Because it is a crazy algorithm, deciding on which questions will get the most answers out of the pool. While it is process of elimination, the impressive part is how it achieves it.

Verum14 ยท 130 points ยท Posted at 03:42:01 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I don't see how that's crazy? That would be a relatively simple algo.

Step 1 - Check which question has as close to a 50/50 split as possible, so either answer eliminates half of the pool

Step 2 - Ask question

Lugbor ยท 160 points ยท Posted at 03:47:30 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

As I understand it, the more possible outcomes there are for a given task, the harder it is for a computer to efficiently make a decision. Because of how many answers there are in this thing, the system it uses to determine good questions is pretty impressive. Iโ€™m fairly certain it also handles uncertainties to an extent, because Iโ€™ve had it come up with the same answer even when I answer a few questions differently, and weighted answers like that are a whole other problem.

mistcurve ยท 95 points ยท Posted at 06:57:53 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I had to do something similar to a 20Q for a project for a CS class. It was surprising strait forward.

I basically just had to set up a binary search tree, then think of something, let's say we thing of a potato.

So the thing doesn't have any questions yet, so it has you input that you were thinking of a potato.

Next we'll think of an apple. We run the program and it says, "is your item a potato?" We say no, and to train the program, it says "what is the difference between a potato and an apple?" And you put some sort of answer like "the color red"

So we go again. Now we think of something like a cherry. The program asks, "is the color red?". We say yes. It asks "is it an apple?". We say no. It asks for the item, and we say a cherry. It asks for a difference between a cherry and an apple, and we say "smaller than a golf ball".

Get someone with no life to do this a crap ton of times, until you can't think of anything else people could possibly want and then get someone else to do it.

After you get it to know everything you want, you need to optimize the binary tree and boom, you've got a seemingly magic data structure that can guess your thing quite quickly.

Obviously this is a little oversimplified compared to things like Akinator. But if you have no previous knowledge about the basics of how it works I feel like this will help a little. Hopefully.

sidekickman ยท 20 points ยท Posted at 07:46:08 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)*

Plug in a massive dictionary. Maybe a few hundred megabytes of text. Something more like an encyclopedia, with history, names, places.

Parse noun definitions for quantifiable descriptors, like "automobile" or "large." Keep an eye for nested definitions (apple is a kind of fruit), common adjective-noun pairs (food is edible). These traits will establish our "specificity hierarchy." A lot of words are associated with "edible" - but only a couple will be associated with "fruit." This way, we quantify how much more specific "fruit" is than "food," and how apple is more specific than both.

Ask questions regarding maximally associated words (general adjectives, classifiers), like "is it a person, place, or thing?"

The nuance is in the amount you narrow the scope with each question. How do you go from "is it an object" to "is it large" to "is it an automobile?" How you decide if you'll ask about an adjective (is it red?) or about a class (is it an automobile?) That's the hard part, and the thing I'd love to know more about.

I imagine it has something to do with the connectedness of the valid word graph (words that meet all provided answers). That is to say, how associated the remaining valid words are with each other. If we're at the fruit level of specificity, we have green apples, red delicious, pears, bananas, and so on. Apples will all be strongly associated with one another, or "well connected."

Also beware: a word definition network is not a binary search. There will be many places where branches weave, and there will be cycles. It could potentially be untangled, but this would likely require duplicating words for each branch and blowing up the space required to embed the program.

I've also left out something. The questions sometimes allow for user contradiction. That's pretty impressive, and perhaps more sophisticated than what I outlined above.

THAT BEING SAID, they could also use ML. Depends on if they had a way to source honest data and test it.

edit: They did use ML, and not expert systems.

Firewolf420 ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 09:12:46 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

These are valid solutions to the problem but just for the sake of the discussion here, they definitely did not use ML for this small little embedded 20Q device.

sidekickman ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:57:25 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

They could have used ML to generate the tree. From what I could find, they actually did use ML, and not expert systems.

ML isn't necessarily a giant thing that requires terabytes of data.

