The adjective 'suicidal' is great in this game too. You can make:

  • A 'suicidal baby' that will seek out a weapon to kill itself

  • A 'suicidal gun' that will shoot itself with a second gun

  • An 'armless suicidal man' who will just stand by weapons looking rather glum

I remember back in Super Scribblenauts, there was a level to help film a horror movie, but no one was allowed to get hurt. I spawned a killer, but to try and make him safe I gave him a 'blunt knife'

What I wanted: A knife that could not be used to cut.
What I got: A knife that went around the level insulting people.

liamcole99 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:15:32 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

Not OP, it is a physics simulation of a solar system in which you can build and control craft. but there isn't a strict limit on what you can do besides the laws of physics, and people go hog-wild making crazy contraptions, such as a Transforming bird plane or "The most Kerbal" device ever, or something more standard building a base on a moon of a gas giant Edit: fixed link

satan-agrees ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:27:28 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

two of your links lead to the bird plane.

satan-agrees ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:24:04 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

While having ass loads of fun building cool ass ships, space stations, and other such machines, you also learn orbital mechanics.

People go nuts with their designs, and challenges like flying from underwater on "Kerbal" (the home planet) to the bottom of the sea on another planet, and back in a single launch

It's fun as hell to play the career mode (where you start with essentially nothing and work your way to everything), or to screw around in sandbox mode where everything is unlocked and your only limitations are the laws of physics and your mind.

Plus it has mods that add a shit load of features, like the War mod that puts another station that you make planes to fly over and drop bombs on, or perform in aerial combat with their planes.

I strongly suggest you play it.

WafflesHouse ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:11:40 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

roninjedi ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:28:28 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I do think they have a lot of stuff going for them even if their construction menu is a little daunting at first. But i just can't seem to get into it as much as i can terraria.

legos_on_the_brain ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:33:39 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I think the problem is that there is little incentive to build a base. At least with how far I have gotten. You just bounce around trying to upgrade whatever you have to the next tier, so you can go to a harder planet and do it again.

ryphos ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:46:15 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Agreed, and not only that but starbound gives you little incentive to go back and explore previous planets/areas after you get what you want out of them. Terraria feels more open world on just one world than starbound does with an infinity.

I liked it, but it was a but short.

FinalMantasyX ยท 116 points ยท Posted at 17:31:48 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It does, but once you play it you realize that it's really just good in concept. Scribblenauts is a great concept, but complete and absolute freedom stifles creativity and dramatically knocks down the entertainment value.

It's not fun to think of clever solutions to things when there are so many options. You're not challenged at all, you're just forcing yourself to use non-standard solutions. A ladder can solve tons of puzzles in the game, but that's boring. But there's really no incentive to sit there and try to come up with anything better.

Emperor_Z ยท 98 points ยท Posted at 18:07:57 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I think that finding some of the ridiculous stuff that the developers included as solutions is a lot of fun.

For example, there was an old lady who complained that her legs were tired. Instead of giving her a chair, I added an adjective to her. "Legless".

Puzzle solved!

But there's really no incentive to sit there and try to come up with anything better.

You have to think of Scribnlenauts like a sandbox game. All sandbox games do not inherently have much to offer for end-game content, it's up to the user to make their own goals. Once you play Scribblenauts like a sandbox game instead of an RPG platformer, it becomes a lot more enjoyable.

The problem I had with the game once I got past the initial interest in spawning anything I could think of, was the fact that there are no "goals" to come up with because the game is still extremely limited in what you can do.

Sure you can spawn in a bunch of shit that might interact in a slight way, but in the end, all you have is a bunch of shit that might be interacting in a certain way and not anything impressive like you come up with in other sandbox games

FinalMantasyX ยท -6 points ยท Posted at 17:39:45 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

I do think of it as a sandbox game. My point is that it's bad as a sandbox game. There's no incentive to do anything but easy answers, and you have to force yourself to come up with "fun" solutions to puzzles. It's like if a mario game let you just run to the goal with no obstacles or jumps required, but you could optionally jump up to a higher level that has difficulty. But then if you fall, you still have the flat surface, so there's no challenge anyway. It's badly designed.

