Awesome! Are we able to request movies to be added so we can purchase? If so, my first would be Interstellar followed by The Matrix.

Prez__Underwood ยท 230 points ยท Posted at 06:46:32 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The matrix would be 50 shades of green probably

The first Matrix actually wasn't that green-everywhere. It had its color scheme altered on later video releases to match those of its sequels.

RockLoi ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 08:12:03 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The green tint is in the matrix, the real world has a blue tint. I'd be interested to see how it comes out.

Here you go!

XYcritic ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 10:12:01 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

What's the added dimension compared to op's pictures? Some stripes change color on the same X-point.

NeuronalMassErection ยท 50 points ยท Posted at 11:55:07 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

These ones are compressing the frames to 1 pixel wide and putting them next to each other. OP was taking the average color of each frame, making a 1 pixel line of consistent color, and putting those next to each other. OP looks better, IMO.

XYcritic ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 12:07:01 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

So each pixel per Y-coordinate (of the output) is an average of the X-vector at that point (of the input)? It's a nice idea as well. Maybe one could also use gradients between frames at the same point to magnify color intensities. Might be an idea.

PM_ME_OR_PM_ME ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 14:51:59 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Are you trying to get a "relevant username" comment?

Cause this is how you get a "relevant username" comment.

XYcritic ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:43:33 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Heh didn't even notice. I picked a difficult username so I'm gonna cherish this moment a bit.

PM_ME_OR_PM_ME ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:29:57 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Welp, just keep going around making critical comments about those X's and Y's.

Edit: Also, I'm pretty sure each frame just has the color of each pixel visible averaged then that is added as a 1px vertical line. Doesn't necessarily have to be averaged per line of frame.

Biggity_Niggity ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 13:06:20 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Hero (2002) with Jet Li would probably be really cool. They're use of color throughout the movie was wonderful.

paynehouse ยท 19 points ยท Posted at 07:13:48 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Hey OP, I think this would be very helpful for people writing film reviews. For example I'm writing a review for a documentary right now for my English class and one of the aspects of the paper involves describing the colors used and why they were used. I'm not sure how you made these, but I think they'd be really helpful. How long does it take you to make one?

thingshappen-xuras ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:19:39 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Hey, I've made one of these a few years back which uses similar techniques. I can't speak for how fast his is, but the one I made takes about 1-2 minutes to skip through the film and average the frames. I've not got the program to hand or in a working state at the moment, but I'm sure I could make it work for you if you need it. It's on Windows though.

AnOldPhilosopher ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:47:27 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Someone said that the ones you just looked at are each frame squeezed into a 1px bar and put next to eachother, whereas OPโ€™s stuff is an average of the colours in a frame, which is then put into a 1px bar and assembled. I agree, Theyโ€™re both cool but OPs are great wall art.

Very clever. Might I suggest you consider providing a service in which people can choose up to X (3 or 4, I guess) that can be stacked on top of each other? This would do for trilogies, for instance. Another thought is that you could second guess a lot of these and make a few of your own choice to test the idea.

Personally, I'd like a chart with 50 or more, each with their titles and year of production in small print off to the side. Have people new to it guess the films based solely on that representation.

Edit: Dude, do a few by director. They've gotta sell.

Wouldn't the argument be that it is movie memorabilia and thus is too similar to the studios own memorabilia to be sold with their trademark? The confusion would be that it is authentic studio licensed merchandise.

lolrestoshaman ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 08:10:54 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Except it's not movie memorabilia, even if they tried to argue it. I can take quotes from a movie and arrange then into a typographical design in some way related to the film and sell it if I wanted because it is a creative work based on another work, allowing it to fall under fair use and creative commons.

This is something similar; all OP has done is take a color representative of each frame of a film and condense it to a single gradient representation. In this case, OP is using their own creation based on film(s) but in no way representing or detracting from the film itself.

Stanford University notes that fair use "is any copying of copyrighted material done for a limited and โ€œtransformativeโ€ purpose, such as to comment upon, criticize, or parody a copyrighted work. Such uses can be done without permission from the copyright owner." OP is using the color palette of the frames of the film in this same transformative means to comment upon the film, notably commenting on the primary color of each frame of the film collectively.

Cumberlandjed ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 11:24:44 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

By contending that other organizations create confusion and capitalize on komen's work, that is that people think they are donating to the komen foundation because of the word "cure" or the color pink

QuintusVS ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 11:43:13 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

VapingSmooth ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:59:03 on November 5, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I mean just pulling the avg color of each frame would not yield any infringement on copywritten material. The way MBC could argue that it's still their work.

iamPause ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:40:56 on November 5, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I'd done a very similar visualization several years ago in grad school! Super-cool to see people are making these.