Firewolf420 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:40:46 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

blunderbauss ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 09:46:18 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I think its a simple expert system. Been around since <1980s

Uses rules and inferencing to determine answers.

If "has claws" and if "has sharp teeth" = "is carnivore"

If "is carnivore" and is "fast" and "has spots"

"Is it a cheetah?"

Etc.

sidekickman ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:58:40 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I looked it up this morning - NOT an expert system! Turns out they did have a website to train their ML. The device itself contains a smaller chunk of what they collected online.

uber1337h4xx0r ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:57:51 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

The problem is that people will often answer things incorrectly because they don't know technicalities.

"Is he a leader of a country?"

Some might say yes, some might say no if the answer is, for example, Mike Pence or the guy that's in charge of Palestine (I haven't kept up since Yassir Arafat). The reason being: pence is A leader, just not necessarily THE leader. Likewise, some will say Palestine is a country, some won't. They're excellent questions, but the answers are worthless.

Similarly, for your own example: cherries.

"Is it red?"

Well, cherries can be red. But there's also black cherries. And they are green (I think?) before they ripen. So I wouldn't know if I should say yes or no if I was thinking of a cherry.

And then there's instances where you don't really know how to answer it.

Like let's say your answer is ground pepper.

"Is it a vegetable?"

Well... It is when it's still in pepper form. But do the seeds count as a vegetable? "Is it a plant?" I mean... No, since my hair isn't an animal, for example, but I'm pretty sure someone trying to narrow it down from "is it edible?" -> yes, "is it a plant\vegetable?" -> no, would consider pepper and other spices to be out of the acceptable answers now.

Since you can't really reason with computer, this stuff is a lot harder to program than it looks.

mistcurve ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:31:07 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah, there are a few ways this system can work something like that out.

Firstly, I think it's pretty necessary that the tree allows for repeat answers, so that if you give the system to be trained to 10 people, with 10 different opinions, at the end of it your tree might have 6 different paths to the answer "cherry".

Other than that, you could make the binary tree, a base-4 tree (idk if it has a name) like is done in the 20Q. So you can answer unknown or sometimes as well. This increases the maximum number of possible end answers from 220 to 420.

My last post was pretty good, I'm much more tired today, and I'll admit I haven't actually implemented the stuff that I've explained in this particular comment, I've just thought about how I would do it.

Verum14 ยท 42 points ยท Posted at 03:55:15 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

The first sentence is 100% correct. I actually forgot about the other two answers, so also thanks for the reminder ๐Ÿ˜‚

So the answers are Unk, Y, N, Sometimes. For unk, they can simply throw out the answer (because essentially no answer was given). Y and N are self explanatory. For sometimes, that would be where weighing or variation could come in.

Let's say the object is a balloon.

Does it drive? --> no

Is it blue? --> sometimes

Is it round --> yes

Under normal circumstances, unk doesn't means a new question is needed and sometimes means either solution can be true. This would eliminate trees for example, and they are never blue.

Maybe this helped? I'm too tired sorry ๐Ÿ˜‚

Assume there is always a question that can split the number of remaining candidate answers in half. That means, with 20 questions, there are 220 or ~1,000,000 answers that 20Q can differentiate between. Google says there are ~171,000 words in the English language.

Hereโ€™s a (practically useless) way to ask questions that satisfy my assumption: If you number each word in the English language, convert to binary, and take the last 20 digits, you can just ask for each of the binary digits in order and guess the word for sure.

Zeeterm ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:21:19 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

It could be even simpler than that and have almost no processing at the cost of storage, because the questions can be pre determined rather than evaluated every time.

What you need is to construct a single binary tree with 20 levels. Then you just walk the tree. Answer yes? Go left, answer no? Go right. Then find the question that is at the next node. Determining the tree can all be pre-calculated.

At the bottom you have the result.

