I took the liberty to translate the whole piece to English. Sorry in advance for any grammatical errors or confusion, Icelandic doesn't always translate really well to English.

"I'm free from the disease, the cancer. The damn disease is gone. Until it comes back, whenever that will be, which will hopefully be never." says Stefán Karl Stefánsson about his life after two surgeries for liver cancer. "Life is now. It's almost a miracle that I'm still here."

Stefán Karl described to the radio show "Síðdegisútvarpið" on the radio channel Rás 1 how one tumor after the other had been found in his liver. Among them a huge tumor that was discovered during the surgery. A part of the liver was taken, but it will renew itself. In the twelve months since Stefán Karl was diagnosed with cancer, he has undergone surgery twice. "It of course comes as a great shock. You just go numb to begin with." He says it's weird to be in this position since only one in 100,000 get this type of cancer. "Of course I get it. I'm one of a kind."

-Stuck watching other people-

The cancer made him rethink his life and what he wanted to do. "Most people go within the first five years. All of a sudden you have to start rearranging and prioritize your life. What happens when the shock starts to go away and you pull up your pants - You start organizing what really matters and what doesn't."

The changes are many. For example, he has stopped taking part in discussions about politics and other negative things, which before had taken up a lot of his time. He says political discussion on the internet worries him. "I think we have just too little to do. We are hanging around on Facebook and reading each others' feeds. We are "stalkers", we are "stalking" each others' lives all day long and criticizing them. It's kind of like standing by your window: "Look how he's painting his house, he's painting it green, I'd never paint my house green." Except now you you have a platform and write from it on Facebook." He says people don't have to fall ill to see how sick that attitude is, but that the illness makes it so that he looks at life with different eyes than before.

-Death is incredibly insignificant-

"Many people ask me if I'm afraid to die. It's something that me and Steinunn have discussed alot. Death is such an incredibly insignificant thing, completely irrelevant, while life is so interesting and magnificent."

Stefán Karl says that people should smile and be thankful for existing. That it isn't so granted. That's why people shouldn't grieve if they maybe have little time left, but to enjoy being here. "Let's not cry and think "Woulda, coulda, shoulda", let's stop looking in the rear-view mirror and look ahead onto the road because that heals all wounds. When I woke up after my first surgery, which is one of the most serious and dangerous surgeries they do on the human body, the nurses looked at me and said: "Now you will have to go and heal yourself Stefán". That is one of the most profound things I have learned in my life." At that time, medicine had done all it could do and it was up to him to watch his body and mind.

-Rejoices over things that haven't happened-

"The only times I tear up is when I think of all the things I might possibly miss. I can't miss something that hasn't happened, but I think, for example, the idea of not getting to hold my grandchildren is incredibly sad. That's when I get really depressed. I probably won't be able to walk my daughters down the altar when they get married but I know they'll be in good hands. These are the only moments when I get sad, but I also smile thinking about that it will happen for them, hopefully and that hopefully they'll manage, like me, to have kids because it's so magnificent to become a parent. So I smile and get happy over things that haven't happened. Me and Steinunn discuss this very openly with our children."

Stefán Karl says that him and Steinunn had told their kids it was important to be honest about their feelings and let people know if they didn't want to talk about this if asked.

-Bikes 20 kilometers a day-

"I have recovered really fast and it's probably due to just getting up and exercising. Exercise is really key but you have to start slowly." said Stefán Karl who tries to bike at least 20 kilometers a day. He lifted weights regularly before his illness. At that time the goal was to build up muscle mass but now he's lost a lot of weight.

"I don't look at it like I received some death sentence even though I know that everything past the next two years of my life is a miracle. I look at it like we should be creating memories." says Stefán Karl. He says that people have to make the right choices about how to spend time with their children.

-Writing a stand-up routine about cancer-

Stefán Karl said at the radio show "Síðdegisútvarpið" that he was writing his first stand-up routine. "This stand-up revolves around cancer, which is funny." He says he's not doing it alone but has had help from stand-up comedian Ari Eldjárn writing it. "We're gonna start testing it in October and then I'll premiere it soon after New Years. I'm gonna make some fun of this."

It's important to be able to laugh at the illness. "Laughter doesn't exactly prolong your life but it makes it easier." Stefán Karl said that he had to learn to fart again after the surgery. He had at some times doctors and nurses standing over him asking him about the last time he farted and how. "There are a lot of things surrounding this that are hilarious."

It's incredible to read the thoughts of someone so positive. If you read the comments and posts in /r/me_irl or /r/comics it's a bunch of edgy "I hate myself and life sucks" baby stuff. But this man has conquered his own mind and dictates his own happiness. He chooses to focus on the good, even when the darkness creeps up. A truly inspirational article.

