Your original complaint was that people called Colin Powell African American. I agree that the term is pretty ridiculous, but he is as much African American as Morgan Freeman, Eddie Murphy, or anyone else usually associated with it.
Because calling someone black, brown or white is the equivalent of painting your face black, sticking your lips out and dancing like a monkey now.
As a Canadian with friends from pretty much all imaginable decents and colors, I've discussed this issue many times and the only conclusion I could come to with said friends is that the United States kinda want to make up for what they did by any mean.
Sad thing is, the only mean they've come up with so far is pickering, which is, understandably, pretty ironic.

My neighborhood is full of Sudanese and Somalians refugees and they're extremely easy to tell apart; totally different skin tones and accents.
White Americans have learned black & white, but there honestly is no white race; the concept of "white people" was created to deny dark folks Constitutional rights.
I am descended from Norwegians and Swiss, I am considered white, but I am simply American.
Yeah man being on here too long gives me a bad attitude towards white people. I have to step back and realize the internet brings the worse out of people, and that reddit doesn't represent the whole population, it's mostly a select audience of nerds/gamers/loners.

A bunch of outspoken students at select campuses do not reflect every single person. The same way Pro-Rape white kids at California Universities don't represent all whites.

Jamaican-American is more of a nationality while African-American is just a lump summed colloquialism for the ethnicity of black people in America so you're both right

I have no idea why you have so many upvotes as your comment was wrong, in this context. If you are a black person living in Africa, then you are indeed african. However, so is every other person living in african (white, black, yellow, red, pink, etc). Plus, nobody that lives in africa calls themselves an african. They (usually) identify themselves by nationality, tribal affiliation or even possibly language or religion. So neither african nor american tells us anything useful to us about who you are describing. I have never heard anyone from africa call themselves an "african american." I am certain everyone would laugh if they did.
Also: I never did see those racist comments you referred to. Maybe they got taken down or were you possibly a bit triggered by this topic?

The Gambia is a little country on the west coast of Africa. It is commonly joked that the borders are what could be hit by English boats on the Gambia river.
The Gambia is entirely enclosed within a somewhat Pacman-like Senegal (but is not one of the world's 3 enclave nations as it has a small [~3km] border on the ocean).

It is weird, on some broadcasts they show the Aleve logo on the booths, and on some they do not. You are both right.
Watch the video, don't just listen to it and look away. It clearly has "the answer is ALEVE" printed in the center of the screen, in the same coloration as a hand-written response required. Time stamp is 8 seconds if you can't be bother to watch all 11.

On its own it makes more sense that way, so people with their sound off can understand the 'the answer is aleve'. If the ad had text that just said "what is" and the picture of Aleve it wouldn't make any sense out of context.

I see it in Canada every episode. The local station here just picks up the KOMO (ABC) feed where it's syndicated, and nothing is blacked out, as far as I can tell.
You had it right the first time. Jeopardy is sponsored by Aleve, but they sometimes display ALEVE where the contestants' names usually are at the end of the game.

no, mate. rhyming has to do with the end of the word. these words both end with -geria. Not a slant rhyme at all. a slant rhyme would be like bridge and grudge. both end with the -dge but the vowel sounds do not match.
Well they're not perfect rhymes then. And as strict Jeopardy is with things, I'm pretty sure whenever they're looking for rhymes they must be perfect rhymes

We watch Jeopardy at the dinner table every night as a family. Without fail, when they ask the final Jeopardy question my father yells out "ALEVE!" at the top of his lungs every damn time. When this guy put ALEVE as his answer I thought we were all going to die from choking on our food from laughing so hard.

I think the category was "homonyms", in which case Jennings was wrong, because the words are singular. "Hoe" the gardening tool is spelled differently from "Ho" the semi-disparaging term for a woman of uneasy virtue. If the category were "homophones", Jennings would have a case.
Edit: Assuming /u/BrainOnLoan was right, and the category was "Tool Time", my point still stands. "Hoe" and "Ho" are different words that sound the same, while "Rake" and "Rake" are the same word with two different meanings. I suspect they counted Jennings wrong on that basis. "Ho" is not a word for a tool.

The entire Hazards of Love album is one large operatic narrative, but it's not as accessible as their other work. It's hit or miss for a lot of people. I personally love it.
Rake is used often in period romance novels. I didn't think you had to actually be older though. Search for rake in the books category on amazon and you'll find all kinds of fabio shit.
The last commercial before final jeopardy is usually an ad for Aleve. Along the lines of "This pill is very good and you should buy it" answer "What is Aleve?"