That would need a bunch of storage, so on the fly determination of which question is most discriminating from a set of questions / attributes might be cheaper but that would require a lot more logic than walking a set tree.

monxas ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:23:50 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

The thing is if you were mistaken in a question it could still recover, so it doesnโ€™t eliminate, it reduces confidence. I hate when people disregard something as โ€œitโ€™s just a simple binary treeโ€. Well itโ€™s clearly not just that. It has a confidence system behind too, and maybe more stuff we donโ€™t k ow about.

Zeeterm ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 11:13:11 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Could these old ones recover from being lied to? If so that's impressive and gives credence to the fact that they weren't using lookup tables.

I don't think a binary tree is a simplification, constructing the binary tree would be incredibly complex because you would need to rebalance it to make sure that no nodes are more than 20 deep and that isn't a trivial exercise.

I wasn't trying to be reductionist or claim "anyone could do that!" at all, but instead presenting how something that appears to have little to no processing power could still appear intelligent.

Unknown would presumably be the same as if the question had never been asked. The machine just gets one less question to base its final guess on. Sometimes would eliminate anything where the answer is always yes or always no.

throwawayZ2BK ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:27:51 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

That gives you 420, over 1 trillion. However, it's more likely that those options just modify the decision tree in some way to ignore the question.

With these they don't so much eliminate answers as move them down on a confidence list. A single wrong answer will lower the confidence the AI has in the choice, but if it's doing a well enough job it should still put the correct answer at the top of its list of possibilities.

tomayto_potayto ยท 22 points ยท Posted at 08:13:56 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Got to q70 and it just said "your character is not one of the most popular characters. Every day you get new credits which allow you to play all the characters. If you want to play Akinator again come back tomorrow or download the app" no option to add my character. Oh well

Dude, thatโ€™s weak as far as Akinator is concerned. You gotta get reeeaall fucking obscure.

*Everyone responding to me saying it couldn't guess something, did you click "I am wrong." after the first guess? Akinator will guess well before 20 questions if it has a good idea. You don't beat Akinator until it literally says "I give up," and then you input the info on what you were trying to make it guess. Of course, that also requires the person playing to know the appropriate answers to the questions (you can have an obscure character or something else in mind, but how is Akinator supposed to guess it if you give it nothing to go on).

**definitely not saying it's unbeatable

Not surprising. It mostly relies on user input. That's also why it tells you the last date a particular character was guessed.

It's easy to stump Akinator if you are a fan of indie games.

uber1337h4xx0r ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 10:21:37 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I mean, I feel it's pointless if it's an obscure game no one plays. I think it's perfectly fine to play characters that are super obscure but from known games. Someone like Booster from Mario rpg or Raven Lord from heroes of the Storm or Mr. foster from killing floor, or the Russian engineer from command and conquer 3 are fair game to me. But being like "ha you didn't guess Steve from Super Mario Kaizo romhack 3.2 Japanese" is just stupid.

Unicarn54 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 07:37:00 on July 14, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

The point of the whole "game" is to add more data to its database, so the more information you give it that it doesn't know, the better. It doesn't matter how "obscure" it is.

uber1337h4xx0r ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:20:30 on July 14, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I'm aware of how it works. But eventually it can get ridiculous if you get too obscure with a game or too specific.

"I guessed: the first koopa paratroopa on stage 3-1"

No

"Oh. What is the answer then?"

The second koopa troopa on stage 3-1

I just managed to stump it with Gwen DeLancy from The Riyria Revelations series, but I'm really impressed by how well it was able to guess some of my other ideas. I think your best bet for beating it these days is choosing side characters from semi-obscure novels.

nerdbomer ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:27:09 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Oh, that's a good choice.

I managed to stump it with the main characters from the Cradle series, but I'm not that surprised by that either. It's definitely less popular than Riyria.

Am I doing it wrong? It could neither find chemistry, chemical, nor ethanol/alcohol.

Now, it complains that my answers regarding alcohol were wrong:

You were thinking of alcohol.

You said it's classified as Unknown, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is Concept.

Was it invented? You said No, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is Yes.

