It's still illegal in most states. In Georgia, the age of consent is 18 across the board, but there's a "Romeo and Juliet" exception if both people are 16 or older and within a few years of age (can't remember the exact amount). But that doesn't get you off the hook, it just lessens the sentence.

In Canada, a 12-13 year old is allowed to have sex with anyone older than them by less than 2 years. 14-15 year olds are allowed to have sex with anyone older than them by less than 5 years. And the age of consent is 16 unless the other person is in a position of power or responsibility for the younger individual, then the legal age rises to 18.
We have some very outdated laws here. Anal or oral sex is still illegal, even between two consenting heterosexual adults.
Now there's virtually no chance of this ever being enforced, and even if you were charged, the supreme court ruled that such laws were unconstitutional.

Barely a blip? It was world news mate. And although he might be telling the truth, he hardly has any credibility from it. It's a literal he-said-she-said with these allegations. But, they're causing others to come forward. With Weinstein, there was so many people that followed and came forward about him after. With Mariah, there's literally just the one allegation.
An allegation is circumstantial evidence. It's not until circumstantial evidence piles up that a case can be made. I know I'm talking like a lawyer, but unfortunately this is the only way we will know without a confession or hard evidence.
I hope if it's true, it gets dealt with properly. But he's accusing her of so many things, and it's an all of a sudden thing. It raises doubts that only more allegations can destroy.

He got fined and police found out he was dating my girlfriends friend. Police question her loads because she had a 6 year old daughter. Her ex found out and used it as leverage to get her child taken away from her.

The law always takes a long time to catch up with technology. Here, the law needs tweaking because it was most certainly not meant to lock up a 16 year old who sends a picture to her 16 year old boyfriend. Iโm not sure the drafters of the original statute could have foreseen that teenagers would all be carrying around phones with cameras, thus making it a lot easier to take and send nude pictures.

I have a friend who went through a scandal like that in 8th grade where she shared nude photos with one other boy and he ended up distributing them throughout the entire school. Even though it's technically child porn, all of the parents were given the option to press charges against her but none of them did, so she was never actually prosecuted for it
It's clear the only people who cared were the school officials which tells you something. If that were my kid's school I'd lobby to have them all replaced.
Actually I'd be willing to bet that only the police/DA who cared. I think the school would be legally obligated to notify the local authorities of something like that.

Same thing happened just last year at my high school when I was in 11th grade. Foreign exchange student had sex with a guy and then distributed the email over the school email. Everyone knew about it and the kids were a sophomore and another junior but no one gave a shit

Depends. There have been cases where a teenage girl sent her bf nudes, and the girl's parents found out, got pissed at the bf and decided to press charges. Poor kid ended up on the child sex offender registry.

It may depend on the state, but at least in Kentucky, yes. However, you will not be charged with sexual offense until you turn 18 and are still in possession of those photos.
There's not a lot of reasons to forbid a 16yo to have sex. As long as it's consensual, there's nothing wrong with two teenagers exploring sexuality.
Child pornography on the other hand is an entirely different beast, with a lot more things that can go wrong. There's plenty of reason to make that completely 100% illegal, no matter if the subject is consentent or not.
The problem is what happens to the picture you take?
Personally I don't have any moral issues with a teenager taking nude selfie of themselves. There's nothing wrong with that. But what happens afterwards is where it can go wrong.
What if the teenager starts sharing that picture around? Distributing child pornography is totally illegal, and for good reasons. Doesn't matter if a 16 year old girl want to expose herself on the internet, it shouldn't be allowed, because it fuels the child pornography industry. And that I have a moral issue with.
Even sharing such a picture with only one person is a huge risk. Revenge porn exists, and I'm not okay with that.
And what if the teenager doesn't share that picture around but she gets hacked/phone stolen/whatever? It happens often. Remember the fappening? Storing pictures of child pornography, even if it's pictures of yourself, creates a lot of risks that those pictures will end up in the hands of pedophiles.
And even if the teenager in question is totally fine and consenting with sharing pictures of themselves online, there's a reason age of consent and statutory rape exists. And that's because kids don't always understand the consequence of their actions.
I'm not saying the way the law currently works is perfect, if anything I think laws shouldn't be universal. Kids who take pictures of themselves shouldn't face the same charges than adults creating child pornography. But I still don't think it should be allowed.
So lets say a 16 year old sends her bf a nude picture. Who is the victim of this "crime"?
If her bf decides to share it with others, or put it online as revenge porn, he should be charged with distribution. But if its just an exchange between two mutual consenting parties, no one should be charged and put on the sex registry.
What is the potential danger in this scenario? Who is the potential victim? With things like speeding, there is a potential to kill or harm others. And there is also a large difference between speeding (a fine) and child pornography distribution(jail time).
Revenge porn is one thing, that is a separate law. And it isn't illegal for anyone to send nudes, only minors. Revenge porn can be uploaded by people of any age. So by that logic it should be illegal for anyone to send nudes.

