, you have just butchered thousands and thousands of jobs. I donโt understand what is so hard for people to understand about this. People work these jobs because they have no other choice. If you destroy the industry, youโre destroying their lives as well.
There is a reason major tech regions push renewable energy while coal and oil regions donโt. The tech regions make bank off of renewable energy (someone has to make solar panels and wind turbines, and itโs generally them). Whatโs funny is that the tech regions are wealthier as is. So basically the wealthy regions want to starve out the poorer ones so that they can make even more money. The rich get richer.

It's not easy to get another job in a coal mining town.
the workers have a will, and I think some of them would be bummed the mines close. So, don't forget to take them into consideration when you think you know best.
You know, I would never work in a coal mine, or an oil field, no matter the cost cause fuck the labor. If everyone was like me, well, nobody would mine coal, bud.
The camaraderie is huge and the hard work is kind of fun and builds teamwork. Like many aspects of a job, you can get used to it.
Some of the more interesting parts of work were watching the older guys roof bolt. Roof bolting can be hell on a person, but if one can learn the machine well, he can make it very easy on himself.
Iโve seen dozens of young, dumb, full of piss-and-vinegar kids get partnered up on a roof bolted with the old veteran and the old guy will look like heโs hardly moving and outright smoke the kids on that machine. Pouring their sweat and energy out trying to move as fast as they can and not keep up with the old guy is a sight to see.
Thereโs tons of great things about it and frankly, most miners wouldnโt want to do any other line of work.
Day shift during the winter time can get a little depressing sometimes. Imagine going underground before daylight and getting back on top after the sun sets. Definitely changes your mood when you donโt see the sun for a week straight
MattcVI ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 09:02:49 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
How does one get into that sort of work? Do I just look for "coal miner" on Indeed
If you go to an area where there are mines you will see ads run in the paper or online. The best bet is to sign up at a local training school/ community college for your โ40 hourโ new miner training and then get with a temporary staffing agency.
Most mines pull their men from temp agencies, work them like slaves for a few months to weed the duds out and hire the good ones.

The thing is, if you are a good/hard worker, every job is tough. You either give 100% or you donโt. I grew up working construction, primarily masonry, with my father and now Iโm a pharmacist. Each job is equally difficult because in each job Iโm trying my absolute best to succeed.

I dunno, I work as a network engineer, which I bust my ass driving a lot, and do my best to kick ass wherever I go, and would agree mostly with your statement, but I work in hospitals, and let me tell you I often feel like I'm an overpaid layabout when I watch nurses at work. Tough takes on such a deeper more psychological inflection when you are watching a nurse in the nicu (neo-natal intensive care unit) rushing to a room with a bunch of alarms and screaming parents. Doctors often have the ability to put a little distance between them and the personal, nurses seem to embrace it. They are all amazing and a little insane and have taken the top spot in my hero pantheon.
I love this. My boyfriend is a construction worker and Iโm an academic. We both have such respect for each otherโs jobs. I always comment on his strong work ethic and how hard he works. He doesnโt feel attractive when he gets home because heโs dirty, but I tell him it just shows how hard he worked that day. And when Iโm stressed about everything I have going on and all my interactions with people and fall asleep at 8:30 pm, he says my job is tiring because I use my mind all day. And when we talk about our diets, he says I should eat more because mental expenditures cost a lot of calories. We both work hard in this life, and we appreciate what the other gives. But I hate seeing him come home sore and injured, and I hope one day it wonโt be so.

I like this, exact same situation.
Cannot tell you how I wish I took school seriously.
Don't get me wrong, I respect all hard working jobs especially construction workers like myself but damn getting up at 5am everyday and shovelling shit 10 hours a day can be rough some times.
I only hope I am smart enough to have a go at tertiary education and "escape" one day if you will haha.
Thank you for this comment. I always find myself whining to myself about greener grasses elsewhere, but I think I'd have the same work concerns anywhere. Makes me appreciate where I am :)
Totally with you on this. Prior to college, I worked in both construction and maintenance. I came home every night physically exhausted and covered in cuts.
I'm now a professional programmer. I can say with honesty that I love my job, but equally, I regularly put in more hours than I've ever put into any other job. In the end, it is even more draining than those physically intensive ones purely because of how much effort I exert on a daily basis.
You're absolutely right, it's about putting in 100%. The activity itself makes little difference, it's all about the resolve.
One of the toughest jobs underground is working on the โbull gangโ. Advancing belt and power to keep the units as close to the coal face as possible.
Ran a bill gang crew for a few years and I wouldnโt wish that job on a prison chain gang.
I still have mad respect for some other professions, especially guys working out in the weather... we donโt have that problem underground.
I've worked everything from concrete and other construction jobs to retail to restaurant work (server, expo, etc) and I'd go back to the construction type jobs but it'll be a cold day in hell before I work in retail or the service industry again. That shit is hell. Respect to the people who can put up with that level of bullshit for any length of time.

