Still blows my mind that Joe Smith could question other churches, but we can't question his. 🙄

As an ExMo, please understand that: while the faithful are allowed - nay, required! - to preach their truth to all, you are absolutely NOT entitled to reciprocate in kind.

It's amazing how a church built in the 1830's and 40's expects to function in today's environment. The jig is up, the interwebs spilled the beans, the book of mormon is apocryphal, and the church is not "true". Actual professional historians do scholarly research on the mormon church because it is still trying to peep into stones and sell people on its exclusive truth claims. It is like a train wreck, these are PHD's who aren't mormon, who are so intrigued by the clear falsehoods, that they just have to rubberneck and watch the slow burning of a truly messed up cult(ure).

And the notion of any one book forever being more perfect than any other is obselete.

It was so perfect they had to make thousands of edits.

to be fair, the church we have today is a 1950's remodeled version.

I remember learning about Scientology (when Tom Cruise was jumping on couches) and thinking; "How could anyone buy into this? It is such an obvious fraud".

Now I am ashamed that I bought into this obvious fraud for so many years.

Leah Remini’s book was actually one of the first things that caused me to start to question. While I read it, I realized everything Scientology does, the LDS church does something similar.

I also loved that Leah HATES Tom. I cannot stand him so it was nice getting a peek behind the scenes and realizing he is a major ass in front and behind the camera.

Applies to more than just religion.

You're allowed to question it to yourself, as long as your answer ends up being that it's true! 🤔

stillinbutout · 14 points · Posted at 14:08:49 on October 7, 2017 · (Permalink)

Step 1: Apply any level of scrutiny to a church to delineate why you think it isn't true. Step 2: Apply the same scrutiny to your church. Step 3: Now you are an atheist.

Funny. I go into the woods almost every Sunday now and keep on getting the answer "I should join no church".

Which ironically is exactly the same answer joe smith got....

Makes me ashamed that I honestly thought that all the other religions were wrong, and needed to eventually come to the TSCC to be saved. What a very arrogant position to hold. Even worse, treating them accordingly.

Nazeka21 · 4 points · Posted at 16:39:03 on October 7, 2017 · (Permalink)

Just to be fair to Joseph, he didn't question any other churches either. In fact he joined the Methodists years after the first vision supposedly happened. The questioning other churches part didn't get added to the story until later retellings. What he really was questioning when he went into the forest was how he could make some money.

Well he already asked the question and found out the answer... No need to check for yourself! That is the wonderful thing about the Holy Ghost (TM)

If you got a different answer you are just doing it wrong anyway. So why look for an answer if only 1 is acceptable? /s

mermicornogirl · 2 points · Posted at 03:56:38 on October 8, 2017 · (Permalink)

Joe asked if there was any correct church he should join and got NO. He is considered entirely flawless and got the right answer. Now we're only allowed to ask if the LDS church is the correct church to join/stay in, and the only correct answer is YES. Any other answer means you are flawed and that's why you got the wrong answer.

Beezer_Washingbeard · 1 points · Posted at 16:17:21 on October 7, 2017 · (Permalink)

You can "question" the church as long as you conclude that it is the One True Church™.