Good sandbox games have limitations or progression. Very, very few games where you can "do anything" are actually engaging, ignoring games where you're building things.

I'm not 100% sure you understand what the "sandbox" in "sandbox game" means. It's meant to be a creative game about experimenting with options. "forcing yourself" to come up with fun solutions is kind of the point.

TheDeadlySinner ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 18:17:41 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

If you understood that it was a sandbox game, you definitely wouldn't be comparing it to Mario, which is almost as far from sandbox as you can get.

FinalMantasyX ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 18:46:45 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I'm...comparing it to a hypothetical mario game. To describe why 'sandbox' does not excuse 'poorly designed'. Too open = not good. This applies to all genres. Having absolutely no limitations destroys entertainment value.

worldDev ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 19:03:43 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Do you know what a sand box is? A box of sand kids play in. You use your own imagination to come up with limitations. You can complain about nobody telling you what to do, or you can go build a castle.

FinalMantasyX ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:07:27 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I know...what a sandbox is.

I am saying that when a sandbox video game does not limit the player whatsoever but still presents them with "challenges", there's no difficulty and there's no reason to go outside the box.

Scribblenauts has goals. It is not like literally playing in a box of sand. You have to beat the level, you have to collect the star things, you have to satisfy NPCs with extremely basic desires. The game expects you to meet these "challenges", but it does not limit how you do it, and the end result is a lack of difficulty and no incentive to do anything special and no satisfaction from completing goals.

penguin_gun ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:18:59 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

So would you call Just Cause 3 a bad sandbox game too?

FinalMantasyX ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:41:57 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

No. Just Cause 3 has limitations. It has consequences for actions, limited ammo, damageable vehicles, monetary requirements to do whatever the game will let you, etc. It is not simply "here you go, do a thing".

BlazeFaia ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:18:36 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I think you'd appreciate Scribblenauts Unmasked instead. It punishes you for coming up with the same solution within that world you visited. (Ie you can use Flying in Gotham and Flying in Metropolis. But you can't use Flying in two different Gotham missions.)

I personally hated that limitation. But it sounds like the answer to your problem with the older games.

Filobel ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:17:48 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

So, like Mario 3D world?

Seakawn ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:24:49 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

Good sandbox games have limitations or progression.

Name any sandbox game that exists, and I'll name you the limitations and progression it has--including Scribblenauts. So, you'll have to go further and specify what you mean by limitations and progression.

Because, with that said, if you name "good" sandbox games, it seems very easy for me to be able to spin the same criticism on those games as you used to criticize scribblenauts.

A good sandbox game should generally be defined as a setup for a game with little to no objective, in which the focus is on building, experimenting, and/or generally just messing around with the game's objects+mechanics in whichever way that interests you. It is just the tools for what you want to do.

Giving definitions for what is a good or bad sandbox game seems on par with giving definitions for what is enjoyable or unenjoyable music. It's too subjective to make objective claims about it which are substantially meaningful, and thus seems like a counterproductive point to put effort into making, unless you're really specific (e.g. I liked that you gave an example of what a good sandbox game is after talking about what makes SN a bad sandbox game, but you didn't go nearly far enough to be specific and properly break down your logic). If you're making a bold claim, you've got to put in the effort to substantiate it. What you've said just isn't sufficient reasoning.

Kittenchild ยท 31 points ยท Posted at 18:31:30 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

That's why I loved the first game for the DS, it docked points from your score for using items that you had recently used.

Stijakovic ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 22:24:39 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The first game was the pinnacle of the series. It was the only one that encompassed "do anything" with actual puzzle-platforming. The second game added adjectives to allow even more freedom, but the puzzles were extremely limiting in their attempt to showcase this new feature. Like, say you have to wash a car. The first game would allow anything that cleans or anything wet to work (mop, maid, raincloud), while the second game would only allow different variations of sponges or towels. And of course by Scribblenauts Unlimited the franchise has ditched gameplay completely and become a sandbox. Fine for some people, but I wish the series had taken a different direction. The most enjoyment I ever got from a game was figuring out the fewest unique items needed to beat every level in the first game.

In Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas you have to assault a warehouse being used to secretly sell weapons.

I had all sorts of fun finding the multiple ways to get into that place. Blast through the front doors. Get a van, climb it and hop over the back wall. Snipe the guards from afar. Hire some NPC friends to come shoot the place up.

FinalMantasyX ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 18:50:42 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yes, but that's a completely absolutely different situation. There are limitations there. You do not have absolute freedom, you're limited by what weapons you can use, the locations of enemies, your character's stats, the structure of the building, etc. Scribblenauts is far too freeform to have limitations that make gameplay more satisfying.

You can beat half the levels with Dark Matter. I bet if I tried hard enough maybe every level..

shrediknight ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:38:12 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah, the game loses its charm once you learn that a combination of "wings" "rope" and "Cthulhu" can be used to solve most of the puzzles.

Seakawn ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:33:51 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I can understand the game losing a level of difficulty for that type of insight, but I can not understand how that would in any way affect its charm.

That's kind of like saying, "this game X lost its luster/charm/potential/wonder when you learn that you can just put in a gameshark code to get to the last level."

I say that's similar because the response is the same to both: simply don't do that. And, voila! Charm returned (as if it was ever lost).

barmasters ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:32:33 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

A gameshark is a cheating device, it is not a part of the game itself. What you're saying is akin to me saying my favorite book lost its charm when I dipped it in black paint and couldn't read the words anymore.

Any game can be made amusing if you impose your own rules on it, but that's not the point. If a game's design allows me to exploit it in easy and obvious ways, that's a flaw in the game itself. I shouldn't have to restrict myself to have fun. If a game makes me invulnerable, I can impose my own limits and say if I get hit once I restart the level. I might have made the game more fun for myself, but that doesn't make the underlying game less broken.

I think the problem with Scribblenauts is because of its wide open nature, it's extremely easy to exploit. It rewards creative thinking in the exact same way it rewards lazy breaking of the mechanics. There are games that straddle this problem much better where I felt like exploiting the systems was imaginative and rewarding, the original Incredible Machine games come to mind. When I broke the puzzles in that game, I felt like I was outsmarting the game and being clever. When I broke levels in Scribblenauts with the same tricks over and over again, it felt like lazy design.

MumrikDK ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:51:50 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It kind of is, until you actually start playing the levels. It's the kind of thing where the sandbox has so many possibilities to it, but you'll find a few basic methods that just work almost all the time.

Technically, you're correct, but a lot of jurisdictions make suicide attempts illegal, with criminal penalties and the whole bit.

Here's a relatively recent example from the US military...

Military court wrestles with punishing suicide attempts

MichaelSilverV ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:51:28 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Military functions a bit differently though. As far as I know, no US state has laws against suicide or attempted suicide.

Is not the trend to make it illegal in more countries? As it actually helps to stop people committing/attempting suicide and help them into care?

MichaelSilverV ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:04:26 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The progress is actually towards decriminalizing it. If countries want to implement forced institutionalization of suicidal people (in itself a controversial topic), they can do so outside of the penal code.

lackofcommitme ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:42:36 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I've never seen an attempted suicide prosecuted. Mostly it's illegal so cops can kick down a door to stop the person without a warrant.

the_omega99 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:59:15 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Even when it's legal, they can still try and stop you from killing yourself. I imagine that it's rather illegal to be leaving a dead body on a street and some other side effects of suicide, so that could be a legal justification.

But mostly people just accept that we'd want to stop suicidal people and make sure they've got help first (anyone who truly wants to kill themselves isn't going to be stoppable, anyway).

There are a huge amount of different models in the game... but because the amount of words is far beyond that, a lot of models are reused - but typically only for the more obscure words that they doubt most people would discover and use anyway.

