Needs to be a longing shot of a woman being strangled and her eyes bulging out of her head too. Quentin's whole thing is people paying to watch him throttle actresses for real because "realism".
He is a weird dude. Iโd like to convince myself he isnโt because of how damn good his movies are but heโs a weird dude. Even that might be an understatement
I canโt even fuck with his movies anymore. He keeps throwing in unnecessary n words.
And Iโm not even touchy but I am black. And if I donโt draw a line when something seems kind of racist, no one else will. Pulp Fiction was cool but I donโt watch his shit anymore really.
Exactly why I hate censoring swear words. It's just visual clutter, or makes the word meaningless. I have no idea what s********** means, but sh*t only prevents me from understanding the tense in which the shitting occurred in.
i wasn't sure what was politically correct or ethically correct, or hell, even what my black uncle who i only see once a year at christmas would even feel about the matter so i just kinda went with the single on the end that made it still kind of a word but not the word. kind of in the same vein of that scene in blazing saddles, 'the sheriff is a NIGGE...!!!-bong-'. 'what did he say? THE SHERIFF IS NEAR!"
To my mind, this is the one of the worst uses of the term in a Tarantino movie. Tarantino himself isn't a great actor, and I find the line just comes out a bit forced from him. It's much better when used in something like Django Unchained.
If i wrote a 1910s heist movie with 4 white people and an asian man i can't just have the characters dropping the N word. Like sure, maybe they would say it. But the audience would also go "huh this guy really drops that word for no reason"./

Django was about slavetraders. I'm not surprised they dropped the N-word every sentence when referencing black people.
As if this is only seen in Django? His first movie Reservoir Dogs is neither set in the past nor does it have any black characters and yet the N-word is thrown around like freebies.

I found this chart of how often it's used in each of his movies, and generally the usage goes up proportionate to how relevant white/black race relations are to the film or how much of an asshole the main characters are.
It's basically completely absent in movies where neither is really true (Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds), is low to moderately used in movies where only one of these things is true (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction), and only gets egregious when you get to the westerns, where it's both true that race relations between the whites and blacks is highly relevant to the story, and the majority of the cast are massive assholes, or more specifically, slavers, former confederates, career killers, etc.
The idea that all his movies are just an N-word fest, is revisionist at best.
I didn't say all his movies were guilty of this - after all, it would be all to clear to discern his motives if he did so in something like IB or Kill Bill - however statistical data like that isn't really the best indicator. You have to see in what way the slur is used in these lines. And in movies like Pulp Fiction and especially Reservoir Dogs, it comes off as completely irrelevant and overdone. (it's a distinct possibility that it could be so because Tarantino cast himself to say such lines and his delivery was... cringe)
You're missing the whole point of the Tarantino scene in Pulp Fiction.
Having accidentally shot Marvin in the face, Jules and Vince had to go to Jimmy's (Tarantino) place as he was the closest "associate" of Jules, and knowing Jules' occupation we can assume that Jimmy isn't a law-abiding citizen. Having brought a dead body to Jimmy's place, Jules understands how bad the situation is and tells Vince to keep his cool. When the dialogue begins and Jimmy starts dropping the N-bombs, Vince begins to awkwardly sip coffee waiting for Jules' reaction. Jules lets it slide, because he needs Jimmy to let them get rid of the body, cover up their tracks and contact Marcellus. Vince catches on and doesnโt talk back to Jimmy - he talks back to Mr. Wolf, but not Jimmy. The point of the scene is that Jules, being the trigger-happy hitman that he is, allows Jimmy to speak his mind due to the circumstances, while if it was any other person they would probably be in the car crusher alongside Marvin.
rewatch kill bill or hateful8 or death proof with a critical eye to the portrayal and fetishization of violence towards women, it might surprise you. Death proof is literally a self declared homage to explotation cinema 'grindhouse'. The films it was insipired by were B movie slashers that appealed to the baser instincts of man, the results were much the same. Misogyny and violence and not much fabled 'sparkling dialogue' to justify the outing.

I love Tarantino and I love how he writes.
But yea when I rewatch Reservoir dogs and Pulp fiction i cringe a bit of how the N-word is kind of shoehorned in
Like i know its there to show these are scum bag people and probably lifted from convos he had or heard from scummy people in LA
But it was really not needed in two stellar movies
So by your account, saying the N-word casually in today's movies is also completely fine, is that what you're saying?

I'm saying its a realistic portrayal of dialogue.

