I don't even know what to extrapolate from the two events - Hales' presence on earth was the only thing holding back a mass atrocity? The shooter said "Well fuck it; if Hales isn't around anymore I might as well shoot up the place"? Makes no sense.

DYK when you edit within the first two minutes or so, it doesn't show you edited anything? It's called a phantom edit, and while it could possibly be used nefariously, it also is helpful when something like pressing enter too soon happens and you need to finish your thought.
I would wager that 100% of them would be like "who the hell are you?" if that was true. Tom Petty also passed away around the same time.....coincidence? I think not.

Unfortunately, this is a great way to illustrate the damage that this church can do to a psyche. This is potentially someone with serious problems, but think about all the random events that normal everyday people experienced as members and that we interpreted as potentially being a "sign" of god's wishes, or of satan's influence....Martin Harris and the flickering candle, for example. Members identify correlations where there are none and live life accordingly.
Leaving this toxic dump of a mindset was the best thing that ever happened to me.

I remember when Benson died in May 1994. There was a large storm that afternoon that blew down trees and caused minor damage. I was full on TBM at the time getting ready for my mission and just knew that it was God's way of sending off one of his most faithful servants. Then almost a year later when Hunter died I was in the MTC and again there was a big wind storm that night and again I thought it must have been a sign from God.
But this....this is just nonsense. Are the 50+ victims somehow more important than the thousands of people who die every day? Is that why an 'important' servant of God had to die at the same time to escort them into heaven or something?