Is it native to Asia? You said Partly, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No.

Is it outside? You said Partly, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No.

Does it make something move? You said Sometimes, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No.

Can it bend without breaking? You said Yes, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No.

Is it soft? You said Yes, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No.

20Q was guessing orange juice, coffee, lubricant, something naughty, a fetish, and then gave up.

MiddleBodyInjury ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 09:50:21 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

uber1337h4xx0r ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 10:29:03 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I think they want you to call alcohol a mineral. I looked up the rules and they were like "if it's not a living thing, then it's a mineral, since for example, big Ben is made out of metal and glass".

Alcohol is tricky in that it was both invented and not invented. I'm sure it was first found when someone ate bad grapes and was like "whoa, I'm so dizzy haha". Then they invented ways to mass produce it. And then later probably invented isopropyl alcohol (the way I see it, if someone can say that they invented Tide or Coca Cola, then someone invented rubbing alcohol).

Regarding moving something, I want to believe there are alcohol powered engines (I dunno if it's a joke, but I think I heard Russia had something that could run off burning alcohol in the ussr days). Hell.... I think that corn oil 85% shit that the us uses is alcohol.

MiddleBodyInjury ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:47:09 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

It only got guitar after 26 questions, guessing a cello (bass violin), a trombone, a banjo, and a double bass first. It complains that my answers were wrong:

You were thinking of a guitar.

Is it white? You said Sometimes, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No.

Does it have writing on it? You said No, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is Yes.

Is it originally from Europe? You said Yes, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No.

I'd argue that yes, some guitars (acoustic and electric) are white, even though the classical guitar usually isn't. None of the questions posed were suited to differentiate between classical, western, and electric guitar though. But I can accept that this answer was ambiguous.

In the same sense, a guitar sometimes has writing on it, in a decorative manner or in form of the maker's label on the inside. I answered "no", because I didn't want it to think of a book or screen. The answer most definitely isn't "yes" though.

Finally, the instrument we today refer to as guitar did indeed originate in Europe. Predecessors of the guitar can be found in Asia, Africa, and Europe. The modern guitar was invented in Europe, including also the western guitar.

uber1337h4xx0r ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 10:54:03 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah, that's the weakness of the game. It needs players that understand how yes, no, usually, rarely works.

Most questions, realistically, will not be yes or no. They'll be usually (yes, but sometimes no) or rarely (no, but sometimes yes). And then even the hard yes or hard no questions can be too vague.

Like, lemme do a real life example for "computers". Now already that's a bad choice because an abacus and a calculator is a computer in that it solves math. But let's say I was thinking of "electronic computer, the kind that processes logic". Well, an MP3 player is a computer because it has logic functions. So I'll try to be fair and want it to find "desktop computer". So before the game began there was already confusion. Anyway:

Something you can wear?

You can wear a computer... I saw a guy wearing one in a meme. But normally you wouldn't, so I'll say NO even though the answer is really rarely.

Can it fit in an envelope? A Mac book air can as they showed in the commercials, but I'm thinking desktop computer, and we'll assume they meant letter sized envelop and not large one. Again, the answer should be rarely, but I'll say NO.

Does it refract light? The monitor can on a desktop computer set up, and my open case model that has a see through plastic "top" does... But I'll say no. Should be sometimes.

Can you walk on it? You can, but you shouldn't. This is a bad question because you can walk on anything physical. I'm not sure if it's asking "is it possible to walk on it?" (Anything that exists) "Is it possible to walk on it without ruining it?" (an egg) "Is it possible to on walk on it without harming yourself" (broken glass) "is it possible to walk on without getting in trouble?" (A cop, declaration of Independence). I'll assume they are asking if it's possible to walk on it. So I'll give it a YES.

Can you make pie from it? Easy NO

Is it used to make jewelry? I mean... I'm sure most jewelry cutting uses computers for precise cutting. But I assume it's asking if the computer is melted down to make jewels. Aside for recycling gold, no.