Art imitates realities. No content or language is really โoff limitsโ because it all happens. But like anything thereโs each personโs opinion or take on the how they feel the author/director/writer/comedian/etc used that content or language to craft their piece. Movies and media are an evolution upon literature, and so, yes, it is okay to casually the โN-wordโ in todayโs movies. And you can decide if you are personally okay with consuming that โliteratureโ or not. And the work will do well when people find itโs just a well written and made piece. Context, natural dialogue, etc.
It is not up to us, or anyone, to artificially throttle those creative outlets through censorship. Itโs just up to the creator to make it well if he wants to get anywhere. Just as Huckleberry Fin is a well written book, arguably in part of its uncensored nature used well. Many people feel that way about directorโs/writerโs work even today, Tarantino is a good example.
I think no one here is vouching for censorship of art (I hope not!), because art by its own merits is limitless. However I think people have every right to find a director or any traits in a piece of art problematic. And when they speak up for it they're usually not trying to ban the piece of art completely but raise awareness of the fact that it is problematic. There's nothing wrong with holding artists accountable while also loving a piece of art. I love all of Charles Dickens' work but I don't blind myself from the fact that his work and his statements are heavily racist and anti-semitic.
Likewise , I don't believe people should be banned from watching 'The Birth of a Nation', rather they should watch it with the modern context to realise why it, despite being a revolutionary film, is also excessively trashy in its worldview. Likewise, I think people can love Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs despite being aware of its shortcomings.
I think we as a society have moved past that era where we ignore the hurt we cause to other communities for our own convenience and therefore I think artists should strive to be careful when touching sensitive ground. So yes, I don't think throwing the N-word casually - especially by white people - in movies today is okay as much as I don't think showing Indian Americans as barbaric savages in today's movies is okay.
Edit: Grammar
deadpxl ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:02:18 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Itโs commendable that you have a nuanced view, but current trends illustrate the opposite. In favor, instead, of editing, gaslighting, or flat out โbanningโ works of art they deem โoffensiveโ. But no ones perceived offenses should have any bearing on what works should be able to be released, spread, taught, or otherwise appreciated regardless of ones views on โmodern sensibilitiesโ.
And thatโs the main crux of what Iโm addressing, your comment merely was a catalyst to speak to it. But I always appreciate the civil debate/discussion of different viewpoints!
But if a modern writer/director only makes movies in time periods where the N word is acceptable then it's also okay to think that's weird.
Like i'll say it. I think Tarantino's use of the N word in his movies is a bit weird. I'm not a movie or Tarantino expert. But i think it's a bit weird. But that's it. Just a bit weird. I'm not saying he's racist. I'm not saying he needs to be cancelled. Not even close. Just that i've noticed that he uses the word a lot in his work and it's weird. Nothing more than that.
IMO it's okay to think something is a bit weird and not act on it.
[deleted] ยท 33 points ยท Posted at 04:27:15 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Sam Jackson says it's impossible for him to be a racist. I'll take his word for it.
Consistently? I only knew of the part he played in Pulp Fiction that he only did because the actor didnโt show up (it was written for someone else to say). What roles has he cast himself in so he could say it?
Well, put yourself in his position. Its 8:00 in the morning. He just woke up. He wasn't expecting this shit.
That's straight from the Pulp Fiction script when Jules and Marcellus are on the phone. If there was ever a time a seemingly nice guy like Jimmy (lives in the burbs, married to a nurse who's black btw) to cut a guy some slack, this would be it.
He's a weird one that's for sure. Here's an imagined scenario: he's writing dialogue for a movie that takes place in 1883 America. He goes with his gut and has some character respond to someone/thing with "th-th-that damn N***** ain't gonna get far!" Maybe he has a thought like (well, maybe I'll leave that one out for the censor guys they're always blabbin abou...wait FUCK the censor guys! And you know what? FUCK that it's stayin in! Anyways, so the bounty hunter...etc)
The fact that you you think you "can't Write" something speaks volumes about how fucking stupid you americans are. THe word is offensive in the context. SO what? it is fiction, stop acting like a fucking idiot and accept the fact that people can write offensive shit.
I thought it was clear i meant "cant write without having repercussions".
There's no reason for me to make a racist character in this movie. So the N word is not appropriate.
People can write as much offensive shit as they want. And if your characters are all racist for no reason I'm within my rights to think you've probably got an agenda.
[deleted] ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 05:28:11 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Bro. I still hear people dropping the N word. Go on xbox and some kid will call you it and say they fucked your mom.
Well he'd balance it out with plenty of "Ch**ks" and other well-researched slurs of the time period directed towards the Asian dude (or maybe he's not to be fucked with like that. maybe it's fuckin Pai Mei! I'm excited to speculate already!)
I'm white and I had family that would drop those words in, work the racism in where it's just kind of inexplicable sometimes. Some people are just super racist. Like it's baked in as part of their identity. It's like people who try to shoehorn every discussion into politics. They want to share their agitation, validate their worldview, feel superior, etc etc.
Oh sure, i'm not saying that the word couldn't actually be said. Racism always exists.
But if i'm making a 1910s heist movie where the protagonists also happen to hate black people (with it having no consequences in the plot) then people would rightly think i'm just doing this because i'm racist.
If racism is introduced as just throwaway lines or a cheap ploy to make the character more unlikeable, then yeah, I think you're basically right. If QT's treatment of racism hit you the wrong way, I think that highlights the risks of invoking it. It's not necessarily wrong, but it is an artistic risk that seems to require a lot of respect, finesse, and confidence.
On the whole, I think it fits with QT's writing style because of just how supremely confident, almost brash, his work always comes across to me as. It's got hard edges, lots of color, crazy larger-than-life characters. So it makes sense that the quiet inside things people say instead get said very loudly. With lots of pop and can't-look-away. Less like real life. More like a caricature. Maybe not suited to many other kinds of writing styles, which is I think kind of where you're coming from?

