B) I don't care. Porn is porn, no matter how much there is. Same as a car is a car, it doesn't matter how many there are.
C) Stop using me to justify your addiction. There are lots of people who don't watch porn, both men and women.
How does me making a Game of Thrones reference turn into me being accused of a porn addiction? I watch a low-fantasy TV show grounded in reality that just so happens to not shy away from the human anatomy.
I don't watch it for the tits, believe it or not; hell, half the time I don't even notice because it's not the focus of the scene. I watch it because it's a complex story about rival families vying for power, beautiful cinematography and fight choreography, terrific special effects, and because it's not your typical fantasy story.
So, please, before you accuse me of being a porn addict again, how about you take your head out of your ass and realize that at least 75% of men and at least 40% of women watch more porn than I do, and that's including your consideration of TV shows with a bit of nudity as porn.
Also, I'd highly recommend the show, but I'd recommend not skipping the nude scenes because there are some really good character development scenes that include varying degrees of it.

Yeah, it seems like he's making a different point with his example than with the saying.
For "it's not how you say, it's how you say it", a decent example would be jokingly saying "I'm gonna kill you" to your best friend as opposed to "I'm gonna kill you" to a lone person in a dark alley.

Not really imo. He's changing the actual words, so it basically is "what you say" in that case. If you wanted a good example, you'd have to use the same words, just different inflection. Kinda hard through text though.

No, both sentences say the same thing, just differently. The "how" is in the wording used. Both statements say that the face can "stop time", they simply say it with different words.
Okay, what's wrong with "love at first sight"? It happened to me and a gal I met at a wedding, we were married exactly one year later, and that was 17 years ago.
While I'll admit that you have a point with the "playing hard to get" line, which would have made more sense several decades ago but nowadays is kinda weird, the "I'll never let you go" and "never give up on love" are perhaps a bit sappy, but unless they are used in a weird context I would not call them creepy.

The problem with love at first sight: when it's a completely unreciprocated feeling. "Wow, he/she's absolutely gorgeous, I must be in love." Yeah, we've all seen the movies and read the books and wish for some kind of romanticized fantasy life, but when you're the only one feeling it and you become obsessed with the idea because "I fell in love with her when I first laid eyes upon her!"
This person doesn't know you, and you don't know them. You don't know what relationships they have. You don't know what they're thinking or whether or not they find you attractive. So, are you "in love" because you made eye contact and smiled at each other?
Sure, it's happened for some people, just like all the typical romantic tropes. At some point in time it has absolutely worked out that way for someone. But looking at someone and just "knowing you have a connection" is an absolutely unhealthy expectation to have, one which is reflected in those afflicted with unhealthy psychological tendencies like stalkers.
As for never letting someone go or never giving up on love, it's creepy for the same reasons. "I'll never let you go" or "never give up on love" even though they broke up with you or never felt the same about you to begin with. Again, absolutely unhealthy expectations to have for another person if you barely even know each other, and a common theme in cases of stalking and abuse when love becomes a possessive expectation.
Love as it exists in the movies: two people interact for a couple of hours and fall desperately in love. Over the course of this process, one person proceeds to take drastic actions in pursuit of the other, including hyper-dramatic displays of obsession with this person they barely know and/or stalking them. Somehow, they end up living happily ever after. Yes, of course this isn't every love story ever told (going back to Shakespeare, who really got how tragically fucked up the idea of love can be when two star-crossed lovers gaze upon each other from across a room), but it's highly typical.
This is what kids have grown up watching for decades.
The reality of love, to me: you find someone attractive, but you aren't emotionally connected to them just by seeing them. You decide to approach this person and see how it goes - maybe they'll have a compatible personality and find you attractive as well, or maybe not. You get to know them. You explore each other's life and emotions. The more you learn about each other, the more you know just how compatible you two are together. At any point up until now, you might discover that your relationship just doesn't work and the feelings you had weren't quite up to snuff with reality. But, if things don't fall apart, you may then realize that you can both be vulnerable with each other because you trust and support one another as something more than friends. That's when you realize you're in love.
I'm not sure whether you are expecting too much of love or too little. Look, "knowing when you have a connection" is perfectly okay, why would you go on second or even first date with someone if you don't feel a connection? It just seems so cynical to me to see all these so-called tropes as creepy, and it seems so demanding to think that you have to go through this huge rigmarole to realize you're in love.
I'm not saying that my wife and I were high school sweethearts who saw each other in the cafeteria and just knew we were soulmates, far from it. We grew up thousands of miles apart in the radically different worlds of the Pacific Northwest and the deepest of the Deep South. We did have in common horrible childhoods that we felt lucky to survive, and we both made some very poor (actually, disastrous) relationship choices thereafter. BUT, those choices were not from thinking that we had found "a connection," or that we were made for each other or that we were in love at first sight. With the worst ones for each of us, they were more the result of finding someone attractive and then going through the whole rigmarole you described, only to realize that we were dating/living with/married to completely psychotic jackholes. I mean, I could tell some stories that people on reddit would say "dude, no way, you're making that up." To say that we both had had a LOT of life experience before we found each other is the grandest of understatements.
BUT, we were fortunate enough to have still retained the tiniest bit of innocence, the least little bit of belief in the idea (or ideal) of romance. Partly, I guess it's because we are both creative types, she's an artist when she's not nursing and I've dabbled in writing when I'm not making a living otherwise, so maybe we were predisposed to the idea of thinking with our heart. After a LOT of bad experience, we both grew wiser, and one day our we were introduced at our best friends' wedding, and baby, it was truly LOVE at first sight.
Our experience had made us disappointed, and had even made us pretty much give up. In fact, we often talk about how perhaps we had to get to the point that we had given up before we could find each other. I'm not saying that love at first sight is something that you have to earn, at least not for everyone, but it was for my wife and me. But that's where the story begins, not ends, because just like an old love song, we had others trying to tear us apart. In fact, they fully succeeded in keeping us apart for several months. So here's my first bit of advice: do NOT listen to your friends or family, they may or may not have your best interests at heart, but they are not YOU and do not have to live with the consequences of their bad decisions about how you should live your life (yes, I am the overly protective father of one boy and three girls and I am still saying this; caveat - does not apply if you are a teenager and doubly does not apply if you are MY teenager).
My second bit of advice, which will probably make you stop reading, is to pray. No, I'm not saying this to get you to go to church or even to believe in God, but let me explain. Both my wife and I grew up in typically kinda religious American households, mine Baptist/whatever and her's Catholic/whatever. I stopped attending church in the military, she stopped about high school (not much diff). A couple of decades pass, a lot of really horrible relationships come and go, and we both simultaneously gave up on "dating," and started praying. Look, I don't care if you pray to Jesus or Allah or Buddha or the Moon or Charles Darwin (hey, I believe fully in evolution, I just threw that last one in for kicks and giggles), but believe me, it does help. Anyways, we both had suffered horrible childhood trauma and been in abusive relationships and had given up, but really, we had not quite given up. In actuality, we had just decided that we were no good in directing our own love life, so we were leaving it up to God/the universe/Darwin/etc. Lo and behold, it worked. I mean, it wasn't immediate, but it was sooooo close to immediate that it seem like it was. Thus my advice is this: give up and pray.
So, what has happened in the past almost two decades since we met? Well, we've had four unbelievably amazing, talented, brilliantly smart, talented and absolutely beautiful children. My wife often remarks that our children are our contribution to the world, and if it were our only contribution it would be one helluva one. That extremely weighty contribution is not our only one, though, since we have enriched the lives of many other people since we became man and wife (not bragging, seriously, just trying to explain how our relationship has worked to the betterment of ourselves and humanity). Now, does that mean that we have lived "happily ever after"? Hell no! Good lord, we've fought all of the ordinary battles, such as the loss of others that we love, the scary-as-shit battle of having our first newborn in need of immediate heart surgery, the money battles, the loss of the primary wage earner's job battle (yep, that was me), the debt battle (yep, my fault again), and a plethora other battles that are a little too personal to post on reddit even though this is anonymous. But seriously, and I do mean this in a big way, part of the reason that we have been able to tackle all of those challenges head-on is because of the fact that we KNOW, all caps bold italics underlined and in bright red text, we know that we were meant for each other. That, my friend, is what love at first sight is all about.
So yeah, even though we had multiple people who definitely knew better and who had our best interests at heart telling us to call it off (and to my eternal sorrow we actually listened to them for a time), we decided to "never give up on love." We each did let each other go, for a time, but whoever it is that runs this universe decided to forgive us and gave us a very fleeting opportunity to make another go at it (seriously, I'm amazed it worked, trust me, if our story were the plot of a movie you would roll your eyes and say "that would never happen"). But, one year from the weekend we met, we married. It's been 17 years, and this marriage will last the either 2 more seconds or fifty more years we both are alive. It will have produced so much joy and happiness that the world could scarcely be believed to contain it all. All because two people believed that romance was not dead, that love at first sight was real, and that they were literally made for each other.