That said, one of my favourite things is to just keysmash and then go through all the word suggestions and choose the ones that sound weirdest to find out what they are. There are a shocking amount of really insanely obscure words to choose from. I wonder how they compiled them all.

Airway ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:52:34 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Using this method I have made things that don't even sound like real words, but they end up being some little food item or tool or something that serves no real purpose.

That's what impresses me the most, that they bothered to put in so many things that would almost certainly go entirely unnoticed.

OfficialTacoLord ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:19:16 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yes and no. They would have to draw them but they aren't animated. They're just sprites.

adamsmith93 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:16:16 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

But then wouldn't they still have to do a ton of sprites? Not animations, that was worded wrong.

StraY_WolF ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:24:01 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yes, but in the end the interaction is simple.

OfficialTacoLord ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:01:43 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah but it's pretty simple. Mostly it seems there are only one or two sprites for each object at most. Say you had a living gun it would just been on picture kind of bobbing around so you would only need one sprite. If you had a person I imagine they have a default template that they draw over and it will animate the arms and legs for them.

yaomon17 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 19:46:11 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

A lot of modular animation. Scaling and recolors done in-engine. Still a ton of work though.

Ew. And if at all possible, try to make a blood on/off toggle to get past the higher rating rating while still appealing to older audiences. If possible. I have no idea how many clickety-clacks of a keyboard that would take. Probably between 5 and a quadrillion.

Yegie ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 20:00:24 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Hi, unless the rules were changed recently an on off toggle still raises the rating. See the Oblivion scandal.

ndstumme ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 20:13:04 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I thought the Oblivion scandal was them raising the rating for sexual content after someone made a topless mod for the game.

Yegie ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 20:26:10 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Close, the mod did not add nude content, the nude content was put in the game by the devs then covered up with a bra. The mod unlocked content shipped with the game, and so the rating was raised.

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:26:44 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Rating go up?

FoldedDice ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 19:54:23 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

One of the Star Trek movies involved an assassination scene thet had huge gobs of blood floating around in zero-G, which couldn't be done at the rating they were going for. So they changed the blood's color and kept the rest of the scene exactly how it was, gratuitous violence and all.

The ratings board didn't care as long as the "blood" wasn't red. It's a really absurd system.

Seakawn ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:04:43 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It's a really absurd system.

I agree. In fact, I'd go further to say that calling it absurd is an understatement. I'm... not quite sure how to properly express just how asinine their ratings are rationalized.

ESRB could be the sole reason Scientologists think that brain science is a farce. Think about it.

Scientologist: Hey man, you really need to think twice about using our e-meters for your problems, because what you're saying and how you're suggesting to cope with it isn't how your psychology works... psychology is actually a sham. A pseudoscience.

Client: Uh, actually, it's a legitimate science. And despite being a soft science, it is fundamentally coherent and accurate.

Cruise: Nah, man, that's what people want you to think... but just look at ESRB! Think about the logic they use to justify their ratings! It's bullshit!

Client: Well... you're right, you do have a point...

HawkMan79 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:33:12 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Seakawn ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:59:39 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

why care about game ratings anyway ?

Pretty sure the people at ESRB are making money. So, pretty sure that's why they care about ratings.

And despite how it seems, some parents do care about ratings and don't let their 7 year old son play Dead Space just to go back to the game store to yell at the clerk for how a child shouldn't play a game like that. So, ratings aren't there for everybody, they are there for the few people who make productive use out of them.

Devil's advocate: green blood won't trigger people who think gore is gross, or people who have experienced gore at some point in their life. Human psychology has a visceral reaction to red blood that not everyone is ready for.

Granted, there are 10+ games where you can do horrible things to characters as long as they have green blood, but Doom is rated M because when someone is shot there's a little red spurt for all of five milliseconds, because the ESRB doesn't make sense.

Scot Adams (the Dilbert guy) got flak for having a cop shooting his gun off for no logical reason. So he change it having a cop shooting bullets from his doughnut for no logical reason.