America is NOT still super racist. Racism is on life support in this country. And people with your "black people are oppressed" mindset are the only thing keeping it alive. Get off your soapbox, and open your god damn eyes.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 06:36:34 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
You know a country is racist when pointing out racism flabbergasts people. Racism did not go away. It just became more insidious and less obvious.
And the fact that you assumed it was only toward black people is case in point.
That's the thermian argument par excellence. Everything you write is the way it is, only because you chose to write it that way.
The context in which you portrait historic (or faux-historic) characters absolutely matters and Tarrantino is living proof of that.
He was playing a character. His character used the word. Thought we learned about this concept in second grade.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:38:58 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
I agree making the word archaic and just stop combining those specific syllables into that sound we'd all be better off. Don't know how we collectively accomplish that though
I've always wondered about this, and the answer clearly seems to be no. Look at Alan Tudyk in 42, he said it about a billion times but there was no backlash (for very obvious reasons).
Iโd youโre making a period piece it has to be accurate, otherwise you land yourself into revisionist history that downplay how things used to be.
Also Alan Tudyk is awesome whether heโs a space pilot, pirate, dentist, droid, or trash talking racist manager.

Not at all to be contrarian but his favorite role of mine is Tucker in Tucker & Dale vs Evil. I just canโt get over how well he does bewildered in that movie. Also just stuck with me because I watched it with NO PRETENSE and I suggest anyone else who hasnโt seen it to do the same.
i think youll find actors in movies are acting rather than expressing their personal views. hence why Leonardo DiCaprio isnt hated coz he isnt actually a slave owner.
I'm saying that "playing a character" doesn't really apply when you wrote the script. And that Tarantino is no stranger to writing scripts that allow him to play out his personal fantasies.
it definetly applies, its still a movie, even if the writer of the movie is it it doesn't make the character real, ITS A CHARACTER, how is this hard to grasp?
You're right, it doesn't make the character real. But Tarantino wouldn't have written and cast himself in those roles if he didn't want to act out the part. That includes the racist shit, as well as the public toe sucking.
Truthfully I don't know the guy so I can't say if he is or isn't racist. What I can say though is, as u/sildarion said, a lot of people will enjoy the power trip of being able to say something that would normally piss people off and instead be praised for it. He writes himself as racist characters almost as often as he writes himself sucking toes. I don't think it's a stretch to say that he writes himself in those ropes for the power trip of it.
Did you read my comment at all? I'm saying I don't know if it's racism and he probably just likes the power trip, just like he gets off on sucking actresses' toes.
People will downvote cuz they're Tarantino footsuckers and don't really get your point.
Suppose I wanted to really badly say the N-word. Openly do it and walk away without consequences. But I can't because I'm white and people will hold me accountable, cancel me.
So what do I do? I write myself into my movie as a random character who uses that word heavily. Problem solved. I get to say the N-word, I get to say that in front of millions of people (its such a power trip!) and in the end they still praise me for it.
He said that he writes characters that are bad people. And that bad people would talk that way. He's not glorifying it. None of the characters who say it are people you'd want to emulate. They're assholes.

