I think literal would be:
"can you spell your name?"
"yes"

Reminds me of a joke I've read recently somewhere.

-- What are your weak points?

-- I tend to pay attention to semantics of a question but miss pragmatics.

-- Could you give an example?

-- Yes.

Police Squad did this so well you could easily miss these not-in-your-face jokes. It had plenty of in your face ones too though, my favorites were the "freeze frame" endings of pretty much every episode.

Why would "yes" not be a literal answer? The question is "do you have the ability to spell your name?" So, "yes" is a perfectly literal answer, it seems.

Ghostman_Loon · 1 points · Posted at 09:18:15 on January 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

CAN (do you believe that you have the ability to do something).

Therefore, "do you believe that you have the ability to write your own name?"

likesleague · 1 points · Posted at 10:28:33 on January 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

Whether or not you can do something and whether or not you believe you can do something are different though, unless you have some source stating that can refers to belief in one's ability to do something.

Also, "yes" still seems like it would be a valid, literal answer regardless. "Do you hold this belief?" "Yes."

Ghostman_Loon · 1 points · Posted at 10:40:14 on January 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

the main problem is that the English are one of the worst English speakers in the world, because they do not need to learn it because they are English. One of the main reasons why the English belittle foreigners is because they cannot understand them... and that is because they are speaking correct English.

Had a German girl work with us a few years ago. Had a couple of idiots who would correct everything she said, but incorrectly, as her English was perfect.

What they should say is, "Please spell your first and last name for me."

hpdefaults · -10 points · Posted at 20:26:00 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

Oh, please - if what he said is 'lazy' then every person who's ever used a pronoun is 'lazy.' Using shortened references to things previously said is a perfectly normal part of language.

Renovarian00 · 5 points · Posted at 20:35:53 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

Can you spell first and last?

Uh, I might not be an English major but there's only one pronoun in that sentence and it's the subject. It's not missing anything.

Subject: you. Verb: spell (or can spell, idk). Spell what (direct object maybe?): first and last.

hpdefaults · -4 points · Posted at 20:46:58 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

Yeah, and you don't need to be an English major to know that pronouns are only one example of words referring back to other things. Granted, he's speaking casually/informally but you'd have to either be a)nervous/not really paying attention like she was, b) an utter moron, or c) think the person was trying to pedantically "trick" you to not think he was referring back to the "first and last name" question he just asked her half a second ago.

saf3tyhazard · 7 points · Posted at 21:18:22 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

No, that's fucking retarded and so are you. If someone asks you can you spell FIRST and LAST just fucking like that you'll spell exactly that. Even if they just asked you for your name. So a)you're fucking retarded b)you're playing devils advocate c)you're fucking retarded.

hpdefaults · 1 points · Posted at 21:20:48 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

tbonecoco · 1 points · Posted at 01:07:34 on January 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

I see what you mean. But when we talk, isn't the idea that we communicate the best we can so people understand?

If you were in a room full of men, and someone asked you who brought the wine, would you just say "him"? No, you would either be specific or gesture. It's effective communication.

hpdefaults · 1 points · Posted at 01:20:13 on January 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

I think that when you say "first and last name, please" and then immediately follow that up with "can you spell first and last," that's a pretty specific reference to the previous sentence, given that the term "first and last" is right there in both sentences.

Context maybe would apply if he said "spell first name and last name and she said 'F I R S T N A M E L A S T N A M E'

But the video is perfect literalism.

[deleted] · 2 points · Posted at 19:42:45 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

What? No the context of the conversation is still on the subject of her name.

hpdefaults · 0 points · Posted at 19:32:06 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

Nope. Context still suggests that first and last referred to something other than the literal words 'first' and 'last.'

BuzzUrGirlfriendWOOF · -5 points · Posted at 19:52:02 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

I don't think these people understand what context means. Clearly you do though! Have they never heard someone use the term "context clues"? In this situation, based on context clues, it is very obvious he's asking her to spell her first and last name.

[deleted] · 11 points · Posted at 20:01:24 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

Not when you say "can you spell first and last" it's so badly worded, and from a reporter no less. You'd think he'd have a good grasp on the English language.

It actually seems like one of those jokes where if she had spelt her name (and why would the reporter even ask that, her name is not difficult) he would turn around and say "GOTCHA, I ACTUALLY MEANT THE WORD 'FIRST' AND 'LAST' 😂😂😂"

This is the reporter's fault.

