I had a seminary teacher for two years in high school who would teach the same lesson on this every year regardless of whether or not we were studying the New Testament. He encouraged us to "get out of the boat", in the sense that you need to have the faith to abandon what you know to follow Christ... or something like that. All of the "stay in the boat" business has made me laugh because of it.

Considering the fact that TBMs, especially TBM teenagers, like to believe in certain things but don't like to believe in them at the same time if they contradict, it worked well. Get out of the boat to follow Jesus, but stay in the boat/TSCC. Totally makes sense to do both.
Suddenly realizing that I got out of the boat and left the church to do what I thought was right and thus learned from that seminary lesson after all.

How do we get #getoutoftheboat trending? It could be a coming out of the closet, leaving religion, following Jesus etc... just anti institution sentiment or doing whats right for its own sake sentiment. Standing up to bad traditions and fighting for good. It would be a criticism of institutions (religious, governmental, corporate, etc...) we all find ourselves in that we may otherwise think are good but have flaws and carry us down bad paths if we do not pay close attention.
It could cover everything. Say the republican party for example...
"I will not vote for the serial child rapist Roy Moore." #getoutoftheboat #countryoverparty
I am sure there are tons of applicable non-mormon topics that this could be relevant too. Throw in the Matthew scripture when it starts getting popular and spread that around Mormon circles.

I'm sure this is a common youth conference theme but there is a good chance I worked as a river guide on that youth conference. I worked as a guide in a place and with a company that is very popular with church youth groups and I know a group that had this theme this year.
Ironically the odds are he was pushed out of the raft at times and other times jumped in the river for fun. If only they extended the analogy that far..