Food service job in high school, retail for 5 years. (Part-time during college, full-time after it.)
When I got my first office job, I joked about creating my own version of those cheesy motivational posters for bad days. Mine would have been - Perspective: You could still be working retail.
I got fired from my last job (retail) because one of the managers decided to schedule me for a day outside of my availability then fire me for no call/no show. Less than a month later I got a job in the medical field with starting pay almost double what I was making there after 10 months of being there.
I worked two years in retail before becoming a police officer. There's just nothing like being treated like the lowest of the low. Beyond that, retail is endless, mind numbing work in my experience. Sure I bitch about my job now but I'll never work retail again.
I've been thinking about becoming an officer. I'm currently in EMS and college but it's looking more and more like college isn't the right way for me. Right now it's a toss up between going for paramedic or cop.
I'm a college drop out myself but I would recommend getting your degree. I have a few friends in EMS and honestly here being a medic isn't worth what they're paid. We make way more on the police side and I personally like the job much more than what I've seen for EMS. I know you work alongside PD so I'm sure you've got enough exposure to know, although if you haven't already do a ride along and see if you like it.
My brother is an officer and my mom's a paramedic in my area so I have a pretty decent idea of what to expect. Paramedics around here don't make much in regards to bas pay either but most places around here you have your week pay rate and your weekend pay rate (you make a shitload more on weekends) and you get all the overtime you can handle. As far as college I really don't think it's for me. I've never been good at this blue collar shit and I don't want to sit behind a desk for the rest of my life.
Sounds like you've got quite the stories at the dinner table from both sides. Either job is good man and it caters to that excitement of everyday is a surprise. Hopefully whatever you choose you enjoy man and good luck on the decision.
Actually I'm always thankful I work in an air-conditioned office. But a lot of the guys out there are thankful that they aren't stuck cooped up indoors all day working at a computer under an egotistical manager.
talk to my boss for a grand total of 3 minutes everyday

Believe it or not, I actually overestimated. I probably have spend 5 minutes talking to my supervisor this entire week so far. I clock in and get everything prepared for my day. Boss comes over and asks how long it will take, I tell them, and our interaction is over for the day. Our conversation is only longer if I need to assist someone else or we are in our peak season.

My dad used that same expression "I work for a living" constantly my whole life (he puts in a lot of hours but it's not a difficult job, at all). Now he whines about why I don't spend more time with him. Think I'll say the same thing.
Real question: I've never really "gotten" standup. Can someone explain to me (as much as is possible) how this is funny? It was amusing for a minute or so, but after that it just seems kind of mean-spirited.
I mean, it's a glimpse into someone's brain. How they percieve the world. Usually with Bill burr especially for me I identify with it but also laugh at how fucking angry and crazy he sounds haha.
A lot of comedy is kinda mean-spirited but still entertaining. It's not 100% serious and it's just enjoyable to hear someone say what is going through a lot of people's heads with zero filter sometimes.
Maybe that's it. I don't really have a filter (yes I'm aware how clichรฉ that sounds) and don't expect it from others, so I don't see this kind of speech as just "what's going through people's heads".
Not every mother, I'm a mom and I fucking love it! My husband works hard to support the three of us, he pays all the bills and because I don't have the skills or a degree to earn enough so that we can afford afford child care- which is insanely expensive- I am a "full-time mom." Sometimes it's not easy, but I recognize how lucky I am to get to love my daughter full time, it's pretty awesome. If anything, leaving her with strangers every day to do something I wouldn't willingly do for free seems like it would be much harder than taking care of her and maintaining my home.
I get the cliche of the joke though, some moms are self-righteous as fuuuck.