Can you hold it? It'll be hard to.hiod both the monitor and pc, but yes.

Is it a source of energy? Sometimes. Just ask my phone when it's low on energy.

Is it bad for your health? Studies show that sitting in front of a PC for a long time can increase odds of stroke and heart disease. But I'll say no because the OC itself is not the problem.

Is it bigger than a microwave? Easy sometimes.

Does it come in varieties? Yes

Is it a geology feature? No

Will it break if dropped? Sometimes. But I'll say yes since most computers do break at least a little.

Is it carved? No

Is it large? Sometimes.

Does it shine? I hate this one. Yes, sometimes they shine. Sometimes they're dull, sometimes they're reflective.

"I'm guessing it's concrete" terrible answer because concrete doesn't provide energy, and it isn't large.

Does it have ears? No

"I think it's a brick" no

I'd it in an office? Y

"Is it marble" no

Was it used over 100 years ago? No (not a desktop anyway)

"It's it heavy?" Sometimes

"Is it a printer?" Close

"Is it a laptop?" Close

It better get it right on the next one...

"Is it a computers" thank God, finally

You said it's classified as Mineral, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is Concept. Can you walk on it? You said Yes, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No. Is it a source of energy? You said Sometimes, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No. Is it very large? You said Sometimes, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No. Does it shine? You said Sometimes, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No.

Sphincters are used in other parts of the body, like the esophagus and the joint between the stomach and the duodenum, so in reality he did not really guess asshole.

dotslashhookflay ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 09:15:03 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Well, it's possible it was lucky, but I'm sure the programmer knew there would be teenagers playing this thing wanting to laugh at it guessing "vagina" or "dick" or something of the sort, but they couldn't just put in those words.

AlwaysHopelesslyLost ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:39:26 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

That was my thought process to. That said I think it is worth affirming that it should be OK/expected for a teenager to know what a vagina/penis is.

JC_Mac7 ยท 244 points ยท Posted at 02:43:57 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

It'd be more impressive if it was listening. Combining speech recogition, speech-to-text, natural language processing, and context analysis was cutting edge technology in the 90's. It'd be a miraculous accomplishment if a toy designer had managed to master it all and sell it for only $10.

cameralover1 ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 07:22:01 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Imagine they would've sold it that cheap as a toy to be able to fund the research and each little ball would educate some sort of AI

KiraDidNothingWrong_ ยท 20 points ยท Posted at 08:43:56 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Well then each toy would need to be connected to the internet to relay the info. And even to be able to use the APIs the guy above mentionned.

starmartyr ยท 38 points ยท Posted at 06:26:00 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

It's basically a flowchart. The answer to the first question leads to the second which leads to the third. The device seems like it's being intuitive and making deductions but it's just following a predetermined path. It seems impressive to us because no human would ever be able to memorize that many combinations of questions and answers, but it's a simple task for a computer.

Sage1969 ยท 49 points ยท Posted at 06:55:46 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Thats not the part thats impressive imo... its the absolute sheer number of answers it has stored. there must be millions. no matter how obscure I got, it could get it. I remember it even got side characters from a novel I was reading...

minastirith1 ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 09:22:27 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Wait are you serious?? I thought it could guess all the โ€œgeneral knowledgeโ€ type items. Did it actually guess specific stuff from novels?? I donโ€™t understand how that would be possible. Was it a very popular novel? Coz I can imagine characters from very famous books would be in there.

Sage1969 ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 11:11:30 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Probably, it was something 14-yo me would have been reading.. maybe harry potter? or isaac asimov something.

But still. All of those items can't be tagged automatically, as far as I can figure. Each character, material, food, object, etc would need to have its characteristics saved somehow. that's the part that blows my mind even today, must have been an insane amount of legwork

AlwaysHopelesslyLost ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:41:39 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

light24bulbs ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 06:10:00 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

First, it was an online browser game, which I played as a kid. It got more accurate as I played it, until eventually they used all of the learning from the browser game and put it into this embedded device, which is more well known than the online game the preceded it. Genius monetization strategy. The online game was actually more capable, since the embedded device only had a subset of the most common answers. Still works amazingly well though.