One of the other graduate students got a necktie version for our adviser. When he was giving a talk at AFI Jon Favreau asked about it so my adviser sent him one of Iron Man.

Two people CAN have the same idea. I mean, all the ideas ever are just sitting there, waiting to be taken. But when you take one it's still there for someone else to take. So like, they're not lying on the ground, they're on infinitely bountiful trees and you can take them all you want. And copyright and trademark laws are like guards that keep you from harvesting from the ones that are owned.

Idea trees. With bodyguards. This is what happens when I try to make a post ten minutes after waking up.

I took it as an average of each sliver of the screen. Then I started to notice how some films had similarities e.g Nemo, Moonrise and GBH all have two darker regions at about 30% and 60%. I thought maybe that was how the characters were symmetrically positioned in each scene..

Then I saw /u/BobbyCock's comment and this got way cooler and made more sense!

[deleted] ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 07:41:04 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I don't think so tbh, because the colour scheme before that is all pale beiges and whites, which is probably the climax where it took place in the dentist's office. The aforementioned mossy colour scheme occurs when marlin and nemo both get flushed down the drain

maverick_fillet ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 08:13:10 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Oh you're talking about the darker green, I though you were talking about the bright green. I'm pretty sure the bright green is the fish tank, then the dark area afterwards is when they're in the whale, the beige area is the dentist's office and the darkish green is the sewage filled water ghetto where Nemo gets flushed to.

Also because it is the average of the shot, you will never get the most distinctive color. For you should use the median.

Haizan ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 08:29:06 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

How would you get the median over color vectors? You could find the medians for each component. But then I'd guess you would get different results depending on the chosen color space.

m4n031 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 08:49:19 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I guess that if you want the most distinctive color what you really want is the mode of the scene, but I guess with all the little irregularities this might not be practical. Maybe if you cluster all pixels by color, and get the centroid of the biggest cluster

jjolla888 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 10:42:26 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

there are an infinite number of algorithms you can chose .. how about this one : transform every pixel to the "closest" color on an agreed rainbow. then take the median of this one dimensional array.

many ways to define what we mean by close, suggest you just leverage off the definition op used to calculate mean

apullin ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 17:42:45 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Digitize the movie, and then the color are quantized. There will be a lot of them, though, so you would do all the standard movie tricks, like subsampling the luminance value. You could also take a color space, divide it up into regions that are perceptually similar and reduce it to just 1000 or so colors, and bin all the colors with those regions. You could maybe use a reference set of color centers from Pantone, and generate the regions by a Voronoi diagram.

It would be pretty interesting to see a blog post about how this is coded up, actually.

[deleted] ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 06:50:13 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ etherealpenguin ยท 655 points ยท Posted at 04:39:14 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

I was inspired by the Movie Bar Codes posted to reddit earlier, and wanted to write a program that creates a cleaner final product focusing solely around color choices. I created this program using Processing to code it in Java. Instead of compressing full frames into single lines, my version compiles it by the average color of each frame. (Longer movies have overlapping lines to fit in the same dimensions.) The result is a smooth spectrum of color that I think turned out pretty great!

If you've got any suggestions for movies to use, let me know. I'm also posting my favorites to my online portfolio - if you're interested check there as well for new movies!

Wow, thanks for all the positive feedback! Since so many people asked, I made some full-size renders available for print at http://www.artpal.com/filmspectrum. Starting at $10 for 20 inch prints!

SkunktimusPrime ยท 105 points ยท Posted at 05:59:19 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I'm going to try to figure out how OP and such are doing this and I'll make the information I discover public. I'll report back once I figure it out, not saying it's going to be tomorrow but I'll look into it.

my_very_first_alt ยท 68 points ยท Posted at 10:49:38 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

i can tell you how.

  1. he took the average color of every frame in a movie, then
  2. compressed them into a single picture

if you don't know how to program, you need to start there. if you know how, you're going to want to look up ffmpeg and something like imagemagick.

found this site, which does the same thing: http://thecolorsofmotion.com. their about page has an even more detailed breakdown, which is essentially:

  1. write a script that uses ffmpeg to export each frame of your video as an image ... f(movie) = images
  2. write a script that reads a series of images, returning their average colors ... f(images) = colors
  3. write a script that takes a series of colors, and outputs an image using imagemagick ... f(colors) = image

edit: this is why OP asked for "open source". ie. a working version of the program you could use and/or modify. to be honest, the implementation is so novel and simple that i would be surprised if an open source or user friendly version doesn't pop up very soon.

