The way it usually works is that a painting is public domain, but photos are owned by the photographer (usually the museum/archive). That's why a lot of textbooks and articles include "courtesy of..." next to a photo of a painting.

Like I get it to a degree. Someone had to go and take the picture for the publisher, but I'd be willing to bet that an almost exact copy of that picture exists on some government archive website.
Hell I'd be even willing to bet that that image is a roalty free image on Getty. I just find it absurd that Getty has to be credited in this case.
In United States, the photo won't pass the threshold of originality. Therefore the photographer won't be able to claim copyrights.

I think I may be mistaken, but I feel like I had learned at some point that in the case of a painting by a deceased artist, the current physical owner of that piece held reproduction rights. Like I said, though, I could be mistaken.
That shit only flies in Europe. It's true in the US but only to a limited degree while the copyright is still active.

Royalty free doesn't mean that you don't have to cite your source. I've not really used Getty, but I'm pretty certain their licensing rights for royalty free images includes a bit about still crediting them.
Even if this had been found in a government archive, it probably would have still come with a tag. It's considered academically dishonest to not cite images you've used, regardless of their source.

It looks like one of my eโs, but we have two clear examples of this little guy or girlโs eโs and it doesnโt look anything like them, while they both look similar to each other, so we know it was intended as an a.
There is a picture, and there's two words under it. It's not unreasonable to think that's the name. Blame the teacher for not correcting this or making it clear.
I don't think blame the teacher is right, blame the book. The teacher probably said George Washington was the first president and the kid forgot the name but studied it from the book. I bet the teacher thought nothing of the text under the photo since it said "images."
While this is funny, I'd like to point out that in the US we educate kids who in other countries would be thrown into the workforce at a young age. We also count those kids, which is why we look so bad on many international assessments.
That being said, there is much to be improved.

We also handcuff our teachers to common core, which essentially forces them to teach to the lowest common denominator, so anyone who might actually be intellectually gifted just gets bored in school. We'd be better off reverting to a trade school culture where people play to their strengths, and we just let teachers teach how they see fit (as long as it's not verbally or physically abusive).
All Common Core says is that teachers have to hit certain benchmarks by the end of the school year. This is so kids could transfer within the state or to a different state.
Common core has become a scapegoat, but these are only standards, not a method of teaching. Teachers are still free to teach in a way that fits with the state's standards as long as the information gets across, so it makes sense that Common Core does very little fix deeply ingrained problems and incentive structures within the education system.
Edit: I know it's not PC or sensitive of me, but I agree with you on that we do way too much to help students come up from an F to a D- and way too little to help students come up from an A to an A+. And it is disgraceful how we treat our geniuses (those with 160+ IQ points).

You get what you test for though. Only exceptionally skilled teachers deviate from teaching to the test in a way that would still impart those skills necessary to pass the test while actually broadening the kids' horizons.

I once put John Hanson down for that question just because and the teacher didn't know who John Hanson was. I'd still say George Washington is defined as the first president but John Hanson and Getty Images could put up for a good argument.
I'm glad someone else mentioned this as well. I will concede that George Washington was the first President of the United States but to say of America is arguably inaccurate. John Hanson would be the first president. I know people probably think I'm being facetious or argumentative, but I grow tired of people making fun of someone else for being "stupid" when they themselves cannot even ask the question accurately.
When I was in the 2nd grade I had a desk near a pair of teachers who had side by side classrooms. One day they were cracking up laughing and I carefully listened in... There was a spelling test the day before that they were each correcting and it seems one student decided to try and cheat for the word "crayon" as a package of crayons was sitting nearby. It seems the proper spelling for crayon is not in fact "C-R-A-Y-O-L-A".
My high school social teacher told us about how on a diploma essay a few years back their was a quote out of Mein Kampf, and all it said after was " - Mein Kampf". Apparently like half of the kids in our province began their essays with "The source is a quotation by Mr Kampf". These graduating students didn't know that it was a book and not a person. Lol
But undermining the people is the first step to defeating them.

Reminds me of the time I took an exam and a poet's name was misspelled(typo) in the question. Hundreds who took the test misspelled it in their responses also. Professor was rather disappointed and could actually pinpoint the moment he gave up on us to said exam.

But in American history, the first president is an important moment in history, much like Henry VIII is important in English history. I had one history teacher that had a bonus question on finals that required correct spelling and order of presidents.
Most "important". Basically George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D Roosevelt, John F Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and probably the last few.
So strange how rote memorization of a list of past leaders is somehow considered "education." We American's pretend to be so worried about a nuclear attack from North Korea or another 911 style terrorist attack, but nothing could possibly be worse than being the victim our own internal decay.

