Who are you to tell my son he has to draw straight lines?? He is going to be drawing pandimensional homodiagonal cross-spatial line-like representations.
in my experience people who bring this up are often pedantic for pedantry's sake, and use the word "line" to mean a line, curve, queue, etc. in their own everyday speech.

pardon my pedantry, but by definition lines are straight. those things that aren't are curves.

Only on a flat plane. Lines on curved surfaces are curved. Euclid has limited us all!
From everyones perspective they are evil. Or at least dicks.
Anakin kills tusken raiders who kidnapped his mom in anger: that's wrong.
Han solo gets annoyed and shoots anyone he wants: that's fine.
klarno ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:54:29 on October 17, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Just different expectations. Han Solo was a scoundrel living a life of crime and who already hit rock bottom, but Anakin was Space Jesus and he was supposed be better than that.
That depends. Let's find out with some additional questions:
1. Are you a line?
2. Are you on a curved surface?
3. Does the thought of another thick, hard line really get you going?
Kind of? You might see it curving away from you, like a road going over the horizon. But if it's a geodesic (the shortest path between two points in a space), you could follow it without turning around at all, as though it were straight.
So if you could get information about the curve ahead of you, you could tell, but if you closed your eyes you'd have no idea.
If you go by the geodesic of a line segment on a curve. Then yes, it will still be a straight line.
tyy365 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:26:03 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Depends in the curvature. Lines of longitude/latitude on Earth look pretty straight from our perspective but curved from space. If something is curved like a cylinder, vertical lines will always be straight.
XkF21WNJ ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 18:22:37 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
Lines of longitude latitude aren't even straight from the perspective of the earth. An extreme example would be the 1m wide circle around the north pole.

Basically, each of these lines exists on a separate curved surface which is perpendicular to the paper along the lines.
Additionally, the curved surfaces have no volume along the plane of the paper, such that the lines wrap around the top and bottom infinitely but appear to be line segments by retracing the same path back and forth.
Within a singularity anything could be a straight line.

That's only true in geometry. Technical definitions are not the objectively correct ones. Astronomers consider any element heavier than helium a metal; chemists don't. Biologists consider birds to be dinosaurs, but that's not what anyone else means when they use the word.

In Euclidean geometry, all lines are straight, and continue to infinity. What the teacher was looking for was line segments. Draw a line segment. All line segments in Euclidean geometry are also straight.

Technically, a line must be straight to be considered a "line". (At least in mathematical terms) While we're at it they have to be never-ending as well

I did something like that with an assignment. In Jr. high I had to do a worksheet that asked for various aspects of several elements. Questions like who discovered it, when ect. My lab partner and I did one perfectly then for the second we did Einsteinium and said it was discovered by Einstein and a couple other random answers, then we did Californium and said it was discoverer by Tupac for the boys in the hood, then for the last it was all scribbles. We both got a 100% on it, and we were some of the only people to actually get A's because most people didn't finish the assignment.
It is easier to get away with that stuff when you actually know your stuff and get A's when you do your work properly.
See, this is why our education system is fucked. It teaches kids to follow rules, not to be ingenuitive. It punishes kids for being creative and thinking outside the box. It does not reward kids who step up to the plate and question the rules and why things have to be the way they are.
Interestingly, the education system is also dominated by government-mandated curriculum. Makes you wonder.

Probably not in school where your answers need to be exact, but yeah, it does work in practice. Your brain doesn't analyze every letter in a word. It's looking for patterns. Changing one letter in a word will in most cases not affect the brain's ability to recognize the word at a glance.
If through some disability you do have to read letter by letter to identify a word, then it wouldn't necessarily work, but for the majority of the population, yeah that works.
It aslo works when you mvoe letters aruond witihn words.
If you're considered one of the smart kids, then yes it does work. Anecdotal, I know, but I was Top 5 in my class from elementary through high school and had legitimately terrible handwriting. I definitely got the benefit of the doubt a decent number of times over the years.
As a teacher, yes... that's extraordinarily creative. That student may have failed the test, but they're going to be President. Students started doing this on tests. A teacher decided to automatically marked them all wrong. One of the kid's complained to the principal. He was given an in-school suspension for cheating. His mom raised hell with the school board. His suspension was overturned and he got full points on the test. We went to a very white, rich school system and bad behavior never occurred, so this was big news. Well the next week he did it again and was suspended again. Mom went to the board and allegedly, they said "it was funny the first time, but dumb the second." His suspension was upheld and that was the last time it happened.