I believe it was a relatively primitive type of machine learning. An ML person could definitely say more.

malexj93 ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 08:07:06 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

It's a decision tree, one of the simplest models in ML. It basically takes a bunch of samples from people answering questions and saying what they were thinking, and decides at each step "which question can I ask that gives me the most information?". Here, information is mathematically defined, so we can actually calculate which is the best. Once it has above a certain threshold of certainty (say, 99%) or reaches 20 question asked, it will guess the most likely option. There are some more advanced techniques that go into this to save memory and compute time, but in the grand scheme of ML it is very accessible.

Each time someone plays it uses it to learn, so it can get these random characters because someone else would have tried it, it wouldn't have been able to guess it so then it asks what you were thinking of, then stores it so it can use it later on

It just got Hiccup from How To Train your Dragon. I thought it would be confused when I said yes to the character being in a TV show even though the movies are more known. About half way through it asked about dragons and I knew I was fucked.

Edit. Can't get Ed from Lion King. It asked if it was associated with lions, if it was part odd a trio, if it made sounds instead of talking, but couldn't get it. First time I got to 75 questions before it gave up and the second time it got to 20 something before giving up. Can anyone get Ed.

DIABLO258 ยท 19 points ยท Posted at 03:12:13 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

It's based upon tags, and simply narrowing down the results. Each "Guess" has certain tags so it only appears when certain questions are answered in a specific way. Answering these questions eliminates certain "Guesses" and the list just gets shorter and shorter until it thinks it's found the correct "Guess"

If it's wrong it just keeps narrowing it down.

I'm just guessing btw

It essentially narrows it down based on the number of questions until it is reasonably confident that it knows the answer then it guesses. Think of all the people in the world I can eliminate by asking: is it a female? Is she in movies? Has she acted in a romantic comedy? And so on. The system prefers to ask questions that will eliminate the highest number of things or people based on the answer.

Cynical_Manatee ยท 65 points ยท Posted at 05:21:11 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

The thing is, you don't even have to start at the most dividing question, you can ask your general questions in any order to come to the same subset of possibilities.

everyones-a-robot ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 06:57:44 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)*

But not in the same number of rounds (probably).

It's definitely better to be greedy with your algorithm in this case.

ic33 ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 07:06:32 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

But you have dividing questions that remove other questions' applicability: you want to divide the set so that you can only ask useful questions and not waste asks.

Slacker5001 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 08:11:16 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

The system prefers to ask questions that will eliminate the highest number of things or people based on the answer.

Statistically speaking I think you worded this wrong. If your thinking of something and I ask you if it's a potato and I was right, I would have just eliminated the highest number of options. But you don't want the machine to ask a million specific questions. You want it to ask general ones and narrow it down.

Ideally the machine asks questions that take all the available options and divide them in half (assuming yes or no questions). So every time it would be getting rid of the highest number of things it could for sure eliminate every time.

You can look it up. The original patent is described well by the engineer who filed the patent.

It's essentially a neural network. The machine keeps track of lists of questions and lists of objects. Each question and object has a possible set of answers (yes/no/etc) and each answer has a probability.

As the game is played, the probability adjusts. This is the neural network. The original author created the game on a floppy disk and passed it around to be played. Once these probabilities have settled, they can be hard coded into the machine.

commander_nice ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 05:34:32 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

The thing that boggled my mind is how in the world they included so much in there. Presumably someone had to take all those terms and say which of the categories each falls into. The rest of it, figuring out which questions to ask and narrow down an answer, must have been pretty easy to program.

Camenwolf ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 08:27:25 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

It used an artificial neural network, a sort of self evolving AI based on the input of millions of users over a period of years. They didn't actually code the "guesses". They developed an AI framework that learned as it was used.