It got through.

Given everything I hear about Scot Adams and his online presence, I kind of immediately assume that every positive mention of Scot Adams online was written by the man himself... Scot.

It's cool guys, you can be a 10 yearold scribblenazi as long as there's no blood.

In all seriousness though scribblenauts gives you the power to do a lot of horrible things sans blood. Feed people to hungry sharks, release hungry dinosaurs, stage a massacre in the middle of a school, etc.

Better would be 127.0.0.1, since some routers don't use the 192.168 ip addresses, but every OS knows 127.0.0.1 as localhost.

I'm not saying that every kid will do it, just that it's possible.

You have to be a pretty horrible person or have a twisted sense of humor to actually do these things, although scribblenauts does give you a pretty broad brush to accomplish things.

The nature of sandboxes is that they allow you to make horrible choices. Like blowing up everything in minecraft, or starting a forest fire, or mob grinders that would make peta cringe.

I think the important thing is to understand what's real and what's not, or whether or not you address your kid making horrible choices.

That decision was made at a higher level than I was privy to. I think the main issue was that they were worried the physical puzzles were getting harder and harder to keep fresh and usually pretty difficult themselves. Plus, usually able to be solved with a very small set of objects (helicopter + rope). This design ensured that all the effort spent making the objects and adjectives was better utilized, ensuring they were more likely to created by the user. Also, focused / embraced the sandbox nature that people seemed to enjoy.

CallMeFeed ยท 182 points ยท Posted at 17:25:49 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

This is why I couldn't stand the original Scribblenauts-- you had to clear each level in 3 unique ways, but really all it boiled down to was Helicopter+Rope, Pterodactyl+Chain, and Pegasus+Cord

Chocozumo ยท 84 points ยท Posted at 17:37:38 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Jet Pack + Shrink Ray

The amount of metal doors you could cheese by shrinking them and riding something underneath it was great.

Honestly that's what I loved about Scribblenauts. Finding unique ways to cheese through levels was as fun as doing it the "right" way.

dougiefresh1233 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 20:32:08 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Nice. I used to spawn baskets by the star then attach a pair of handcuffs to both objects which would cause the star to call into the basket. And then I could just drag the basket next to Maxwell and get the star out

Not true, sometimes you need to use rope, and/or adjectives.

What's amazing is the number of puzzles in Unlimited/Super that can be solved using only the application of adjectives to other things in the puzzle.

Yeah I have Scribblenauts unlimited and unmasked (even though I'm sure it's a game to help kids learn to spell) and it took like 2 hours to get through the main missions. Now if I go on it I just use it to spawn in different superhero characters and see who wins, and then just try messing with the adjectives to see if that changes the tide of the fight.

I didn't care for the original's puzzles. Too many things didn't work the way I expected them to, so I ended up using the same reliable tools over and over. Ropes and jetpacks for almost every level

Sorry for the tough love, friend, but I find it strange to extrapolate a subjective opinion as something that applies to "adults." Even as a mere generalization.

I loved Star Wars I-VI, but for some reason they decided to let Disney make VII and as a result it lost all possible appeal to adults.

Using "me" and "adults" interchangeably seems like a big deal. I assume that you must assume that others will assume you're generalizing. But what you did is a little more messy than mere generalizing... if you were merely generalizing in a typical way, you would have just said,

For some reason they choose to eliminate that aspect of the game entirely and as a result it lost all possible appeal.

But instead of stopping there, you went further to specify, "to adults."

Why? Seems like a subconscious ego thing to me (i.e., "instead of asserting my opinion as my opinion, or even generalizing my opinion, instead I'm gonna express this opinion as the general consensus among anyone who is adult.") The reason I suspect this is because "adults" isn't even one step removed from terms you don't wanna be caught using outside of /r/iamverysmart, such as "mature," "intelligent," or other similarly arrogant expressions for conveying a subjective opinion...instead, it's on par. Consider the following and try to find significance in the contrast to your original comment:

For some reason they choose to eliminate that aspect of the game entirely and as a result it lost all possible appeal to people who have good taste in games.