31th of December 2016, the day 2016 will finally get a taste of its own medicine and finally FUCKING DIE.
From a mathematical point of view, the most natural/common way that we might divide the real line into equal intervals is with half open intervals with the closed side on the left, giving you intervals such as [1, 2), [2, 3), and so on. What would it mean to ask what the 'end' of such an interval is? Well, I would argue that this should be interpreted as the supremum, or least upper bound of the interval. So the 'end' of the interval [1, 2) would be 2.
Applying this to years, "1895" most likely/naturally refers to the interval of time [1895, 1896), and "1896" refers to the interval [1896, 1897). The "end" of 1895 would refer to the point 1896, which falls into the interval named 1896. So it would be perfectly reasonable to say that 1895 ended in 1896.
No. The year of 1895 is then [1895,1896). 1895 is greater than or equal to 1895 and strictly less than 1896. This is absolutely true. Measuring the year of 1895 in decimal form is 1895.0000000 (Jan 1 midnight), 1895.62784 (something), 1895.999999999 (Dec 31 the instant before midnight). Hitting midnight is 1896. I can't believe I'm typing this. I can't believe this has gained so much traction. What an argument.
By the time 1896 started, 1895 had already ended. In order for 1895 to end in 1896 it would have to have some overlap. A place where it is both 1895 & 1896 at the same time temporarily.
Saying 1895 ended in 1896 makes about as much sense as saying 1894 ended in 1896. Neither did, they both ended BEFORE 1896, not during.
Technically it's based on the time of place. Say it with me, "time of place". Just because it's midnight in Dubai doesn't also make it midnight in Colorado. It was never 1895 & 1896 at the same place & at the same time.
12:00:00 1896 is the start of 1896, not the end of 1895.
Why are they mutually exclusive?
T00FEW ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:19:40 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
They aren't. The argument is absurd.
oifsda ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:15:44 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Exactly! It hasn't ended if it's ongoing. It's only ended once it no longer is. So at 11 59 99 it's still 1895, so it can't have ended (past tense) until 1896 has begun.
Then how does that logic not carry over to dates? The last instance (or heartbeat, if you will) of 1895 happens at 12-31-95 at 11:59:59. Therefore, 1895 ends, or dies, in 1895.
I think that I see what you are saying... 1895 can't end until 1896, because until 1/1/16 0:00:00, it is still 1895.
You're not denying that 12/31/95 23:59:59 is the last instance of 1895, only that it can't end until the year actually changes.
Using my example of death, your date of death cannot be determined until there is a change in your life status. Death (1896) ends life (1895), not your last heartbeat (12/31/95@23:59:59).
I might not get your joke here, but for 1895 to end in 1896, 1895 would have needed to take place within 1896 which isn't possible since 1806 only starts once has 1895 ended.
This is actually a perfectly acceptable answer. For math at that age, you just want to understand a child's thinking. So this child counted on their fingers (counting up strategy) and could also count up in their head. They could also mean that this is a fact the child just knows, which is great and is also something we aim for at that age.
In my experience, teachers hated when you just know something. Like if I'm getting lucky on 3 or 4 answers out of 10, sure I'll explain how I got there. If I'm acing all of this easy unit, come on.
Being that this is such an early age, probably first grade by the looks of it, these kids will be focused on memorizing simple addition facts like that so they can build up to more complicated facts. If a kid told me that, I would be pleased that the child had memorized that fact, because it would mean they were ready for more difficult facts. Every teacher is different of course, as is every grade, but this would be my personal reaction.
While it is a perfectly acceptable answer to me as well, different teachers might be looking for different answers. Where I live we (disgustingly) teach to the test. This child would likely have both answers marked incorrect because the teacher would want to see a strategy physically modeled. This is a 1st/early 2nd level sheet, and we would be looking for the child to model base 10 blocks, draw a number line, etc. You can't understand their thinking very well if they are just telling you they did it in their head or counted on their fingers-- the child might not know how to represent the number 4 and could actually be counting 6 instead.
Here these would be acceptable answers at a kinder level in more of a whole-group conversation setting when just beginning to discuss how to solve math problems.
Well, that's what you teach in the hopes that they'll use strategies such as that. First graders aren't at the point where they need to worry about standardized tests. Most of the math they're learning is completely new, and the idea is that they'll make use of and be able to explain these strategies by second grade. Honestly I'd need a whole lot more information to judge this situation. This is only one teacher's opinion.