Because you approached the person you thought was attractive, talked, then decided to try dating to explore the idea of having a connection with this person. This is how dating works for most people, that's why it's dating. Tons of folks don't stay together with the first person they ever asked out.
According to a study of 2,000 people: "The average woman will kiss 15 men, enjoy two long-term relationships and have her heartbroken twice before she meets 'The One', a study has revealed. Researchers found she will also suffer four disaster dates and be stood up once before she finds one she's happy to stick with. But she will also have been in love twice, lived with one ex-partner and had four one night stands. In comparison, men face being stood up twice and having six one night stands before they meet their ideal partner."
Another statistic: " If you get married or move in with someone at the age of 18 then thereโs a 60% chance youโll divorce or break up." - A case for a lot of the "first true loves".
Which is to say nothing of cheaters and people that have fallen out of love in their marriage and choose to stay together for the sake of their kids. Consider: why is it so often such a big surprise that the man or woman can't fathom how someone they loved so dearly could think so poorly of them in response?
People think they're in love, then they realize they aren't. This happens all the damn time. Your personal experience speaks nothing for the statistics and psychology of the real world. But if you want some nuggets of my own personal experiences to color the conversation... I've known at least a couple dozen people that either thought they were in deeply, terribly in love with someone that felt nothing similar in return, and people that were victims of those that felt "love" gave permission to be vile human beings.
Some of these entirely anecdotal examples from my personal experience:
"This is the perfect girl, my first love. We like all the same things, she came on to me first when I was too shy to approach, she changed my whole world! I'm so giddy!" This crashed and burned horribly when the girl got bored of him and he basically cut ties with everyone he knew for 6 months out of rage and sadness. We thought he was dead. The power of love.
A girl I knew, her first serious relationship. They were like the power couple or whatever - she thought the guy saw past the physical and into her soul/personality. The first guy that didn't just want her for her body. Well, turned out he was passing pictures he took of her around to his buddies.
One of my coworkers has a bit of an admirer - the brother of one of her oldest friends. The guy did all the typical romance stuff, sent her flowers, got her chocolates and toys, etc. for years. Even proposed to her twice. She just doesn't like him, period. She's told him repeatedly to stop over the years. Yet this is ongoing, even as she has had a steady boyfriend for the last couple of years. He's told her, time and time again, that he KNOWS they were absolutely meant for each other. I told her to get a restraining order.
The people in my own family, who have made death threats and shed each other's blood. Still together, in "love", still flip the switch to absolute rage at a moment's notice talking about how worthless each other really is in their eyes. THE most religious people I know.
Oh, people that have been raped by the ones that "loved" them, because they didn't love back and just "didn't get it".
So, yeah. Two people falling in love at first sight doesn't mean crap to me when it absolutely does not happen to the vast majority. I also know that people win the lottery, but it doesn't mean I'm gonna win the lottery too.
You are absolutely lucky to an astronomical degree when you stop and think for a moment about the millions of innocent children starving and dying painfully in underdeveloped worlds that will never have the chance to experience real love. Or the billions that live in societies where marriage is still a sacred and traded commodity controlled by their parents. Or the uncounted many lost in the horrors of the sex slave trade. As a religious person, I'm fortunate to live in a first-world nation, but I'll be damned if I surrender myself to romanticism in the face of the harsh realities of our world, from the practical to emotional.
Does it matter whether love at first sight or even falling in love happens to the majority of the population? Love is not a democracy. No, it does not matter if 1% or 99% fall in love at all or fall in love at first sight, the truth of love is very real, and the truth of love at first sight is equally real and equally important. Love at first sight saved my life, and I will not abandon it simply because there are others who have not experienced it. Love at first sight is important to protect as a concept because it is instrumental in understanding what love is, and that love exists at all. People confuse love and sex all of the time, that's not love's fault.
I truly appreciate the personal examples, but I don't want to play the "my love life is/was way more screwed up than that game," so let me play the "hypothetically speaking" game. Hypothetically, let's say that there's this guy who is very, very sweet, smart, considerate, good looking, tall dark and handsome. True, he's partly Cherokee, and grew up in the US where Indians=trash, but he hides it well. Imagine that boy lives an absolute hellish childhood where it would have been a blessing in many ways (to outsiders) if his mother had died in childbirth, except that he of course loves her all the more for her mental disease. Imagine a broken family with a redneck stepfather, a emotionally unavailable father who screwed every woman in sight (and who actually did abandon the boy and his sister for a time), one emotionally unavailable grandmother and a step-grandfather who raped the boy's mother. Yes, raped. We could add other things that would seem unbelievable and I could go on, but you get the picture. Oh, lest I forget, let's make this kid very intelligent and artistic, and let's throw in some old-style social ostracizing and bullying from 2nd grade until adulthood. This is one extremely screwed up kid, and I haven't even gone into detail.
So, this hypothetical person is really, truly screwed up is probably going to become either a priest/preacher (as his mother predicted he would, after going to several psychics) or he is probably going to go to prison. I mean, isn't that the template? But let's imagine that this one person decides that he will transcend all of this bullshit and become just a normal person, whatever that means. And let's imagine that he dedicates his life to this purpose, and decides that he must somehow have a higher purpose. Let's imagine that the boy decides, what the hell, let's live life to it's fullest, let's jump out of airplanes, let's read poetry, let's shoot down airplanes, let's rebuild a car engine. Let's romance girls, let's go to a museum. Let's read books, hell, let's write them.
