They're just running in circles. We've already played this game. It wasn't that long ago that they asked members to use the full name and then after a few years they just forgot about it and put out "Meet the Mormons" and "I'm a Mormon" videos. Now we're back? This is hilarious.

I suspect the "I am a Mormon" was a outside marketing team's idea. Whereas, this is an 90-year-old reactionary's idea of how to brand the corp... erm church.
By the way, I am a Scientologist campaign pre-dates the I am a Mormon blitz. So, the marketing team lifted the idea, and got a bunch of octogenarians to buy into it--I'm pretty sure that's what happened.

I swear every leadership change they go through this rigamarole of trying to discourage the word "mormon" and then they figure out how impossible it is and realize why the previous leadership gave up on that fight.
Itโs because every time this happens I bet some COB analysts show them a bunch of charts and cost analysis about how effective the word Mormon is to their branding and the Q15 shuts up.

I'll be honest, the only reason I made that comment was to create a link I could click on to see if someone had already made that subreddit, it appears they have hahahaha
While it's rare, we do have some people from other branches of Mormonism like Community of Christ or FLDS. This subreddit isn't exclusive to being ex-LDS, but since LDS make a majority of the Mormonism, it's not a surprise that most of us come from LDS background.
I know you're joking, but I just wanted to point out that we're welcoming of everyone affected by mormonism or similar cults.

The Lord has impressed upon my mind...
Sure he did buddy.
...the importance of the name He has revealed for His Church, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
There's their favorite word again, even even.
While the term "Mormon Church" has long been publicly applied to the Church as a nickname, it is not an authorized title, and the Church discourages its use.
Tough shit. Everyone knows it's the most recognizable name for your church.
The term "Mormonism" is inaccurate and should not be used. When describing the combination of doctrine, culture and lifestyle unique to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the term "the restored gospel of Jesus Christ" is accurate and preferred.
Mormonism works perfectly fine. I see what you're trying to do, but no one outside of your church is going to drop Mormonism and use the restored gospel of Jesus Christ instead.
This is going to be hilarious to see how the church modifies its thousands of websites and publications. Even subdomains they have created campaigns for like 'mormonandgay.lds.org'.
Definitely a corporate move from the top without realizing this is going to be a shit ton of work for no reason lol.

What's wrong with 'memberofthechurchofjesuschristoflatter-daysaintsandgay.thechurchofjesuschristoflatter-daysaints.org'?
Letโs not forget that the full legal name is โCORPORATION OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRISTโ. Which is a corporate sole entity with the president in complete control.
I canโt wait until the missionaries start peddling the โBook of the restored gospel of Jesus Christโ. Theyโve gotta realize that itโs their fundamental text that gives them their nickname.
โIn 180 years Iโm going to make my people bend over backwards to not be called Mormon, a name derived from the holy book I am now telling Joseph to translate. Should I change the name? Ah fuck it.โ - God

Well I was on the mission when the church made a huge deal when Mormon.org was deployed and all of us were like WTF.... we have been introducing ourselves as โlatter day saintsโ...
TBM-me tried so hard to maintain "LDS" use after everyone else started using "Mormon" again. I must have missed the memo that it was alright (even preferred?) to start calling members Mormons again, and I always thought the title was kind of tacky. I didn't want to be called a Mormon.
I remember this well. I also remember church leaders instructing us the exact way to write our religious affiliation in the census -- "latter-day saint" not "LDS" or "Mormon".

Well in 2002 the church filed to copyright the name "Mormon" but was declined because it was too generic of a title, given that there are many different Mormon churches that share the same identity.