It was second grade for me. I never got it, they finally gave up. I scored 760 on the math in the SAT so I guess it was kinda bullshit.
That's a bullshit test though. Yes, you could do 4 + 3, 3 + 4, 4 - (-3), 4 + 1 + 1 + 1, Here, we all understand the importance of knowing how you can manipulate numbers, but really this sort of thing just turns people off maths if it isn't presented properly.
No, it's more like you draw a set of four lines and a set of three lines and put them together and get seven lines (or use your fingers like they said). This is for like kindergarten/first grade.
These kids cant be older than 7. Theres no way they're doing of addition negative numbers yet.
Honestly I've taken higher calculus courses, and even I would hesitate on this one. Like, how am I supposed to break that down into simpler components? Thats about as bare as I can think to make it without unnecessarily complicating it (or using the new common core concepts) Its clearly a test question written according to the way the lesson was taught in the book but it doesnt really correspond to how people actually think about numbers. So the only way youd know how to answer isnt if you have a firm grasp on math, but if you have a firm grasp on the specific lesson in which you're teacher covered this.
understanding ways to make 8, for example, builds number sense. my first graders suck at it. cuz they have no number sense yet.

Honestly, even as an adult this confuses me and I don't know what answer they're looking for. How do you add those two numbers together? Either you have it memorized (which is how most of us would come up with the answer) or you count it out somehow (e.g. using your fingers).

This reminds me of when I was a kid, we'd be given a really hard word and we have to use it in a sentence. So if the word was lexicon, shithead me would write: Water-and-Watches does not know what lexicon means.
I argued it was still a sentence and did it multiple times. Teachers eventually had to use a different question since then.
[deleted] ยท 522 points ยท Posted at 16:22:05 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I did the same thing!
I'd just make up some sentence that is 100% correct in all grammatical aspects but shows no understanding of the word.
I remember when I was a kid, we learned the word "syllable" one week. So for several eeeks following, being the genius I am, whenever I got stumped on a vocabulary test and needed to use a word in a sentence, I just counted its syllables. Thus, every time I didn't know a word, my example would be, "Lexicon has three syllables. "
I remember having to write out example sentences for our spelling test words, so I just wrote '[list of spelling words that I've completely forgotten because it was like 15 years ago] are my spelling test words for this week.'
Teacher let me have that one, and then told me to never do it again.

Pretty sure 8 year olds are developed enough to draw the distinction between using and mentioning, hence other 8 year olds doing the assignment the right way.
Granted that my reference was in the context of analytical philosophy. However, "use vs. mention" was taught to me in English class in junior high school. Apparently, that isn't universally the case.

I did something similar in a math class. We were learning about parabolas and the story question was about an airplane that was flying and would drop a ball. 23 had to measure the curve that the ball would drop.
I wouldn't let go that the only way for this math to work would be with zero wind resistance, but if that were the case then the airplane couldn't fly in the first place.
I wish I had studied math as hard as I studied being a smart ass.
My one genius friend decided that while learning about the American Revolution, he didn't like the lengthy "Lexington and Concord" so he decided to abbreviate to Lexingcon on all the homework and eventually our test.
Let's just say our teacher didn't appreciate it as much as I did.
When I was in 4th grade, we had a list of spelling words and had to "use each one in a sentence." I decided to save myself some work and just make one long run-on sentence that used all 10-15 words. I had to redo that assignment, even though I realize now it was probably more work trying to get all these disparate words to fit together in one grammatically correct sentence.

On the *border of Earth's *orbit the *fourth spaceship NASA ever made came *forward with a *force of a great magnitude in *order to reach the moon until it couldn't go *anymore and was stuck in space, meanwhile on Earth a man tried to *pour some water, the *source of which was a bag meant for those who play *sports, which was ideal as he was a golfer, and while he did this a child with a *sore leg came to him, and this kid *wore a blue shirt that said "I *support my local sports!" and had a *portrait of a fat man, and he remarked that it was an odd shirt and the kid said "Just *ignore it," but he couldn't since it was so strange, so he went further along the golf *course in his cart, and when he did the kid followed him, asking whether he could take him back to hole one, to which the man replied "Get there *yourself!" after which he was promptly sucked into a *tornado, which was a peculiar happening as he was in the desert.

They changed it because they got smartass kids like those.
Or fantastic....I teach in a middle school and kids try this stuff all the time. They still make a T also look like an F also for true and false, a technique dating back to the 1100's I believe.

I teach adults in construction apprenticeships, and they try this too. I mark it wrong. "That's just how I write!" . Okay, allow me to show you on the board how a T and an F are supposed to look like. You know, for future reference.