That boy, in his 20's, finally hit reality. What is reality? Nothing more than the point of realization that his life sucked no more or less than several billion concurrent lives, and about 100 billion historical lives. He finally realized that there were people in Africa and Argentina and Zimbabwe and Washington DC who had lived lives only slightly better and/or an order of magnitude worse than he had lived up until that point, and they were still rocking and rolling. He sees a bumper sticker one day that becomes popular for a time, "Shit Happens," and he says to himself "yeah, that about sums it up." He has an amazing relationship with a musician that he cherishes, but that dies. He has an amazing relationship with a Cuban girl that he cherishes, but dies. On and on, there's the (probably, still not 100 percent sure) bisexual "yes I am a nymphomaniac" girl (seriously, I hate the term for a LOT of reasons, after all I am a father of three girls, just trying to give you an insight into this supposed person's past), the one night stand girl, the girl he cannot quite have, the intellectual/liberal girl, the Catholic big-boobed girl (as she described herself), the father-approved very hot mind-fuck single-mom girl, a bunch of in-between girls, a Montana girl teaching ESL in Japan girl (and really, if she's reading this, she was VERY close to becoming a wife and perhaps she could have not been been such a psycho that night at the Italian restaurant), and so on and so on and so on (should really mention the hot-bod PNW girl from a wealthy family all of whom loved the boy) forth. Hey, there are several girls left out of here, and we are not even into this hypothetical guy's thirties.
Later in life, this is all stuff that this guy would be utterly ashamed of, and would NEVER expect to see connected to him in any way. Reddit is anonymous, right? But let's say that this rather artistic guy for some strange/stupid reason (lack of proper guidance being paramount) decides to become a lawyer. And that he then decides to help people, only to find that there are a LOT of really screwed up people in this world, many of who deserve help but a few of whom are so incredibly evil that even meeting them nearly destroys your life. Yeah.
So, the guy flounders around but for some strange reason doesn't give up entirely. And then, for some strange reason, he meets a gal whose life has been even worse. Hell, it was dramatically worse. For some reason, the moment they meet there is a strange but undeniable attraction. It seems like the entire world is against them, but somehow they overcome it and decide for themselves, "hey, let's hang out together and see what happens."
Really, this couple could school you in an awful lot of life's miseries (I haven't even touched upon the much worse childhood and young adulthood of the girl, which was very abusive, degrading and unrelentingly destructive). BUT, somehow these two people held onto innocence, they believed in the power of "good," and the truly believed that there was such a thing as "true love" and romance. They listened to sappy 70s and 80's love songs and saw a bit of truth in them. From "What a fool believes" to "Wonderful tonight" and many songs in-between, they listened to the poetry of their age, which paled in comparison to the true poetry of earlier ages but which also had to suffice. They compared their own Cold War life experiences to their post-Berlin Wall experiences. They realized something that cannot be stated in a reddit post, or in a book as long as War and Peace. The finally came to a realization of what life really was -- not what it meant, because no one knows that. No, they merely realized what life had to offer them, and as meager an offering as it might be, they took it.
So here we are. You've given me specifics about abuse. Hell, I was dealing with much, much worse shit than that as a first year public defender, which was a cakewalk given my hellacious life -- whether through what I've experienced or through what my clients have experienced, I've seen some unbelievable shit. Regardless of religious beliefs, you must acknowledge that, as a species, we have a unique ability to visit evil upon each other. Yet, we also have a unique ability to see and render in words and pictures the most beautiful truths that have ever been realized. Is beauty greater than truth, or truth greater than beauty? Doesn't matter, if you even understood that sentence it means that you are not only human, but also elevated above those to which truth and beauty are concepts that simply do not matter at all. If truth and beauty matter to you, then love is not far behind. If love matters to you, then how can romance not be an equal value?
Your examples abound with animal desire, which is not love. Yes, there are many that surrender to it, and it is unfortunate for them and many others that they do not have an understanding of what love and romance truly are. I have tried to give you a story of two people who had to live through an Earthly hell in order to discover what love and romance are. There are many who do not have to go through such hellish ordeals to find true love, and there are those who go through as bad or worse and never discover true love. Regardless, I think you will find that everyone who ultimately finds their soul-mate does so through soul-searing process. So perhaps you'll forgive me for dismissing your examples out of hand. My wife kissed a lot more than 15 men, and I "kissed" a lot more than double that number of women. We've both had way more than average disaster dates, according to your stats. There have been multiple deaths due to our "dating lives," serious consequences that make us somewhat dismissive of your stats and examples. Between the two of us, we have suffered a lot of felony level child abuse and outright rape. How is it, then, that I can sit here and say that romance has saved us? Well, I can say that because it is the truth.
Look, the things that my wife and I suffered as children, then young adults, and then middle-aged adults, well, none of those things are unique. We dedicated our lives to insuring that our own children would not suffer these things, at least as long as we had any control over the situation, but we still had to endure these things ourselves. It's kind of like being in a war and, upon being the victor, dedicating your life to insuring that your children would not have to fight in a similar war. You know that humans and governments are pre-disposed to war and so there is only so much you can do, so you live your life and prepare your kids as best you can. Well, that's life, and to get through it you successfully you have to cling to certain values, you have to learn and cling to certain truths, and you have to appreciate certain beauties. Because, as I have said before: your love isn't a reflection on the world. There have been untold millions of people that stayed together for decades out of "love", only to fall apart later in life because any number of realizations about themselves or each other.