Is any author who writes the dialogue with any swear/slur writing with the intention to say them? At what point is that creative process somehow now seen as โintentโ if itโs not in the first place? Heโs cast himself in roles very fittingly, he plays a bad/shitty/creepy guy very well, has the โlookโ, delivery is on point, and isnโt hiding behind the camera/credits for such โcontroversialโ content.
He wrote the words, asks others to say them, it could be seen as a good thing heโs willing to put up as well.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:24:09 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
he's written more than one character for himself where he says the n-word
Except he didn't. The only character he plays that says the N-word is Jimmie in Pulp Fiction, and the part wasn't written for himself. He ended up playing it because the actor who was cast missed his call.

playing a character in a film that he wrote. He literally told himself to say it
(Lets get pedantic for no reason: Old English is an entirely different language than Modern English. See Beowulf. Modern English speakers can't read it.)
That's such a shitty answer to something you have no idea about. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't but branding someone as a racist because of their art is not fair.
I know Youtube comedian Ashens made a very similar book called "50,000 shades of grey" which is just the phrase "Shades of grey." Repeated 50,000 times (with exactly one of the greys printed in the color grey rather than black) but I'm not sure about this one.
Ehh it adds to the scene. It displays what sort of guy that character is, and his casual outfit and complete lack of giving a fuck helps.

Yeah you have the reasonable take. People seem to think itโs fine in Pulp Fiction, but it comes off really poorly, especially with another almost 30 years to reflect. It weakens an otherwise stellar movie.
It weakens the movie to you? Because a guy says bad words?
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 13:32:10 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
No, it weakens the movie to me because itโs unnecessary. Sam Jackson even tried to get Tarantino to not say โdead n***r storageโ and instead Tarantino made his โwifeโ who we never see be black. As though someone married to a black woman would actually say that.
I still think Pulp Fiction is a fantastic movie. I make one critique of it and people get upset though that itโs not flawless.
personally, it just comes off as weird. Like, who thinks to say "dead n***r storage" in an argument like that? or in reservoir dogs, the wrestling scene. i kinda felt he just wanted to openly say the word in a movie under the guise of being "edgy" or because having black actors makes it ok. I mean, in context of a movie, its fine. a period piece set in america basically anytime before the 60's, it makes sense. i guess the gangter/mobsters he tried to emulate in reservoir dogs, maybe thats how they talk in real life. it sucks, but thats a reality that is portrayed in film. im ok with that. if i had a white friend that i was comfortable enough to call for help after i murdered somebody, regardless of wtf his wife is doing, and the dude, who's this close friend, has the balls to use the "hard r" insultingly, in my face, thats not my friend and we're gonna have problems. i dont know shit, but imo it just comes off as that edgy white guy that intentionally pushes the edge but can always prove he's not on the other side. at some point, it just makes you respect the outward racists because they're at least man enough to openly say/stand for what they believe even if it is bullshit.
You really think the N word just disappeared from peoples vocabulary starting after the 60s? You realize that word is still used as a slur against black people daily in 2021 right? You could have a character in a movie RIGHT NOW use the N word and itโd be believable if theyโre supposed to be an asshole.
Being a black person in America im quite aware of its usage in the present day. My point was that at a certain point in America history it was ok and commonplace to use those terms openly. Or shall o say white people didn't care that it was offensive and openly showed that in media. Watch all in the family or research Archie bunker for example, and that's after the 60s when that was on TV. I
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:33:17 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Well itโs weird when Sam Jackson didnโt want Tarantino to use it and instead Tarantino made his โwifeโ you never see be black. As though someone who has a black wife would be just saying โdead n***r storageโ for fun.
if gangster/mobster type dudes spoke like that in 1992 and tarentino was trying to emulate htat in a movie, i dont have any issue with that. it would be an accurate portrayal of real life.
I wasnโt a gangster in the early 90s so obviously I canโt say for sure, but the dialogue certainly feels authentic. Criminals arenโt known for their polite turn of phrase, and obviously the character Jimmy (played by Tarantino) has an incredibly shady past if Jules and Vincent are going to him to help hide a body.
My interpretation is that Jimmy was written to be a lot more racist than he or most white peoples like to admit and due to the intense situation itโs coming to the forefront because he canโt focus on putting up the facade. Jules wouldnโt put up with talk like that if not for the fact they needed Jimmyโs help in that moment.
Itโs very easy to read the scene as a white man taking advantage of using a slur in the presence of a black โfriendโ, Jimmy feeling like he can do whatever he wants in that moment because Jules needs his help. Itโs also interesting that the whole reason that they are in this situation is because Vincent (a white man) accidentally shot Marvin (a black man) in the face, and is just getting away with it from all parties involved.
One of the main themes of the film, for better or worse, is race relations and how the black and white characters interact with each other. Jimmy using the n-word follows the theme throughout the rest of the movie of white people taking advantage of black folk. Is it uncomfortable? Of course, but itโs one of the more intentionally in your face examples of racist characters in the movie. Weโre not suppose to like Jimmy.