The entire point of criminalizing child pornography - from production, to possession, to distribution - is to keep children from being exploited and harmed. Prosecuting and punishing a child for "exploiting itself" contradicts the idea behind those laws.
All the cases you named require a third person to commit a crime (or several), before the mere existence of the material becomes an ethical problem.

Well, I think that's exactly what the law does. If a kid is allowed to take naked pictures of themselves, it would be much easier for child pornographers to entice them to share those pictures willingly. Offer them money for their pictures, or make false promises that you won't ever share them around etc... Sure the crime is on the child pornographer, and not on the kid who took the selfie, and like I said I don't think it's an ethical problem to take naked pictures of yourself. But doing so increases the chance that your pictures will be used to exploit and harm you.
I wish we could live in a world where we could take naked selfie and never be afraid of where they'll end up, but that's not really the case. And I wish there would be a better way to prevent naked pictures from going all over the place without forbidding teenagers to take pictures of themselves. But I don't really see another solution.

Prostitution is a good example. In theory I don't have anything against prostitution, on the condition that the prostitute does it willingly. In practice, there are pimps, there are people forced into prostitution because they have no other choice to make money, they often take risks (lack of protection because the clients demand it) etc... As far as I know, prostitutes who actually chose and enjoy their job are pretty rare. So I'm mostly not okay with prostitution. Escort girls are closer to something I'm okay with. At least in theory, because I have honestly no idea how much control escort girls have in the real world.

"Angry" would be a bit of strong word. I'm rarely angry about anything. I'd rather say that I would prefer a situation where people aren't exploited. However it leads to what I think are some pretty important questions, and kind of the heart of the problem: how do you define exploitation? If you're stuck in a job that you hate because there are no other job for you, is that exploitation? If you choose to follow a path of academic study where there are a lot of job in the market, instead of one you would truly enjoy, is that exploitation?
Basically, how much of a choice in any given situation do we have? It's easy to say "if you don't like your job, quit", or "don't go into studies you don't enjoy, follow your dreams instead", but is that really feasible in every situations?

I honestly can't. At least not on such a broad level. I think each situations is unique, and my opinion is merely my own, not a definite objective assessment of exploitation or fair trade. What I think is exploitation might be seen as a totally fair trade by someone else, and vice-versa. I also think that morals are not always applicable. We live in the real world, we don't control everything, and sometimes we don't have a choice but to accept some things.
If we take the prostitution example, I'm not okay with women or men being forced into prostitution (whether by a pimp or a disastrous financial situation or whatever else). It doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. But the fact that I accept that it exists doesn't change my morals about it.

That's more my line of thinking. I believe there are certain things that everyone is owed. You have the basic constitution stuff, like freedom of speech, freedom of religion etc... but I think men and women should have much more. A good example of what I hope to see in my lifetime would be basic income. A way for people to be able to live their life without being afraid of not being able to pay for education, healthcare, housing, food etc... without resorting to options like prostitution, theft etc...
However, I would be okay if some people would voluntarily trade whatever they want. As long as it's their choice. But like I said above, it's hard to really determine how much of a choice people have in some situations, and it's easy to disguise a forced trade into a free choice.