Let's go back to my original statement that started this conversation - the disturbing illusions of a false love. So, let's say you have a daughter. There's this boy at school who is fond of your daughter. So fond of her, in fact, that when they first met this boy felt like your daughter truly understood her, like he saw something in her eyes that profoundly moved him. Unfortunately for the boy, your daughter does not feel the same way. But the boy, he's watched all the Disney movies and has never had a crush so strong. So he befriends her, follows her around, watches her, thinks about her in bed. He asks her out once or twice, but she's just not into him. For him, this is true love, at first sight. He can't just give up on love cause he's never felt this deeply about someone before. He has to fight for her. She just doesn't realize that they were meant for each other.
So he chases after her constantly and suffocates her socially. Your daughter is getting really creeped out by this guy that she thought was her friend, but really he wants something more from her, something deeper. And he just won't let it go, cause he knows she feels the same way inside if she would just stop resisting him.
This scenario can go in any number of different directions. I've seen the exact same damn thing happen I don't know how many times, at different ages, with different outcomes, with roles reversed, and so on. My friends have been "that guy". My friends have been "that girl". I've known a couple people that committed suicide over unrequited love, an emotion so strong that they felt they could not live without the other.
But without blabbering on about negative examples... It's not that I don't believe in love. Love is normal and real in my mind. But when I look at the things I've witnessed, as in other people's life experiences, I find that the happiest, most loving people are those that were grounded and skipped the romantic bullshit, cause every person I've ever helped who suffered through some relationship horror went through the same demented psychological torment of people trapped in illusions of romance.
The best examples: coworkers that got to know each other for a couple years, decided to experiment with dating, and now are the happiest they've ever been in a long term relationship. People that met through dating services that waded through dozens of bad first dates until they found someone bearable that they decided to explore second, third, fourth, and so on dates ad infinitum until they were married with kids. Practical people that were abused by previous partners that they got involved with young when they felt "passionate connections" stronger than the bonds of family, ultimately escaping their living terrors of romantic mistakes and finding each other as friends that could bond over their wounds without having to be romantically involved until realizing ages later that they were perfect for each other. And the list goes on. The common factor of love in all these people is that they didn't realize their love until they patiently, cautiously grew that mutual passion for one another with time and care.
Everyone has different experiences and takes on things. I, for one, don't desire the emotional lifestyles of most the people I know, but I can readily empathize and put my mind in their shoes. And that same empathy is why I know I would get slapped if I tried to espouse the "merits of romance" to my most-afflicted acquaintances when they shudder at the thought of someone they fear saying those things about them. Hell no, they know better than I how disturbing that is.
So, if hellish lives are commonplace, and we overcame that hellishness, couldn't we be an example of how to overcome the evil that besets us?
No, you can't overcome hellishness by perseverance alone. You forget that you have no power over fate, like the children slaughtered in war-torn nations and the toddlers around the world that have been raped and murdered. I could wake up tomorrow and discover I have a terminal illness - the success stories do nothing for me, because many more that have hoped and prayed for salvation from imminent death have died than those in the minority that survived. Optimism and perseverance saved none of the lost, and the world moved on. Reality in my eyes: you make the best of what you have, don't deceive yourself, and strive to do well by others until you die, even though others may rarely do right by you. I'm happy to surrender optimism in order to help people practically, as I have always wished to do in my adult life, and I am aware of my great fortune having traveled the world firsthand and seen how the majority suffer more than the fortunate few.
In short, I disagree. We are free to disagree mutually with the understanding that different people have different experiences that color the tone of our perspective, with different problems that don't have the same solutions. No single living person is anywhere close to 100% right about everything, but we'll continue to believe in our own paths. Live long and prosper.