Relevant timeline:
Last week, u/johndehlin unveiled a โMormon Storiesโ billboard.
Six days later, Mormon Jesus decides itโs super urgent to abandon the name Mormon and instructs his prophet to get on it stat (starving children in Africa notwithstanding).
I was just wondering if this is a phase in the new narrative plan we've also been hearing about but is all hush-hush....I had one thought, since the book of mormon brings up problematic historical concerns and such, are they building in distance?!
I dunno, seems a little rushed considering all the trademark lawyers, focus groups, beta testers, brand analysts, SEO experts, and market researchers that need to approve the decision.
Yeah, I canโt see my company changing that much of our branding in 6 days and weโre way smaller than the church. It took us months to sign off on changing the logo from lowercase to uppercase.
I read that title as โnew nameโ guidelines and thought it was about temple names. LOL
TSCC seems to periodically back away from โMormonโ to emphasize Jesus, but almost a couple hundred years of branding is hard to distance itself from.
Funny thing about nicknames. You don't get to choose them. People choose them for you. That's why a kid in my 6th grade class was called "Bush" after he fell into a bush one time. It stuck.
They have probably been deliberating for 18 months on this brand revelation. Maybe they can start the lengthy revelation process on the interview policy next?
I am SEETHING about this aspect of it, and that it is being pushed as 'gods will'. God does not give a crap about what people call the church. AND it stinks of the exclusive access to God's power TSCC claims all the while being disrespectful to the thousands of other Christian churches who seek genuine connection to Jesus Christ!!! GAH, glad there is a good place to vent about it.
Some outside P.R. firm probably told them that "Mormon" isn't looked upon very favorably by the public. Only one way to fix that. Not fixing its values, gotta avoid the name!
The only way they can change it is if they come up with a very short name. Trying to replace a one word identifier with sentence long name just doesn't fly.
illyume ยท 27 points ยท Posted at 19:48:45 on August 16, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
No fucking kidding. The reason Mormon has stuck so well is because it's short, and readily identifiable. This is exactly what people want in a group name!
"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints", and its members being called "members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints"--or even just "Latter Day Saints"--is too fucking unwieldly for normal use.
I'm willing to bet money they run a new ad campaign to polish the "Mormon" turd, again, within the next 7 years. And then after Rusty dies the next leader is "inspired" to lather, rinse, repeat.
Good luck with that. We were told this 10 years ago, 20 years ago, and even when my parents were kids...but yeah, God JUST NOW wants the church to avoid using โMormonโ and โLDSโ
Besides, this shows the priorities of the MORMON CHURCH when it comes to important cultural issues
Yeah, when they spent millions of $$$ that should have gone to the poor and needy to promote "I'm a Mormon", they forever lost the right to complain about being called Mormon. You know the most TBM that will be on this are also the first ones who posted their "i'm a Mormon" profiles. Which I will ask them about when they tell me they want to go with the Nelsonite new-speak term.
Oh good. So they can get inspiration for change regarding what name to use, but stopping one-on-one interviews isn't part of it? Glad to know the kids are a priority.
When describing the combination of doctrine, culture and lifestyle unique to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the term "the restored gospel of Jesus Christ" is accurate and preferred.
Welp, you heard it from the man himself. By decree of President Newsroom, church culture is officially a component of the restored gospel and not some separate unrelated phenomenon!

The decision to more closely align with the full name is consistent with past statements by President Nelson, who church members sustained in April as a prophet.
Read: "Don't forget, you all agreed to go along with whatever tripe comes out of his mouth."
"The Church" is an acceptable abbreviation. No self-centered arrogance, is there?
Also, I am curious about how they will handle the Mormon Tablernacle Choir's name.
I think this is referring to news articles about TSCC, if the name of the church is mentioned, then afterwards "the Church" is acceptable as it refers to the identified church in the article. But yeah, it does sound presumptuous and vain.
Wow, Christ really is present in the super important events that the church is dealing with. What else is more important in todays world?
"The Lord has impressed upon my mind the importance of the name He has revealed for His Church, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We have work before us to bring ourselves in harmony with his will. In recent weeks, various Church leaders and departments have initiated the necessary steps to do so. Additional information about this important matter will be made available in the coming months." -nelson
"When referring to Church members, the terms "members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" or "Latter-day Saints" are preferred. We ask that the term "Mormons" not be used."
People are really going to change their mind about the church when investigating, they will be flocking to the fonts!
Especially since they've never even been able to teach most Mormons membersofthechurchofjesuschristoflatter-daysaints to put the hyphen in it. If Mormons membersofthechurchofjesuschristoflatter-daysaints can't even spell it, I don't see how non-Mormons non-membersofthechurchofjesuschristoflatter-daysaints stand a chance.

I have a few questions: when TScc updates their โstyle guideโ who is expected to follow the style guide? For example, do they expect the New York Times to adhere to The style guide as revealed in the restored gospel? Obviously, publications like the New York Times have disregarded preferred stylistic decisions in the past, I.e. when referring to โpresidentโ Monson as simply Monson.
Are lawyers who are drafting legal briefs expected to follow the style guide? Do they expect undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professional academics, to refer to their studies as the restored gospel of Jesus Christ?
Thatโs a main problem for me, Mormonism is a field that is bigger than TScc.
is the guide simply a meaningless gesture? I think a lot of Utah-based publications will adhere to the style guide, even in my hometown in Idaho they follow the style guide. But this isnโt like the MLA or the APA, right? Would the MLA or the APA recognize this?