You really think the average American lives off of unemployment benefits? I'm American too btw, so you can go ahead and keep that argument in your pocket.
More fun facts:
The average Underground coal miner carries more than $5,000 worth of gear on him every day.
Cap lamp, tracker, special cell phone for underground, self rescuer(20 mins of oxygen), spotter (for methane, CO2, and other gasses. And then some miners carry $11,000 CPDMs on them to monitor dust.
Yeah some mines havenโt adopted the tracking system that uses those cell phones for several reasons, including expense. They donโt work well, and only work in certain areas of the mine.
I can totally see this coming, and when it does, ventilating the neutrals will be even more problematic.
Itโs already difficult enough to keep the intakes higher pressure than the neutrals, everyone will need boatloads more CFMs just to keep the particulates diluted.
Fun fact: over the 5000 hour life of that caplamp that works out to 10 cents an hour, and thank to the riculous testing and standards of msha the chance that the caplamp comes up from underground at the end of the shift are the highest ever.

I know he's joking, but no, it wouldn't be. Saying people are posting irrelevant content isn't gatekeeping, like if somebody is posting about soccer in /r/guitars. It just factually wouldn't belong there.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:29:48 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
It's arguably relevant because it's an anti-gatekeeping post, but it's not actually a post where somebody is gatekeeping, which one could argue this sub is about. So somebody could make the case that saying it doesn't belong here is not actually gatekeeping.
Most jobs are a pain in the ass one way or another. Ya you work at a desk and not on a hardcore oil rig. That doesn't mean you job is a cake walk. That oil rig guy doesn't have consist calls from Stacy in QA to deal with. Or magic staplers disappearing on him everytime he looks away.

My father was a coal miner since he was 16 until the 00's when it closed. He actually misses it because there was a lot less BS. Companies now try cut costs and treat employees like shit.
This is very true. I spent 8 years in the Marine Corps and I don't consider that my "hardest job" at all. My hardest job was working at JCPenney because it fucking sucked. I hated it and had no desire to be there, but I needed the job. The military, while physically and mentally challenging, was fun so I enjoyed it and looked forward to work each day and looked forward to seeing the great friends I worked with.
I know someone who is a tradesman and posts the "my job so hard" memes all of the time, shits on millenials with desk jobs, etc. But, guess who he turns to for computer help.
Whoa. I thought he was going to say โif your boyfriend doesnโt work 26 hours a day on an oil rig while chewing tobacco and cleaning his AR-15, then you have a girlfriend. โ
I've worked plenty of physically-trying jobs. Ones where you come home and go to sleep hurting -- the whole deal. Some of my worst jobs were the ones who beat down on you mentally/emotionally. The effects of those jobs I still deal with today. At worst working hard for very long will land you in a hospital, you get a surgery and a bottle of pills and you're good. We don't have the technology available to fix those mental problems. Now, I say this not to put one over the other but to reinforce the idea of this meme. Some jobs simply look a lot easier, a lot better than they really are.
jebond93 ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 01:58:39 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Thank you, I was a Marine, and I'm in public accounting now. I would take a busy season over boot camp (or any three-month period in the Marine Corps) any day.
It is psychologically challenging as well. Deskjob workers don't usually. worry about losing limbs at work. Count the whole fingers in your workplace and divide by the number of people. You work in an office and that number is probably 10, in a large mine it probably is not. If it is less than 10 in an office, someone hired on that way or it isn't workplace related.
Also there are quotas and production goals and people screaming profanities.

I used to work for a vendor to the US Military. Our equipment was used in-theatre and I can't go into much more detail than that about what it was.
My job was remote break/fix. When our shit went down, people literally could die. How do I know this?
They'd send us reports as part of our contract. I know how many soldiers died on my watch. I know their names and ages. They died because equipment designed to help them survive failed and I couldn't get it fixed in time to save them.
But sure, it's not possible that an office job is in any way more difficult than mining coal.

Very anecdotal, Iโm talking about on a macro level.
Seriously. I work in a woodshop, with sawdust getting in everything, carrying 50lb+ pieces of outdoor furniture. I do this because I mentally can't handle dealing with customers like with retail or food industry. Anxiety way too high for that shit.
everyone gets that, and some people actually are bigger Tool fans than the average Tool fan but it's a dick move to say that all jobs but mine are for pussies or all fans but me are posers

After that I've worked a string of retail jobs. Going into retail, I figured it would be easier than the kennel work. I was very mistaken. The shit (sometimes quite literally) I would have to clean in fitting rooms is disgusting.

