I know exactly one person with a legitimate diagnosis and his dissociation manifests in situations of extreme abuse. There is no characters with different names, or communication between "Alters". One minute he'll be fine and the next he'll be triggered and he'll zone out in order to protect himself.
Meh. Depends on the type of dissociative disorder they have. People will true DID will have clearly defined alters but those alters will also fall into specific roles (such as little, protector, caregiver, things like that) and they do usually name themselves (but theyโre normal names). And after years and years of therapy communication can be achieved between alters. But like no teenager with actual DID will be at that point unless they started therapy for it at a really young age which is highly unlikely.
Source- a lot of personal study into it while trying to figure out if this girl in my high school psychology class was faking it (she was lol). Also Anthony Padilla interviewed people with DID and the video was pretty good and informative
Edit: youโre friend probably has a dissociative disorder but not full on DID. Dissociative disorders can be more common and less severe than DID. They mainly feature the spacing out as a reaction to trauma or stress