Something similar - as part of the transition from primary to secondary here (Scotland), we get pupils to research a famous Scottish mathematician. One of our pupils did John Napier and had to find out three things he invented.
The three things they found were:
1) A miracle five-minute belly fat-burning drug
2) A way to claim PPI from a mortgage taken out between 1970 and 2002
3) Logarithms (well, at least they were half-on-track with that one).
Pupil had looked at the clickbait ads on the first result they Googled.

How well do you think the average American student would do if they were quizzed on the location of English counties or Belgian Provinces?
I mostly spoke in terms of world geography. We had a final in HS that required us to fill out a world map. This included all 50 states. So if we (probably not todayโs kids) can name damn near all the countries AND our own states, that ainโt bad.
My point was that from my interaction and questions, it seemed that history, geography, and the like were all mainly focused on Europe and not the rest of the world. Again, small sample size for data. Just an observation. No need to get all flustered.
Iโm surprised they didnโt write โI'm surprised they didn't write "nazi, priviledge white trump supporter" or some stupid shit like that considering today's state of education.โ or something ignorant like that considering both the educators and the students and the people funding both of them are at fault for the USAโs lack of complex and comprehensive education for all who can attend public schooling.

The way it usually works is that a painting is public domain, but photos are owned by the photographer (usually the museum/archive). That's why a lot of textbooks and articles include "courtesy of..." next to a photo of a painting.

Like I get it to a degree. Someone had to go and take the picture for the publisher, but I'd be willing to bet that an almost exact copy of that picture exists on some government archive website.

Royalty free doesn't mean that you don't have to cite your source. I've not really used Getty, but I'm pretty certain their licensing rights for royalty free images includes a bit about still crediting them.
Even if this had been found in a government archive, it probably would have still come with a tag. It's considered academically dishonest to not cite images you've used, regardless of their source.

While this is funny, I'd like to point out that in the US we educate kids who in other countries would be thrown into the workforce at a young age. We also count those kids, which is why we look so bad on many international assessments.
That being said, there is much to be improved.

We also handcuff our teachers to common core, which essentially forces them to teach to the lowest common denominator, so anyone who might actually be intellectually gifted just gets bored in school. We'd be better off reverting to a trade school culture where people play to their strengths, and we just let teachers teach how they see fit (as long as it's not verbally or physically abusive).

All Common Core says is that teachers have to hit certain benchmarks by the end of the school year. This is so kids could transfer within the state or to a different state.
Common core has become a scapegoat, but these are only standards, not a method of teaching. Teachers are still free to teach in a way that fits with the state's standards as long as the information gets across, so it makes sense that Common Core does very little fix deeply ingrained problems and incentive structures within the education system.
Edit: I know it's not PC or sensitive of me, but I agree with you on that we do way too much to help students come up from an F to a D- and way too little to help students come up from an A to an A+. And it is disgraceful how we treat our geniuses (those with 160+ IQ points).

When I was in the 2nd grade I had a desk near a pair of teachers who had side by side classrooms. One day they were cracking up laughing and I carefully listened in... There was a spelling test the day before that they were each correcting and it seems one student decided to try and cheat for the word "crayon" as a package of crayons was sitting nearby. It seems the proper spelling for crayon is not in fact "C-R-A-Y-O-L-A".

Finland holds the top spot- they focus less on tests and more on actual learning, invest more into both teachers (I believe it's only the top 10% of graduates can teach) and students, and encourage all forms of education- including the arts instead of cutting their education budget.

When you say first king, do you mean the first king of the united kingdoms of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland? Or the first king of England? Or perhaps by Brits, you mean the first king of Britons?
You have to be more specific for a country that has a lot of history :P

But in American history, the first president is an important moment in history, much like Henry VIII is important in English history. As a recent graduate of said education system, unfortunately you're right.
They can't help the gifted kids, nor the not so gifted. And for the average students they just herd them through like sheep to get a useless diploma.

Went to the UK and spoke with some folks...I am pretty sure we are doing just fine, weโll at least when compared to what I was taught in school. Had a guy who was very adamant that Washington State was in the middle of the US. Small sample size though.

Probably not too well.
I mostly spoke in terms of world geography. We had a final in HS that required us to fill out a world map. This included all 50 states. So if we (probably not todayโs kids) can name damn near all the countries AND our own states, that ainโt bad.
My point was that from my interaction and questions, it seemed that history, geography, and the like were all mainly focused on Europe and not the rest of the world. Again, small sample size for data. Just an observation. No need to get all flustered.

Power doesn't equal strength or happiness. The 1st world countries with the least amount of religious people and smallest militaries for example, are consistently ranked as having the best quality of life and happiest populations.