I honestly really hate such me_irl memes. I mean, jokes about not having any friends or being forever alone or whatever can sometimes be funny in moderation, but there's this whole circlejerk of people all claiming they wish they could never exist "lol I wish I was dead".

Not only is it seemingly so childish, but I feel like it detracts from actually suicidal people. Sure, there might be some actually depressed people trying to make light of their situation, but I feel like even if there is they're a tiny minority in a sea of people just trying to be a 'cool' internet emos who pretend to be suicidal for fun.

Edit: For those who are actually depressed and use this as a coping mechanism, I am sincerely sorry and simply wish you the best of luck.

JudasCrinitus · 71 points · Posted at 15:05:58 on August 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

I spend a lot of time on me_irl and 2meirl4meirl because I an earnestly suicidal and have been for some time and it gives me a modicum of peace to feel connected to everyone else in the same boat.

I want to do more to help but have no idea how. Please follow this link and browse this, for your own sake, as well as those around you. Don't be embarrassed to ask someone for help - no one will judge you for your illness.

zephyy · 58 points · Posted at 17:15:31 on August 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

I'm not OP but you're kidding yourself if the average suicidal person hasn't been linked to generic depression resources 100 times, either through their own searching or by other people.

Don't be embarrassed to ask someone for help - no one will judge you for your illness.

This is absolutely not true, a lot of people do look at you differently when you mention severe depression. People who suffer mental illness still suffer from the stigma around it, "it's all in your head" "it's not real" etc. etc.

redlaWw · 8 points · Posted at 17:34:03 on August 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

Well I'll link it again, in case they didn't feel like it last time they saw it but did this time. I guess you're right that some people might judge you, I should specify that I was referring to people one might be directed to for help.

Are you gatekeeping suicide? Jesus Christ thats low as fuck. Even if it was only 1 out of 10 me_irl users who were honestly considering it, why risk it by being a dick? What could you possibly have to gaim from writing this trash? "Actually suicidal", like you could possibly know someones intent over the internet. Go fuck yourself.

sharamall · 36 points · Posted at 14:46:27 on August 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

It reduces depression to a meme, minimizing empathy towards true suffering.

MibitGoHan · 55 points · Posted at 17:19:57 on August 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

Or,

It reduces depression and suicidal tendencies to a meme, giving those of us who suffer a chance to laugh and strength to keep going.

I mean me too thanks...

sharamall · 8 points · Posted at 17:29:26 on August 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

It may help in the moment, but it doesn't change the long term effects and it certainly doesn't convince those without depression that the meme producers need outside help. I'm not against these memes, I just don't find them productive. The other poster dislikes them.

When you're depressed and anxious like me literally nothing you do is productive.

sharamall · 1 points · Posted at 19:27:46 on August 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

That negative attitude is a symptom of depression. Depression only exists in the mind; you can reject it and be happy. I don't know how easy it is, as I am not a professional, but that attitude is exactly what Stefan rejects. After being faced with death, he learned the ability to control exactly how he feels, and that control is something that anyone can have. It isn't easy but it is feasible to change one's thoughts into positive ones and overcome depression.

A good way to start is to find ways where can be useful to someone else. This gives one's life value. It is rewarding to be relied on and then to deliver on that.

Q1189998819991197253 · 2 points · Posted at 19:31:07 on August 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

Depression is the least of my problems. Depression is what I feel in my downtime. Usually I'm instead plagued by panic which isn't something you can wish away like depression.

I have no energy to give anything to others. I'm either tuckered out from extreme adrenaline release all day or from just depression itself.

Been like this for 10 years. It's only gotten worse, even with therapy. I'm not taking medicine again.

sharamall · 2 points · Posted at 19:32:30 on August 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

Even with doctors the recovery rate for what I have is 10%. I don't see it happening. Literally the advice they give is to get to a support group. I don't want support. I want to be cured so I can live my god damn life. It doesn't matter if it's all in my head. It's real.

BagginsFrodo · 2 points · Posted at 19:32:26 on August 14, 2017 · (Permalink)

how does saying "oh i'm so sorry" with empathy effect the long term? tbh in stefans position i'd prefer people took the piss than moped around.

It's bile duct cancer, not liver cancer. It could be the medical term for it in Icelandic is similar to liver cancer, or it falls under a catchall term, since the liver is what produces bile.

felixorion · 5 points · Posted at 07:00:11 on August 14, 2017 · (Permalink)

He had cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the ducts between the liver and small intestine). Also, the cancer, being stage 4, had started metastasis (spread). Stefan noted on GoFundMe that they found a third met in his liver via sonar (I'm guessing some sort of ultra sound) and they removed it. That said, I think they used lifrarkrabbameini ("liver cancer") because his cancer is pretty rare and hard to explain, but liver cancer is not and it had already spread there. The Icelandic word for cholangiocarcinoma, I think, is kóleskrakakrabbamein or kálfakrabbamein, via Google, but not sure.