The font in this doesn't matter, because the type faces are completely different. Fonts are things like weight and italics or bold....it doesn't matter if the image used any of those styles since the typeface difference is what matters, not the font. So while you are not wrong in the "hurrr durrr technically correct so therefore never wrong" way, it is actually correct to use typeface.

Just watched an interesting TED Talk with John Maeda. His talk was about traditional leaders and creative leaders, it was a good listen. He used font as an example to show how we process content differently based on experience. He used the word "fear". Thought it was interesting.
I strongly believe that fonts (typefaces) cause more harm than good. I think the world would be a better place if we just had one font.
Sure, sometimes, one can use the font to better convey a subtle message. Normally, it doesn't matter; often you cut and paste and end up with a document that looks like shit because it has five different random fonts. Besides, 95% of all fonts look almost exactly the same!!
One of the previous times this was posted, someone edited the image to remove the splatter and put a heart there. The bottom was still much creepier.

How does me making a Game of Thrones reference turn into me being accused of a porn addiction? I watch a low-fantasy TV show grounded in reality that just so happens to not shy away from the human anatomy.
I don't watch it for the tits, believe it or not; hell, half the time I don't even notice because it's not the focus of the scene. I watch it because it's a complex story about rival families vying for power, beautiful cinematography and fight choreography, terrific special effects, and because it's not your typical fantasy story.
So, please, before you accuse me of being a porn addict again, how about you take your head out of your ass and realize that at least 75% of men and at least 40% of women watch more porn than I do, and that's including your consideration of TV shows with a bit of nudity as porn.
Also, I'd highly recommend the show, but I'd recommend not skipping the nude scenes because there are some really good character development scenes that include varying degrees of it.

Okay, what's wrong with "love at first sight"? It happened to me and a gal I met at a wedding, we were married exactly one year later, and that was 17 years ago.
While I'll admit that you have a point with the "playing hard to get" line, which would have made more sense several decades ago but nowadays is kinda weird, the "I'll never let you go" and "never give up on love" are perhaps a bit sappy, but unless they are used in a weird context I would not call them creepy.

The problem with love at first sight: when it's a completely unreciprocated feeling. "Wow, he/she's absolutely gorgeous, I must be in love." Yeah, we've all seen the movies and read the books and wish for some kind of romanticized fantasy life, but when you're the only one feeling it and you become obsessed with the idea because "I fell in love with her when I first laid eyes upon her!"
This person doesn't know you, and you don't know them. You don't know what relationships they have. You don't know what they're thinking or whether or not they find you attractive. So, are you "in love" because you made eye contact and smiled at each other?
Sure, it's happened for some people, just like all the typical romantic tropes. At some point in time it has absolutely worked out that way for someone. But looking at someone and just "knowing you have a connection" is an absolutely unhealthy expectation to have, one which is reflected in those afflicted with unhealthy psychological tendencies like stalkers.
As for never letting someone go or never giving up on love, it's creepy for the same reasons. "I'll never let you go" or "never give up on love" even though they broke up with you or never felt the same about you to begin with. Again, absolutely unhealthy expectations to have for another person if you barely even know each other, and a common theme in cases of stalking and abuse when love becomes a possessive expectation.
Love as it exists in the movies: two people interact for a couple of hours and fall desperately in love. Over the course of this process, one person proceeds to take drastic actions in pursuit of the other, including hyper-dramatic displays of obsession with this person they barely know and/or stalking them. Somehow, they end up living happily ever after. Yes, of course this isn't every love story ever told (going back to Shakespeare, who really got how tragically fucked up the idea of love can be when two star-crossed lovers gaze upon each other from across a room), but it's highly typical.
This is what kids have grown up watching for decades.
The reality of love, to me: you find someone attractive, but you aren't emotionally connected to them just by seeing them. You decide to approach this person and see how it goes - maybe they'll have a compatible personality and find you attractive as well, or maybe not. You get to know them. You explore each other's life and emotions. The more you learn about each other, the more you know just how compatible you two are together. At any point up until now, you might discover that your relationship just doesn't work and the feelings you had weren't quite up to snuff with reality. But, if things don't fall apart, you may then realize that you can both be vulnerable with each other because you trust and support one another as something more than friends. That's when you realize you're in love.

I'm not sure whether you are expecting too much of love or too little. Look, "knowing when you have a connection" is perfectly okay, why would you go on second or even first date with someone if you don't feel a connection? It just seems so cynical to me to see all these so-called tropes as creepy, and it seems so demanding to think that you have to go through this huge rigmarole to realize you're in love. I'm not saying that my wife and I were high school sweethearts who saw each other in the cafeteria and just knew we were soulmates, far from it. We grew up thousands of miles apart in the radically different worlds of the Pacific Northwest and the deepest of the Deep South. We did have in common horrible childhoods that we felt lucky to survive, and we both made some very poor (actually, disastrous) relationship choices thereafter. BUT, those choices were not from thinking that we had found "a connection," or that we were made for each other or that we were in love at first sight. With the worst ones for each of us, they were more the result of finding someone attractive and then going through the whole rigmarole you described, only to realize that we were dating/living with/married to completely psychotic jackholes. I mean, I could tell some stories that people on reddit would say "dude, no way, you're making that up." To say that we both had had a LOT of life experience before we found each other is the grandest of understatements. BUT, we were fortunate enough to have still retained the tiniest bit of innocence, the least little bit of belief in the idea (or ideal) of romance. Partly, I guess it's because we are both creative types, she's an artist when she's not nursing and I've dabbled in writing when I'm not making a living otherwise, so maybe we were predisposed to the idea of thinking with our heart. After a LOT of bad experience, we both grew wiser, and one day our we were introduced at our best friends' wedding, and baby, it was truly LOVE at first sight. Our experience had made us disappointed, and had even made us pretty much give up. In fact, we often talk about how perhaps we had to get to the point that we had given up before we could find each other. I'm not saying that love at first sight is something that you have to earn, at least not for everyone, but it was for my wife and me. But that's where the story begins, not ends, because just like an old love song, we had others trying to tear us apart. In fact, they fully succeeded in keeping us apart for several months. So here's my first bit of advice: do NOT listen to your friends or family, they may or may not have your best interests at heart, but they are not YOU and do not have to live with the consequences of their bad decisions about how you should live your life (yes, I am the overly protective father of one boy and three girls and I am still saying this; caveat - does not apply if you are a teenager and doubly does not apply if you are MY teenager).
My second bit of advice, which will probably make you stop reading, is to pray. No, I'm not saying this to get you to go to church or even to believe in God, but let me explain. Both my wife and I grew up in typically kinda religious American households, mine Baptist/whatever and her's Catholic/whatever. I stopped attending church in the military, she stopped about high school (not much diff). A couple of decades pass, a lot of really horrible relationships come and go, and we both simultaneously gave up on "dating," and started praying. Look, I don't care if you pray to Jesus or Allah or Buddha or the Moon or Charles Darwin (hey, I believe fully in evolution, I just threw that last one in for kicks and giggles), but believe me, it does help. Anyways, we both had suffered horrible childhood trauma and been in abusive relationships and had given up, but really, we had not quite given up. In actuality, we had just decided that we were no good in directing our own love life, so we were leaving it up to God/the universe/Darwin/etc. Lo and behold, it worked. I mean, it wasn't immediate, but it was sooooo close to immediate that it seem like it was. Thus my advice is this: give up and pray. So, what has happened in the past almost two decades since we met? Well, we've had four unbelievably amazing, talented, brilliantly smart, talented and absolutely beautiful children. My wife often remarks that our children are our contribution to the world, and if it were our only contribution it would be one helluva one. That extremely weighty contribution is not our only one, though, since we have enriched the lives of many other people since we became man and wife (not bragging, seriously, just trying to explain how our relationship has worked to the betterment of ourselves and humanity). Now, does that mean that we have lived "happily ever after"? Hell no! Good lord, we've fought all of the ordinary battles, such as the loss of others that we love, the scary-as-shit battle of having our first newborn in need of immediate heart surgery, the money battles, the loss of the primary wage earner's job battle (yep, that was me), the debt battle (yep, my fault again), and a plethora other battles that are a little too personal to post on reddit even though this is anonymous. But seriously, and I do mean this in a big way, part of the reason that we have been able to tackle all of those challenges head-on is because of the fact that we KNOW, all caps bold italics underlined and in bright red text, we know that we were meant for each other. That, my friend, is what love at first sight is all about. So yeah, even though we had multiple people who definitely knew better and who had our best interests at heart telling us to call it off (and to my eternal sorrow we actually listened to them for a time), we decided to "never give up on love." We each did let each other go, for a time, but whoever it is that runs this universe decided to forgive us and gave us a very fleeting opportunity to make another go at it (seriously, I'm amazed it worked, trust me, if our story were the plot of a movie you would roll your eyes and say "that would never happen"). But, one year from the weekend we met, we married. It's been 17 years, and this marriage will last the either 2 more seconds or fifty more years we both are alive. It will have produced so much joy and happiness that the world could scarcely be believed to contain it all. All because two people believed that romance was not dead, that love at first sight was real, and that they were literally made for each other.