It's fascinating, quasi-spooky stuff. I believe you can still play at http://www.20q.net although when I tried it just now the site was down. Hopefully just for maintenance.

morphinapg ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 09:12:34 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Artificial neural networks didn't exist when this thing came out. Plus it wasn't connected to the internet for the data you'd need to do something like that.

Womble_Don ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 10:00:03 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

He's mostly wrong, but not far off.

20Q did use artificial neural networks based on peoples responses to get the right answer, it developed over time and then in 2004 they basically copy and pasted the knowledge base they had built up into the handheld device shown above, so the data was stored on it locally, but the original data was generated through a neural network (which has been around since the 1940s btw)

morphinapg ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:33:58 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Camenwolf ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 17:47:35 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I think you are saying "mostly wrong" because my comment is overly simplified. Which is fair. But the motivation for my comment isn't an in depth explanation of neural networks or AI or how the 20q implemented this technology, or maybe more correctly, the results of this technology.

I just kept seeing posts by people who expressed wonder in how the programmers could conceive of so many possibilities and program the "guesses" as if they hand coded the logic for many millions of possibilities, which is a logical assumption for someone who is unfamiliar with the concept. My goal is just to set anyone who is interested on the right research path.

Womble_Don ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:23:56 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Nah dude, I'm very much on your side. But your use of "it" implied that the handheld toy used artificial neural networks, which it certainly didn't, but it is based on work done by ANNs.

The people who replied to you were more wrong than you

Camenwolf ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 20:47:12 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)*

Well, that's very true, although I feel it's a bit knit picking, as my point was simply that the toy was not built by programmers meticulously coding the logic for millions of choices, rather the logic was built by a neutral network.

It's almost as if I showed someone a print of an oil painting and told them it was done using oils as opposed to acrylics or what have you. No it's not an oil painting, it's a print. But it's a print of an oil painting and to knit pick about that is just refusing to see the forest for the trees and to argue simply for argument's sake.

I read your other posts. I know you have a clear understanding of the technology. A couple of other guys, one in particular, just jumped on here and really indicated ignorance then when I linked him to some articles, started doubling down claiming that the plethora of references were the ones that were wrong, not him.

People are amazing in their tenacious grasp of their own misinformation and ignorance.

aStarryBlur ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 10:08:07 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

2) neural networks don't "evolve" they do hill climbing with gradients

3) neural networks would be fucking awful at this

4) they did binary search

Womble_Don ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:01:32 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

The database was generated by an artificial neural network over the course of 20 years, in 2004 they put what they had into the handheld device, so the knowledge was stored locally and didn't require a neural network or online, but was still data created by an ANN

Am I falling for Poe's law or do you actually believe in this word salad

Womble_Don ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:08:37 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

You must be pretty stupid if you think that's word salad, my comment came out as 22-23 year old on a reading grade test.

Here's some more info:

20Qย is a computerized game ofย twenty questionsย that began as a test inย artificial intelligenceย (AI). It was invented by Robin Burgener in 1988.[1]ย The game was made handheld byย Radicaย in 2004

The 20Q AI uses anย artificial neural networkย to pick the questions and to guess.[1][4]ย After the player has answered the twenty questions posed (sometimes fewer), 20Q makes a guess. If it is incorrect, it asks more questions, then guesses again. It makes guesses based on what it has learned; it is not programmed with information or what the inventor thinks.ย

The built Artificial Neural Network is not resource intensive either to store or to compute, thus it could be embedded in small, less powerful devices. Currently, there is aย handheldย version of the AI. The device contains a small portion of the original 20Q website knowledge base; unlike the online versions of the game, the handheld version does not have the ability to learn.

stu2b50 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 10:17:42 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

Good lesson on when to look deeper into wikipedia articles. The sources are dubious to say the least.

One is the archive of a 2006 talk which says some vague bullshit about AI, the other is the FAQ which looks it was made in the 90s and gives equally brief, empty answers.

The way both talk about "neurons" and "connections" is just ridiculous. Neural networks are layers of relu(w@x + b). Any connection with "neurons" is just trying make it look fancier than it is.