I always state to my kids that it is their responsibility to communicate their knowledge to me. The test is just the medium for them to do it in. If they want to pull stuff like this and make it so I can't technically mark them wrong, that's fine, but I also can't mark them right, and that's the important part.
In the UK you have to (or at least had to) do standardised tests in the year that you're between 10 and 11. They used to do these where you had to draw a line between three options. They always had the exact same pattern. Presumably to make it easier for the markers. I don't know whether they just assumed that 11 year olds were too dumb to work it out or what, but it was transparent as hell.

Just a guess, but it might be in order to train your brain to interpret data formatted in different ways. Or it could be just someones random idea that caught on in a workshop.
Loki-L ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 18:46:35 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
So the correct answers would have been? My best guess:
1A ...elephone - to america
2F ...illin - from the local m--
3D ... and Juliet - by Shakespeare
4B ...n - by Louis Lassen
5E ...st cartoon - in 1989
6C ...na Lisa - by Leonardo da Vin...
The Simpson tv show premiered in 1989 (not counting the Tracy Ullman shorts).
Louis Lassen apparently invented the hamburger which has nothing to do with any illin or elephone and happened long before 1989 so I guess that would make him the answer for 4 by default.
The first two are just a guess but It think it may be about the first transatlantic phonecall and the invention of penicillin so 1A and 2F

My English professor has actually argued in class against having a completely standardized spelling system. I'm not going to go into specifics but apparently only having one correct way to spell something is relatively new, especially when compared to her research area (medievalism).

No, the kid will go home, turn to prayer, be rewarded with a blizzard, study as hard as he can, still fail the test, but remember one answer as "applied knowledge" before the credits roll on that sweet Simpsons theme.
The James L. Brooks touch- end every early episode not with a punchline (as in mid-period Simpsons) or an unrelated comic tag (as in late-period Simpsons), but with an only-barely-earned sentimental ending. Maximum schmaltz.

Surely if they know the exact question they'll spend the 2 minutes to look it up?
That's assuming a lot. Say the kid doesn't care. Say you've got a class of 30 kids that don't care. Why is it the teacher's sole responsibility to make those kids care? Yeah, they should try and make it interesting as well as try and connect with the students, but at some point it stops being the teacher's fault and becomes the parent's or the student's or other surrounding factors like social problems, community environment, etc. And sometimes a kid deserves an F and it's not the teachers fault in the slightest โ kids can just be stubborn like that. If teachers are told that they're failures because a handful of stubborn children refuse to learn, then that teacher is going to burn out from no fault of their own.
Source: am a student. Classmates drive me crazy sometimes.
I'm taking issue with the framing of winning and losing, I'm not saying the student's success is exclusively the teacher's responsibility. I'm just saying no teacher would consider failing a student a victory.

Not to mention, if those are the answers than you should be able to pick out the question by contextual clues alone. A destination, hamburger guy, artist, playwright, date, etc. You'd have to have no idea what was going on that day to not get it by process of elimination alone.

