Roses are red, Mormonism is deplorable; Differences are punished, Unless they are exploitable.

The ankle strap is definitely a gag factor, but her being a Mormon icon for absolutely nothing is another. People look up to this woman when all she did was get rich off of them. She took advantage of a business opportunity. She's nothing special. Drives me bonkers when they talk about her like she's the pope.

Does she have tattoos on her calves? My guess is no since she had gone to great lengths selecting shoes that show off the tats on her feet

Korzag ยท 29 points ยท Posted at 22:47:28 on December 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I kinda hope she continues to get tattoos regardless of the church's stance on them. I think it could do wonders for the culture of the church if they stopped shaming people for decorating their bodies.

Yeah, I'm not sure the church is making her cash the checks from her books and paid-for 'fireside' appearances. Not sure how much she makes, but when we were looking for a celebrity speaker for a stake youth conference a few years back, we contacted a few well known ones and they asked for an appearance fee, travel costs, etc.

TheDestroyingAngel ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 01:02:24 on December 14, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Mormon celebrity speakers cost money eg John Bytheway, Al Tattooed Mormon, among others? Just when I think Iโ€™ve heard it all.

I know nothing about Al Carraway, but every time I see her book I think "why is it actually a big deal?" I've seen plenty of tattooed mormons. I was one. Why are they making it a thing??? And seriously the strap over the pants is horrible.

Wemenmenmen ยท 55 points ยท Posted at 20:51:27 on December 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

At this point it has just become a circlejerk. "Oh look, this Mormon girl has tattoos and is accepted! How cool of our religion!" A grand total of 0 of the nevermos I've shown it to have given a single fuck. One even went so far as to call it "terrible propaganda."

I suspect the original intention was to try and sell Mormonism to the younger generations as being cool and accepting, but from my experience it has backfired quite badly.

[deleted] ยท 25 points ยท Posted at 01:11:35 on December 14, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I guarantee 82.3% of thd people who hold her up as an example of how tolerant we are would freak out if someone in their family got a tattoo. Nothing has changed except a bit of propaganda.

Amen. The fact that you have to create propaganda about how, "we really truly do accept people with tattoos!!" just makes normal people wonder "WTF, why is this an issue? Are tattooed people ostracized in Mormonism?"

armchairracer ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 04:36:34 on December 14, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Right. Tattoos are seen as a complete non-issue to most of America. It's not like she has gang tattoos on her face or a swastika on her head. Who's going to read her book and go, "Yeah, I want to join that church and get ostracized by every single person I meet until I prove I'm more "holier than thou" than all of them?"

I got a tattoo on my ankle just before my shelf totally crashed, when I was fairly nuanced in my beliefs. Iโ€™d wanted a tattoo for decades, and when Hinckley gave his infamous talk I was sad that I hadnโ€™t already got the tattoo, and suddenly it was too late.

Anyway, I was teaching 8-9 yo primary and the comments they made! Not directly at me, of course, but in answers to questions I asked. โ€œWhat are some sins that might tempt you?โ€ โ€œ Getting a tattoo!โ€ It was nuts.

FTR my ankle tattoo is less than 2โ€ across and is of Minnie Mouse.

It's the same shit as David Archuleta. Making money off of mormons by marketing everything they do to them. I'm not saying that in a negative sense, to be clear. All celebrities do that. It just pisses me off when Mormons talk about these people being their heroes. They're literally celebrities who got rich off of you. Stop that!

pubicenemy ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 03:49:18 on December 14, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Certainly thereโ€™s an LDS dermatologist that would do the laser tattoo removal for free or in exchange for some marketing materials or promos. She loves being the tattooed Mormon and the attention it garners, along with the book revenue.

We should start a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for tattoo removal and call her bluff.