Here are reasons to believe it's not a neutral network

1) it fucking predates word2vec

2) you're not running a neural network on that level of hardware

3) some like boosted trees would almost certainly be preferred for tiny embedded hardware

4) or yknow binary search

Womble_Don ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:22:59 on July 13, 2019 ยท (Permalink)

I actually did Google it, and there is literally nothing to support that idea. In fact, the only technical link suggests a decision tree.

It's just vague phrasing about their "AI" on their own website.

Honestly, I'd be impressed if they used a neural network because it's like making a house out of ice cream. It's just completely the wrong tool for the job.

If I had to guess, it's just a decision tree fit on surveys.

I still remember getting one of these for Christmas and playing it in the car the whole car ride down visiting family with my dad and stepmom. I remember how jarring it was to them when it would just ask "is he/she black (or white)" cuz the question was outta nowhere and blunt.

Theres an Akinator app now, that genie that could read your mind on the internet.

Big problem now though. The fuckers decided monetize. Now if you pick a good character, it says "this is a premium character" before asking you to buy the app, and you don't get to see if it actually knew who you picked.

Anyway 20Q is cool.

As others have said, the device itself is relatively simple following a flow chart and taking paths on that chart based on your answers.

I'd be interested in how that flow chart was originally created though. How did they wind up with that particular chart being able to answer 99% of the puzzles you gave it?

I rmb after a while, itโ€™d be fun to be completely honest and let the game guess within 5 questions. There was almost a way to hint to the game what youโ€™re thinking of without explicitly saying so

Basically a next level "8 ball" that you shook and asked a question! It basically "tries to figure out what you're thinking" by asking 20 general questions narrowing it down until it 100% guesses whatever you had in your head, shit was creepy when I was 10!!

There was a error in at least some versions. We were trying for "hummingbird" and the questions were moving closer and closer to the inevitable correct conclusion...then it came back with "human head." Tried multiple times and kept getting the same result. Guessing an entry was miss-typed or an index was off.

I've still got mine! Most of the pixels are dead now, but you can still just make out what it says when the questions are long enough to scroll into the less dead areas. Sometimes I break it out for the dual entertainment of 20Q and deciphering those questions that you can only see bits and pieces of.

Edit: Just realised the image shows a 20Q with an undo button. Thought that seemed odd so I went and checked, and lo and behold mine doesn't have it! Seems identical otherwise, same logo and everything. Maybe mine's especially old, or perhaps a knockoff? Wouldn't surprise me given the way parents are.

The first time I used it, I was thinking of an โ€œassholeโ€ to see if it would get the answer. It answered with โ€œsphincterโ€ within four or five questions as though it had done that a million times by now. I was thoroughly impressed.

I still have mine. I take it to music festivals and it's always a fun camp toy. How the hell the batteries have lasted 22 years is beyond me.

Is it small? You said No, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is Yes.

Is it colorless? You said Sometimes, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No.

Does it involve contact with other humans? You said Probably, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No.

Do you use it in public? You said Yes, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No.

Is it bright? You said Sometimes, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No.

Can it be used to start fires? You said Yes, 20Q was taught by other players that the answer is No.

Nah. The function they use to arrive at the answer can be ascertained by the fifth question or so. It has a massive internal database and it cutting out huge swaths based on user input.

Itโ€™s the electronic version of Guess Who?.

Anyone who had their mind blown by this was a moron. Itโ€™s just a database searching algorithm. We interact with these things every day.

It's kinda amazing that they fit it in such a small package at the time. Everyone knew how it worked. But it was kinda amazing in the same way those pocket electronic Dictionary was. We didn't have smart phones or tablets.

It wasnโ€™t amazing to me, just simple. And these came out near the cusp of smartphones. Your last sentence makes it seem like you believe me to be young. No. I was born in a time before cds were a thing and the internet still required to be dialed and even that was brand new. The moment I saw these things, I was completely unimpressed.