i think people are misinterpreting what im saying. if its necessary for plot/character development, then sure, go for it. i get its purpose. i didnt know they were trying to intentionally or subliminally get you to not like the Jimmy character, nor the exploitation of black people in particular. in that case, using the slur has a purpose in the film. honestly, i didnt know the film had any real deeper meaning. from my pov, it seemed like unnecessary and wouldnt have affected the film if it was left unsaid, but if the creative intent was to paint a picture of Jimmy in a negative light, then i think thats different.
Yeah I hear ya. I actually wrote a paper in high school about this movie so Iโve done a bit of research, thereโs a lot of scholarly essays on the topic of race in the film if youโre interested in looking for them.
It's dialogue that fits the characters. I always thought it helped demonstrate the dire nature of Jules and Vincent's predicament. Like this white guy keeps dropping n-bombs but Jules is in such a shitty situation he can't be bothered to care. He just needs someone to help him get rid of the dead body.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:12:24 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Why would a character with a black wife be saying โdead n****r storageโ?
Good question. Maybe because some gangsters showed up at his house with a dead body and threatened his entire peaceful domestic existence...? I'm not sure that there's any more to it than that, but I suppose you could say that it shows no matter who we appear to be on the outside, there is some internalized racism buried down deep inside us that can rear it's head if you push a person past some limit. Or maybe that character was so mad at Jules for bringing a dead body to his home that he was just trying to use the most offensive/hurtful language possible just to piss him off.

Thatโs kinda how certain sections of every liberal arts field are. Theyโll hate on anything thatโs popular just because arguing a contrarian viewpoint feels novel and meaningful to them. Obviously Tarantino is an extremely good director, and criticizing him makes the author even more clever than a brilliant director.
Not criticizing the entirety of liberal arts, to be clear. But I did see this type of contrarianism pop up sometimes when getting my literature degree.
Same thing happens with any contemporaneous work thatโs popular, even stuff thatโs universally lauded in retrospect.
(Also, to be clear, there are absolutely valid criticisms of Tarantino as well, and not all criticism of him is motivated by contrarianism. Donโt take anything above as a blanket statement.)
And to be a bit contrarian, there is sometimes a really small amount of people that truly hate him. While 99% of people either are mildly dislike, neutral or like/love him.
I think sometimes people will overestimate the contrarian view because that's like a meta contrarian view.

Some people think being cult is the same as being a cunt. You can appreciate the fancy stuff and the modern guys like Tarantino. He is a fucking master on what he intends to do and some people just can't get their heads around his style. He likes fast, violent and intense movies, his dialogs are interesting and well constructed. Some classic stuff are amazing, many blockbusters are shit, but Tarantino is the best combination of both worlds. He makes good cinema, it's undeniable even for the most old fashioned film lover.
I have a few friends from the film studies dept at univerity, and whilst a lot of them are more interested in obscure indie films with a bit more artistic touch, I've yet to meet someone who dislikes Tarantino.
It's not like music, where your superstar career hangs on luck that you manage to hook a great producer who knows the formula. In film, you have to know your way around a camera, lightning, writing, and most importantly, how to covey emotions; all of which, if executed properly, makes a layman enjoy the film (there are of course exceptions to this), and Tarantino does all of these very well most of the time.
Although, it might very well be so that the students and lecturers at my university have a different outlook. What "film nerds" are you talking about? If you don't know any personally, I'll just leave this list here by the most famous film critic:
Roger Ebert:
Django unchaned, 4/4
Pulp fiction, 4/4
Kill Bill I&II, 4/4
Reservoir dogs, 2.5/4
Inglorious basterds, 4/4

Criticism for writing himself into a scene where he sucks Selma Hayek's toes is fair.
Criticism for showing feet because he likes it isn't justified imo
Tons of directors show stuff they like or they find attractive on screen. Just because it isn't the norm to like feet doesn't mean that it's worse than other directors showing sex scenes or scenes where men/women look hot.

Yeah, Iโm confused. Heโs actually gone to BLM marches and never claimed to ever be โsingle handedlyโ fighting injustice. Do you have a source where he says that? Iโm not sure a person talking about racial injustices makes them an awful person.
ap676 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:00:05 on April 25, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
As I mentioned the the commenter above, a white dude making a gorey revenge fantasy and then saying that โhe was responsible for for people in America talking about slavery in a way that they have not for 30 yearsโ is so ridiculously self important to me. It puts himself, a rich white dude, at the center of a racial justice movement that has been hard fought by numerous black men and women. Itโs not like the movie said anything novel or revolutionary about slavery - just look how bad this blatant white racism is. Slavery bad is practically the least helpful discussion about racism a movie can have imho.
The quote is from a channel 4 interview by the way if you want to google it. The whole interview ends in him telling a (non white) interviewer something to the affect that โI am not your slave and you are not my masterโ simply because he didnโt want to answer a particular question. And if that doesnโt tell you just how flippantly Tarantino feels about the actual atrocity of slavery, I donโt know what will.