Who even is a miner like this anymore? Like honestly, does this exist? I don't mean to be insensitive. Like with mine shafts and coal dust and whatnot?
Haha no. Well except for a few homemade renegade mines in KY. They also have a certain seam of coal there that only exists there and a place in Columbia and burns hotter than hell. Blue Gem seam I think?
Dude what rock are you living under? Most of the miners in the world just get a light. That's it. Remember a lot of these mines are in underdeveloped and developing countries.
Shit there are mines where the workers are basically slaves with gun totting superintendents.

According to my uncle, my job is considered "easy work" and "useless." Well, without me and my coworkers, you and your workers wouldn't have a place to sleep when you're away from home.
He honestly thinks I sit behind a desk and wait for people for 8 to 10 hours. No.....I have a whole list of shit to do which takes up about 6 to 7 hours of my time that I have to work around the customers who are normally a pain in the ass because they had to wait.
Most companies like his can't even get their payments/reservations in order over half of the time, which causes people like him to be mad at people like me for no reason.
My job is not very hard actually. It just doesn't pay well (as compared to others in the industry) and you have to not be bothered by doing a lot of work for very little result.
It is supposed to be condescending and sarcastic I think.

I wish people would stop confusing boring jobs with difficult jobs. Writing down orders and carrying food back and forth isn't difficult, it's boring. Being a waiter isn't difficult. Don't be mean or tip poorly, though
Same thing with motherhood, you hear mothers bitch about how hard they have it. Literally trillions of people have accomplished what they do. How many engineers have ever existed? Lol
It varies a lot. I've worked boring security jobs that make you wanna drill screws in your feet so you can feel something and I've worked ones where I could sit around and play video games. I've worked restaurants jobs that were harder than digging ditches in the summer heat because of the level of stress. It's difficult to become an engineer but some of the jobs are fairly easy especially when you've done it for years.
An engineer screws up and it cost millions. Pizza Hut manager screws up and it cost thousands. Both lose their job. Manager guy loses half his income, has to start back at the bottom, loses their home and car. At least the engineer has a degree to fall back on. Psychologically people can be really screwed up about to break behind their smiles.
I had a manager snap during a failed corporatew inspection with his job on the line. He threw pots and pans, dough in the deep fryer, broke the door off the hinges, screamed, banged his head against the wall, cry and begged for his job back. His failed inspection meant he was losing everything. He was a nice, polite, calm, mr.Rogers type
[deleted] ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 03:45:39 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
That was a completely reasonable response and I concede. I need to rethink my original statement, sorry bro
I've worked in pizza. I've worked digging ditches laying water line, on the side of the road, in temperatures so hot the machinery melts and damages asphalt so we have to cut the day short. I've worked a few different manual labor jobs. I know hard. You don't have enough life experience to understand.
Oh and I get what you mean lots of pizza jobs are easy but you'd be surprised which ones and how many aren't.
Yeah, I've worked both and you'd be surprised how hard it can be. "Hards" relative and you might think it's easy. Personally I've had restaurant jobs harder than excavating and some of the carpentry work I've done. Roofing was a lot harder, so if you've got a job like that I can totally see your point.
Nope and nope. Do you realize the jobs I named are often carried out by one company, on one project, at the same time? Don't see why being poor would matter if I was and why you think it would be an insult. I averaged $16 an hour after taxes at a busy successful independent pizza shop, so I wasn't even really poor when I worked there. Don't be so quick to pre judge.
16 net, not gross and not poor for a 20 year old a few years back. It actually puts you in the middle class. It's sad you think poors an insult, proves you lack real life experience along with the 16 net being poor.
Lol
Ha. Getting a degree isn't difficult, its boring. Memorizing information and regurgitating it isn't difficult, it's boring.
Waiting tables is incredibly difficult for some servers, and involves much more than writing things down and bringing you food. Allergies, pairings, wine etc and menu changes happen frequently. I bet a server at a 4-5 star restaurant has more tacit knowledge necessary to do their job than some engineers- plus the pressure of performance. Your being tested every hour by 10-15 guests and thinking on multiple levels for all the variables mentioned above.
You can argue the merit of the types of work, but your comment is just broad and untrue.
I wonder why they are so against the memo that covers their investigations into Hrc. Theyโre so vehemently against it, changing up their reasoning as to why it shouldnโt be published. hm...