He has a perfectly clear grasp of the language. English speakers use shortened phrases to refer back to things previously mentioned all the time. What kind of grasp do you have if you aren't aware of that?

You've seriously never seen Erica/Erika/Ericka or O'Donell/O'Donnell?

he would turn around and say "GOTCHA, I ACTUALLY MEANT THE WORD 'FIRST' AND 'LAST' 😂😂😂"

Yeah, and if he did that he'd be a cheeky unfunny idiot. There's nothing clever about getting someone to believe you intended one meaning of a sentence by heavily suggesting it in context and then revealing that you "tricked" them.

[deleted] · 0 points · Posted at 21:03:18 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

Ah yes, that well known phrase, "first and last".

You've got me on the name thing, I suppose it is proper reporting to at least get the right spelling. It's not a silly question.

Not sure what you're getting at on your last point. I agree it's not funny, doesn't mean it wouldn't happen.

hpdefaults · 0 points · Posted at 21:19:30 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

Ah yes, that well known phrase, "first and last".

Don't be a dolt - 'first' referred to 'first name' and 'last' referred to 'last name,' you understood that perfectly well when he asked the question as did every other person trying to argue that he was 'unclear.'

Not sure what you're getting at on your last point. I agree it's not funny, doesn't mean it wouldn't happen.

What was your point in bringing it up to begin with? It sounded like you were saying someone might misinterpret the sentence as an attempt to trick them. I'm saying that's such an absurdly dumb possibility that no one would really be looking for it normally, and to avoid giving that impression is certainly no reason for him to have specifically said 'first name and last name' again.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 21:29:25 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

I brought it up just as a comment. I'm not sure why you're getting so hung up on this whole thing.

I'm saying he should have just said "can you spell your first and last name" or "can you spell that" and she would have understood. Context or not, "can you spell first and last" is not common.

Is asking people to spell random words out of nowhere common?

I already explained it. It could have been a bad unfunny joke. There are lots of videos like that. We're just going round it circles now.

hpdefaults · 1 points · Posted at 22:13:53 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

Well, then, let me just double-check to make sure I understand it this time: you're saying if a person uses a slightly less than common phrasing that nevertheless makes perfect sense in context, it's their own fault if they're misunderstood, because the person they're talking to might think they're trying to trick them and post a video to the internet. Is that about right?

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 22:24:30 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

No, you just said all that.

The reporter could have said "can you spell that?" and even with your precious 'context' it would have made sense. Yep, we're definitely going around in circles. Are you okay mate?

hpdefaults · 1 points · Posted at 22:29:30 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

I'm perfectly fine, and I was just paraphrasing what you've said, even if you don't want to acknowledge it. And why is "can you spell that?" somehow immune from your "it could have been an unfunny joke" clause?

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 00:03:21 on January 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

Because "can you spell that" or "can you spell that for me please" are normal questions.

Okay, first thing: it's no one's fault because what happens in the video is totally innocuous. There's no use to assign blame to one party or the other.

Second, it's perfectly obvious what the reporter is getting after. It's not a perfectly worded question, but it's not unclear whatsoever. The lady is just camera shy and so we get to see a humorous gaff.

Chris20nyy · 2 points · Posted at 21:34:50 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

The context of the conversion want about her first and last name. They were interviewing her about something else. Her name was merely asked as a detail for a completely different topic.

Unless the interview was about first and last names. I love reddit!

Things that are only correct in context are not correct in general. Literally by definition.

hpdefaults · 1 points · Posted at 00:13:14 on January 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

The question wasn't asked in general, it was asked in context.

Blackdragonproject · 2 points · Posted at 00:19:48 on January 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

Ok, but the question was, "can you spell first and last?" for which her answer was generally correct and in context the question is ambiguous and phrased incorrectly if they meant first and last name. At best, answering by spelling her names only has a chance of being correct due to context. Her actual answer was correct in general.

hpdefaults · 1 points · Posted at 00:23:09 on January 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

It's really not ambiguous in context, any more than his saying "can you spell it for me?" would be. (In fact, it's slightly better than that, because he specifies he wants both names and not just one.) The phrasing is fine. Everyone who watched this knew exactly what he was talking about, that's part of what made it funny.