My wife was a contestant last year and I went to the taping. The Aleve ad is actually shown on the studio screens during recording, I guess because it's easier than editing it in post. So yeah, he ought to know the joke. He hears it 5 times a day.
it helped that it was in a Tournament of Champs, and the dude (eventual champ) was winning in a runaway. These "Fun" answers are always more enjoyable coming from runaway winners than from stumped losers.
I like that dude, even though he's stone-faced as he plays. The other one i'm thinking of is the kid from the college tournament a few years ago that gave a "Who cares? i just won $75,000!" answers
Or the dude on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire who used one lifeline in the whole game, on the last question, just to call up his dad and say, "Hey Dad, just calling to let you know I'm going to win a million dollars." That was awesome.

I know you're joking, but the idea of the peace prize came to Nobel when a newspaper mistakingly ran his obituary when he wasn't dead yet. He was so appaled by the raw print of his legacy that he decided to promote peace by awarding a yearly prize.
Nobel died in 1896 and he did not leave an explanation for choosing peace as a prize category.
What you said was his reasoning for giving out the prizes as a group. The peace prize was just one of the five.

I think Nobel more wanted there to be a demonstration and then all the countries swear off war forever, as opposed to the tense "if I nuke them then I'm fucked" scenario that exists now. It's basically the same thing, sure, but not nearly as amicable.
I think Nobel's idea was centered more on how horrific modern war was for soldiers and civilians, versus MAD relies more on people in power acting in self-preservation.
The elite had to be in peril not just the soldiers. As long as millions of people could be slain within months on the western front in WWI or the eastern front in WWII while the people in charge were comparebly safe at home (although this was changing during the wars with air warfare becoming more and more prevelant) they didn't care. It was only when the people in charge faced those odds that wars changed.
Millions of lifes threatened don't prevent wars. The few thousand lifes of the people in charge are what makes the difference. They can hide from conventional weapons but not from nuclear arms.

Thats an important point because by raw numbers thats not true. Admittedly WW2 is still by far the bloodiest time, and comparatively it really is quite peaceful.
Just out of curiosity: How else would you measure peace?
By percentage of population seems like a pretty reasonable way to measure over the course of time when the total population changes rapidly. It would be awfully hard to compare eras when the populations were/are so vastly different.
I'd say it is important to pay attention to where the conflicts are focused. Surely this isn't the most peaceful time for Iraq and Afghanistan. So how can we be comfortable with our peace when we really just swept it under other rugs?
Because statistically, using percentages, it is the most peaceful time for the entire world. That's how we can be comfortable with our peace: because never has so much of human population been spared from war. I'm not sure what exactly you think is going on here, but if I say "Never have we had fewer cases of polio", responding "YEA BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE POLIO HOW DO YOU THINK THEY FEEL" is the most asinine and faux-moralistic attempt at making yourself seem ethical that I can even imagine. Just because the location moves of conflict, doesn't mean the general peacefulness of the world hasn't gone down. Before Afghanistan became very fucked up due to Western influence, in other areas there was immense conflict.

I think you could make a compelling, more holistic argument that increases in the interactive span of human society have formed a basis for this situation to exist. I'm not seeking to deny the role of MAD by any means, but I also wouldn't say that other factors are "negligible."
I think it's important to look at the changing context of world relations as a whole, within which MAD is a huge factor, when trying to work out why we work as we do in recent decades/years. The increased globalisation of society, of capitalism and industry in particular, has the effect of bridging gaps to essentially reduce the number of levels at which conflict is productive for those who hold the capital and the power to enact it.
Basically, the increased role of international economic politics is not just a negligible factor. It's a core component of the current situation in which this most peaceful period exists. When countries have to compete on an international scale founded upon more than what they can do in largely isolated economic terms, the reluctance to disrupt essential contributors to stability becomes a greater factor in deciding whether armed conflict is worthwhile or not.
Essentially, pure-economic competition has been increasingly eating away the traditional international form of literal domination, from which you could then leverage further economic gain. The middle man of war is being increasingly bypassed. Not to say its anywhere near gone, but it becomes more targeted rather than the only option. America may invade Iraq, but it employs the services of China. And obviously this isn't an inherently new idea, international cooperation has existed for a long time, but as these gaps are bridged in practice it becomes more and more contextually preferable.