Oh I'm not against people getting educations, in NZ(Where I am) we actually have a shortage of well trained tradesmen, however the industry is dying quickly due to the fact that higher education seems to be something most people are forced into nowadays, I keep forgetting the US has horrifically low wages in a lot of fields, here the minimum wage is something around 16 an hour so for most people in most of the cities here it isn't necessary to save forever to get a half decent house.
I love it when working class heroes act like they're the glue holding the company together, when the reality is that they're a bunch of replaceable chumps with poor social skills and a real talent for making bad life choices.
There's a reason managers make more money. We keep the clown car going.
What, for the hour you come in during the week so you can do nothing but stand over us, micromanage, and remind us how we're failures because our parents don't own the business like your mommy and daddy do?
People like you are making the world turn even further into shit.
Hey, it's not all bad. Remember, if you work really hard, do what you're told, and keep your nose clean, I'll get an even bigger bonus at the end of the year! :)
[deleted] ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 03:15:24 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
You literally just posted this week that youโre a jaded old man.
I'm not convinced you are not just trolling at this point. Your original comment, and your response both seem real... trolly for a lack of better words. You just fucking with us, or are you actually this narrow-minded?
Being totally serious now: from your other comments, you sound like you're currently at the bottom of the food chain. If you have your shit together, in a few years you'll move up the ladder, take on more responsibilities, and you'll find that you have less and less patience for the assholes under you that constantly make your job more difficult, probably more than you'll dislike any incompetents above you.
If you look back at my op, you'll see that I didn't say all workers are fools, just the ones that think only physical, dirty labor is "hard work," like the douchebag in that photo.
Seriously, fuck that guy. There's a fuckton of office people and managers in his company that work just as hard, if not harder. It's just that they paid attention in school and have some basic social skills, so they don't have to dig around in the fucking dirt for a living.
Oh, yes because every low wage worker is an asshole trying to make your job harder. It's very simple. Run a clean smooth-running ship, don't be a dick, and treat your employees like people. That's what we are.
Why are you looking through my comment history? Yes, it's there for the internet to see, and yes I could set on private. I just don't understand why you had to go poking through my history to find some ground to argue on.
Physical labor is hard work. I did work as a groundsman for a tree cutting service. That was the hardest work I've ever done in my life. Your "It's not hard work because I've never done it" logic doesn't cut it.
I believe that people in offices and managers of companies work hard. It's the elitist attitude you displayed in both your OP and all of your responses that make the working environment shit. It's what makes people loathe coming into work.
You never said anything about people thinking certain work is "hard work" in your original post. You stuck your middle finger up at all the low-wage workers in the world. We are the glue, without us you have no business. What, are you going to run the entire business yourself? I don't think so. Just... go fuck yourself.
Isn't that what you meant? You're one to call anyone a dumbass. Just keep changing that narrative so you have some ground to argue on. As if I really care what some neck-bearded troll on Reddit thinks. You probably don't even own a business. You're probably 16, a virgin, and waiting for mommy to finish cooking dinner. Don't you have school tomorrow, champ?
lol no. You're the least frightening people on the planet. The ones among you that have their shit together will act out of self-interest and work towards getting promoted to management, while the rest of you will do as you're told, so you can pay your rent and buy your groceries.
Some of you will continue to be resentful children, always blaming others for your failures, wondering why you have to keep moving from job to job. (psst: it's because you're an asshole who isn't very productive.)
I can tell whoever made this is both a liberal and a millenial - they expect equal praise for less work. This is why our world will come screeching to a grinding hault in a few decades while they play on their tablets and expect above minimum wage

this is why ill never understand why people want to prop up the coal industry!
if they actually cared about the workers, theyd push to retrain them for other jobs, so these people dont have to do decades of backbreaking labor, only to die of mesothelioma at 52 years old. no one should have to sacrifice their well-being for menial wages.

