If you’re ever assigned to give a lesson in church, teach from the gospel topics essays.

Don’t worry, there’s plenty of material in there.

This is also a great idea if you want to be released. And I mean released quickly. Our GD teacher was released two weeks after going over the BofA essay. I had read the essay and he didn’t deviate at all or add an”anti-Mormon” bent during class. We had a number of very upset members and he was released two weeks later.

if they are church sources, how could they even object?

That is amazing! That guy is a hero

Something bat shit crazy over being upset over church published material and yet only want to come to hear comfortable “truth”. If it’s uncomfortable it must come from the devil....

And I thought for years this wasn’t a cult.

I think this is a great idea, you could even pass out copys for sources.

The members have been counseled by the Apostles to "know them like the back of their hands"

Bulletproof approach. Heck, “bookmark these or follow along on your phones if you want! That’s LDS.org.....”

You don’t even need to do that, just show them where the essays are in the gospel library app!! (Library> Topics> Gospel Topics Essays)

Heh...you can tell I clearly pre-date Church Apps. Ugh, I don’t even want to think about that!

We had a fifth Sunday lesson taught by a member of the bishopric on Race and the Priesthood essay. It was not 'approved' by the bishop or anyone else prior. It ruffled some feathers but to my knowledge did not break any shelves.

It is not always about breaking, they need to be strained first.

I taught that too. Got a lot of “I didn’t know that!”

Make sure to play up the faithful spin and bear your testimony when teaching the essays! Talk about how reading about the revelation of polygamy fills you with the spirit of the Lord and that you have a newfound appreciation for the Prophet Joseph having to suffer through marrying other men's wives to do the will of the Lord. It must have been such a hard thing for Joseph to follow the Lord's will and marry a 14 year old.

Talk about how it is wondrous to know that the things leaders used to teach about race were really just cultural baggage, and not of the Lord. Quote some of the talks from prophets or GAs about race and state how happy you are now to know that those people really weren't speaking for the Lord.

I did this once. Got demoted to nursery by the next week.

You: "And all of Joseph Smith's children had MANY mommies. And Christmas was wonderful because every one of his children got presents from all 49 of their mommies."

Later at home: "Daddy---why can't I have 49 mommies like the children of Prophet Joseph had?"

Perfect!

I did that while simultaneously an instructor for EQ and a youth class. I got fired from both.

... or from Jesus' own words in the New Testament. Minds will be blown.

I'm surprised they haven't removed the essays. Why do you think they haven't?

🎙️ GrayWalle · 1 points · Posted at 01:23:01 on January 15, 2019 · (Permalink)

Because the leadership doesn’t think they are harmful.

mlperiwinkle · 1 points · Posted at 02:31:45 on January 15, 2019 · (Permalink)

That's kinda funny isn't it?

I was Gospel Doctrine teacher at the time that the essays were coming out. Everytime a new one came out, I taught that in my lesson, or carved out a section to talk about it. People LOVED my classes. I always put a faithful spin on it. I was trying so very hard for my own sake as much as everyone else's. Eventually I couldn't do it anymore.