Malsententia ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 14:07:12 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I might take a whack at this later today. ffmpeg and imagemagick are my jam. If I do though, I probably won't bother with the whole real-time watching-it-happen thing he describes below.

GLneo ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 14:40:02 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Right, he looks like he does it with a screen grabber, then just plays the movie with a player, you could just get the data right from the stream data with ffmpeg.

filthy_harold ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:50:16 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Use an svg library like Baltik instead of imagemagick so you can easily scale the image.

Malsententia ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 15:36:35 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Ooh worth looking into. My main concern, off the top of my head with imagemagick, is if I want to be picky and and ensure every frame is taken into account for the final result, that'd probably require either grouping frames and creating averages of those, or scaling down a huge image. An SVG base might solve that problem, though it'll be interesting to see the rendering overhead for an svg with so many objects. Though there might be a better way to do it. I'm imagining a document with a rect for every single frame, so 100000+

my_very_first_alt ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:44:29 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

also worth noting that i paraphrased the details of thecolorsofmotion.com -- for the sake of making one possible implementation easier to explain.

this site actually just exports the colors as JSON, which are then rendered on the client side. this is a cool option because it gives you ultimate flexibility and the ability to integrate with whatever renderer you want.

filthy_harold ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:32:37 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Browsers choke at like 5k elements so I don't know how hard it would be to process an image with that much stuff but we aren't displaying it, just converting it to a PNG of whatever size. Maybe instead have the size of the PNG be an argument for the program so we skip the svg part entirely.

this site is amazing. you can click on each color bar and see the frame that generated it.

Your post so so verbose, and yet not helpfull at all.

You want to g to the moon, I can tell you how:

1) Build rocket.

2) Fly to Moon.

If you have never built a rocket, start there.

If you have a rocket, then learn aerodynamics and and something like rocket fuel.

Sometime people want to see the details becasue that's what they are interested in, and seeing the detail is what motivates them to learn..

Not staring a blank text editor in an ide.

my_very_first_alt ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 15:40:26 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

if you are an even remotely competent programmer, the post explains exactly what it needs to.

if you are not a programmer, you could have stopped at "if you don't know how to program, you need to start there". even still, i was considerate enough to explain that an open source or user friendly version should be available soon. not to mention- my post actually gives a pretty cool insight into how a programmer would break this type of problem down into smaller problems, hopefully turning some new people on to programming by showing how you can apply it to real tasks.

if you fall into some weird void that is a third option, like you apparently, you are welcome to ask specific questions and i can elaborate. that was my intent. i'm not sure why you didn't take that opportunity, instead of bitching. i'm not going to write the fucking program for you in a Reddit post.

UsingYourWifi ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 18:37:38 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Covering all that, including how to program, is far beyond the scope of a reddit comment.

architrave ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 08:33:03 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

There are actually progams you can use to do it, like this one, but OP's is a little different as it is just the colour and not the frame.

dhvanil ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:31:51 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Turns out I did a very similar project sometime back.

Here is the link: http://dhvanil.com/portfolio/movie-mosaics.html

At the bottom you can find a few links. I used k-means clustering to find the dominant color of the frame. And I ripped of individual frames using VLC (yes, it is surprisingly versatile.) It also has a folder where I put the raw code, frames, colors etc. It is pretty hackish and unrefined (in my defence, I was pretty noobish back then)

Hit me up, if you want any more help.

germanbuddhist ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:47:21 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I wrote a quick and dirty script in MATLAB for a similar post last year, but instead of averaging each frame to an individual color, it averages all the frames into a single picture. This might be a good jumping off point

https://np.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/22fsve/wrote_a_script_to_average_each_frame_of_popular/cgnslfr?context=10000

[deleted] ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 11:28:08 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

I made a little python script to do this (using openCV). It's quite slow though, so full movies will takes quite a bit of time:

https://gist.github.com/anonymous/7905f309ec7d17b4784c

edit: Here's a script that does just solid colour per frame, not lines of colour: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/b45a9b7fd95b79c49fe0

edit2: I ran the script on Star Wars IV, 1080p image result: https://imgur.com/qt4KJVv

CentaurOfDoom ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:52:23 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

How can I save that and run it...? (Sorry... The coding I know is HTML, CSS, and a tiny, tiny bit of javascript).