Broadly, to protect other interests that depend on children not having sex. These interests and their relevancy depend on the society in question, the age differences and maturity of those involved, the power dynamic between those involved, and whatever else anyone could think of. In my opinion, the age of consent exists to protect a traditionally European idea of childhood "innocence," where children are closer to Nature, can see the essential truth of things, and are blithely happy and ignorant of political matters. Think of Melville's Billy Budd, of primitive savages, of the characters from The Chronicles of Narnia, of the slave child in Plato's Meno, and so on. People labeled as such can show affection towards and learn from others outside that group, like in education or towards family, but not engage in overt sex with them. From what I have experienced, the age of consent exists to preserve that idea. I find that acts in defiance of this concept (pornography, prostitution, statutory rape, youth rights, yadda yadda) provides a sort of morale boost, a feeling that one can bend the mores of society still further. That's probably just general defiance though, nothing specific to this idea.

It's more like the spleen of the problem or something. As for how I define exploitation... I wrote my working definition in the quote you put down. People don't get paid what they feel is owed for whatever goods or services they provided. Upon further reflection, that definition is very inadequate. I want to say that exploitation is an assymetry of costs and benefits in some power structure, but that's also wholly dependent on what costs and benefits are recognized and valued by various members of that structure. For instance, the examples you gave about the job market would be a cost by the worker or scholar that is seen as unjust or non-optimal, but the personal benefits are either deferred (in the case of the scholar) or too low (in the case of the worker). Employers or the university would benefit immediately, either in labor or money/social prestige. As for how much choice we have in any given situation... That's hard for me to decide on, as I don't have total information on any specific situation. Any choice I make regarding a situation could be changed with additional data, or if some data is shown to be false. I cannot solve this in any particular, and I cannot understand it in the general case. Maybe if I took some classes in computational complexity theory and abstract algebra (or something involving infinite ordinals and cardinals) to understand this data structure, but alas, I haven't. This sounds undecidable anyways. ...Basically, I agree that thinking about this "on such a broad level" is too hard.

Hoo boy... Constitutional freedom of speech and religion isn't a universal thing, nor is it basic. Those rights only apply to that specific government towards its constituents, not towards private organizations or families or something else. The U.N. might work internationally, but it still won't interfere with private affairs. Education is mostly a European export by now, with lecturers and a group of students instead of villages teaching kids. I disagree. There are plenty of chemicals or other dangerous products that you're not allowed to legally own. Sometimes it's completely illegal, sometimes it requires a hard-to-get license, high-end secured storage etc...
The reason those things are illegal is because they pose a risk. Not because it is a crime by itself to own those chemicals, because you're not hurting anybody by owning those chemicals. But owning those chemicals poses a great risk to you and others for many reasons (danger of a spill, a theft, or the risk that you make a bomb with it or whatever).
Taking a naked selfie also poses a risk, mainly to yourself. Simply because if that picture gets out, it can deal a lot of damage to your life. Revenge porn has led to suicide before, but that's just a worse case scenario, it can do a lot of other damage.
Laws exists to protect you and others from negative consequences, even if it's caused by your own actions.

The chemical analogy breaks down because we are not talking about a victimless crime, even if those victims are only potential victims.

Eh, most people don't know laws at all. For example, in my state, the age of consent is 16, so at that point you can fuck and 85 year old and it's legal (minus something like teacher/priest), but be 20 and show interest in a 17 yr old and you get called a pedo.
Then how do you feel about the fact that in most of Europe it's 15 in average and there is no Romeo and Juliet law as well (at least from what I hear)? So no maximum age of the other partner unless it was not 100% consensual and in a position of authority

Age of consent is 14 in Germany. I know how I feel about that - it's too young and should probably be changed in for most cases. But obviously different societies and jurisdictions have come to different conclusions.
I think both psychology and our own society, wherein people are dependent on their parents on not full-fledged decision makers usually well past 18, suggest the laws should generally endeavor to protect people under 18 at least.
People who argue for younger ages of consent in all circumstances talk about how it's not traumatizing or exploitative, but (1) sometimes it is and (2) the actual nature of modern society matters.