Right, so just because something is popular opinion, an appeal to popular opinion results in the original claim being false. Nice logic. Better study up a little harder on those fallacies if you are gonna use them.

I didn't say any of that, nice strawman. I was simply pointing out that your out-of-the-blue statement that lots of people disagree with me is irrelevant.

No, popularity does not make what I say correct. However, it sure as fuck makes it more likely.

Mmm, no, not really, but I digress.

If you are gonna go against popular opinion, you better have a pretty sound argument as to why what you say is true.

I think I've provided one, and the fact that you've stopped trying to directly counter it and are instead trying to appeal to strawmen and irrelevant things tells me you don't really have any legitimate objections to it left.

So far your argument has started and ended with, "I think it's fine because I understood it, and in general, context trumps bad english and lack of clairity."

Also not my argument. I'm saying it has total clarity in context, to the point that if someone didn't understand what he meant, it was very, very likely due to something on their end (not paying attention, nerves, etc.) I also suspect just about everyone understood what he was asking her, not just myself. Are you saying you didn't?

Okay, first, relax a bit. Step away from the keyboard and take some time to breathe. No idea what's going on in your life, but we're talking about a two-sentence conversation some strangers on the internet had, this is nothing to get this upset about.

Secondly, your contest/judge metaphor still applies equally to the 'can you spell it?' example. As does your whole argument. You've already agreed that context can change the meaning of a question and make the 'technically correct' interpretation irrelevant if the question 'correctly references the previous question,' as you put it. So that's the real core of our disagreement, whether his question 'correctly references the previous question' or not.

I proposed to you that his use of the phrase 'first and last' in both sentences is a perfectly clear, valid way to do that. You still haven't said why you think it isn't. I'll invite you to think on that point and consider the possibility that maybe you're getting angry because deep down you know I have a point here. Or you can respond with more empty insults if you prefer, whatever makes you feel better.

am·big·u·ous amˈbiɡyo͞oəs/ adjective (of language) open to more than one interpretation; having a double meaning. "the question is rather ambiguous" unclear or inexact because a choice between alternatives has not been made.

hpdefaults · 1 points · Posted at 02:55:23 on January 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

Yeah, perfectly aware of the definition. Doesn't invalidate my point or bolster the one you were trying to make. The context reduces the ambiguity to a point where only one interpretation really makes sense.

In this case she is still correct because she gave one of the two acceptable answers given the situation and the ambiguous question.

This is where we disagree. The mere presence of ambiguity in the question may make them both technically possible, but it doesn't make both answers acceptable, because there is a staggering difference in their rational viability when you consider the full context (and maybe this is where our misunderstanding is, the context I'm referring to isn't just limited to the preceding sentence). Once you consider things like understanding basic human nature and how people act when they first meet one another and so on and so forth, you know that it's highly unlikely that someone would ask someone to spell 'first and last' immediately after asking their 'first and last name' unless they were intending to specifically refer to the names. My assertion is that the full context basically shifts the question's possible meaning from "100% asking to spell the words" to "99.99% asking to spell the names and 0.01% asking to spell the words." Yes, technically that "introduces ambiguity," but come the fuck on. Her answer might be correct, but the probability of that is so minuscule that we can effectively, for all practical purposes, consider it incorrect.

So, no, I reject your assertion in 5), because she isn't correct in all situations. She's merely given an answer that's potentially correct in all situations, which is not the same thing. And in the situation we're actually discussing, she is incorrect beyond a reasonable doubt.

I'm not assuming you were arguing because of emotional problems. Im assuming you took the argument to a place of such intense anger and completely unnecessary personal attacks for that reason. There's simply no good reason to get that angry about something like this.

I don't get how you can think a situation involving ambiguity isn't probabilistic. Saying both answers are 100% equally correct because there's ambiguity is the truly incoherent statement here. But even if I accepted your argument completely, you've still never really addressed why you think she'd be correct to spell "first and last" but wouldn't be correct to spell "it" in the other example in any satisfactory manner. Regardless, the discussion's gotten old, so I'll stop bothering you and go back to my helpless little logic-devoid world where I administer complex IT systems for a living as I've done successfully and lucratively for the past 15 years.

I was involved in a lawsuit at one point and the lawyer was going over things with me and he asked me a similar question: "Do you have a watch?" and I just showed him and said: "Yes".

He responded with "Good. That's how you should answer any questions they ask you. Only give exactly what they ask for. Most people will give the time, but I asked if you had a watch. Never volunteer information."