What's funny to me is a lot of reddit love the Cohen Brothers but hate on Tarantino ? Like wtf ? They are both gods are their art. Just because he is a weird dude who like feet and shit, who cares ? People are fucking paying for some random onlyfans lmao. Artist are weird and Tarantino is weird, that's it. If you think his movie are bad well, I really not want to sound like a cunt but you don't like cinema.
Honestly Cohen Brothers are getting to be a more tired trope than Tarantino imo. Shocking sudden violence, woo ya got me. But by the same token I can only watch Tarantino abuse racial slurs so much before it feels like I'm watching a teenager make an edgy film to spite his parents. They both make great art but they both fall back on shock factors that feel tired after awhile.
I see your point and I agree, I should not have said ''gods'' just really good film makers, problem is i love violent movie... So i really love both Cohen and Tarantino, but i don't get why he get so much hate, Like isn't Inglorious Basterd good ? He fucking killed Hitler... What about ''Once Upon a time in Hollywood'' ? But people are still fucking stuck on Django... Even if Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson are both playing and both saying the N word and both are saying in interview that they don't give an F about that...
I mean, Django seriously does deserve critique, and it recontextualizes his other work. Itโs not just that itโs full of racial slurs, a lot of period pieces about slavery will have that. Itโs that he doesnโt juggle the tone well. Thereโs a feeling of manic glee throughout the movie, reveling in the violence to the point of comedy (remember that moment where Django shoots a woman and sheโs yeeted comically offscreen, or Leoโs scenery-chewing villain). Itโs definitely an allusion/tribute to the blaxploitation genre, where gratuitous violence and revenge was a staple. But half of the movie is framed as a serious film about a historical tragedy, and the other half is framed as a goofy, over-the-top schlock flick, and it bounces between those tones minute-by-minute. And with slavery being such a serious topic, that whiplash is alienating.
It indicates to me that Tarantino is not actually interested in making a movie about chattel slavery, he wants to make a blaxploitation movie. Then he sets it in the Antebellum South because thatโs edgy, and is the kind of setting that wins Oscars. He uses wall-to-wall racial slurs ostensibly for โhistorical accuracy,โ but honesty for shock value, to set his film apart from blockbusters who wonโt touch that language. Itโs exploitative.
The reason Inglorius Basterds works and Django doesnโt is because Inglorius Basterds isnโt set in a concentration camp. And I think itโs telling which of those historical tragedies he views as too serious to touch. To be clear, I donโt think that heโs A Racist, just that heโs disrespectful in a way that bothers me.
His other films are pretty good, but honestly Django did change the way I (and I think a lot of other people) view him as a director. Fundamentally, he makes movies about movie genres, and not about humans. His characters have never been psychologically realistic, theyโre archetypes and allusions. So the people on this thread defending his more questionable choices by saying โitโs how people talk(ed)โ rings a little hollow.
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:52:49 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
And keep in mind their opinion on the movie is just that, an opinion. They attribute most decisions to money and award seeking. This seems fairly biased and begs the question if they would feel the same way reviewing the movie without having known who had a hand in making it.
I'm also unsure, from what I can gather you still have some hardcore fans who deify him but, on the other hand, you got people waking up more and more to the fact that he's a bit of a weirdo/psycho, no matter if they like his films or not.
Heโs a weird dude. Thereโs the code switching example, where he changes his vernacular around black people (a lot more than most people would), how he uses racial slurs in scripts because heโs an artist telling a story, and of course how most of his movies went through Weinstein. A couple of things here and there about how he treated actors, but nothing huge that I recall.
Tarantino is great at what he does and all but he is also kinda questionable character. And I am not talking about feet and n-word.
For example he defended Polanski, saying him forcing 13-year old to sex wasn't rape, and knew about Weinstein's misconduct (at least some of it) but turned a blind eye to it. He also coerced Uma Thurman in Kill Bill to do stunts that she did not want to do, that then lead to long term neck injury. But he has come clean on that and acknowledges his mistake in filming it.
So, you know, being critical about him and his works is not a bad idea
If racism still exists why not show it in a movie? It's not like it's portrayed as a good thing lol. From what I've seen black people loved jango ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Yah Django is great. There is something to be said when depicting reality to of course include racism, because it exists. On the other hand thereโs movies like reservoir dogs that really donโt need the n word nor racism in them at all.
I find it the difference between showing what would exist versus tacking it on.
Who is she?!? I scanned the comments and all anyone seems to want to talk about is whether or not Tarantino gets to say the n-word. I just want to know if she's famous or not!
autoHQ ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 05:55:59 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Why does Tarantino have the pass to say it though? I just don't get it.
Sure his movies are interesting, worth a watch. But I don't think they make him a movie god or anything. He literally wrote pulp fiction and played his own character that he wrote and said the word a few times.
Why is that accepted? I watched pulp for the first time around 5 or 6 years ago and thought it was pretty odd that he never caught flack for that.
[deleted] ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 06:05:59 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
You watched it 5 years ago and noticed he said the nword a lot. I watched it 15 years ago and never even noticed it. I'm sure people who saw it when it came out were even more ambivalent.
Most of the music I listened to in the 90s dropped the n-word in just about every sentence. You get desensitized for sure.