As far as I can tell pretty much everyone has decided to make 18 the age for porn to be legal. It used to be lower in some countries (like 16 in Australia), but since it's viewed worldwide the US decided to intervene and pretty much forced those countries to up the age to 18.

It's kind of sensible to have the age of consent be lower for girls since girls go through puberty before boys, if we're talking about sexual maturity. No idea about mental maturity though, plus age of consent is mostly cultural and relatively arbitrary so it makes more sense for it to be the same age for men and women - definitely weird to see a country that bases it purely on biology.
This is the thing that keeps me thinking, and I know this is controversial, but I just don't fully understand it.
This whole age of consent thing, though I understand the point of it, more or less, is a really arbitrary thing.
There might be a 16 year old, that is mature enough to actually know enough to properly decide, just as there might be an immature 36 year old that might not be able to properly decide for themselves.
The thing is, there is no age that shows whether we are fully prepared to be the lone holder of full responsibility of ourselves and our decissions. People are constantly learning, and mostly learning from mistakes. If you can make mistakes early (touching hot plates hurts), you know early that this is bad. If you can't make mistakes early (giving consent to being intimate with someone might end up being bad) you artificially delay the natural learning process to an arbitrary age.
In the end, statistics show that the age of consent is being ignored, although I remember seeing that it has a big factor in the US apart from the EU as the statutory rape laws are pretty strict and unforgiving, but if these are no factors, kids and teens usually decide for themselves anyway, disregarding current laws.
It is mostly only a way to protect kids from ... "predators" ... until the actual age, from when on those kids (or adults as we arbitrarily call them then) are not longer protected from those same "predators".
So... do I forget something important, or is this really just arbitrary and weird?

Yeah, it's all pretty bizarre. People mature at different rates both mentally and physically. The age of consent does a decent job at estimating when most people are sexually mature - while many people are sexually mature before the age of consent, better safe than sorry. But mental maturity has way more variance, and we all have different caps too - some people will just never reach the same mental maturity as someone else. Usually it's correlated with age, but I've seen plenty of 30+ year olds with the mentality of 14 year olds - should they be allowed to have sex? Again, it's about just picking an age where we feel most people have matured sufficiently, but there's too much variance for it to really be meaningful.
But who knows - I'm not a lawyer nor a scientist, so maybe I'm way off on this. I certainly don't have any better solution to the issue of consent that wouldn't cause issues of its own.
Thanks, that is a simple answer that is satisfiable enough for me. We have no idea so we have a shot in the dark where we assume most people be ready by then.

FYI it isn't a crime in Canada, as long as your are 13 - 15. Their law allows sexual relations between minors as long as the minors are less than 2 years apart.
If it's not a crime then what is the premise of sting operations? The guys arrested in those merely "attempted" it but are convicted of more than contributing to delinquency and have to register as sex offenders.

It's still illegal in most states. In Georgia, the age of consent is 18 across the board, but there's a "Romeo and Juliet" exception if both people are 16 or older and within a few years of age (can't remember the exact amount). But that doesn't get you off the hook, it just lessens the sentence.

In Canada, a 12-13 year old is allowed to have sex with anyone older than them by less than 2 years. 14-15 year olds are allowed to have sex with anyone older than them by less than 5 years. And the age of consent is 16 unless the other person is in a position of power or responsibility for the younger individual, then the legal age rises to 18.

We have some very outdated laws here. Anal or oral sex is still illegal, even between two consenting heterosexual adults.
Now there's virtually no chance of this ever being enforced, and even if you were charged, the supreme court ruled that such laws were unconstitutional.

Barely a blip? It was world news mate. And although he might be telling the truth, he hardly has any credibility from it. It's a literal he-said-she-said with these allegations. But, they're causing others to come forward. With Weinstein, there was so many people that followed and came forward about him after. With Mariah, there's literally just the one allegation.
An allegation is circumstantial evidence. It's not until circumstantial evidence piles up that a case can be made. I know I'm talking like a lawyer, but unfortunately this is the only way we will know without a confession or hard evidence.
I hope if it's true, it gets dealt with properly. But he's accusing her of so many things, and it's an all of a sudden thing. It raises doubts that only more allegations can destroy.
Any other women that have allegations against them? I don't know them if so, and would like to. It might just be I've never seen them, but I need to know about them.