SimpleCoalMiner ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 09:53:54 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

US: (36-3.3% of gdp is gov)57,466.79=18.8 k
UK: (42.1-1.8% of gdp is gov)39,899.39= 16.1 k
dontsaynlgger ยท -16 points ยท Posted at 03:04:04 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

You're working under the premise that every town must exist in perpetuity. That may not be the case. If these towns only exist to support a mine, and that mine goes dry, then these towns don't necessarily need to be propped up until kingdom come.
Mattkittan ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:20:39 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Not really.
dontsaynlgger ยท -13 points ยท Posted at 03:52:43 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
It really is as simple as doing nothing and letting them figure it out.
currently the government intervention is to save the jobs so, there is your government for you!
Mattkittan ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 04:06:04 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Investing in retraining for people in that town helps them find a new job. The government doesnโt give them the job, it just gives them the ability get that job by teaching them new skills. Not exactly government intervention if itโs the market providing the job.
dontsaynlgger ยท -14 points ยท Posted at 04:18:10 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
talk about "it's not that simple" lmao.
I lost my job even though I saw it coming and didn't prepare!

sparhawk817 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:29:18 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Also, I totally think that if a company goes out of business the employees should be entitled to some kind of subsidized education system, or you know, community colleges could be affordable or something again.
dontsaynlgger ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:34:17 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
why?
sparhawk817 ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 04:39:50 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
That is something I doubt you'll regret.
dontsaynlgger ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 04:47:30 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

Sloppy1sts ยท 25 points ยท Posted at 02:30:18 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
We're talking about the people who would fight government programs to retrain them for free.
Lots of people have to move for work. Suck it up because coal is dying.

movzx ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 04:21:10 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Not would fight. Did fight. That is part of the solution the Dems had for the coal miner issue. Retrain those folks, at a cost to the taxpayers, into an industry that wasn't dying.
The whole "they'd have to move!" thing really rustles my jimmies given the attitudes the right wing had about progressives looking for work not a few years prior. "Can't find work? It's your fault! You're not doing whatever it takes! muh bootstraps!" Now they can't find a coal miner job in their shit town paying 80k/yr with no education required? "I need my government handouts!"

I feel like it's really hard to avoid here. I tried to stay out of the oil field but still ended up going into as a casing hand.
netmier ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 02:41:11 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Iโve avoided it pretty well. Iโll make minimum wage and deal with that before I end up in the fields.

It also kills you slowly and painfully. Or quickly an painfully if you worked in a mine run by our current secretary of commerce.

It's not that simple. Industries don't just pop out of existence. There needs to exist a market first.

Thing is, they are offered retraining and education. They turn it down. At this point it's their own fault.

It's not easy to get another job in a coal mining town.
dontsaynlgger ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 02:58:17 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
the workers have a will, and I think some of them would be bummed the mines close. So, don't forget to take them into consideration when you think you know best.
You know, I would never work in a coal mine, or an oil field, no matter the cost cause fuck the labor. If everyone was like me, well, nobody would mine coal, bud.

In theory, and without minding the hard work aspect, living underground might seem kinda cool.
41BottlesOf ยท 31 points ยท Posted at 02:28:50 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

Just ask your dad or uncle to get you a job down at the local mine.

This is honestly the truth. I worked for a grocery store and sure, lifting a ton and putting stuff on shelves for 40 hours a week is rough. Now I work as an assistant at a funeral home, and I spend all day giving 100% to comfort families, help grieve, make sure the services go smoothly, drive the hearse, etc. Both jobs were hard, one physically and one emotionally, and I respect anyone doing any job to its fullest.

I've been thinking about becoming an officer. I'm currently in EMS and college but it's looking more and more like college isn't the right way for me. Right now it's a toss up between going for paramedic or cop.
XxDrummerChrisX ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 13:22:46 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
I'm a college drop out myself but I would recommend getting your degree. I have a few friends in EMS and honestly here being a medic isn't worth what they're paid. We make way more on the police side and I personally like the job much more than what I've seen for EMS. I know you work alongside PD so I'm sure you've got enough exposure to know, although if you haven't already do a ride along and see if you like it.
icantfindaun ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:54:56 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
XxDrummerChrisX ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 14:04:02 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

It was amusing for a minute or so, but after that it just seems kind of mean-spirited.
xitzengyigglz ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 03:19:24 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
I mean, it's a glimpse into someone's brain. How they percieve the world. Usually with Bill burr especially for me I identify with it but also laugh at how fucking angry and crazy he sounds haha.

A lot of comedy is kinda mean-spirited but still entertaining. It's not 100% serious and it's just enjoyable to hear someone say what is going through a lot of people's heads with zero filter sometimes.
epicazeroth ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 05:22:13 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

More fun facts: The average Underground coal miner carries more than $5,000 worth of gear on him every day.

All jobs are tough in their own way. My first job was working at a large boarding kennel. Boss was a total abusive bitch, and imagine cleaning up dog shit all day in 100 degree heat. After that I've worked a string of retail jobs. Going into retail, I figured it would be easier than the kennel work. I was very mistaken. The shit (sometimes quite literally) I would have to clean in fitting rooms is disgusting.