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:08:25 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Depends on what operating system. To run it, you'll need opencv (apt-get install libopencv-dev python-opencv, http://opencv.org/), and python2 (installed by default on ubuntu, https://www.python.org/).

Then you'll edit the script to put in the correct video file path, and output image path, and output image size that you want.

To run it is a simple python script.py

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:57:13 on November 9, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Hmm, well that's interesting. It's difficult to debug without having the same video file that's causing the problems, but maybe you could skip the squishing step? It would result in very wide images for long videos though, but maybe it is worth a try:

[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 10:31:47 on November 11, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I'm not sure for windows, but you can start by downloading an installing Python 2 (not 3), (https://www.python.org/downloads/), and opencv (http://opencv.org/).

Then you can edit the script with the correct path for the video file, save, and double click should run it.

LetsWorkTogether ยท 64 points ยท Posted at 09:15:05 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I disagree, I find OP's to be significantly more aesthetically pleasing.

BenedictoCharleston ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:00:43 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Yes but you're getting less of the actual true color in OP's version. The compression retains the actual value of the frames of the scene, where as OP's just gives you an average color. If there's a scene that has an odd array of colors you're going to end up with much less pleasing piece of the poster for something that may have turned out beautiful if it had been compressed.

Similar, yes of course. But far from the same.

Nayr747 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 20:00:10 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Well not exactly the same but very similar. Other than fading near the edges, being stretched out, and more uniform color bands, I can't tell them apart.

Barneyk ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:11:32 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Really? That is kind of interesting, because the difference is huge to me. Like, seriously huge.

Look at the pattern I circled here: http://i.imgur.com/S9bwHM7.jpg

And then compare the same place here: https://i.imgur.com/OjmSWka.jpg

OPs pictures are all vertical lines and no horizontal patterns what so ever, the barcodes have a lot of horizontal patterns to them.

To make one example that makes them look so different...

LetsWorkTogether ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:57:27 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I agree, they're very different in my eyes. One I wouldn't mind hanging up on my wall as art or giving as a gift, the other I wouldn't even think of it.

Rose94 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:00:13 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

That's because OP's is the average color, whereas the barcodes are every frame squished to 1px wide. I prefer movie barcodes because to me they tell more story but I really like OP's style as well.

This is a beautiful website. Wow.

creepyeyes ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 07:57:36 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

OP created his own algorithm to get the same effect as these ones, so it is original content, but not an original idea. This person has been doing them for far longer and uses a slightly different technique that squishes the frames instead of averaging them.

LetsWorkTogether ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 09:15:53 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

It's not quite the same effect, just similar. They're noticeably different.

Timothy_Vegas ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 11:33:32 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

OP's explanation

I was inspired by the Movie Bar Codes posted to reddit earlier, and wanted to write a program that creates a cleaner final product. Instead of compressing full frames into single lines, my version takes each frame's average color and draws a corresponding line. (Longer movies have overlapping lines to fit in the same dimensions.) The result is a much smoother spectrum of color that I think turned out pretty great!

Nice work! But you should be able to calculate one of these much faster than real time. An ordinary $500 PC can probably do it about 8x speed, and if you use the right GPU decoding you might get 20x or more. Even faster if you use low-res copies of the movie so there's less disk I/O!

Edit: And, more importantly, could you answer this question once and for all?

[deleted] ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 07:39:32 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Yes, I very much want to know what "average colour" means too. Mean, mode or median? Something else?

ElectroMonsta ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 11:00:16 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I don't think he takes the average of the colors. The easiest way to do it would take the most common color on each frame. So on the first frame if there is more red than anything else it would be red.

Philias ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 14:41:31 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Taking the most common color (the mode) is not going to work. For each color component (assuming RGB colorspace) you have 256 possible values. That makes for a total of 2563 , about 17 million, possible colors. At 1080p resolution you have about 2 million pixels. If the colors are distributed evenly (which of course they aren't) you're unlikely to see the same exact color show up more than once per frame. But given that colors aren't distributed randomly each specific color might turn up a handful of times per frame maybe. I can't imagine that being very reliable though.

incredibadass ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 13:32:19 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I'm not op but I'll take a shot.

Each pixel has a colour that's displayed, represented by 3 numerical values for Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) which each range from 0-255. So the colour for each pixel can be represented by some combination of ( 0-255, 0-255, 0-255 )

To get the average you take the value for each pixel add each colour separately and divide by the number of pixels on the screen. Probably...