But nothing on the left looks to relate to hamburgers!
And nothing on the right looks to relate to telephones! EDIT: Maybe it's "Buy a telephone...from the local m???"
And one of the "questions" looks like it's supposed to be "first cartoon."
I had no clue who Louis Lassen was and the first google result mentioned a hamburger stand..... so forgive me.
Obviously, the first cartoon was written by Shakespeare, drawn by Da Vinci.
willux ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:30:51 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
I had to look up Louis Lassen too. It's weird because some of them looks like general knowledge questions "[Romeo] and Juliet...by Shakespeare", "[The Mo]na Lisa...by Leonardo da Vin[ci]."
Based off the clear left side questions, we can guess that only about three or four letters were cut off. It looks like number 2 is "[???]illin", and I can't think of any English words that end like that.
We can figure this out!
sje46 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:43:02 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah, I'm really confused what the answers are actually supposed to be.
It seems like this teacher atually thinks the Simpsons was the first cartoon.
1. Telephone A. To America
2. #illin B. by Louis Lassen
3. Romeo and Juliet C. By Leonardo Da Vinci
4. ####n D. By Shakespeare
5. [Firs]t Cartoon E. in 1989
6. The Mona Lisa F. From the local mu[seum?]
The answer to 3 is clearly D. Answer to 6 is clearly C.
1. Telephone A.To America
2. #illin B. by Louis Lassen
4. ###n E. in 1989
5 [Firs]t Cartoon F. From the local mu[seum?]
Googling it, looks like Louis Lassen is credited with inventing the hamburger. My best guess is that 1989 refers to the Simpsons, which started in 1989. Perhaps it doesn't actually say "First". Maybe it says Best or Greatest?
Also to be considered is spacing on the left side. We don't see the start of any item so we're not sure if it's "Mona Lisa" or "The Mona Lisa". We know Romeo And Juliet has 5 characters omitted which I think indicates that it's "The Mona Lisa", which means we can except about 5 or so characters taken off the beginning of each item. Okay, so...what KInd of telephone? "Rotary' is too long. Cell Phone perhaps? Cell phones were invented before 1989.
None of this makes any damn sense. Can anyone make sense of it?
willux ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:02:06 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Could "[???]illin" be a name?
Perhaps "Radiotelephone...to america"?
One thing to consider is that we have a "to America" answer, which suggests this set of questions is from another country. So we have to think about alternative vernaculars.
Anyone who hasn't become used to mediocrity because that's all they ever achieve or put out in life anymore and just can't even remember the satisfaction of doing a job well.
Mediocrity might even be a bit strong. Maybe abject failure would be better? You should look into why that's ok to you.
My schools were always % based. Homework was usually small, but enough that it could kill a GPA.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:18:34 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Homework was 10% of my grade going through school and even into college it's remained 10%. So let's say I have 10 assignments (which is really undercutting it, I generally had a lot more but 10 is easy to work with) and of those 10 I get a 0 for one and 100 for the rest. The grade would average out to a 90 which would still be an acceptable grade and again homework is only 10% of the overall grade. If you're going this hard speaking about 'mediocracy' and whatnot when it comes to homework then I have doubts as to how much you actually understand the words you use.
My schools also did the % system, but usually with enough weight that any "zero effort" would sink your grade.
Beyond that, yes, I would consider not doing 10% of my weighted work "mediocre", even if it still got me a 90. Considering that an iota of effort would have made that an A (usually >92).
[deleted] ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 17:24:57 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
A's were 90+ for me and still are. Every school I've gone to used the 10 point scale.
And mine didn't. Which just proves that we're both spouting conjecture and using anecdotal evidence to back it up and no basis to judge the OP on.
So a pretty typical reddit comment chain.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:45:20 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Uhh no. You're grandstanding like crazy and judging others from your high horse because they didn't do one homework assignment perfectly. There's no real special case going on here. It's not like a 10 point grading scale makes me not act like a jackass.
Like seriously do you even read the bullshit you write? You're saying that someone is fine with failure and being only mediocre in life because they didn't do ONE homework assignment as asked of them. I guess if you have nothing else in your life outside of highschool homework assignments this might be true.
Maybe instead of judging others and making as grand of statements like you seem to enjoy making you should spend some time looking inwards and stop immediately assuming things based off the smallest iota of "evidence".
we're both spouting conjecture and using anecdotal evidence to back it up and no basis to judge the OP on.
Such as the assumptions you're making, both about me and the OP.
stop immediately assuming things based off the smallest iota of "evidence".
E...exactly?
Besides, again yes, I feel perfectly comfortable judging someone who tries to pull one over like this when I've always at least made an effort. Be as sanctimonious as you want, doesn't change the situation here.
I think anyone who tries can grandstand over a trickster any day.
And AGAIN, as we BOTH have said, we have no info on this and are BOTH heavily flavoring it with our own preconceived notions and personal experience! SO SHOULD PROBABLY STOP HERE.
Honestly if you don't know who wrote Romeo and Juliet or who painted the Mona Lisa I feel kinda bad for you I'm hoping this is the work of like a 4 year old

On a math test in second grade I had to answer the math problem: "John has a couple of apples. He gives Joan 3 apples. John has 2 apples left. How many apples did John have to begin with?"
Your teacher should be marked down for that question if that's really how it was written. "Couple" is two. She should have said "some" apples.
hognir ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 10:49:56 on October 17, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I translated it from Icelandic. We kind of use "couple" as "some" when speaking English. But you are right, "some" would have been a better translation.
Reminds me of the time we graded each others quizzes in health class (one of the few classes that wasn't separated by intelligence groups.) The quiz was T/F. The guy whose quiz I graded put a combo TF for each answer. So I marked all of the them wrong. He complained to the teacher, so she let him choose whether his symbol meant T or F. Of course, this was after the grading and 7 of the 10 were T, so he picked T.