its because (i think) the slash thinks its being used in a command, and so makes itself scarce. i believe you have to put a couple of slashes to nullify that, IE:
It's because the \ is used as a formatting character. For example, that's why people use \s to mean sarcasm. Sarcasm isn't really a formatting element, but if it was, that's how you would apply it. So the commenter interprets the \ as part of a formatting thing, and thus hides it. If you use two \s it will stay.
Quick question: whenever I try to do ¯_(ツ)_/¯ despite pasting the full thing and looking normal in the little editor the live preview/real is missing the left arm...
My favorite was the guy who was playing against Ken Jennings, standing in the center podium, and losing pretty badly (as most people did against Ken). He wrote "What is See Next Podium ------>", with the arrow pointing right.
Unfortunately, the guy drew the arrow to his right, meaning Ken, so we see an arrow pointing stage right, meaning the third contestant.
Fortunately, Ken got it wrong and the third contestant got it right, so he ends up looking like a genius.
If you think about it, counting it would have been an incredible dick move, since he would have finished in second place ahead of the woman who actually knew it.

short answer is IBM made a super computer called Watson that's better at understanding natural human language than previous computers and tested/promoted it by having it compete against jeopardy champions.
I think I remember that being the case, though a quick wiki search failed to turn up any sources.
Either way, that particular aspect would be well within our reach (not hard enough to withhold credit for). Speech to text is pretty solid these days, and they could have plugged into Trebek's mic. Combined with image processing, and a camera pointed right at the game board, it would have been fairly trivial for this super-computer to have managed reading/hearing the questions on its own.
But it would not have proved anything. Any image processing college student could pull that part off with normal hardware. Slightly modified off the shelf software would cover the speech processing with high accuracy.
If you are holding out for more, ask for Watson to never make comically nonsensical mistakes. Like when it suggested that Toronto was a U.S. city. Or when it misformed answers like "What is leg?". Goofy mistakes that really no human on the show would ever make. Because Watson can make mistakes that will send it widely in the wrong direction; and there are no instincts to pull him back. There's no intelligence there to get a true understanding of what is being asked. It's just very good at using keywords to search through large banks of data.
Sure, I should have worded the failure a bit better. It was agreed that he failed (and listed a Canadian city) because U.S. Cities was the category and not in the question. If he said "Totonto" because it was a U.S. city, then it is even a bigger failure because there are probably not too many 1,000 pop cities with 2 commercial airports.
That's pretty much how it worked. They only allowed it to start figuring out the answer as soon as Alex finished the question.
Regardless, that's not the point of the Watson project. The point was NLP and analytics. Speech-to-text is not difficult to implement and it's been around. A good NLP and analytics system that's fast enough was not possible up to that point.
Siri is merely a speech-to-text with some basic AI algorithms behind it. Google search also has "basic" algorithms compared to the NLP of Watson.
Watson isn't speech-to-text. It's not even a feature in the Watson stack (Watson is a stack of various open/closed source technologies). The voice IBM added onto it was done simply to make people like Watson and put a human element onto it.
That's not to say though that speech-to-text isn't possible in a Watson application, because it can be easily integrated onto a Watson system if it serves a purpose.

To be fair, that's not exactly a difficult task. Thats like a 5 minute job for a hungover 19 year old intern in 1995. Image processing like that has been around for a long time (especially when we're talking about Jeopardy, where all the text is of a single clear font on a plain blue background)

This is so incorrect that it's actually quite funny.
Optical character recognition has been around for a while, sure, but it's only somewhat recently become refined to the point of being usable in a realtime environment within the last ~5 years or so.
On a typical home computer, true (depending on the complexity of the subject, anyway). On a massive server cluster like Watson, I doubt it would have been an issue even in the late 90s

I think you overestimate the power a 90s supercomputer actually had.
And you overestimate the difficulty of text recognition in such controlled conditions. Its not like it needs to be able to read handwritten text on a dirty wall at an odd angle in the middle of a rainstorm, its a plain font on a plain high contrast background. You can do this on a first generation Raspberry Pi

Yeah, a Raspberry Pi is actually incredibly powerful compared to anything that existed in the 90s. That's not really an apt comparison. Your cell phone out-benchmarks most 20 year old supercomputers, you know.
Except it doesn't. The first RPi had a 700 mhz single core processor and 256 mb RAM. In terms of FLOPS it was about on par with the state of the art in 1992 (the SX-3), and by the mid-late 90s was massively outclassed (even dual core home computers by this point would have outperformed RPi)