IIRC the NYT doesn't even use "President" with the President; they say Mr. Trump or Mr. Obama.
This isn't a "style guide" like MLA or APA. No one is obligated to use it. I think it probably exists to help press members who aren't familiar with TSCC avoid stupid mistakes like "The Church of Latter-day Saints."
I thought the name of the church is the corporation of the president of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. If the lord impressed this upon your mind, will the real name change?

Milieu control is a term popularized by psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton to describe tactics that control environment and human communication through the use of social pressure and group language; such tactics may include dogma, protocols, innuendo, slang, and pronunciation, which enables group members to identify other members, or to promote cognitive changes in individuals. Lifton originally used "milieu control" to describe brainwashing and mind control, but the term has since been applied to other contexts

The Mormon leaders have a weird aversion to abbreviations and nicknames.
It's fucking stupid though. Most of the masses are going to continue to use the easiest terms. Saying a fucking eight word title or a six word simplification just bogs a sentence down unnecessarily when a single word could convey the same meaning.

Way to go Russ! Using all of that infinite power that Elohim has given you to solve important, major world problems! Yay for "modern revelation!"
What a fucking joke.
Does this mean the corporation will stop sending out cease-and-desist letters to people using the word "Mormon" not to their liking? Is the corporation dropping the trademark, or servicemark, or whatever-the-hell-it-is-mark that they have on the word "Mormon?"
My eyes hurt from rolling at how ludicrous this is.
They are "caught up in the thick of thin things". Instead of receiving revelation that can actually help people in general or members (see Sam Young) the leadership is more worried about the name or so called good name. What a crock of shit!
This is actually a huge setback for TSCC, in terms of its advertising and accessibility.
Imagine missionaries going from introducing themselves as "mormons," to "latter-day saints." There's something about the word "saint" and it's implications that will make a lot of people really uncomfortable.
It's easy for a person to call themself a "Mormon." It's a lot harder and more awkward to use the word "saint."
Maybe I'm wrong here, but like others have said, give it a few years and this will be changed back.
Yeah the name in Spanish is already really long!(saw the one of the Spanish speaking misdionaries today bc my family fed then dinner. It was great till they wanted to add religion to it.)
Too bad they tacked on "of Latter-day Saints" a couple of centuries ago. "Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" makes it sound like a different Jesus than the regular one. It's like:
A: "Which Jesus?"
B: "The Jesus of Latter-day Saints."
A: "Oh right, that one."
I mean, it has to be the "Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," because that's the only way you can make sense of the two of's, grammatically speaking.
"Latter-day Saints" also sounds like a doomsday cult that is focused on being in the last days and waiting for the end of the world to happen. And who the hell calls themselves "saints"? Seriously, how arrogant is it to call yourself a saint? They'd be better off sticking with "Mormon." Not that they have a choice, since the rest of the world is going to keep calling them that anyway. LOL.
They should have just gone with a symbol, like Prince did, because even the Associated Press is gonna balk as using something other than "Mormon" on the second and subsequent references.
They got you exmormons. Now that word doesn't mean anything. You are all members again and will have to pay back tithes until you officially become r/exladderdaysaints

I'm actually really excited every time the prophet has a "revelation" like this. Many comments from the faithful sub and KSL are along the lines of, "Oh brother, why is this important? Seems unnecessary."
"The Lord has impressed upon my mind the importance of the name He has revealed for His Church, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."
What is with Mormons using "even" in that context? "in his name, EVEN Jesus Christ, amen." This is such an outdated language that proves they're still in the 18th century way of thinking.