The law always takes a long time to catch up with technology. Here, the law needs tweaking because it was most certainly not meant to lock up a 16 year old who sends a picture to her 16 year old boyfriend. Iโm not sure the drafters of the original statute could have foreseen that teenagers would all be carrying around phones with cameras, thus making it a lot easier to take and send nude pictures.

I have a friend who went through a scandal like that in 8th grade where she shared nude photos with one other boy and he ended up distributing them throughout the entire school. Even though it's technically child porn, all of the parents were given the option to press charges against her but none of them did, so she was never actually prosecuted for it

The problem is what happens to the picture you take?
Personally I don't have any moral issues with a teenager taking nude selfie of themselves. There's nothing wrong with that. But what happens afterwards is where it can go wrong.
What if the teenager starts sharing that picture around? Distributing child pornography is totally illegal, and for good reasons. Doesn't matter if a 16 year old girl want to expose herself on the internet, it shouldn't be allowed, because it fuels the child pornography industry. And that I have a moral issue with.
Even sharing such a picture with only one person is a huge risk. Revenge porn exists, and I'm not okay with that.
And what if the teenager doesn't share that picture around but she gets hacked/phone stolen/whatever? It happens often. Remember the fappening? Storing pictures of child pornography, even if it's pictures of yourself, creates a lot of risks that those pictures will end up in the hands of pedophiles.
And even if the teenager in question is totally fine and consenting with sharing pictures of themselves online, there's a reason age of consent and statutory rape exists. And that's because kids don't always understand the consequence of their actions.
I'm not saying the way the law currently works is perfect, if anything I think laws shouldn't be universal. Kids who take pictures of themselves shouldn't face the same charges than adults creating child pornography. But I still don't think it should be allowed.

The entire point of criminalizing child pornography - from production, to possession, to distribution - is to keep children from being exploited and harmed. Prosecuting and punishing a child for "exploiting itself" contradicts the idea behind those laws.
All the cases you named require a third person to commit a crime (or several), before the mere existence of the material becomes an ethical problem.

Well, I think that's exactly what the law does. If a kid is allowed to take naked pictures of themselves, it would be much easier for child pornographers to entice them to share those pictures willingly. Offer them money for their pictures, or make false promises that you won't ever share them around etc... Sure the crime is on the child pornographer, and not on the kid who took the selfie, and like I said I don't think it's an ethical problem to take naked pictures of yourself. But doing so increases the chance that your pictures will be used to exploit and harm you.
I wish we could live in a world where we could take naked selfie and never be afraid of where they'll end up, but that's not really the case. And I wish there would be a better way to prevent naked pictures from going all over the place without forbidding teenagers to take pictures of themselves. But I don't really see another solution.

By that reasoning, I assume you are also against prostitution as a consequence of a lack of control over oneโs body, like due to a lack of finances or exploitative caretakers. If I were to generalize this assumption, I would say that your morals would be angry at situations where people are exploited in general. By exploitation, I mean that people receive payment that isnโt proportionate to the goods and services that were given. Are any of these assumptions false, or too general?
If not, what do you think of travel literature, where a foreign place is condensed and rewritten to meet the expectations of tourists? Like with Akihabara, Japan, which was shaped by the exports of that countryโs animation. Or Native American reservations, the last sad remnants of a native population corralled into places far removed from their original land. Or memorials as a collective, where living people gather to express their feelings towards people from the past. Or diasporas of people, from Jews to Africans to people from Myanmar to internet denizens if net neutrality falls through. All of these people have been or can be affected by larger phenomena at human scales, independently of their will. Can you help me understand where exploitation ends, and fair trade begins? Or perhaps some things shouldnโt be traded, like oneโs livelihood or the future of their family. I would like to read about your thoughts on that.