It always amazes me that students can be that clever to figure something like that out, but aren't clever enough to figure out a way to just learn the answers.
Sometimes they know the answer, but hate busy work that, "has to be completed" so they just make up fun answers. In high school the tests were weighted enough to pass without doing homework, so if you knew the material it didn't matter if you didn't do homework.
martymar ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:03:35 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
There is a lot of truth in what you say, but most of my students that do really well, don't treat homework as "busy work". I do have those two or three kids that can never study, yet ace every test. The sad thing is they get a B, because they can't be bothered to do the work.
Didn't go to MLk, but I did get straight A's w/o doing any HW. One of my teachers did drop the bomb on me the day before midterms that HW was 40% of our grades. The Bs and Cs didn't inspire me sadly. First trimester in a competitive private school was rough though.
I don't think you know what clever means. Studying does not make you clever.
martymar ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:26:06 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
A common misconception. Studying is basically working out your brain. Getting it to be able to respond in ways you're not used to, will help you increase your cleverness. it's a trick question the kid had the right answer (google it, you'll see.) Akk of them were trick questions and the kid got them all right ... not sure why he got an F, unless the teacher gives everyone Fs on the pretest to make some sort of point. (it being full of trick questions is a sign.)
I don't think it's so much of a hoax as it is just somebody printing off a list of questions.
Nobody would actually believe that somehow all these questions belong to the same class, especially seen as they're vague, nothing even relevant to any sort of academic work, and totally random.
I appreciate the attempt at gaming the system, but if the teacher wanted to be appropriately pedantic, she'd point out that those aren't lines, they're curves.
the test wasn't a geometry test; applying a definition of a word that suits one specific application to a separate application isn't pedantic, it's just plain wrong. Essentially you're trying to answer "these speakers are odd sounding" with "sounding is a measure of depth and has nothing to do with audio!"

High school teacher here. I would let this example slide one time because it's funny- and probably the only A the kid will earn in the class. But your #s 2&3 still stick as incorrect and the #4 would just result in a zero until the kid turned it in (my district won't let us penalize late work- but kids who use #4 as an excuse are the kind who get logjammed up with missing work and have to work twice as hard to catch up).

In the 2nd grade, I got one of these types of worksheets for the first time in my life. Back then, I thought that having all the lines intersect at the middle would make it look like I cheated, so being the square that I was, I drew all the lines in different patterns to make them more distinguishable.
My teacher handed it back to me the second I turned it in and told me "No."

Kind of? You might see it curving away from you, like a road going over the horizon. But if it's a geodesic (the shortest path between two points in a space), you could follow it without turning around at all, as though it were straight.
So if you could get information about the curve ahead of you, you could tell, but if you closed your eyes you'd have no idea.
b_dont_gild_my_vibe ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:30:17 on October 17, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The brain is a funny thing.

Symbol called thorn: ร. Eventually we found anoyer way; that is, "th", but "ye" for "the" has stuck with us to some degree.
My history might be a little off but that's the basic story.

angry_albatross ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:08:08 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I really like overanalyzing things, so...
DecoysLoisDecoys ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 19:55:56 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
What an argument.
angry_albatross ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:55:43 on October 17, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:01:19 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Depends on how you interpret the language. 1895 ended in the start of 1896, similar to the way a party ends in everyone going home.
It's probably not the way you'd most often say it, but it's true enough.
Crixomix ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 19:57:41 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

By the time 1896 started, 1895 had already ended. In order for 1895 to end in 1896 it would have to have some overlap. A place where it is both 1895 & 1896 at the same time temporarily.
Saying 1895 ended in 1896 makes about as much sense as saying 1894 ended in 1896. Neither did, they both ended BEFORE 1896, not during.
I'll "wait for your dumbass" response...

Technically it's based on the time of place. Say it with me, "time of place". Just because it's midnight in Dubai doesn't also make it midnight in Colorado. It was never 1895 & 1896 at the same place & at the same time.
There still isn't an overlap in time.
ssup3rm4n ยท 41 points ยท Posted at 16:25:52 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Im guessing because it technically ended on dec 31, 1895 at 11:59:59 pm.

No, using nothing but linear observation, 12/31/95 11:59:59 is still 1895, its not, not 1895 until 1896, so 1896 is the end of 1895. 1896 12:00:00.
T00FEW ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 17:09:14 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

Exactly! It hasn't ended if it's ongoing. It's only ended once it no longer is. So at 11 59 99 it's still 1895, so it can't have ended (past tense) until 1896 has begun.
CoogleGhrome ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:16:59 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I believe you mean 11:59:59:999.
Anyway, it's still true that any time before 12:00:00 is in 1895, so the year doesn't end in 1896, it ends exactly before 1896.

Then how does that logic not carry over to dates? The last instance (or heartbeat, if you will) of 1895 happens at 12-31-95 at 11:59:59. Therefore, 1895 ends, or dies, in 1895.
Or am I missing something?