Timothy_Vegas ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 14:27:42 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I don't think OP calculated it like this. It would mean all results tend to be in the area of the most average color of all and there are a lot saturated colors in his results.

[deleted]

Timothy_Vegas ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:12:30 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I didn't say you would get grey as a result. All results would lean towards grey, and wouldn't be as saturated as OP's.

Even when red is dominant, there will be yellow, green, blue, ... in the frame, which lowers the saturation of the average.

Meltz014 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 16:54:19 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Exactly - it'd be like taking the average of a sine wave: 0.

strallus ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 07:37:27 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Donโ€™t know how OP did it but to just take the mode

ijustwantanfingname ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 14:52:59 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

You average each color channel independently. Color in videos and photos is often represented as a set of 3 numbers, each number ranging from 0-255. Pure red is [255,0,0], green is [0,255,0], and blue is [0,0,255]. Every other color is some other weighting of numbers.

Here, each frame in a movie is one vertical line of color. that color is [R,G,B], where R is the average of all red channels in the frame, G is the average of all green channels in the frame, and B is the average of all blue channels in the frame. At least, that's what the title suggests. Whether this is actually what they did, I have no idea.

InsomniacDuck ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:12:41 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The image is way too saturated for that to be the case

ijustwantanfingname ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 16:18:20 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

He could have played with the saturation for the finished image, just like how he added the shadowing near top and bottom. But I agree, I don't think this was actually "color averaging".

DarQraven ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:57:51 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I was wondering this as well. With an average, some of the more vivid colors would mean that basically the entire screen is neon green or barbie pink. Maybe that was actually the case, but I find it hard to imagine.

oddgoat ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 08:32:38 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I'm not OP, but looking at the image my guess is this: I think he takes the average of 30-ish frames before and 30-ish frames after each frame, but samples from the image, not the true movie frames. If you notice, the top and bottom of the images are darker, which I assume is because the averaging is sampling 'off image' and getting black as the result. So the top and bottom area of pixels end up mixing in blacks into their averages at increasing rates.

[deleted] ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 11:40:24 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The top and bottom are darker only for aesthetic reasons. All he did was apply a black vignette filter to the final rendered image.

oddgoat ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 11:57:21 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Couple of points:

1) That's not what a vignette filter looks like - similar but different enough to be worth mentioning.

2) If you look at the pic OP posted in another comment, you can see the darkening is happening in real-time with the process. Whether or not this is a deliberate aesthetic darkening or part of the sampling as I suggested, only OP can answer.

[deleted] ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 11:35:36 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I really doubt his algorithm is taking the mean (the average) of the colors. More likely the algorithm picks the most dominant color per given frame(s). It's literally a matter of tallying pixels and their colors and seeing which color occurs most frequently (this is referred to as "mode", not average). Though averaging may come into play when it comes to condensing the dominant colors of multiple frames into one single pixel wide slit of this barcode.

Kalamari1 ยท -4 points ยท Posted at 08:13:13 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I would guess op takes the hex code of every pixel and then averages them out

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:16:34 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

What's your process? I like how it looks

rocketmonkee ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 15:25:03 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

My process is as follows:

  1. Configure VLC to play the movie and capture every Nth frame. I typically capture every 96th frame, which seems to work pretty well for an average length movie.

  2. Run a batch process in Photoshop to take each frame, apply a light gaussian blur to smooth out the color, then resize to 3 pixels wide. Blurring and resizing (rather than cropping) results in a 3 pixel wide slice that has the predominant color of the frame, but also has slight variations from some of the other hues and values.

  3. Use Imagemagick to take all the slices, stack them together, and export a PNG. I can then use Photoshop to manipulate the PNG in any way if needed.

Other people use Imagemagick for all the frame manupulation, and still others use entirely different processes. But this is how I do it. I like the control that I have over some of the steps, and I've been happy with the results so far.

Some technical notes:

By averaging, do you mean you use arithematic averages? Due to perceptual luminosity scaling, averaging works much better when converted out of RGB to Lab or HSL space or at the very least as an approximation, squared before averaging.

Also, how does it look if, instead of averaging the whole frame and drawing a line of the same pixel value, only horizontal pixels are averaged across so that the vertical axis actually still shows the vertical axis of the image?

Herover ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:21:24 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Sukrim ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:24:33 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Maybe you could calculate your average per line each frame? Meaning if you have a dark wood and a blue sky in a frame, the upper part of that frame's stripe would be blue, and the lower part would be dark.

