The Jihadist want us so afraid that we won't even attempt to save their victims. Mission Accomplished. We need to stop being afraid and act like Americans.
Also, and maybe I'm giving them too much credit here, but it's also an indirect way of alienating and radicalising Muslims, they'll see it as "well if Italy was in a civil war, we'd except those refugees, so why not ones from Islamic countries?" and then it throws them into debate whether their country is White-Christian centric and if they actually belong there.
No it's pretty basic anti terrorism and anti guerrilla warfare techniques. The local populace can't view as an enemy or someone they can't turn to in the event of an emergency. All turning refugees away does is send the message that you don't see them any different from the enemy.
Denying the enemy propaganda opportunities to attract new recruits combined with a populace that is accepting of your presence and help by your mission will do more to win the fight then any amount of bombs or bullets ever will. All denying refugees, in addition to any attacks on Muslims or anyone who "doesn't look American" will do is get more people killed and allow ISIS to grow.
I'm seeing the gun fetishists claiming that their guns will make the government change their tune about the legality of refusing refugees. Never mind that these assholes are more likely to blow their nuts off or mistake their three-year-old visiting cousin for an invading terror baby, their stockpile is going to make the Feds turn the refugee boat around and send them back to what's left of Syria.

My point is that you are confusing real, valid political correctness with these crazy fringe beliefs that almost no one actually holds. Yes, you can find a few crazies that will make claims like that, but that doesn't mean that their beliefs are actually considered "politically correct" by most.