I think that I see what you are saying... 1895 can't end until 1896, because until 1/1/16 0:00:00, it is still 1895.
You're not denying that 12/31/95 23:59:59 is the last instance of 1895, only that it can't end until the year actually changes.
Using my example of death, your date of death cannot be determined until there is a change in your life status. Death (1896) ends life (1895), not your last heartbeat (12/31/95@23:59:59).

foxymama04 ยท 91 points ยท Posted at 16:48:42 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
This is actually a perfectly acceptable answer. For math at that age, you just want to understand a child's thinking. So this child counted on their fingers (counting up strategy) and could also count up in their head. They could also mean that this is a fact the child just knows, which is great and is also something we aim for at that age.
Cheesemacher ยท 30 points ยท Posted at 17:28:19 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

In my experience, teachers hated when you just know something. Like if I'm getting lucky on 3 or 4 answers out of 10, sure I'll explain how I got there. If I'm acing all of this easy unit, come on.
foxymama04 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:40:38 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Being that this is such an early age, probably first grade by the looks of it, these kids will be focused on memorizing simple addition facts like that so they can build up to more complicated facts. If a kid told me that, I would be pleased that the child had memorized that fact, because it would mean they were ready for more difficult facts. Every teacher is different of course, as is every grade, but this would be my personal reaction.
Ephemeral_Halcyon ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:27:19 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Here these would be acceptable answers at a kinder level in more of a whole-group conversation setting when just beginning to discuss how to solve math problems.
trentblase ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 17:42:38 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Then the test should say:
Show how to solve 3+4 using any two of the following methods:
model base 10 blocks
draw a number line
etc
Ephemeral_Halcyon ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:34:03 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
It says exactly that.
The kids aren't handed these worksheets with zero lead-in.
5redrb ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:34:45 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I'm not totally familiar with it but common core wants more (assuming that the kid is at that level). They want stuff like 4+3 is 4+4-1 or 4+2+1.
foxymama04 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:50:03 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Well, that's what you teach in the hopes that they'll use strategies such as that. First graders aren't at the point where they need to worry about standardized tests. Most of the math they're learning is completely new, and the idea is that they'll make use of and be able to explain these strategies by second grade. Honestly I'd need a whole lot more information to judge this situation. This is only one teacher's opinion.
5redrb ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:25:38 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I could be that the single digit math has been memorized and ingrained in my head for years but some of that stuff is confusing. With larger numbers its easier but with single digits it's like buying a roadmap to get next door.
5redrb ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:31:53 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

foxymama04 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:43:55 on October 17, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Every school does it differently. My kids do 20 in one minute, and they're third graders. They only do addition and subtraction though. Next year they'll add memorizing the multiplication and division facts.
5redrb ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:21:07 on October 17, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

That's a bullshit test though. Yes, you could do 4 + 3, 3 + 4, 4 - (-3), 4 + 1 + 1 + 1, Here, we all understand the importance of knowing how you can manipulate numbers, but really this sort of thing just turns people off maths if it isn't presented properly.
HillaryShitsInDiaper ยท 47 points ยท Posted at 17:10:43 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
No, it's more like you draw a set of four lines and a set of three lines and put them together and get seven lines (or use your fingers like they said). This is for like kindergarten/first grade.
Polaritical ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 18:21:30 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
So the only way youd know how to answer isnt if you have a firm grasp on math, but if you have a firm grasp on the specific lesson in which you're teacher covered this.
thekingofwinter ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:57:29 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
understanding ways to make 8, for example, builds number sense. my first graders suck at it. cuz they have no number sense yet.
5redrb ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:37:06 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
I've seen a little of that, it seems like they are using simple numbers to teach advanced concepts that will be useful with larger numbers. Seems like a good idea but sometimes it seems like buying a plane ticket to fly around the world to get a beer out of your fridge.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:43:08 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
If you memorized the multiplication tables you could do 2 times 3 plus 1. And kids are suppose to memorize their tables.
redlaWw ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:24:49 on October 17, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
As a maths student, the only acceptable way to do it is to note that
4+3 = 4+S(2) = S(4+2)
and
S(4+2) = S(4+S(1)) = S(S(4+1))
and
S(S(4+1)) = S(S(4+S(0))) = S(S(S(4+0)))
and
S(S(S(4+0) = S(S(S(4))) = S(S(5)) = S(6) = 7
so
4+3 = 7

Honestly, even as an adult this confuses me and I don't know what answer they're looking for. How do you add those two numbers together? Either you have it memorized (which is how most of us would come up with the answer) or you count it out somehow (e.g. using your fingers).
What else do they want?

