I had a mission companion who scraped the fork across his teeth when we were eating. It drove me BATTY. He was a good guy and all, but holy smoke I HATED that sound. Eyring's mouth sounds too are so awful.

Eyring drives me crazy with it. I can forgive it in a little child speaking at church. I can overlook it when an insecure teenage girl does it. But when a man who makes his living speaking does it all the time it's inexcusable.
Don't they have people who manage their public image? Oh yeah, I forgot, "it's wrong to criticize the apostles even when the criticism is true," so no, they don't have people who can manage their public image.
That's actually a requirement for RS presidencies, too. The higher the octave, the more holier than thou. (Welcome to the Family of Thous here on the sub).
It blows my mind how many TBMs love this video since it's basically a demystification of the bullshit way LDS leaders talk to sound significant, and how mundane and irrelevant their stories all are. I feel like the silliness of the topic lets them get away with it more.
Ehn. Mormons aren't incapable of making fun of themselves, so long as it's pretty innocuous and comes from the inside, like that video. Plus, I think a lot of the appeal of the video for TBMs is that the viewer gets to feel like they're righteous and diligent enough to get the joke-- they say to themselves "Haha, I get that joke because I'm super righteous and watch so much General Conference that I can recognize each apostle's individual speaking style. I am in the In-Group!"
I know that when I first saw that video as a lukewarm BYU student, I actually had never made the least effort to consciously distinguish the apostles from each other. But when all my friends were laughing like crazy over the video, I felt self-conscious about it and hastened to laugh along, and pretend that I totally was intimately familiar with the distinct speaking styles. The TBM viewer isn't thinking about how the accurate parody reveals the rhetorical calculations of the Q12; they're thinking about how finding the joke funny confirms that they're a good Mormon.
Also, the "if it's funny you can get away with stuff that might otherwise offend" rule applies in full force here. I've seen that apply in countless situations.

I haven't been active in the church for over 15 years, and I stopped believing and watching the General Conferences (which to be honest, I was forced to watch) for even longer than that, and this is the first time I've seen this video, and I only vaguely recognize a few of those people. All that said, I still thought it was funny... I mean, just the silly content and the voices alone are pretty great.

P.S. If you're not LDS, you should go to mormon.org to listen to how these guys actually talk so you can see just how good these impressions are!
I've seriously wondered if they coach people who give conference talks to speak like that. It's always that slow, soft spoken manner with that a certain cadence to it. It's very hypnotic, very similar to videos meant for hypnotizing or meditation
Jackie O used a "breathy" vocal technique; she exhaled as she spoke. I believe Marilyn Monroe used a similar technique. A friend of mine had serious trouble from straining her voice while lecturing in front of groups; the speech therapist she went to taught her about that technique & told her Jackie O had used it.
You just unknowingly answered my question. Thanks... When I watched the movie something in Natalie's performance bothered me, and I knew it was the way of talking .... but honestly, it was until this post that it hit me, that it was like listening some woman talking during a GC meeting. I liked the movie, I liked Natalie's performance; it was that just that something that felt awkward while watching it.
I haven't been in the church for a long time, but it reminds me of a testimony that the bishop's wife made one day.
They had gone camping as a family, and apparently a bear got close to the camp. If it weren't for the Heavenly spirit giving her son the courage to shoot his rifle and scare it away, they all would have died. Except that story took twenty minutes to tell, with profuse sobbing and multiple tissue breaks. She was notorious for shit like that.
Was it a black bear? Because I feel that would make the story even funnier. Those things are sissies, it would run away if you farted, let alone shot a fucking gun off.
It is almost as if they were trying to sell something to our hearts... Something like, oh I don't know... Heartsell®?
</sarcasm>
Seriously, though; perfect impersonation of EVERY CHURCH LEADER.
Dravin84 ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 21:41:40 on September 27, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
I remember going to a LDS Family Services before my mission over anxiety. I recall him commenting that I'll do fine because I know how to invoke the 'voice of the Spirit'. I recall at the time finding it weird and almost blasphemous that 'the Spirit' was just a certain way of speaking. Looking back at it though it makes perfect sense.
Its why thoughts on things and stuff is one of the few content creators I'll share with LDS people. If they don't get soft heartsell, they won't listen or think. Period.

The sad thing is the pernicious effects of this TSCC promoted stereotype of righteousness.
Edit: i.e. I guess it works both ways, when I hear that bubble-gum personality I'm instantly tuning out.
I recently noticed some people in my family talk like this when they try to be spiritual, which is a jarring departure from their normal speaking patterns. It honestly comes across as insincerity and superficiality trying to disguise themselves as spiritual and insightful. In reality, itโs more akin to wearing a facade and just regurgitating whatever church talking points have been drilled into their heads. It worries me how insulated mormon culture can be when this can become a default way of speaking.
This is my all-time most despised of those triggering types of speaking. It's from an October 2002 talk, and I still remember how I cringed each time she said "A woman of faith..." in her whiny, Molly voice.
Oh my ... the ending.. that exactness. But wait, wait a minute! it just hit me! I recently watched Natalie Portman's "Jackie" film ... did Jackie Kennedy spoke like that? is there a relation with how those women speak in the GC?
Truly hilarious, love this. Seriously, though, the sociological implications of that type of speech, we SHOULDN'T want our daughters to emulate this personality, we shouldnt want them to look up to a heirchy that gives them a definitively lower role. Women make money these days, they control their own economic fate. Submission to men/their husbands/religious style leaders, if ever had any sort of validity, certainly doesnt now.

<sarcasm>
Holy smokes! It wasn't "The Spirit©" that made them talk like that! It wasn't that they are "Celestial Kingdom™" level material. IT WAS AN ARTIFICIAL INFLECTION, an easy to mimic vocal cadence and body language used to produce the impression of extraordinary spirituality...
It is almost as if they were trying to sell something to our hearts... Something like, oh I don't know... Heartsell®?
</sarcasm>

It's from an October 2002 talk, and I still remember how I cringed each time she said "A woman of faith..." in her whiny, Molly voice.
https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2002/10/a-woman-of-faith?lang=eng
As you might guess, she was the YW president at the time.