Best part is Watson was doing that as a side job. His real purpose was to act as medical diagnostics.
There is a popular movie from about 6 decades ago where a super computer the size of a room is made to take over the job of some archivist/librarians at a film or tv company. It of course ends with that being impossible- to ask it a question and actually get an answer instead of a human. In fact, I think it blows up.
Does anyone remember the final jeopardy in which the contestant wagered a small amount of money and answered with, "who is Joe King?"? Alex had to ask the guy who that person was since it was not at all the answer, the guy replied it was a friend of his, to which Alex asked, "Oh, is that all the guy is worth to you?"
I don't watch much Jeopardy, but is it allowed for Trebek to play pranks on the players? For instance, telling them "who is some guy from Normandy" is actually correct. Because I was just wondering what the guy's reaction would have been if that happened.
Edit: The final question on the show read, “The flower pictured here is called this, also a disparaging term for people on the political left,” as it showed a snapshot of a pink bleeding heart.

The last commercial break before they go to the Final Jeopardy, there is an Aleve advertisement in the form of a Jeopardy answer. They compare themselves to Tylenol and then say, "What is Aleve?"
I prefer "who are three people who have never been in my kitchen." I firmly believe Tony Curtis, Joan Crawford, and whoever the other one was had never been in his kitchen.
Alex Trebek does not like responses like this. If you're going to be humorous, you have to do it while he's making small talk before the game begins. If you do something like this, he'll give you a death stare and make you feel about 2 inches tall. I think I've only seen contestants make him laugh a couple of times.
I remember back in the 90's, I think it was college Jepardy that some dude wagered "A human head". I cant seem to find the clip (full disclosure my trying to find it consisted of me not looking)

I have no idea why you have so many upvotes as your comment was wrong, in this context. If you are a black person living in Africa, then you are indeed african. However, so is every other person living in african (white, black, yellow, red, pink, etc). Plus, nobody that lives in africa calls themselves an african. They (usually) identify themselves by nationality, tribal affiliation or even possibly language or religion. So neither african nor american tells us anything useful to us about who you are describing. I have never heard anyone from africa call themselves an "african american." I am certain everyone would laugh if they did.

The Gambia is a little country on the west coast of Africa. It is commonly joked that the borders are what could be hit by English boats on the Gambia river.
The Gambia is entirely enclosed within a somewhat Pacman-like Senegal (but is not one of the world's 3 enclave nations as it has a small [~3km] border on the ocean).

no, mate. rhyming has to do with the end of the word. these words both end with -geria. Not a slant rhyme at all. a slant rhyme would be like bridge and grudge. both end with the -dge but the vowel sounds do not match.

I think the category was "homonyms", in which case Jennings was wrong, because the words are singular. "Hoe" the gardening tool is spelled differently from "Ho" the semi-disparaging term for a woman of uneasy virtue. If the category were "homophones", Jennings would have a case.
Edit: Assuming /u/BrainOnLoan was right, and the category was "Tool Time", my point still stands. "Hoe" and "Ho" are different words that sound the same, while "Rake" and "Rake" are the same word with two different meanings. I suspect they counted Jennings wrong on that basis. "Ho" is not a word for a tool.

There is an Australian TV show titled Rake that started airing in 2010. I can't remember if they ever explain what a rake is in the show. 2 of the 3 seasons are available on Netflix Instant.
There was also a short lived US show that was based on the Australian series, also called Rake.

No they didn't. The answer has to be a homonym. Ho is different from hoe, where rake and rake are spelled the same. It was a very poorly worded question and the guy who wrote it probably got a boot in the ass by Trebek, but he didn't get the money.

I know you're joking, but the idea of the peace prize came to Nobel when a newspaper mistakingly ran his obituary when he wasn't dead yet. He was so appaled by the raw print of his legacy that he decided to promote peace by awarding a yearly prize.

I think Nobel's idea was centered more on how horrific modern war was for soldiers and civilians, versus MAD relies more on people in power acting in self-preservation.

The elite had to be in peril not just the soldiers. As long as millions of people could be slain within months on the western front in WWI or the eastern front in WWII while the people in charge were comparebly safe at home (although this was changing during the wars with air warfare becoming more and more prevelant) they didn't care. It was only when the people in charge faced those odds that wars changed.
Millions of lifes threatened don't prevent wars. The few thousand lifes of the people in charge are what makes the difference. They can hide from conventional weapons but not from nuclear arms.