The original Scribblenauts was a puzzle game and was actually fun. For some reason they choose to eliminate that aspect of the game entirely and as a result it lost all possible appeal to mature people.

The original Scribblenauts was a puzzle game and was actually fun. For some reason they choose to eliminate that aspect of the game entirely and as a result it lost all possible appeal to anyone who isn't a child.

There is no contrast! Those are the same sentiments. Especially the last one, for it is literally the same expression as what you said, down to the semantics. But would you have considered phrasing it that way? There can be utility in generalizing, but there is no utility in your type of generalization. I apologize for not knowing a better way to express this concern...

IAdventurer01 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:11:06 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

For as massive as the dictionary seems, my creative solutions for puzzle began to rarely exist, or were a little too off-kilter for the game to recognize it as a solution though.

It was great fun for a while, but after I resigned myself to normal solutions that the game was begging for, it lost its appeal quickly.

This was Unlimited though. By any chance are the other ones better at this?

I was doing the Hospital segment.

A living heart attack was attacking a nurse. I facepalmed. It's a heart attack. <_<

So, I summoned a Gun to attack and kill the heart. The next segment was a doctor and the Black Knight from Monty Python. The doctor said he needed new equipment for the hospital. So I drop the gun and...

THE DOCTOR PICKS THE FUCKING GUN UP AND USES THE GUN TO HEAL THE BLACK KNIGHT.

I know there's a limit to how much can be simulated in a puzzle game, but the premise Scribblenauts fascinates me. I really yearn for a big-budget Scribblenauts for adults, which uses a similar cartoon style but with much more depth. Don't think of it as a game, because anybody who plays Scribblenauts knows that some items are more useful than others. Treat this hypothetical title as a software toy that lets you do non-intuitive solutions with an entire dictionary at your disposal.

It will never happen, but I still dream of it. There are actually some very clever things in Scribblenauts itself. Play around with the "Communist" adjective to see how much the devs thought of. Wouldn't it be great to have a more mature clone of this game?

mutatersalad1 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:51:24 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Well when people only say things to try to look smart and deep and scathing and do it absolutely horribly (e.g. that guy who made the parent comment) they get called out for it by being called edgy. Because that's what they're trying to be.

Seakawn ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:20:42 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

To be fair, human intent is a bit more complicated than the confidence you have in asserting that they were only trying to look smart and deep by actively trying to be edgy.

Are you even considering that they made that statement in a casually benign way with no substantial motive? Or perhaps a more respectable motive? Or perhaps a humorous motive? Or, perhaps, other motives we can suppose if we use our imagination in attempt to be less narrow about it?

It seems quite edgy to assert that comments one may find edgy are exclusively made with the intent of trying to appear smart and deep.

Snakebite7 ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 17:06:30 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Ah, may bad. This sounded almost exactly like a classic Carlin bit:

"Why, why, why, why is it that most of the people who are against abortion are people you wouldn't wanna fuck in the first place? Boy, these conservatives are really something, aren't they? They're all in favor of the unborn. They will do anything for the unborn. But once you're born, you're on your own. Pro-life conservatives are obsessed with the fetus from conception to nine months. After that, they don't want to know about you. They don't want to hear from you. No nothing. No neonatal care, no day care, no head start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing. If you're preborn, you're fine; if you're preschool, you're fucked. Conservatives don't give a shit about you until you reach military age. Then they think you're just fine. Just what they've been looking for. Conservatives want live babies so they can raise them to be dead soldiers."

T2112 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:13:43 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Hey, that is similar do I get your point.

But it's pretty damn true. And you can extend it by pointing out that once you are done with any military service you go back on the list of people no one actually give a shit about, just ask the VA.

mutatersalad1 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:40:40 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Conservatives tend to support more care for children, just not shitty parents that have kids when they can't afford to. The problem is they want to be able to give children assistance without giving their parents assistance, which is simply not possible, so they'd rather the kid go without too since that's the only way to deny the parents that extra assistance.