So, yeah, I can how you'd answer like that if you've already conditioned yourself to do so.

thebuggalo · 150 points · Posted at 19:45:48 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

I think a better example would be to ask "Do you know what time it is?" and then if they respond with "2:44pm" you tell them to only answer with "yes". You DO know what time it is. If they want to know what time it is, they have to ask the question in a way for you to tell them.

In your example, I think you DID volunteer information. You showed the watch. It would be perfectly acceptable for you to say "Yes" and never show them the watch. They would have to ask to see the watch.

Ok, but it wasn't my example. Take it up with the lawyer whose name I can't even remember at this point. The interaction was notable, not the guy.

And yes, technically, some information was given up but it's not like I was making effort to conceal the watch at the time (and this is mostly information I didn't say above as I didn't really see it as pertinent to the anecdote). I was wearing something short sleeved and had my arms on the table. I was partially confused as why he was asking since he would also be able to clearly see the watch on my wrist. I was mostly displaying it in a "dude, it's right here" kind of fashion.

3two3one · 1 points · Posted at 06:01:33 on January 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

In your example, I think you DID volunteer information. You showed the watch. It would be perfectly acceptable for you to say "Yes" and never show them the watch. They would have to ask to see the watch.

Your argument is kind of implying that they could have said "No". There was really only one answer to the question and I don't really understand the point you're making.

thebuggalo · 6 points · Posted at 20:36:31 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

My point is that he visually revealed that he was wearing a watch and showed it to them. All he had to do was answer "Yes" to say he does have a watch. Now the person asking the questions knows that not only does he have a watch, but he is also currently wearing it right now and knows which wrist it is on, what color it is, etc.

The person asking the questions didn't ask for that information. They just asked "Do you have a watch". The bare minimum that he would need to respond with to answer truthfully is "Yes". To get more information out of him, the person asking questions would need to be able to think of those questions to get the answers they want.

In your example, I think you DID volunteer information. You showed the watch. It would be perfectly acceptable for you to say "Yes" and never show them the watch. They would have to ask to see the watch.

thebuggalo is not implying he could have said no. thebuggalo explicitly says that OP only had to say yes, which was the truthful answer. OP didn't need to show proof of said answer (by physically showing the watch).

I'll restate it differently for you:

Lawyer asks if he has a watch.

There is two answers to that:

  1. Yes, I do have a watch,
  2. No, I don't have a watch.

OP had a watch, so his truthful answer would've been : Yes, I do have a watch

Yet, OP raised his arm and showed his watch while answering. He added physical proof that he did have a watch. That physical proof was not required, he was not specifically asked to show it; he was not asked to prove he had it. He therefore volonteered an extra information. He volonteered the information that he did have the watch by physically demonstrating it.

Volonteering extra information that was not asked for, that's what the lawyer was warning OP about. The lawyer was warning him to not volonteer information, yet he did by showing him the watch. Showing the watch was not asked for.

Here, read the quote again:

In your example, I think you DID volunteer information. You showed the watch. It would be perfectly acceptable for you to say "Yes" and never show them the watch. They would have to ask to see the watch.

Sorry but context is important here and it's a completely different situation. If before he asked if you had a watch he was saying "man I really need to know what the time is." then he asked if you had a watch you might say "yes, the time is 11." The entire subject in the OP was her name and while the reporter would have been better off asking to spell her name directly it's not unreasonable to expect people to follow context in conversation.

If there is no context involving what the time is I doubt anyone is going to just straight up give the time if asked if they have a watch. They'll say yes or no and then maybe ask if they need the time, but if time is already brought up they might give the time since they have the expectation now that they're being asked about a watch specifically because the person needs the time.

Agapanthus plants (yes, these are from South Africa but ridiculously common in Australia). Kokoda mentioned on the lady's shirt. European looking people, left hand drive traffic and Australian-style road markings. And the light - Australian light is somehow 'different' (it's really noticeable after being away for a while in the northern hemisphere then coming back). All that kind of stuff you might not notice individually but subconsciously adds up to looking like 'a place'.

As for the people, I think people from a certain place often have a particular 'look'. My American wife says the same thing - Australians look a certain way that is different from Americans but you can't quite put your finger on why. And I notice the same thing in reverse, there's a certain 'look' a lot of Americans have (where I live in the midwest at least) that you don't see in Australia much. Probably something to do with a more Germanic vs. more British gene pool, plus mannerisms and body language.