was it necessary for him to write his own lines to say "dead N-r storage"? As he worked with Samuel Jackson's character? Is his character supposed to be racist or not? Why not just say "dead fucker storage" or something. The n word added absolutely no value to that scene other than Tarantino giving himself the pass to say it.
GDDesu ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:54:11 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Maybe because many of the characters he writes aren't exactly good people - they're murderers, gangsters, bank robbers, drug dealers, slave holders, etc... Is it so hard to believe that these lowlife characters, along with their other horrendous accolades, just might be racist, too?
autoHQ ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:39:17 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

LOL it's not Tarantino saying it; it's his character. Just like how Samuel L Jackson and Travolta aren't really gunning down people and shooting heroin! And to answer your question, i think it's safe to assume that Tarantino's character is an all around racist in PF.

I have no idea what Quentin Tarantino looks like and I didnโt read the title past that name and I didnโt look at the cover of the book and I was like wow heโs a lot younger and prettier than I thought he would be
Quentin canโt act and seeing him use the nword is cringey because of that. Iโm glad he tried it out though, humbled him to the art of acting and probably made him a more understanding director.
Yeah he put himself out there and he must have gave it his best shot in that vampire movie, he did a much better job at acting than the average person would have done. Itโs admirable. But itโs still bad. In a bad movie maybe it would be acceptable, like a Hallmark channel soap maybe, but Quentin doesnโt make bad movies. His bad acting sticks out like a sore thumb because his movies are not at all bad.

This book actually seems like it would be a philosophical piece; a true and unrefined look into the continuous and futile cycle we go through time and time again. How us humans can project ourselves into something shallow and empty, to give it a deep and profound meaning.
It's almost symbolic to how we place meaning and feelings into things as simple as sound waves or glyphs on a page made from our own flora. We truly are peculiar in every way, and this fictional piece of media within another piece of media in a center of socialization, within a technological marvel that unites almost our entire species, proves it so effectively that art must imitate life.

White person: โIf I buy this book and is the type of reader who needs to read out loud. Can I read this on the L train through the south side of Chicago?โ
If I ever became a public figure, political or entertainment, I'd avoid his movies like the plague. I could not get the n-word out of my head for at least 2 weeks after watching Django Unchained.

To my mind, this is the one of the worst uses of the term in a Tarantino movie. Tarantino himself isn't a great actor, and I find the line just comes out a bit forced from him. It's much better when used in something like Django Unchained.
Still, it did result in the best YouTube video ever.

i think that's a bit far.
People choose what they write.
If i wrote a 1910s heist movie with 4 white people and an asian man i can't just have the characters dropping the N word. Like sure, maybe they would say it. But the audience would also go "huh this guy really drops that word for no reason"./

Django was about slavetraders. I'm not surprised they dropped the N-word every sentence when referencing black people.
sildarion ยท 33 points ยท Posted at 04:55:49 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

The idea that all his movies are just an N-word fest, is revisionist at best.
sildarion ยท -9 points ยท Posted at 05:39:47 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
I didn't say all his movies were guilty of this - after all, it would be all to clear to discern his motives if he did so in something like IB or Kill Bill - however statistical data like that isn't really the best indicator. You have to see in what way the slur is used in these lines. And in movies like Pulp Fiction and especially Reservoir Dogs, it comes off as completely irrelevant and overdone. (it's a distinct possibility that it could be so because Tarantino cast himself to say such lines and his delivery was... cringe)
mfdoomguy ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 10:03:33 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

But yea when I rewatch Reservoir dogs and Pulp fiction i cringe a bit of how the N-word is kind of shoehorned in

But it was really not needed in two stellar movies

deadpxl ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 06:06:54 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Many people feel that way about directorโs/writerโs work even today, Tarantino is a good example.
sildarion ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 06:24:16 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)*

Sure.
If it makes sense then it makes sense.

That's straight from the Pulp Fiction script when Jules and Marcellus are on the phone. If there was ever a time a seemingly nice guy like Jimmy (lives in the burbs, married to a nurse who's black btw) to cut a guy some slack, this would be it.

