I hate the fact that white is the default color on the Internet, even if you are loading a page that it's not, but while it's loading it's white.

Good point. I feel like it was white because of CRT displays and paper to make it familiar, bit this is no longer 1995.

It is like that because originally people did not use internet from their dark basements, but from workspace with proper lights.
If anything, first monitors were actually using black background and switched to light themes over time.
As a person with long history of eye problems and wearing eyeglasses, claims of dark themes being better for your eyes are mostly misconceptions that comes from testing things in improperly setup workspace.
Both themes have their uses, but claims of light theme being bad come not from issues with light theme, but from issues with physical light in your room.
If people would stop using PCs while lurking in darkest areas of their living space they would notice difference instantly.
For example I have windows in my room, and my windows are brighter then my monitor can do with plain white image.
Claims that dark themes are solution is like claiming that people should be working and living in the evenings when there is less light, because day is to bright. But that's not where human evolution took us, we are day creatures.

A few weeks ago I tried to look for a solution but it's not as easy as it seems.

Reddit light theme too

esuil ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 11:23:54 on March 31, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

If you have issues with light themes it means that your workspace lights and monitors are setup badly and you need to reconsider environment you work\play in.
The only way it will cause high strain on your eyes and such is when surrounding lights are non properly adjusted to your monitors.
Instead of doing half assed measures of "I will be using dark themes because light ones suck for my eyes" people should look at the core of the problem and create proper environment for themselves.
I know this is joke and all that, but this is real problem that can cause health issues for eyes in long run.
Edit: Also, if bright white color can cause strain and issues for your eyes, something is totally wrong. Your equipment should be setup in a way that makes it impossible for damage or discomfort be done just by image on your monitor. In other words your setup should be in a way that no matter what happens you will be comfortable with it. If you need to be adjusting theme to dark just to avoid damage to your eyes, it means that your current setup works in a way that allows for it to do damage to your eyes. That screams "this is wrong" to me. If your monitor is capable of showing white, you should only be looking on that monitor if you are confident that your monitor showing white wont do any damage. If it does, your setup is wrong and unhealthy.

I actually used to use the light theme, then I swapped to the dark theme.

Now I have no idea how I could stand the brightness of the light theme...

I don't get what's with the light theme. I turned it on once but it only made everything darker

immethecat ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:18:22 on March 31, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

it would help if the developers actually cared about making a useful light theme that didnโ€™t just reskin part of the interface into a bright white color with no thought put into design