Lol
Bob_Vila_did_it ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 02:32:52 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

Bob_Vila_did_it ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 02:58:27 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

Bob_Vila_did_it ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:27:45 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah, I've worked both and you'd be surprised how hard it can be. "Hards" relative and you might think it's easy. Personally I've had restaurant jobs harder than excavating and some of the carpentry work I've done. Roofing was a lot harder, so if you've got a job like that I can totally see your point.
nevercatdogaruff ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:11:49 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Sounds like you can't hold a job. Enjoy being poor.
Bob_Vila_did_it ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:11:46 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Don't be so quick to pre judge.
nevercatdogaruff ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:57:01 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
16 dollars an hour......yea poor
Bob_Vila_did_it ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:09:25 on February 3, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
16 net, not gross and not poor for a 20 year old a few years back. It actually puts you in the middle class. It's sad you think poors an insult, proves you lack real life experience along with the 16 net being poor.
nevercatdogaruff ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:14:07 on February 3, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Nobody calculates gross income hourly
You're lying
16 is poor, grow up
Bob_Vila_did_it ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:26:31 on February 3, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
What country are you from? Everyone calculates gross income hourly. Minimum wage is $7.25 gross.
I made minimum wage plus averaged around $80 in tips a night after gas which is high for a pizza place but common at the better independent stores.
That's around 16 an hour net 20ish gross. That's $40,000 a year.
I guess you're so out of touch $40,000 is poor. You need to do some growing up yourself.

We keep the clown car going.
edit: lol, so much salt, I love it.

You sound like a fun and awesome manager. How do you mask the contempt during meetings?
Scienscatologist ยท -4 points ยท Posted at 02:06:59 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
I don't.
FooLyCooLie ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 02:24:59 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
What, for the hour you come in during the week so you can do nothing but stand over us, micromanage, and remind us how we're failures because our parents don't own the business like your mommy and daddy do?
People like you are making the world turn even further into shit.
Scienscatologist ยท -5 points ยท Posted at 02:55:17 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Scienscatologist ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:18:28 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
your point?
FooLyCooLie ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 05:23:55 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
I'm not convinced you are not just trolling at this point. Your original comment, and your response both seem real... trolly for a lack of better words. You just fucking with us, or are you actually this narrow-minded?
Scienscatologist ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:46:32 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Am I narrow-minded or are you just very naive?
FooLyCooLie ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 07:04:09 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Scienscatologist ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:08:57 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Oh, sorry. I thought you had actual reading comprehension skills. Turns out you're a dumbass. No wonder you're upset.
Paranoid, too, I see. I was referring to your comments directed towards me in this thread. FFS, pay attention.
FooLyCooLie ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:58:51 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
"working class heroes" - "low wage workers"
Isn't that what you meant? You're one to call anyone a dumbass. Just keep changing that narrative so you have some ground to argue on. As if I really care what some neck-bearded troll on Reddit thinks. You probably don't even own a business. You're probably 16, a virgin, and waiting for mommy to finish cooking dinner. Don't you have school tomorrow, champ?
Scienscatologist ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:50:19 on February 3, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
yawn
Well, that was boring. For a moment I almost thought you were worth talking to.
FooLyCooLie ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:15:38 on February 3, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
You're pathetic. Kill yourself.
skooterblade ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 05:11:40 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
And you'll still be afraid of us.
Scienscatologist ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:25:33 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
It's not pretty, but that's how it is.
skooterblade ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 05:47:05 on February 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Yep. That's why you guys build gated communities and have security. Because you aint afraid of nithin.

I want you to think about how tough you are the next time your boss tells you to get your lazy ass back to work, and you don't kick his ass.

Thatโs a new approach to selling pickup trucks, work boots, or mass produced lager/pilsner beers. Iโm for it.

Guess everyone's favorite anti-intellectual Mike Rowe hasn't aged well.
EDIT: Really does look like him if he was older and had a beard
EDIT: whatever, downvoter. This is exactly the sort of patronizing "I work a tough job" rhetoric Mike Rowe would use.

I can tell whoever made this is both a liberal and a millenial - they expect equal praise for less work. This is why our world will come screeching to a grinding hault in a few decades while they play on their tablets and expect above minimum wage