Me:....Oh ...of course you can spell your name. Would you please spell it for me so I can put it correctly on the card. (We both laughed at my idiocy)

Oznog99 · 3 points · Posted at 20:54:49 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

MisuVir · 8 points · Posted at 21:06:06 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

It is an incomplete sentence. First and last are intended to be adjectives but there is no subject. First and last what? Lacking a subject, the only clue you have is the context of the sentence.

I've never heard someone say a sentence like that. I imagine the reporter speaking like Grover.

EDIT: I get it, it is a bad joke. I didn't write it. XKCD did and they wrote it to be a bad joke. I was just explaining it. Also, the fact that there is no punctuation in the original sentence ruins the joke, but imagine hearing it, not reading it.

Just assume the punctuation is black-hat's interpretation. This kind of stupid excuse for humor generally relies on ambiguities that disappear with punctuation so that's just a limitation of the written format.

error_try_again · 2 points · Posted at 18:36:20 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

There's no punctuation in speech in general, you should get used to this by now. The reason it wasn't used in the speech balloon was in order to not give away the (admittedly very bad) joke beforehand.

Lippuringo · 5 points · Posted at 18:51:53 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

Except, you know, there is punctuation, otherwise we would speak monotonically and there would be no pauses between sentences.

[deleted] · 0 points · Posted at 19:47:39 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

What? Of course there is punctuation in speech. You can visually see punctuation in writing, but you don't read it out when you're reading just like you wouldn't say period when you end a sentence. That doesn't mean your speech isn't organized with punctuation.

error_try_again · 0 points · Posted at 20:09:11 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

There are pauses etc in speech, but punctuation is merely the textual representation of those pauses. Punctuation is visual, speech is not.

eisbaerBorealis · 1 points · Posted at 19:28:59 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

"There are three words in 'the English language'". Stop. There are three words in that phrase. That is going to be what the person is asking about later when he says "what's the third word?"

Also, keep in mind that that guy got his hand cut off because the joke was so bad... so stop trying so hard to figure it out. If it was a good joke, he probably wouldn't be screaming right now.

The person on the other end of the line continued to insist that her Windows was broken, so she hung up on him thinking that it was a scam call about selling her new windows. It wasn't until she told the story to me that she realized they were talking about computers.

I would probably say that too. I mean why would someone ask you how to spell your name in an interview?

ithinktoo · 3 points · Posted at 01:27:35 on January 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

All reporters do this. Always. Its so the graphic can be made spelling their name correctly later and displayed under their sound bite. If you just say spell your name they will often only spell the last name and people always have weird ways of spelling first names different even though they are pronounced the same.

papaduo · 2 points · Posted at 03:47:43 on January 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

Naa I know this dude, went to school with him they are being genuine. Most field reporters ask spelling of the name so that when they put the text in the bottom of the screen on air it is correct. You never know with some people. This would have been a pre-interview.

1) You can look at it in a noisy public place.
2) You can look at it while listening to something else.
3) You can look at it without other people hearing what you are doing.
4) Doesn't try to open in the youtube app on mobile.

hey, i genuinely thought she was smart. she was smart enough to find the literal answer to his question. kudos to her.

Sadly, in todays day and age, most women turn their brains off after HS and rely on getting a bf or husband who can handle things. I hate that idea. It sickens me that most early 20s woman cant even do something basic like double digit multiplication. I swear they just rely on their looks to get by in the world. Most of them just know about things they run into on a daily basis, nothing more. Cant tell you basic accounting, spelling, history, geography, physics. I wish this wasn't the case, id love if the world was full of intelligent women.

[deleted] · 2 points · Posted at 21:31:41 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

Ok. You picked a video that specifically cherry picks stupid answers. That's confirmation bias at its finest.

hoonigan_4wd · 0 points · Posted at 22:25:26 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

Asking questions like, "what was the civil war fought over?" to a black person is cherry picking. The only question like that in the whole thing was the donut question. All the others were extremely valid

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 22:48:37 on January 12, 2017 · (Permalink)

For someone who is criticizing people for turning off their brains, you have completely missed my point. The video is specifically edited to pick the dumbest answers. You don't see any or how many people answer the question in a smart way because that isn't what the video is about.