In light of all the controversy TSCC is mired in right now, this is what they choose to focus on? Who the hell cares? Even as a TBM, I found this sort of thing stupid.
As a nondenominational Protestant, this is frightening to me. They want people to confuse them with Christianity. That will be very damaging to people.
[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:35:58 on August 17, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Absolutely. What hurts me is that theyโve taken this and twisted it to suit their own ends; to manipulate people. There are many more Christianity-based cults (Church of Christ, Christian Science, Old Mennonite, etc.), but itโs really hard to match them up with the non-condemnational attitude of who Jesus really was.
Mormon LGBT kids are killing themselves, a former bishop is literally starving himself to try and stop children from being exposed to sexually explicit questions and God thinks it's most important to tell President Nelson that what we need the most right now is to stop calling ourselves LDS?! Is this really what the Lord is telling us right now?!
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:33:11 on August 17, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
They tried this 15-20 years ago. I think Hinkley was president at the time. Failed then, and it will fail now. The world at large only knows the church and its members as Mormon.
This level of pedantry would have really bothered me as a believer, and I'm already pedantic in general. The name of the Church and "restored Church of Jesus Christ" are both uncomfortably long, but "the Church" and "the Church of Jesus Christ" are both ambiguous, even during a secondary reference if more than one religion is being discussed in the same article.
What's worse is the rejection of the term "Mormonism". For every religion--unless they want to be like deluded born-again Christians who like to pretend that their beliefs, for reasons none of them have ever coherently explained to me, do not constitute a religion--there needs to be a term that encapsulates all aspects of that religion, and "Mormonism" does that better than any term heretofore created. The term "Restored Gospel" refers strictly to doctrine and can't be used in as broad a sense. Even as a believer, I liked having my own "ism", but they've been chipping away at every cool aspect of it for my entire life.
Finally, I remember hearing about Mormon.org as a teenager and being surprised that they were pushing the term "Mormon" so heavily when we had been under a directive similar to this one. It seems the pendulum has swung back. Could it be that there's a reason for the lack of consistency?
Probably because of chat room people like me who blather on about Moroni the demon of ghouls. That's why we do baptismal of the dead; to create ghouls. I mean if Lucifer was an angel can't be hard to pose as a demon, why can't a demon pose as an angel?
Deja Vu all over again, and the Mormons will all start talking about what a great revelation this is, and how they really need to work towards and encourage it, and in a few weeks it will be forgotten about until they decide to bring it up again...
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:30:27 on August 16, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Are they directing this to members or the world? If itโs to the members, keep it off KSL and announce it in church. If itโs to the entire world, they need to fuck right off. I will never abase myself by calling it โthe restored gospel of Jesus.โ

It seems odd that revelations directly from God are about such pedestrian matters as nicknames and how many earrings a woman can wear. No revelations about expressing love, or living better lives. Pretty low grade God.
bnbcoder ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:58:03 on August 16, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Well folks. The revelation continues with ol Rusty. This is the stuff we need prophets for.
"The Lord has impressed upon my mind the importance of the name He has revealed for His Church, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," President Nelson said in a statement. "We have work before us to bring ourselves in harmony with his will.
I feel like he's just reaching at this point. Woke up and was like what can I do that'll make it look like I'm inspired in any way desperate for some sort of validation as a profit. Came up with this rehashed idea and then when people start asking what about all of these instances where the church officially used Mormon or lds and what now just slinks back into the bushes like oops maybe should have thought this through a little more

Yawn .deja vu. So a revelation. And that is all jesus had to say to his, ahem His, prophet. What a precious squib he must be this jesus no show guy.
And If they want to be accurate isnt the churches actual name " Intellectual Reserve Inc, as trustee for the Corporation of the President of the Church of jesus christ of latter day saints"?

Good to know they're focused on the important stuff. Heaven forbid they do something useful. Protect LDS children? Nah, let's make sure people say our name how we want.
i thought the reason they embraced 'mormon' with all the mormon.org and I'm a Mormon campaigns is because that's how the world refers to TSCC. It makes more sense to embrace that and own it from a marketing perspective...
do they really think anyone who isn't a TBM is gonna say 'the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ" instead of Mormonism?! ๐ good luck mormons.
Again? What is this 2003? Lol I donโt actually remember the date just be a young teenager who felt bad for just saying mormon when my religion came up because it was easier. It worked so well then i can totally see why they are giving it another go.
Correct me if Iโm wrong, but isnโt saying that the church has always disapproved of the word โMormonโ and itโs use gaslighting? Or some form of manipulation? Because Iโm pretty sure they embraced the word when Iโm a Mormon campaign and Mormon.org and all the other stuff came out. Also side note, is Pres Nelson implying that previous prophets were wrong when they said โmormonโ?