I typed this up when I forst joined reddit. It didnโ€™t seem loke it got put up. I think it belongs here... It's hard to take issue with progress in the Church, but it's hard not to be extremely frustrated with how agonizing it is to watch (like waiting for my 5 year old to recite the Gettysburg Address; hint: he doesn't know what the GA is yet). I feel some measure of appreciation for Tom Christofferson in that he will at a minimum get some TBMs to think about gay differently, and undoubtedly will open some eyes and provide ways to have productive dialogues. Yet, he is the brother of an apostle, and won the leadership roulette game. Plus, he had almost 2 decades to experience love. For him to choose a church over the man he supposedly loved casts a shadow on that love. Like with so many situations in the Church, people cast aside known and tangible things that are good, healthy, and loving, in favor of intangible and suspiciously unprovable things. "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." The Mormon God wants Tom to eat dinner alone for the rest of his life, to sleep in an empty bed, and thank God for it. That's way more disgusting of an idea to me than any kind of whisper "gay sex." I hope we get his partner's take on the matter some day. How betrayed and confused he must be.

tapdanceondctemple ยท 19 points ยท Posted at 21:37:54 on December 13, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I read an article once, can't seem to find it, but Christofferson's ex-was quoted as saying in regards to the church and its leaders, (paraphrasing) "You would think they would be more interested in helping us keep our relationship together, rather than tearing it apart." I think this book will do far more harm to the LGBT youth of tscc than good. I can just hear TBM parents berating their kids and saying, "If you loved the Lord enough, like Tom Christofferson, then you'd forsake your evil ways." He's getting his 15 minutes, no matter how many young people he harms.

So many people have tried to get me to read Al Fox's blog after I've told them or they've sensed that I have all but removed my name off the records. I suppose they think I'll think, "Oh this obviously very rebellious girl with tattoos who is "hip" and "cool" found her place in the Church, I guess I'll give it another shot." Because I have a very non-traditional backstory. My friend even gave me her book for my birthday. Worst. present. ever. I read some of it and it depressed me. She essentially broke ties with her family (who she was very close to prior to joining) so she could be a Mormon and move to Utah. I honestly feel bad for her. What a waste of your life to give up your family for a false sense of eternal safety. And her writing style annoys me.

Why do I feel like Tom Christofferson had a 'change of heart' right around his retirement age? When, you know, he could write a book endorsed by the church and probably make a good chunk of money to sail off into the sunset with. Gotta get in on that Zions Book authorship gravy train.

And it is funny to see this woman being embraced on a church wide level, while you have to wonder how it works locally. I mean, I have a relatively small tattoo on my calf, and there was basically a revolt among youth parents when I was called to the bishopric and wore shorts to YM activities. Seriously, bishop mentioned to me that a couple mothers in the ward came to him and asked him to tell me to wear long pants to all activities so the kids couldn't see my tattoo.

I sometimes think about the situation of the "Celebrity Mormon."

It almost feels like they've made the conscious decision to sell out.

Think about the attention you'd get if you were a prominent exmormon/atheist who posted on reddit exmo for years and all of a sudden one day you "finally saw the light!"

If you came up with some holy vision or dream and told it at every Stake Conference for the rest of your days?

Can you imagine the publicity and celebrity status you'd achieve within the cult? You could write a book and make some big money, not to mention all the "friends" you'd make!

One of you should do this.

For science.

Edit: IIRC there was an atheist who did this in mainstream xtianity, and is now a successful blogger or something, but my memory is faint on the topic. To my knowledge there hasn't been a Mormon leave and come back yet (or at least they didn't play their hand right if they did...).

Coincidence that both of their smiles remind me of vampires?

I honestly thought speaking would have been voluntary. I understand reimbursing travel expenses if itโ€™s a far trip. Since you mentioned tapes, I remember having several of Mr. Bythewayโ€™s tapes. The church certainly didnโ€™t hand those out, my parents would buy them as a Christmas present from Deseret Boom (probably because I never would have bought them with my own money).

They're both getting paid by the church.

I'll bet Tom is making a really good living pretending mormonism is better than being in a loving relationship.

During conference the cameraman always seems to find Token in the choir.

You are thinking of a different one. I can't remember her name right now.

Lindsey Stirling?

Lol, no. She's an untattooed violinist. Also hasn't left the church as far as I'm aware.