Ok here I go. Keep in mind that this is just my first thoughts, I haven't really taken the time to think a lot about all of this, and it only reflects my current views and opinions, which might change in the future.
Just want to ask, what would be the most important reason for the existence of age of consent for you?
Prostitution is a good example. In theory I don't have anything against prostitution, on the condition that the prostitute does it willingly. In practice, there are pimps, there are people forced into prostitution because they have no other choice to make money, they often take risks (lack of protection because the clients demand it) etc... As far as I know, prostitutes who actually chose and enjoy their job are pretty rare. So I'm mostly not okay with prostitution. Escort girls are closer to something I'm okay with. At least in theory, because I have honestly no idea how much control escort girls have in the real world.
"Angry" would be a bit of strong word. I'm rarely angry about anything. I'd rather say that I would prefer a situation where people aren't exploited. However it leads to what I think are some pretty important questions, and kind of the heart of the problem: how do you define exploitation? If you're stuck in a job that you hate because there are no other job for you, is that exploitation? If you choose to follow a path of academic study where there are a lot of job in the market, instead of one you would truly enjoy, is that exploitation?
Basically, how much of a choice in any given situation do we have? It's easy to say "if you don't like your job, quit", or "don't go into studies you don't enjoy, follow your dreams instead", but is that really feasible in every situations?
I honestly don't have an answer to those questions, and I think there are tons of variables that can change from one situation to another. I'm partial to say that we always have a choice, but I think the world is much more complicated than that.
I honestly can't. At least not on such a broad level. I think each situations is unique, and my opinion is merely my own, not a definite objective assessment of exploitation or fair trade. What I think is exploitation might be seen as a totally fair trade by someone else, and vice-versa. I also think that morals are not always applicable. We live in the real world, we don't control everything, and sometimes we don't have a choice but to accept some things.
If we take the prostitution example, I'm not okay with women or men being forced into prostitution (whether by a pimp or a disastrous financial situation or whatever else). It doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. But the fact that I accept that it exists doesn't change my morals about it.
That's more my line of thinking. I believe there are certain things that everyone is owed. You have the basic constitution stuff, like freedom of speech, freedom of religion etc... but I think men and women should have much more. A good example of what I hope to see in my lifetime would be basic income. A way for people to be able to live their life without being afraid of not being able to pay for education, healthcare, housing, food etc... without resorting to options like prostitution, theft etc...
However, I would be okay if some people would voluntarily trade whatever they want. As long as it's their choice. But like I said above, it's hard to really determine how much of a choice people have in some situations, and it's easy to disguise a forced trade into a free choice.

Broadly, to protect other interests that depend on children not having sex. These interests and their relevancy depend on the society in question, the age differences and maturity of those involved, the power dynamic between those involved, and whatever else anyone could think of. In my opinion, the age of consent exists to protect a traditionally European idea of childhood "innocence," where children are closer to Nature, can see the essential truth of things, and are blithely happy and ignorant of political matters. Think of Melville's Billy Budd, of primitive savages, of the characters from The Chronicles of Narnia, of the slave child in Plato's Meno, and so on. People labeled as such can show affection towards and learn from others outside that group, like in education or towards family, but not engage in overt sex with them. From what I have experienced, the age of consent exists to preserve that idea. I find that acts in defiance of this concept (pornography, prostitution, statutory rape, youth rights, yadda yadda) provides a sort of morale boost, a feeling that one can bend the mores of society still further. That's probably just general defiance though, nothing specific to this idea.