Because you approached the person you thought was attractive, talked, then decided to try dating to explore the idea of having a connection with this person. This is how dating works for most people, that's why it's dating. Tons of folks don't stay together with the first person they ever asked out.
According to a study of 2,000 people: "The average woman will kiss 15 men, enjoy two long-term relationships and have her heartbroken twice before she meets 'The One', a study has revealed. Researchers found she will also suffer four disaster dates and be stood up once before she finds one she's happy to stick with. But she will also have been in love twice, lived with one ex-partner and had four one night stands. In comparison, men face being stood up twice and having six one night stands before they meet their ideal partner."
Another statistic: " If you get married or move in with someone at the age of 18 then thereโs a 60% chance youโll divorce or break up." - A case for a lot of the "first true loves".
Which is to say nothing of cheaters and people that have fallen out of love in their marriage and choose to stay together for the sake of their kids. Consider: why is it so often such a big surprise that the man or woman can't fathom how someone they loved so dearly could think so poorly of them in response?
People think they're in love, then they realize they aren't. This happens all the damn time. Your personal experience speaks nothing for the statistics and psychology of the real world. But if you want some nuggets of my own personal experiences to color the conversation... I've known at least a couple dozen people that either thought they were in deeply, terribly in love with someone that felt nothing similar in return, and people that were victims of those that felt "love" gave permission to be vile human beings.
Some of these entirely anecdotal examples from my personal experience:
"This is the perfect girl, my first love. We like all the same things, she came on to me first when I was too shy to approach, she changed my whole world! I'm so giddy!" This crashed and burned horribly when the girl got bored of him and he basically cut ties with everyone he knew for 6 months out of rage and sadness. We thought he was dead. The power of love.
A girl I knew, her first serious relationship. They were like the power couple or whatever - she thought the guy saw past the physical and into her soul/personality. The first guy that didn't just want her for her body. Well, turned out he was passing pictures he took of her around to his buddies.
One of my coworkers has a bit of an admirer - the brother of one of her oldest friends. The guy did all the typical romance stuff, sent her flowers, got her chocolates and toys, etc. for years. Even proposed to her twice. She just doesn't like him, period. She's told him repeatedly to stop over the years. Yet this is ongoing, even as she has had a steady boyfriend for the last couple of years. He's told her, time and time again, that he KNOWS they were absolutely meant for each other. I told her to get a restraining order.
The people in my own family, who have made death threats and shed each other's blood. Still together, in "love", still flip the switch to absolute rage at a moment's notice talking about how worthless each other really is in their eyes. THE most religious people I know.
Oh, people that have been raped by the ones that "loved" them, because they didn't love back and just "didn't get it".
So, yeah. Two people falling in love at first sight doesn't mean crap to me when it absolutely does not happen to the vast majority. I also know that people win the lottery, but it doesn't mean I'm gonna win the lottery too.
You are absolutely lucky to an astronomical degree when you stop and think for a moment about the millions of innocent children starving and dying painfully in underdeveloped worlds that will never have the chance to experience real love. Or the billions that live in societies where marriage is still a sacred and traded commodity controlled by their parents. Or the uncounted many lost in the horrors of the sex slave trade. As a religious person, I'm fortunate to live in a first-world nation, but I'll be damned if I surrender myself to romanticism in the face of the harsh realities of our world, from the practical to emotional.