Once you get cancer, it never truly goes away. All you can hope for is for a good life before it shows up again.

I don't think that's quite true - I think it's more that we can't tell whether it's wholly gone or just hiding.

DrToadigerr · 12 points · Posted at 16:42:30 on August 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

That's a very general and mostly incorrect statement. I had Burkitt's Lymphoma in 5th grade (10 years ago), and like most other people with that form of cancer, have seen no signs of it returning. There are plenty of other cancers that are fairly easy (in the grand scheme) to get rid of for good. Of course, there's always a CHANCE of a relapse, but that doesn't mean it's never gone.

To say cancer "never truly goes away" is really just wrong, and I hope you don't ever tell that to anyone who has/had cancer.

phargmin · 5 points · Posted at 18:56:29 on August 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

Hematologic malignancy =/= solid malignancy. The Lazy Town guy's Stage IV means that it will never go away. I made a post in /r/dankmemes explaining it. He is not cured - he bought himself a few months to a year or so. He has no evidence of disease after his treatment, which is typical, and does not mean cured.

DrToadigerr · 2 points · Posted at 22:47:48 on August 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

Oh yeah I know in this case specifically it won't, I'm not arguing that. But u/guto8797 said "Once you get cancer, it never truly goes away," which is very much untrue to say of "cancer" in such a general sense.

Sigmundschadenfreude · 18 points · Posted at 13:21:48 on August 13, 2017 · (Permalink)

based on the limited information available, the cancer was stage IV (metastatic) but had only spread to one or two spots that were visible. This is also called oligometastatic disease. In some cancer types, oligometastatic disease can be (rarely) cured, but definitely controlled for a period of time, by applying treatments for local control like radiation or surgery as part of the overall treatment plan.

The downside being that when you go after these spots, you only see what you can see. It's impossible to see any individual cancer cells hiding out in the body, only the big lumps of cells (tumors), so people have to be watched closely with scans over time in case little hiding cells grow and multiply and become visible. People really don't try to use the term cure unless you get about 5 years out without recurrence

You said people have to be monitored with scans - Is that mostly PET (FDG) scans or are there other options?

Sigmundschadenfreude · 1 points · Posted at 00:14:06 on August 14, 2017 · (Permalink)

It varies by cancer type. Sometimes PET and CT scans are alternated for reasons of cost. Other cancer types are not very noticeable on PET and so you rely entirely on CT scans. Some cancers like prostate cancer will get symptom-driven bone scans as well.

They said that it was a real rare disease and that the cancer was in his final stadium. So, call it a miracle.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 08:03:10 on August 14, 2017 · (Permalink)

Yes and no, to be precise it was in a stage where chance of 5-year survival was low. It was stage 4 bile-duct cancer and in general bile duct cancer is a form of cancer that is on the low-end spectrum of survival rate. Stage 4 means that cancer has spread well outside the organ it originated from. So that means statistically his 5-year survival rate would've been less than 5%.

Survival rates of different types of cancer vary a lot by the way: Malignant melanoma on the skin is like 90%, the most common type of breast cancer about the same. While lung cancer can be as low as 10%. Those are global averages and not corrected by staging.

vezokpiraka · 3 points · Posted at 13:46:35 on August 14, 2017 · (Permalink)

He had around 1% to 5% chances of living more than 3 months. This was a month or so ago. I consider that very close to death's bed.

Right now there is no sign of cancer in his body. Although the most likely possibility is that the cancer will reappear we cannot know for sure either way. So right now we can consider him cured (not really for life, because that's impossible to claim)

So both statements you claimed reddit has spread around are almost true, except you exagerrated them to make it seem redsit was misleading.

At least with your liver is that you can cut off a piece of the tumor and still have about 50% function. The best part of the liver is that it's the ONLY organ that can grow back.

Cycling 20 miles a day, or trying to, sounds amazing. But it is a low-impact way of rebuilding muscle compared to weightlifting or such, and it must feel immensely freeing to be out in the open air after months in a hospital. I hope he stays in the clear for a good long while.

Sadly, this is one of the cruelest fake news I've seen in a while, Not only is this fake, but his cancer has reached stage 4, That means any and all treatment given to him now is for the purpose of making his remaining days less horrible. There is no getting better, and improving condition anymore. He will die in less than two years.