The word "angry" was a bad choice, I apologize for that. Although "the heart of the problem" is a bad choice too, since settling that question probably won't end any debates. It's more like the spleen of the problem or something. As for how I define exploitation... I wrote my working definition in the quote you put down. People don't get paid what they feel is owed for whatever goods or services they provided. Upon further reflection, that definition is very inadequate. I want to say that exploitation is an assymetry of costs and benefits in some power structure, but that's also wholly dependent on what costs and benefits are recognized and valued by various members of that structure. For instance, the examples you gave about the job market would be a cost by the worker or scholar that is seen as unjust or non-optimal, but the personal benefits are either deferred (in the case of the scholar) or too low (in the case of the worker). Employers or the university would benefit immediately, either in labor or money/social prestige. As for how much choice we have in any given situation... That's hard for me to decide on, as I don't have total information on any specific situation. Any choice I make regarding a situation could be changed with additional data, or if some data is shown to be false. I cannot solve this in any particular, and I cannot understand it in the general case. Maybe if I took some classes in computational complexity theory and abstract algebra (or something involving infinite ordinals and cardinals) to understand this data structure, but alas, I haven't. This sounds undecidable anyways. ...Basically, I agree that thinking about this "on such a broad level" is too hard.
I was hoping for your own opinion, since I couldn't reasonably expect you to be an authority on this topic. I think I understand your idea of morals and personal agency in practice. I don't know if you consider the "don't have a choice but to accept some things" part to be exploitation, though. Perhaps the outcome of some of those "choices" goes against your morals, but I don't know if that's necessarily exploitation, from your perspective.
Hoo boy... Constitutional freedom of speech and religion isn't a universal thing, nor is it basic. Those rights only apply to that specific government towards its constituents, not towards private organizations or families or something else. The U.N. might work internationally, but it still won't interfere with private affairs. And the very definition of a human was under contest with slavery in the U.S., and still is if places like Libya are any indication. Education is mostly a European export by now, with lecturers and a group of students instead of villages teaching kids. The material can be pretty European too, with science and philosophy and all that. Basic income... has a lot of problems going for it, right now. Someone has to convert that income to desired goods and services, so someone needs to work despite that basic income, making that income unable to guarantee goods and services through it alone. So basic income can't be a thing as long as people need to consciously facilitate its trade, at the very least.
So as long as it's their choice and all parties involved are voluntarily doing so, trade would be ok. Determining and ensuring free choice is a problem for others to figure out. Then again, there are times when a person wants to force a choice out of others as a show of power or something, which necessarily defeats free choice whether that person is accepted or rebuffed. ...Forget this sophistry, back to playing Ultra Moon. I disagree. There are plenty of chemicals or other dangerous products that you're not allowed to legally own. Sometimes it's completely illegal, sometimes it requires a hard-to-get license, high-end secured storage etc...
The reason those things are illegal is because they pose a risk. Not because it is a crime by itself to own those chemicals, because you're not hurting anybody by owning those chemicals. But owning those chemicals poses a great risk to you and others for many reasons (danger of a spill, a theft, or the risk that you make a bomb with it or whatever).
Taking a naked selfie also poses a risk, mainly to yourself. Simply because if that picture gets out, it can deal a lot of damage to your life. Revenge porn has led to suicide before, but that's just a worse case scenario, it can do a lot of other damage.
Laws exists to protect you and others from negative consequences, even if it's caused by your own actions.

Age of consent is 14 in Germany. I know how I feel about that - it's too young and should probably be changed in for most cases. But obviously different societies and jurisdictions have come to different conclusions.
I think both psychology and our own society, wherein people are dependent on their parents on not full-fledged decision makers usually well past 18, suggest the laws should generally endeavor to protect people under 18 at least.
People who argue for younger ages of consent in all circumstances talk about how it's not traumatizing or exploitative, but (1) sometimes it is and (2) the actual nature of modern society matters.

No, if you are 18 and they are 14 it is illegal if you turn 19 before they turn 15. In that case it will remain illegal until the younger one is 16.
Edit: I think I see the confusion. Think about it as years and days older, ignore the numerical ages. If a person is 3 years and 364 days older than it is legal regardless of what the numerical ages are. If a person is 4 years and 1 day older than it is illegal regardless of the numerical are.

It's that terrible thing where we have decided they aren't informed enough to give consent but you can't really charge them both with rape either.
I think Canada have a good set of laws with it being to do with age difference? Since the main reason we protect children is to stop them being taken advantage of. If they are both equally "innocent" then that should be ok.

I used to joke that the age of consent in the vatican is 14 years, (and here is my joke addendum) but only for boys.
To verify that is still the case though, I googled it and found out, it is 14 for girls only, and 16 for boys.... which actually stumped me...