I remember when I was a kid, we learned the word "syllable" one week. So for several eeeks following, being the genius I am, whenever I got stumped on a vocabulary test and needed to use a word in a sentence, I just counted its syllables. Thus, every time I didn't know a word, my example would be, "Lexicon has three syllables. "

If you're at an age where you're being asked to use a word in a sentence or draw a line to the correct answer, your grades don't matter.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:07:10 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
They absolutely did. I was allowed to go home as soon as my homework for that week was done, and only if the grades were good.
I had lots of free time because of that. (relatively. as in, 10 hours a day as opposed to a "mere" 6 hours)
I can't believe I thought school was demanding back then.

Reminds me of an assignment I had to do in University class about Web Design. The final project was about creating a website that includes all the HTML tags, Javascript, CSS stuff that we learned during class.
Had a hard time thinking about what the website would actually be about. Got perfect score by creating a Web Design tutorial site and implemented everything as demonstration and sample codes. XD

I agree there was no reason for rudeness (though there wasn't much), but saying someone's bent out of shape isn't rude.
Also, using hyperbole in criticism crosses the line into ranting. That's the difference in this case.

So the correct answers would have been? My best guess:
The Simpson tv show premiered in 1989 (not counting the Tracy Ullman shorts). Louis Lassen apparently invented the hamburger which has nothing to do with any illin or elephone and happened long before 1989 so I guess that would make him the answer for 4 by default.
The first two are just a guess but It think it may be about the first transatlantic phonecall and the invention of penicillin so 1A and 2F

You don't "win" as a teacher when the kid gets an F. You "win" when the kid gets an A. If the kid fails, you both lose.

Ember_Rising ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 17:22:46 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

You'd have to have no idea what was going on that day to not get it by process of elimination alone.
willux ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:20:58 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
But nothing on the left looks to relate to hamburgers!
And nothing on the right looks to relate to telephones! EDIT: Maybe it's "Buy a telephone...from the local m???"
And one of the "questions" looks like it's supposed to be "first cartoon."
SadlyIamJustaHead ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:25:23 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
The answer to 3 is clearly D. Answer to 6 is clearly C.
Googling it, looks like Louis Lassen is credited with inventing the hamburger. My best guess is that 1989 refers to the Simpsons, which started in 1989. Perhaps it doesn't actually say "First". Maybe it says Best or Greatest?
Also, number 3 is a bit concerning since there aren't many words that end with illin.

SadlyIamJustaHead ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:19:50 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
SadlyIamJustaHead ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:22:47 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I guess if you have nothing else in your life outside of
highschoolhomework assignments this might be true.Maybe instead of judging others and making as grand of statements like you seem to enjoy making you should spend some time looking inwards and stop immediately assuming things based off the smallest iota of "evidence".
SadlyIamJustaHead ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 18:17:12 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Such as the assumptions you're making, both about me and the OP.
E...exactly?
Besides, again yes, I feel perfectly comfortable judging someone who tries to pull one over like this when I've always at least made an effort. Be as sanctimonious as you want, doesn't change the situation here.

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:11:31 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
Why do you need two backslashes to escape a backslash? Does a double backslash have some other meaning?
Mynameisnotdoug ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:15:42 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*
The first backslash escapes the second backslash. The third backslash escapes the underscore, which starts an italic section in markdown.
If you only use two, you get ยฏ\(ใ)/ยฏ where the lower part of the arms become italic delimiters, and makes the face italic.

Your teacher should be marked down for that question if that's really how it was written. "Couple" is two. She should have said "some" apples.

Of course, this was after the grading and 7 of the 10 were T, so he picked T.

mattindustries ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:54:15 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)
The sad thing is they get a B, because they can't be bothered to do the work.

the test wasn't a geometry test; applying a definition of a word that suits one specific application to a separate application isn't pedantic, it's just plain wrong. Essentially you're trying to answer "these speakers are odd sounding" with "sounding is a measure of depth and has nothing to do with audio!"

First class ticket to flunking town.
I don't think I had any teachers that would even remotely put up with a stunt like:
The above photo
The sloppy "True False" T that could also kind of be an F.
The confusingly shaded or not shaded in multiple choice circle bubble.
The "My file got corrupted when I sent it to you" trick.
Those were just all instant fails/incorrect marks.
Devchonachko ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:55:33 on October 16, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I argued with my teacher who would not give in. He then referred the issue to the Guidance Dean who told me to also give up on it. I didn't.
It then went to the principal who laughed at me and told the teacher to mark the whole assignment zero.