I thought it was clear i meant "cant write without having repercussions".
There's no reason for me to make a racist character in this movie. So the N word is not appropriate.
People can write as much offensive shit as they want. And if your characters are all racist for no reason I'm within my rights to think you've probably got an agenda.

I'm white and I had family that would drop those words in, work the racism in where it's just kind of inexplicable sometimes. Some people are just super racist. Like it's baked in as part of their identity. It's like people who try to shoehorn every discussion into politics. They want to share their agitation, validate their worldview, feel superior, etc etc.
greg19735 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:14:17 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Oh sure, i'm not saying that the word couldn't actually be said. Racism always exists.
But if i'm making a 1910s heist movie where the protagonists also happen to hate black people (with it having no consequences in the plot) then people would rightly think i'm just doing this because i'm racist.
agnostic_science ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:28:03 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

That's the thermian argument par excellence. Everything you write is the way it is, only because you chose to write it that way.
The context in which you portrait historic (or faux-historic) characters absolutely matters and Tarrantino is living proof of that.

EvilOneWhichSobs ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:41:00 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

SFW_HARD_AT_WORK ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 07:33:31 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
personally, it just comes off as weird.
Moofooist765 ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 10:13:03 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
You really think the N word just disappeared from peoples vocabulary starting after the 60s? You realize that word is still used as a slur against black people daily in 2021 right? You could have a character in a movie RIGHT NOW use the N word and itโd be believable if theyโre supposed to be an asshole.
SFW_HARD_AT_WORK ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 11:33:53 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:33:17 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

if gangster/mobster type dudes spoke like that in 1992 and tarentino was trying to emulate htat in a movie, i dont have any issue with that. it would be an accurate portrayal of real life.
MilkMan0096 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:44:41 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
SFW_HARD_AT_WORK ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:04:37 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
i think people are misinterpreting what im saying. if its necessary for plot/character development, then sure, go for it. i get its purpose. i didnt know they were trying to intentionally or subliminally get you to not like the Jimmy character, nor the exploitation of black people in particular. in that case, using the slur has a purpose in the film. honestly, i didnt know the film had any real deeper meaning. from my pov, it seemed like unnecessary and wouldnt have affected the film if it was left unsaid, but if the creative intent was to paint a picture of Jimmy in a negative light, then i think thats different.
MilkMan0096 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:20:32 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah I hear ya. I actually wrote a paper in high school about this movie so Iโve done a bit of research, thereโs a lot of scholarly essays on the topic of race in the film if youโre interested in looking for them.
notsureif1should ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 07:07:47 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Why would a character with a black wife be saying โdead n****r storageโ?
notsureif1should ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:43:27 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Donโt take anything above as a blanket statement.)
greg19735 ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 04:21:22 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Tetiigondaedingdong ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 07:53:23 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

I'm not pointing the finger, but there are enough people that don't like him and consider themselves film nerds that it's a known phenomenon.
I think a lot of people really don't like his dialog style or content. I pay zero attention to film critics, professional or amateur

I mean, I hate him. He is an asshole, who thinks he is single handedly fighting injustice when in reality he is just using other peoples suffering as set pieces for revenge fantasy.
Donโt get me wrong, I like a few of his films. But the dude himself is awful.
Arntown ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:57:55 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
What are you even talking about? What injustice does he think he is single-handedly fighting?
ap676 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:45:45 on April 25, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
He said that he (and his film Django) was โresponsible for people in America talking about slavery in way that they have not for 30 years.โ Like yeah sure...
doc_birdman ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:46:29 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

FamilyStyle2505 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:28:33 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Animagus30 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 05:19:50 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
I see your point and I agree, I should not have said ''gods'' just really good film makers, problem is i love violent movie... So i really love both Cohen and Tarantino, but i don't get why he get so much hate, Like isn't Inglorious Basterd good ? He fucking killed Hitler... What about ''Once Upon a time in Hollywood'' ? But people are still fucking stuck on Django... Even if Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson are both playing and both saying the N word and both are saying in interview that they don't give an F about that...
lawsofrobotics ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 12:59:37 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)*

And keep in mind their opinion on the movie is just that, an opinion. They attribute most decisions to money and award seeking. This seems fairly biased and begs the question if they would feel the same way reviewing the movie without having known who had a hand in making it.

TavrinCallas_ ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:43:52 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)
Overlorde159 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:31:25 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

Yah Django is great. There is something to be said when depicting reality to of course include racism, because it exists. On the other hand thereโs movies like reservoir dogs that really donโt need the n word nor racism in them at all. I find it the difference between showing what would exist versus tacking it on.

[deleted] ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 06:05:59 on April 13, 2021 ยท (Permalink)

was it necessary for him to write his own lines to say "dead N-r storage"?

Fascinating.
