I had a Data Communications teacher on Monday tell us to argue the pros and cons of a small business owner combining their voice and data provider into one. What is this, 2002?
The online computer apps class I just took for easy credit was at least 12 years old. Still used Office 2003 products and discussed floppies and zip drives as if they were still relevant.
I strongly recommend that you get an internship. Its really the best way to learn this stuff.

Honestly, if its at the basic level, if you don't already know it by the time you could get an internship, then dont try.
It's bleedingly obvious the difference in skill level between someone who studied IT and someone who just understands it. Almost impossible to compete, and if you want to spend the time to study, there are more lucrative fields.
Yeah, if you don't have the knack programming probably isn't for you.
However, if you do, an internship will familiarise you with new technologies and techniques do you go to industry knowing about things like code first and knockout instead of whatever out of date crap your professor still clings to.

Can confirm. I work for data backup company. Our cloud servers use SAS.

we still use scsi for our equipment at work. Then again, I work for the post office, and our equipment is from the late 90s, early 2000's. A lot of the shit ends up getting reused in newer hardware too as much as possible. They'll take the old PCI scsi cards and put them into a new computer, running old software. Even then, the "new" computers we all use are from the mid 2000's running windows XP.
we have ONE station that has a new (actually new) computer, and they put a stupid wide screen monitor instead of a useful 5:4 screen like the other stations. The program we use doesn't maximize, so what we're left with is a tiny as window, on a big ass monitor, that I personally almost destroyed the day we got them because it hangs off the small table the stations are on. Walked passed it and it fell onto the ground haha.
I never understood this. As many companies as I've seen, granted I'm still in my early 20's and not a professional. Companies will pinch pennies super tight in some areas and will blow budget in others without thinking or checking whether this is a good idea or not.
On a somewhat relatable note, I'm currently butcher/grinder for a burger bar. We've spent thousands on parts for a patty machine that barely works when flat out buying a new one would have been cheaper. Instead we buy a new dish washer that doesn't fit our dish pit and now we squeeze into a 3-4 room with heavy machine parts and large kitchen stuff. The old dish washer was fine, and frankly did a better job.

Our semi automatic machine (scans labels and weighs the sacks, we just apply labels) is from the late 90s-early 2000s and to upgrade it would cost 250k each (we have two) they break down constantly and drop out from the server constantly, but they wont spend the money for the upgrade kits to fix the issues. Its a HUGE productivity issue yet they dont do shit about it.
And they wonder why employees get so frustrated with equipment. I always hear from our corporate management, "why replace it if it still works?" I had to hand patty 800lbs of beef from 7 am to 12 am didn't stop to eat or anything. Told them if it's not fixed or replaced I wasn't showing up. (Not a position to easily replace someone)
My workplace only upgraded everyone to Office 2010 last year. New starters were already on '10, but the longstanding staff had 03. That training is unfortunately still kinda relevant.

My intro to comp sci class had us discuss a ton of outdated hardware and software. The professor bragged about a sweet deal he got on inkjet printers and HP desktops for the computer labs.
We had a few weeks of Ada. The professor told us that only the US government still uses Ada. It convinced me that I never want to work for the government.

Some truth right there. Digg was having a mass exodus to Reddit, slashdot was stagnating at that time period, and the format was more intuitive than Fark.
Is Fark still a thing? I used to spend what is currently Reddit time on Fark. I figured it just bowed out gracefully when Reddit came on scene. Like EHOWA.
It was probably an image thing, I cannot speak for why people personally chose it. It's cool that Kevin is chill though, I love hearing when creators are good people.

I mostly Reddit from work too, but RES is so good it is a necessity now. Oddly, when I Reddit on my phone I don't use any app or the mobile page, I just use the Desktop page on my mobile browser.
some people decided that was a good way to identify yourself to other redditors in public. like they were making a drug deal or something. reddit was a lot less mainstream and there was just some real cringe back then.

Before reddit became as popular as it is today (back in 2008-2011 or so), redditors felt like they were part of some secret club full of other special snowflake geniuses. They would become gitty when finding out someone they knew also used the site. Hell, creep shots of other people using reddit in public would make it to the front page.
Asking 'When does the narwhal bacon?' was a way to see if someone was a redditor. It's as stupid as it sounds.

It's from an ancient (in Reddit time, anyway) religious text. I hear Digg is good, or there's this new place called 9gag that's really funny. In desperate times they might even seek to drive away persistent parties by alluding to news articles about the then-ascendant /r/jailbait, referring to their beloved oasis of knowledge as a child-pornography hub in the hope of keeping the barbarians from the gates.
United by their love of their secret knowledge hoard and the inside jokes such as Narwhals being the unicorn of whales and bacon being food of the highest caliber, they faced a problem in being unable to identify true believers in the wild. As many secret societies had done before them, they adopted a secret phrase as a means of identifying themselves to one another, either in the form of a challenge: "At what time does the narwhal bacon?" (failing to consider that midnight is the obvious answer, even to the uninitiated) or simply by stating in hushed tones that "the narwhal bacons at midnight" and scanning the recipient's face for a flicker of recognition.
Such times were not to last, however, and the rage comics that they so cherished as a means of communicating common experience were ultimately their undoing. Reddit was a bastion of lively, intellectual discussion at that point. It's only recently that Reddit's demographics changed so drastically and created the juvenile cesspool you mentioned.
edit: You guys are clueless. Reddit was once great and has fallen. This guy is claiming that Reddit apparently used to be juvenile and childish, but is mature now. When, in fact, it was the opposite. The comments used to be filled with informative, quality discussion. Now, comment threads always devolve into puns, circlejerks, memes, etc.. before a discussion can even start. You know how AskReddit has a [serious] tag? Yeah...that wasn't necessary 5 years ago.
Fucking post it there, then. Anyone with more than three years on Reddit will agree with my assessment.
Not only that, but it's a well-documented observation of social media that this happens as new users join. Read about eternal September. We discussed this a lot on Reddit during Digg's collapse.