Does it matter whether love at first sight or even falling in love happens to the majority of the population? Love is not a democracy. No, it does not matter if 1% or 99% fall in love at all or fall in love at first sight, the truth of love is very real, and the truth of love at first sight is equally real and equally important. Love at first sight saved my life, and I will not abandon it simply because there are others who have not experienced it. Love at first sight is important to protect as a concept because it is instrumental in understanding what love is, and that love exists at all. People confuse love and sex all of the time, that's not love's fault.
I truly appreciate the personal examples, but I don't want to play the "my love life is/was way more screwed up than that game," so let me play the "hypothetically speaking" game. Hypothetically, let's say that there's this guy who is very, very sweet, smart, considerate, good looking, tall dark and handsome. True, he's partly Cherokee, and grew up in the US where Indians=trash, but he hides it well. Imagine that boy lives an absolute hellish childhood where it would have been a blessing in many ways (to outsiders) if his mother had died in childbirth, except that he of course loves her all the more for her mental disease. Imagine a broken family with a redneck stepfather, a emotionally unavailable father who screwed every woman in sight (and who actually did abandon the boy and his sister for a time), one emotionally unavailable grandmother and a step-grandfather who raped the boy's mother. Yes, raped. We could add other things that would seem unbelievable and I could go on, but you get the picture. Oh, lest I forget, let's make this kid very intelligent and artistic, and let's throw in some old-style social ostracizing and bullying from 2nd grade until adulthood. This is one extremely screwed up kid, and I haven't even gone into detail.
So, this hypothetical person is really, truly screwed up is probably going to become either a priest/preacher (as his mother predicted he would, after going to several psychics) or he is probably going to go to prison. I mean, isn't that the template? But let's imagine that this one person decides that he will transcend all of this bullshit and become just a normal person, whatever that means. And let's imagine that he dedicates his life to this purpose, and decides that he must somehow have a higher purpose. Let's imagine that the boy decides, what the hell, let's live life to it's fullest, let's jump out of airplanes, let's read poetry, let's shoot down airplanes, let's rebuild a car engine. Let's romance girls, let's go to a museum. Let's read books, hell, let's write them.
That boy, in his 20's, finally hit reality. What is reality? Nothing more than the point of realization that his life sucked no more or less than several billion concurrent lives, and about 100 billion historical lives. He finally realized that there were people in Africa and Argentina and Zimbabwe and Washington DC who had lived lives only slightly better and/or an order of magnitude worse than he had lived up until that point, and they were still rocking and rolling. He sees a bumper sticker one day that becomes popular for a time, "Shit Happens," and he says to himself "yeah, that about sums it up." He has an amazing relationship with a musician that he cherishes, but that dies. He has an amazing relationship with a Cuban girl that he cherishes, but dies. On and on, there's the (probably, still not 100 percent sure) bisexual "yes I am a nymphomaniac" girl (seriously, I hate the term for a LOT of reasons, after all I am a father of three girls, just trying to give you an insight into this supposed person's past), the one night stand girl, the girl he cannot quite have, the intellectual/liberal girl, the Catholic big-boobed girl (as she described herself), the father-approved very hot mind-fuck single-mom girl, a bunch of in-between girls, a Montana girl teaching ESL in Japan girl (and really, if she's reading this, she was VERY close to becoming a wife and perhaps she could have not been been such a psycho that night at the Italian restaurant), and so on and so on and so on (should really mention the hot-bod PNW girl from a wealthy family all of whom loved the boy) forth. Hey, there are several girls left out of here, and we are not even into this hypothetical guy's thirties.
Later in life, this is all stuff that this guy would be utterly ashamed of, and would NEVER expect to see connected to him in any way. Reddit is anonymous, right? But let's say that this rather artistic guy for some strange/stupid reason (lack of proper guidance being paramount) decides to become a lawyer. And that he then decides to help people, only to find that there are a LOT of really screwed up people in this world, many of who deserve help but a few of whom are so incredibly evil that even meeting them nearly destroys your life. Yeah.
So, the guy flounders around but for some strange reason doesn't give up entirely. And then, for some strange reason, he meets a gal whose life has been even worse. Hell, it was dramatically worse. For some reason, the moment they meet there is a strange but undeniable attraction. It seems like the entire world is against them, but somehow they overcome it and decide for themselves, "hey, let's hang out together and see what happens."

Really, this couple could school you in an awful lot of life's miseries (I haven't even touched upon the much worse childhood and young adulthood of the girl, which was very abusive, degrading and unrelentingly destructive). BUT, somehow these two people held onto innocence, they believed in the power of "good," and the truly believed that there was such a thing as "true love" and romance. They listened to sappy 70s and 80's love songs and saw a bit of truth in them. From "What a fool believes" to "Wonderful tonight" and many songs in-between, they listened to the poetry of their age, which paled in comparison to the true poetry of earlier ages but which also had to suffice. They compared their own Cold War life experiences to their post-Berlin Wall experiences. They realized something that cannot be stated in a reddit post, or in a book as long as War and Peace. The finally came to a realization of what life really was -- not what it meant, because no one knows that. No, they merely realized what life had to offer them, and as meager an offering as it might be, they took it.
So here we are. You've given me specifics about abuse. Hell, I was dealing with much, much worse shit than that as a first year public defender, which was a cakewalk given my hellacious life -- whether through what I've experienced or through what my clients have experienced, I've seen some unbelievable shit. Regardless of religious beliefs, you must acknowledge that, as a species, we have a unique ability to visit evil upon each other. Yet, we also have a unique ability to see and render in words and pictures the most beautiful truths that have ever been realized. Is beauty greater than truth, or truth greater than beauty? Doesn't matter, if you even understood that sentence it means that you are not only human, but also elevated above those to which truth and beauty are concepts that simply do not matter at all. If truth and beauty matter to you, then love is not far behind. If love matters to you, then how can romance not be an equal value?
Your examples abound with animal desire, which is not love. Yes, there are many that surrender to it, and it is unfortunate for them and many others that they do not have an understanding of what love and romance truly are. I have tried to give you a story of two people who had to live through an Earthly hell in order to discover what love and romance are. There are many who do not have to go through such hellish ordeals to find true love, and there are those who go through as bad or worse and never discover true love. Regardless, I think you will find that everyone who ultimately finds their soul-mate does so through soul-searing process. So perhaps you'll forgive me for dismissing your examples out of hand. My wife kissed a lot more than 15 men, and I "kissed" a lot more than double that number of women. We've both had way more than average disaster dates, according to your stats. There have been multiple deaths due to our "dating lives," serious consequences that make us somewhat dismissive of your stats and examples. Between the two of us, we have suffered a lot of felony level child abuse and outright rape. How is it, then, that I can sit here and say that romance has saved us? Well, I can say that because it is the truth.
Look, the things that my wife and I suffered as children, then young adults, and then middle-aged adults, well, none of those things are unique. We dedicated our lives to insuring that our own children would not suffer these things, at least as long as we had any control over the situation, but we still had to endure these things ourselves. It's kind of like being in a war and, upon being the victor, dedicating your life to insuring that your children would not have to fight in a similar war. You know that humans and governments are pre-disposed to war and so there is only so much you can do, so you live your life and prepare your kids as best you can. Well, that's life, and to get through it you successfully you have to cling to certain values, you have to learn and cling to certain truths, and you have to appreciate certain beauties. It just so happens that there is one word that incorporates the idea of value, truth and beauty, and that is love. In order to find love, whether it is with another person or with the creator of the universe, you must engage in romance.
So I reject the cynicism that imbed your posts, and counter them with my own hard-won optimism. Man, how I wish that my story and that of my wife could be an extreme example, but in my experience it is anything but that. So, if hellish lives are commonplace, and we overcame that hellishness, couldn't we be an example of how to overcome the evil that besets us? And if we overcame this commonplace evil through a belief in the magic of romance and a dedication to the ideal of love, then why cannot others do the same?