It's likely in the criminal code. I'm not sure, I don't study law, I just know 14 is the age of consent. You can see the age of consent in Wikipedia (btw, I don't agree with this age, I think it should be 16)

It's kind of sensible to have the age of consent be lower for girls since girls go through puberty before boys, if we're talking about sexual maturity. No idea about mental maturity though, plus age of consent is mostly cultural and relatively arbitrary so it makes more sense for it to be the same age for men and women - definitely weird to see a country that bases it purely on biology.

This is the thing that keeps me thinking, and I know this is controversial, but I just don't fully understand it.
This whole age of consent thing, though I understand the point of it, more or less, is a really arbitrary thing. There might be a 16 year old, that is mature enough to actually know enough to properly decide, just as there might be an immature 36 year old that might not be able to properly decide for themselves.
The thing is, there is no age that shows whether we are fully prepared to be the lone holder of full responsibility of ourselves and our decissions. People are constantly learning, and mostly learning from mistakes. If you can make mistakes early (touching hot plates hurts), you know early that this is bad. If you can't make mistakes early (giving consent to being intimate with someone might end up being bad) you artificially delay the natural learning process to an arbitrary age.
In the end, statistics show that the age of consent is being ignored, although I remember seeing that it has a big factor in the US apart from the EU as the statutory rape laws are pretty strict and unforgiving, but if these are no factors, kids and teens usually decide for themselves anyway, disregarding current laws.
It is mostly only a way to protect kids from ... "predators" ... until the actual age, from when on those kids (or adults as we arbitrarily call them then) are not longer protected from those same "predators".
So... do I forget something important, or is this really just arbitrary and weird?

Yeah, it's all pretty bizarre. People mature at different rates both mentally and physically. The age of consent does a decent job at estimating when most people are sexually mature - while many people are sexually mature before the age of consent, better safe than sorry. But mental maturity has way more variance, and we all have different caps too - some people will just never reach the same mental maturity as someone else. Usually it's correlated with age, but I've seen plenty of 30+ year olds with the mentality of 14 year olds - should they be allowed to have sex? Again, it's about just picking an age where we feel most people have matured sufficiently, but there's too much variance for it to really be meaningful.
But who knows - I'm not a lawyer nor a scientist, so maybe I'm way off on this. I certainly don't have any better solution to the issue of consent that wouldn't cause issues of its own.

Thanks, that is a simple answer that is satisfiable enough for me. We have no idea so we have a shot in the dark where we assume most people be ready by then. Although it differs between 12 and 21 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_consent#By_country_or_region), the "better safe than sorry" thing makes the most sense.

Some jurisdictions have a different set of laws surrounding gay sex than they do around straight sex. (Gay threesomes are technically illegal under Canadian sodomy law, for example, even though I can't ever imagine that law being enforced in the 21st century.)

Age of consent in Japan is 13 if the government believes that the relationship is genuine and based on romantic feelings.
So basically, if you're a teacher at a japanese middle school and you fuck a student, as long as she is legitimately into you, it's not a crime. If you were doing Enjo kosai - basically being her sugar daddy, though, you will probably get in trouble, and if you were outright paying her, you will 100% get in trouble.

Here in Brazil the age of consent is 14. It doesn't matter how old you are, as long as the teen is 14 and consents, the sex is legal. Of course, it's still viewed as weird for a adult to have sex with a teen and everyone will still accuse the guy (or woman) of being a pedo if they have sex with a 14 year old, but legally, it's allowed.

No, that's not how it works, at all. It only rises to 16 if you have some kind of custody over them (guardian, teacher), otherwise it's always 14.
The close-in-age clause applies only if they are below 14 and older than 12.

It's legal in a lot of the world. If I recall correctly, it's legal in most of South America. I know 14 is legal in Brazil.

FYI it isn't a crime in Canada, as long as your are 13 - 15. Their law allows sexual relations between minors as long as the minors are less than 2 years apart.

In the us the average age of consent is 17. Now many states have a 16 but only of there is a 4 max difference. Most us readitors donโt know in most of Europe the age of consent is much lower.

In my country the minimal legal age for sex is 14, even though a lot of people think is 18. The law says that as long you're 14 or older you can have sex, as long as everyone involved gives consent. Relationships between adults and 14yo aren't well seem by most people though. (I'm from Brazil btw)