By percentage of population seems like a pretty reasonable way to measure over the course of time when the total population changes rapidly. It would be awfully hard to compare eras when the populations were/are so vastly different.

I think you could make a compelling, more holistic argument that increases in the interactive span of human society have formed a basis for this situation to exist. I'm not seeking to deny the role of MAD by any means, but I also wouldn't say that other factors are "negligible."
I think it's important to look at the changing context of world relations as a whole, within which MAD is a huge factor, when trying to work out why we work as we do in recent decades/years. The increased globalisation of society, of capitalism and industry in particular, has the effect of bridging gaps to essentially reduce the number of levels at which conflict is productive for those who hold the capital and the power to enact it.
Basically, the increased role of international economic politics is not just a negligible factor. It's a core component of the current situation in which this most peaceful period exists. When countries have to compete on an international scale founded upon more than what they can do in largely isolated economic terms, the reluctance to disrupt essential contributors to stability becomes a greater factor in deciding whether armed conflict is worthwhile or not.
Essentially, pure-economic competition has been increasingly eating away the traditional international form of literal domination, from which you could then leverage further economic gain. The middle man of war is being increasingly bypassed. Not to say its anywhere near gone, but it becomes more targeted rather than the only option. America may invade Iraq, but it employs the services of China. And obviously this isn't an inherently new idea, international cooperation has existed for a long time, but as these gaps are bridged in practice it becomes more and more contextually preferable.

It's because the \ is used as a formatting character. For example, that's why people use \s to mean sarcasm. Sarcasm isn't really a formatting element, but if it was, that's how you would apply it. So the commenter interprets the \ as part of a formatting thing, and thus hides it. If you use two \s it will stay.

I think I remember that being the case, though a quick wiki search failed to turn up any sources.
Either way, that particular aspect would be well within our reach (not hard enough to withhold credit for). Speech to text is pretty solid these days, and they could have plugged into Trebek's mic. Combined with image processing, and a camera pointed right at the game board, it would have been fairly trivial for this super-computer to have managed reading/hearing the questions on its own.
But it would not have proved anything. Any image processing college student could pull that part off with normal hardware. Slightly modified off the shelf software would cover the speech processing with high accuracy.
If you are holding out for more, ask for Watson to never make comically nonsensical mistakes. Like when it suggested that Toronto was a U.S. city. Or when it misformed answers like "What is leg?". Goofy mistakes that really no human on the show would ever make. Because Watson can make mistakes that will send it widely in the wrong direction; and there are no instincts to pull him back. There's no intelligence there to get a true understanding of what is being asked. It's just very good at using keywords to search through large banks of data.

Sure, I should have worded the failure a bit better. It was agreed that he failed (and listed a Canadian city) because U.S. Cities was the category and not in the question. That's pretty much how it worked. They only allowed it to start figuring out the answer as soon as Alex finished the question.
Regardless, that's not the point of the Watson project. The point was NLP and analytics. Speech-to-text is not difficult to implement and it's been around. A good NLP and analytics system that's fast enough was not possible up to that point.
Siri is merely a speech-to-text with some basic AI algorithms behind it. Google search also has "basic" algorithms compared to the NLP of Watson.
Watson isn't speech-to-text. It's not even a feature in the Watson stack (Watson is a stack of various open/closed source technologies). The voice IBM added onto it was done simply to make people like Watson and put a human element onto it.
That's not to say though that speech-to-text isn't possible in a Watson application, because it can be easily integrated onto a Watson system if it serves a purpose.

Optical character recognition has been around for a while, sure, but it's only somewhat recently become refined to the point of being usable in a realtime environment within the last ~5 years or so.

Its not like it needs to be able to read handwritten text on a dirty wall at an odd angle in the middle of a rainstorm, its a plain font on a plain high contrast background. You can do this on a first generation Raspberry Pi

Except it doesn't. The first RPi had a 700 mhz single core processor and 256 mb RAM. In terms of FLOPS it was about on par with the state of the art in 1992 (the SX-3), and by the mid-late 90s was massively outclassed (even dual core home computers by this point would have outperformed RPi)

It of course ends with that being impossible- to ask it a question and actually get an answer instead of a human. In fact, I think it blows up.

Alex Trebek does not like responses like this. If you're going to be humorous, you have to do it while he's making small talk before the game begins. If you do something like this, he'll give you a death stare and make you feel about 2 inches tall. I think I've only seen contestants make him laugh a couple of times.