Because, as I have said before: your love isn't a reflection on the world. There have been untold millions of people that stayed together for decades out of "love", only to fall apart later in life because any number of realizations about themselves or each other.
Let's go back to my original statement that started this conversation - the disturbing illusions of a false love. So, let's say you have a daughter. There's this boy at school who is fond of your daughter. So fond of her, in fact, that when they first met this boy felt like your daughter truly understood her, like he saw something in her eyes that profoundly moved him. Unfortunately for the boy, your daughter does not feel the same way. But the boy, he's watched all the Disney movies and has never had a crush so strong. So he befriends her, follows her around, watches her, thinks about her in bed. He asks her out once or twice, but she's just not into him. For him, this is true love, at first sight. He can't just give up on love cause he's never felt this deeply about someone before. He has to fight for her. She just doesn't realize that they were meant for each other.
So he chases after her constantly and suffocates her socially. Your daughter is getting really creeped out by this guy that she thought was her friend, but really he wants something more from her, something deeper. And he just won't let it go, cause he knows she feels the same way inside if she would just stop resisting him.
This scenario can go in any number of different directions. I've seen the exact same damn thing happen I don't know how many times, at different ages, with different outcomes, with roles reversed, and so on. My friends have been "that guy". My friends have been "that girl". I've known a couple people that committed suicide over unrequited love, an emotion so strong that they felt they could not live without the other.
But without blabbering on about negative examples... It's not that I don't believe in love. Love is normal and real in my mind. But when I look at the things I've witnessed, as in other people's life experiences, I find that the happiest, most loving people are those that were grounded and skipped the romantic bullshit, cause every person I've ever helped who suffered through some relationship horror went through the same demented psychological torment of people trapped in illusions of romance.
The best examples: coworkers that got to know each other for a couple years, decided to experiment with dating, and now are the happiest they've ever been in a long term relationship. People that met through dating services that waded through dozens of bad first dates until they found someone bearable that they decided to explore second, third, fourth, and so on dates ad infinitum until they were married with kids. Practical people that were abused by previous partners that they got involved with young when they felt "passionate connections" stronger than the bonds of family, ultimately escaping their living terrors of romantic mistakes and finding each other as friends that could bond over their wounds without having to be romantically involved until realizing ages later that they were perfect for each other. And the list goes on. The common factor of love in all these people is that they didn't realize their love until they patiently, cautiously grew that mutual passion for one another with time and care.
Everyone has different experiences and takes on things. I, for one, don't desire the emotional lifestyles of most the people I know, but I can readily empathize and put my mind in their shoes. And that same empathy is why I know I would get slapped if I tried to espouse the "merits of romance" to my most-afflicted acquaintances when they shudder at the thought of someone they fear saying those things about them. Hell no, they know better than I how disturbing that is.
No, you can't overcome hellishness by perseverance alone. You forget that you have no power over fate, like the children slaughtered in war-torn nations and the toddlers around the world that have been raped and murdered. I could wake up tomorrow and discover I have a terminal illness - the success stories do nothing for me, because many more that have hoped and prayed for salvation from imminent death have died than those in the minority that survived. Optimism and perseverance saved none of the lost, and the world moved on. Reality in my eyes: you make the best of what you have, don't deceive yourself, and strive to do well by others until you die, even though others may rarely do right by you. I'm happy to surrender optimism in order to help people practically, as I have always wished to do in my adult life, and I am aware of my great fortune having traveled the world firsthand and seen how the majority suffer more than the fortunate few.
In short, I disagree. We are free to disagree mutually with the understanding that different people have different experiences that color the tone of our perspective, with different problems that don't have the same solutions. No single living person is anywhere close to 100% right about everything, but we'll continue to believe in our own paths. Live long and prosper.

The font in this doesn't matter, because the type faces are completely different. Fonts are things like weight and italics or bold....it doesn't matter if the image used any of those styles since the typeface difference is what matters, not the font. So while you are not wrong in the "hurrr durrr technically correct so therefore never wrong" way, it is actually correct to use typeface.

Just watched an interesting TED Talk with John Maeda. His talk was about traditional leaders and creative leaders, it was a good listen. He used font as an example to show how we process content differently based on experience. He used the word "fear". Thought it was interesting.

I strongly believe that fonts (typefaces) cause more harm than good. I think the world would be a better place if we just had one font.
Sure, sometimes, one can use the font to better convey a subtle message. Normally, it doesn't matter; often you cut and paste and end up with a document that looks like shit because it has five different random fonts. Besides, 95% of all fonts look almost exactly the same!!