I'm not taking a stance on it I'm just stating facts.

Snakebite7 ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 19:55:29 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

What specific policies have they enacted to give more care for the children? Saying that they support more care, but doing nothing, realistically means that they don't really care.

The idea that they'd rather let a child go without rather than risk the off chance of helping a bad parent is basically accepting that you care more about avoiding spending than minimizing suffering.

Conservatives tend to support more care for children

What's your reasoning here? I don't necessarily disagree. I just have absolutely no idea what makes you think this is not only apparent, but further that it's actually true. Maybe you're right, I'm just interested in how you know. And if you don't know, I'm still interested in why you think this at least seems to be true.

mutatersalad1 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:42:27 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

All the conversations I have with older, conservative people. They talk a lot about how they'd be fine with more money going to kids who need it, but they don't want those kids parents to be able to spend it on themselves. That's pretty much universal in all of the older people I talk to in a very conservative city. That's also the sentiment popular with conservative people on online interactions.

hoochyuchy ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:37:01 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Nah, the government doesn't care about anyone unless they have money. Kids don't have money, so they don't care about them.

Scribblenauts. You have a magic notebook and with it you can summon pretty much anything. Except blood, drugs and sex toys.

Scribblenautns unlimited, pretty nice game if you ask me.

sparky662 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:11:08 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I try to solve as many puzzles as possible with dead babies. It's surprising how often it works. I've used dead babies as pizza toppings, wedding presents, dog food, wall decorations, cannonballs, there really is no limit to what you can achieve with a few dead babies!

I find the adjective 'dead' to be very useful actually. Being bullied? Now he's dead. Old man won't return your ball? Now he's dead. Need to sneak past the security guard? Now he's dead.

There are a few moments when I have surprised myself at how dark this game can be. It makes it all the more surprising when words like 'blood' aren't allowed.

[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:31:47 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

You would be amazed at how many problems in Scribblenauts can be solved via dead baby

I will forever standby the theory that Scribblenauts takes place in the same dream universe as Drawn to Life. In which case Mike is a sick, sick person.

damthatriver18 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:21:50 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

They should make an R rated Scribblenauts game.

AdeonWriter ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:24:15 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Probably wasn't on purpose. The relevent rules were probably

-Canibals want to eat people.

-Babies are people.

Cheese_Loaf ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:29:20 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Also a scribblenauts "realist" kills God if he touches him. There's some controversial logic right there.

Things that I learned from watching my brother play this game years ago:

For a character that wants to become better at basketball - "Tall" is an attribute you can apply that will achieve your goal. "Black" is not.

With a section that involves traversing a pool of water, it will offer a different suggestion if you type in "giant flying rubber duck." It did suggest "dick" in place of "duck." Propelled forward by curiosity, the suggestion was taken, and it brought forth a guy in a trench coat.

MagicMert ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:20:30 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

elemjay ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:04:11 on January 14, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

Yeah, I know it's meant to be a dick, like a private detective. It was just funny that 'dick' was a suggested replacement for 'duck,' so curiosity pushed that one forward.

Create or set something as a 'cannibal'. They will start eating every other person, including you so watch out.

Create 'bacon baby' or other various forms of <food> person and other things will eat them!

And as for wings, type 'fast wings' and you will go much faster!

Katastic_Voyage ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:34:31 on January 13, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

I wish Scribblenauts had more adults levels, or at least user made levels.

By adult I mean, more steps and critical thinking required. Think Mario. "Get to the castle, get in the castle, fight any enemies, fight the boss, reach the princess, get the princess out alive." All those are steps that could have unique solutions in a broader arc. Restrict your abilities beneath that of a God, and now you've got to come up with a solution. You could even do a "pick 50 random words" mode so each time you've got a different bag of tricks to try.

That's a game I'd like to play.

[edit] According to the dev in the thread, apparently the original HAD some mechanics but was removed in later versions by higher ups.

[edit] Someone make a Skyrim Scribblenauts.
