That sounds so sad! I can just imagine a homeless person sitting in sacrament meeting crumbling a tiny piece of Wonderbread smashed flat by unwashed hands into one of those tiny sacrament cups and dropping a single tear into it to season it. Meanwhile everyone else in the room is business as usual.
I had a tbm tell me no new temples were announced. Did they seriously announce 7 new temples in the same week they combined the priesthood quorums, announced the closure of 2 mtc's, and discontinued reading membership stats?
Yes. One in Utah, one in India, one in the Philippines, one in Russia (at which millions of TBMs came), one in Virginia, and two others I can't remember.
Oh good, I drove through utah this week and there was a 5 minute stretch where I couldn't see a temple. Thank god they'll fill in that gap, it just wasn't right.
Well if they want to go broke for pointless reasons, who am I to stop them.
It just means more places are open to people like me who don't care about the temple view.

It's crazy. I lived in American Fork once, before the built the temple. Had the house built, hadn't even put in lawn yet. Mormons announced the temple at the other end of town. My property value spiked like 20K if memory serves, for a house on the other end of town.
Iโm tempted to post this on my facebook feed! Probably get unfriended by alot of TBM relations.
Colieoh ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 16:14:10 on April 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
I'm so tempted! But I won't. I've said enough to piss my family off. I already got my hand slapped for saying that Utah didn't need another building you had to pay to get into.
True story. My TBM coworker got pissed about an employee fundraiser for relief efforts after Hurricane Harvey. They kept loudly complaining that if you really wanted to help people, you would donate to your church instead. They wonโt participate in anything that office does like school supply drives or Christmas present drives. Like fine, donโt donate but donโt chastise people in the office that do.
I find it interesting that the Bountiful temple was hit by lightening and the Houston Temple was flooded! And don't forget all the changes they have made to the endowment etc.
I actually had a mission companion who thought that all of the temples were supposed to stand undamaged until the millennium. He was really shaken when he heard about a spire falling off of the DC temple.
Thatโs a missionary who doesnโt know his history.
The Nauvoo temple was utterly destroyed. The Logan temple and the St George temples both had major fires in the 19th century. Of the first 5 temples, one was destroyed, and two were baddly damaged, very early on.
TSCC is like a fucking stray dog marking its territory with piss (temples) and thinking its relevant, while the rest of us watch and understand, its just a dog.. doing dog.
I'd much rather they spent their money on useless temples than on schools and orphanages. The last thing kids need is Mormons running their lives more than they already do.

Temples do saving ordinances for the dead.
People can buy soup in the stores.
LDS has BYU and Polynesian schools.
Private hospitals do a good job.
LDS has family placement/adoption services.
See - TheLard has it covered and both government and private organizations take care of the rest just fine.
Actually the church shut down their family placement/adoption services back in 2014. They gave some lame reasons for doing it, but it was pretty obvious that the writing was on the wall for gay marriage legalization and they knew they wouldn't be able to discriminate against married gay couples as potential placement families.
The people should know where their money goes. My church has an annual general update during Sunday services with an evening meal and meeting for the specifics as well as whatever may need voting on by the members.
someone can correct me if I'm off, but my understanding is that the church's philanthropy / humanitarian contributions do not use tithing funds. Those causes can be donated to specifically and I can tell you that donors absolutely DO receive reports on the use of those funds.
Anyway the point is that those things have never been formally announced in general conference and likely never will. This post is slanted at best and deliberately deceptive at worst.
someone can correct me if I'm off, but my understanding is that the church's philanthropy / humanitarian contributions do not use tithing funds.
I don't know if that is the case. I don't see this as an important point in either case.
Those causes can be donated to specifically and I can tell you that donors absolutely DO receive reports on the use of those funds.
Sure. But how often and how much does the church ask people to donate to these causes? Not terribly often, and as much as you are able.
Now how often and how much does the church ask people to pay in tithing? Every single conference and several to dozens of times in stake and ward meetings, 10% of your salary/income.
No matter how you cut it, much more will be paid to tithing than humanitarian efforts. And what does the church do with that surplus (because it is undoubtedly much more than is needed)? Malachi 3 is not about those wicked people who did not pay tithing. It is about the corrupt priesthood which had a tithing surplus and failed to redistribute their surplus to the poor.
Given that the church's level of surplus each year is in billions of dollars and given that their humanitarian efforts are roughly 1% of their income, I would say that Malachi 3 applies just as strongly to the modern LDS church as the wicked priests in Malachi's day.
pro tip. there is no such fund as "non-tithing" money which exists within the church. tithing funds from the beginning have been used to start businesses, investments, etc. just because now the investments and businesses have been successful and the returns from those businesses can be used on non church things like shopping malls the truth of the matter is the church would have never had money if not for tithing. it's just been prioritized for so long in growing businesses that produce profit that now it's easier to say "these funds did not come from tithing".
right. and the $5 I gave to my son to invest which yielded $100 now didn't spend $95 that came from my money given to him.
also the church did announce what they've spent on humanitarian aid over the last 30 years and every Mormon should be up in arms how much goes to humanitarian aid versus lavish rugs in the temples.
unslant those deliberately deceptive numbers and we can talk about how deceptive you feel this post is
[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:04:27 on April 2, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Though reasonable efforts will be made globally to use donations as designated, all donations become the Church's property and will be used at the Church's sole discretion to further the church's overall mission.
Translation: Just because you donate to the humanitarian aid fund, does not mean that money is only (or ever) spent on humanitarian aid. Everything goes into one big pot, and the church decides, with zero transparency, how that money is spent.
Please point me to a report on how those funds are spent. I am looking for just a basic balance sheet summary of funds received, how those funds were designated, and funds dispersed.
No, it should not be announced from the pulpit. But on the other hand, why announce temples if not to get the membership excited? Why is PR spin any better than alms before men?
Also, the church does a few of these things, sure, but the point is that the clear financial priority is on building new temples (which Jesus never talked about) and not serving the poor (which Jesus talked about extensively). If we estimate the money spent on "adorning the church" and compare that to the money spent on actual charity, it is different by orders of magnitude.