So the last prophet thought the exact opposite thing was right, now we're flipping a 180 and claiming it as inspiration. It's one thing to be like "prophets are human" and that's totally true. But it's another when they claim inspiration for controverting their predecessors' long-standing policies. Of course, believers will say that one thing was right for one point in time, and another thing was right for another, and indeed I cannot prove that _isn't_ the case (being an unobservable abstraction). But I present for consideration an alternative explanation, which is that every apostle has their own ideas, their own pet projects, and they try to persuade the rest that their ideas are inspired. Sometimes they succeed, sometimes they fail. And by the time you become prophet, you have a whole back pocket full of failed ideas, but now _you're the prophet_ so all you have to say is "The Lord has impressed upon my mind the importance of ________" and fill in your pet project to get what you've always wanted. It seems this was probably one of those things for Russell M. Nelson, who spoke on this topic back in the 90's.
Now, when some benefit arises from this decision, believers will use it as evidence of its inspiration. Of course, almost everything has pros and cons, so he could have announced that the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" thing was being abandoned and they were going all-in on "Mormon". "The Lord has impressed upon my mind the importance of the name of the keystone scripture, The Book of Mormon, the name from which we will now adopt for all purposes." Then people see benefits form _that_ decision and claim it as inspiration.
TLDR: prophet announces pet project as if God ordained it, something good results from it, believers feel their prophet is vindicated.
Quote from the article: "It encouraged a new shortened reference for the church, the "Church of Jesus Christ," and said "the restored Church of Jesus Christ" is also accurate and encouraged."
Just more spin from the bunch of fucking liars at the top of the cult's leadership and in concert with their PR dept. They are trying to make themselves sound like just another Christian church. My guess is they have finally started to realize that most of the world looks at them like the lying bastards they really are, ergo they're better off to sound more generic. What's so great to know is that they have shot themselves in the foot so many times that it doesn't matter anymore what they call themselves, the jig is up, people know. They're on the decline and they know it.
They probably had to sit in countless meetings deciding, of all things, what name should we use? Sounds like something a group of lawyers would do, when there are countless fires going on in our country and people starving around the world, this church is a fucking joke.
ย When describing the combination of doctrine, culture and lifestyle unique to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the term 'the restored gospel of Jesus Christ' is accurate and preferred.
Checkmate every tbm who ever told me the culture and the gospel were the same...

I lived practically opposite a church of jesus christ of latter day saints (about 100 metres down, actually up it's on steep road) for about 6 years in Tunbridge Wells and had no idea what church it was. It was only when I had lessons with the missionaries, I was bored and they were pretty, that I realised it was the mormon church. I would stick with mormon if I were them.

While the term "Mormon Church" has long been publicly applied to the Church as a nickname, it is not an authorized title, and the Church discourages its use. Thus, please avoid using the abbreviation "LDS" or the nickname "Mormon" as substitutes for the name of the Church, as in "Mormon Church," "LDS Church," or "Church of the Latter-day Saints."

This was a big thing on my mission.

AgentOfAngst ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 23:35:48 on August 16, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Maybe I'm wrong here, but like others have said, give it a few years and this will be changed back.

dwindlers ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 21:03:28 on August 16, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
LOL.

In the name of His Holy Son, yea, even Jesus the Christ, our Lord, our Savior, and Redeemer, I know the Prophet is the mouthpiece of God on earth. Yesterday I improperly used the sinful term "Mormon" when referring to my sacred religion and I felt like I needed to repent, yea, even unto self-flagellation. Now I know why, I let Satan enter my heart as I uttered those words and our beloved Heavenly Father wanted to cast me down, even into the bitter depths of hell. President Russell M. Nelson, Prophet, Seer and Revelator of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints saved my soul as he reminded me what is truly most important in this life. By small and simple things are great things brought to pass." By me using the proper name for the one true Church, as inspired by his Holy Prophet, I feel closer to God the Father and Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. All three of them surround me as I say the special words. How grateful I am to have the opportunity to give a full and honest tithe, read my scriptures, and obey my leaders. This I say unto you all in the name of his Holy of Holiest Sons, even his one True Son, from our Truest of Holy Mothers in Heaven, yea, even her, in Jesus name I pray-tell thee. I'm actually really excited every time the prophet has a "revelation" like this. Many comments from the faithful sub and KSL are along the lines of, "Oh brother, why is this important? Seems unnecessary."
Thank you for hastening the exodus Mr. Nelson!

What is with Mormons using "even" in that context? "in his name, EVEN Jesus Christ, amen." This is such an outdated language that proves they're still in the 18th century way of thinking.

Stelercus ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:06:13 on August 16, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Could it be that there's a reason for the lack of consistency?
stonedinahat ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:14:22 on August 16, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