Actually, I'm glad that in uni we wrote a lot of code on paper. I think it made me more careful about it. Writing working code at the first try is very useful skill.
Had to do all my programming tests on paper including Assembly. I wrote 9 pages of assembly code on the final.

Just assumed this was Reddits response to SA's "do you have stairs in your house?". Used to be a good way to find a goon and get a nice retail discount back in the day.
Reddit just never built that kind of community. Find a redditor in the wild and they'll post something on /r/cringe about a fellow redditor asking for a discount.

No classes actually enforce these rules unless its during tests(durr) or creating a distraction. Every class Ive had so far state, "No portable electronics" and everyone has their phone on their desk.
Obviously for tests and I don't know anyone who reads reddit who causes a distraction it's not like I'm laughing out loud at comments :/
Every class I had doesn't care about those rules. The teachers still know they're going to be paid the exact same amount weather I listen or not. People who are downvoting me must be perfectly fine with being kicked because they did something the teacher didn't like out of a lecture they paid for. It's a silly concept.

Honestly, if its at the basic level, if you don't already know it by the time you could get an internship, then dont try. It's bleedingly obvious the difference in skill level between someone who studied IT and someone who just understands it. Almost impossible to compete, and if you want to spend the time to study, there are more lucrative fields.

we still use scsi for our equipment at work. Then again, I work for the post office, and our equipment is from the late 90s, early 2000's. A lot of the shit ends up getting reused in newer hardware too as much as possible. They'll take the old PCI scsi cards and put them into a new computer, running old software. Even then, the "new" computers we all use are from the mid 2000's running windows XP.
we have ONE station that has a new (actually new) computer, and they put a stupid wide screen monitor instead of a useful 5:4 screen like the other stations. The program we use doesn't maximize, so what we're left with is a tiny as window, on a big ass monitor, that I personally almost destroyed the day we got them because it hangs off the small table the stations are on. Walked passed it and it fell onto the ground haha.

I never understood this. As many companies as I've seen, granted I'm still in my early 20's and not a professional. Companies will pinch pennies super tight in some areas and will blow budget in others without thinking or checking whether this is a good idea or not.
On a somewhat relatable note, I'm currently butcher/grinder for a burger bar. We've spent thousands on parts for a patty machine that barely works when flat out buying a new one would have been cheaper. Instead we buy a new dish washer that doesn't fit our dish pit and now we squeeze into a 3-4 room with heavy machine parts and large kitchen stuff. The old dish washer was fine, and frankly did a better job.

Our semi automatic machine (scans labels and weighs the sacks, we just apply labels) is from the late 90s-early 2000s and to upgrade it would cost 250k each (we have two) they break down constantly and drop out from the server constantly, but they wont spend the money for the upgrade kits to fix the issues. Its a HUGE productivity issue yet they dont do shit about it.

Before reddit became as popular as it is today (back in 2008-2011 or so), redditors felt like they were part of some secret club full of other special snowflake geniuses. They would become gitty when finding out someone they knew also used the site. Hell, creep shots of other people using reddit in public would make it to the front page.
Asking 'When does the narwhal bacon?' was a way to see if someone was a redditor. It's as stupid as it sounds.

It became an in-joke until it fell out of favor.

When the inevitable What's Reddit? reply was levied, such disciples would post IDK, some tiny message board site, not worth spending time checking out. I hear Digg is good, or there's this new place called 9gag that's really funny. In desperate times they might even seek to drive away persistent parties by alluding to news articles about the then-ascendant /r/jailbait, referring to their beloved oasis of knowledge as a child-pornography hub in the hope of keeping the barbarians from the gates.
United by their love of their secret knowledge hoard and the inside jokes such as Narwhals being the unicorn of whales and bacon being food of the highest caliber, they faced a problem in being unable to identify true believers in the wild. As many secret societies had done before them, they adopted a secret phrase as a means of identifying themselves to one another, either in the form of a challenge: "At what time does the narwhal bacon?" (failing to consider that midnight is the obvious answer, even to the uninitiated) or simply by stating in hushed tones that "the narwhal bacons at midnight" and scanning the recipient's face for a flicker of recognition.
Such times were not to last, however, and the rage comics that they so cherished as a means of communicating common experience were ultimately their undoing. More and more slipped out into the wasteland of mediocrity outside Reddit's citadel gates, accompanied by agents of chaos posting Le Reddit army has arrived on every YouTube video to cross the frontpage. The secretkeepers' resources to combat the spread of knowledge were overwhelmed, and a new slogan: "Reddit is not a secret club" was hung in the throne room. The Way of those ancient guardians was derided and recast as "cringeworthy", and they faded into obscurity among the ever-expanding horde of Redditors.
Some say they exist still, lost in the gargantuan labyrinth that is Reddit today; shunning defaults, preferring instead to flit amongst small, private subreddits. Every class I had doesn't care about those rules. The teachers still know they're going to be paid the exact same amount weather I listen or not.