Also you could first check how many frames a movie has, then how many pixels in horizontal resolution you want to generate and then average together more than one frame if necessary.

At 25 frames per second a 90 minute movie will have 135,000 frames. If you're sampling every single frame, you're going to need an image at least 135,000 pixels wide to fit all that data. Obviously you're not doing that, so how do you go about it?

I'm guessing you're hinting at it here:

and draws a corresponding line in that color. (Longer movies have overlapping lines to fit in the same dimensions.)

but I'm not following entirely.

If anyone is interested in how to make this yourself, you don't need a fancy program. This method is faster then OPs, because it can be faster than real time (but it uses disk space).

(This is the command line guide, so it may require advanced knowledge)

You just need to install ffmpeg, and imagemagick.

Edit: See barracuda415's improved version below![1]

My version:

  1. First, get the average color out of each frame in a video and save each one as a .png file.

    ffmpeg -i <your movie file> -vf scale=1:1 -r 1 <output folder>/%06d.png

  2. Using imagemagick, merge all the colors together

    convert +append <output folder>/* out.png

  3. Scale the output to the desired height

    mogrify -scale x50\! out.png

Bingo!

How can I make each pixel in the line the average of just that line (instead of scaling up the overall average)?

barracuda415 ยท 28 points ยท Posted at 11:05:03 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

Here's a quick one-liner for recent ffmpeg versions:

ffmpeg -i <input> -filter:v "select=not(mod(n\,<step>)),setpts=N/(FRAME_RATE*TB),scale=1:<height>" -f image2pipe -c:v ppm - | convert ( +append - ) -resize <width>x<height>! <output>
  • <input>: Video file.
  • <step>: Number of frames to skip after calculating a column. Usually between 25 - 100, depending on the length of the video. For best results, use <number of frames> / <width> / 2.
Warning: if this value is set too low, ImageMagick may attempt to create huge temporary files and clog your RAM, so use this with caution!
  • <width>: Bar code width in pixels.
  • <height>: Bar code height in pixels.
  • <output>: Bar code image file.

It's pretty fast and doesn't generate temporary files, at least not in the working directory. You may want to convert it to a script file of your language, like Shell or Bash for better usability. To use the average color of the entire frame like above, use scale=1:1 instead of scale=1:<height>.

Edit: updated with support for supersampling

Edit 2: Python script for easy usage[1]

[deleted] ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 19:47:22 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Tested, this works great. I saw the ppm approach on the forums but I didn't think it would work.

If you just want to output 1 frame a second you can use the -r 1 option which is simpler then the filter mess:

ffmpeg -i <video> -filter:v "scale=1:<height>" -f image2pipe -r 1 -c:v ppm - | convert +append - <output>

or for the one average per line:

ffmpeg -i <video> -filter:v "scale=1:1" -f image2pipe -r 1 -c:v ppm - | convert +append -scale x<height>\! - <output>
barracuda415 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:39:22 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I thought -r is ignored when outputting images? Still, I think the select filter is better when you calculate the step in a script from the number of frames in the video. There doesn't seem to be a constant for the total number of frames in the filter parameter, so it's a bit tricky to get constant image widths from different videos.

RoryW ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:21:01 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

In case anyone is looking for an example from this script. I made this image of the Lego Movie with the code above, but with -r 0.5 in order to get a less wide image.

Xenrin ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:07:18 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Hmm... I spent a few hours of poking around trying to get any of the three commands working properly. Got rid of most of the errors but all of them die abruptly with:

av_interleaved_write_frame(): Invalid argument
Error writing trailer of pipe:: Invalid argumentframe=    1 fps=0.0 q=-0.0 Lsize=       0kB time=00:

(Full command dump here).

Is there something obvious I'm missing?

[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 07:27:27 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

Yeah, the thing you are missing is that you are on windows so the pipe | operator won't work. Edit: Might work. Simply use my approach at the top of this comment tree that uses the temporary files. Note that windows treats the "*" operator a bit differently, so it might work but I'm not sure. Hopefully!

You can also use cygwin on windows which uses a special terminal which lets you use the pipe operator.

Xenrin ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 19:05:47 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Thanks, that fixed it. I wasn't aware Windows cmd didn't take pipe operators. Clearly I use the Windows command line even less than Unix :P

However, when I was executing the last section of code that you provided it kept saying the x50\! argument was invalid. Changing it to

mogrify -scale x50! out.png

fixed the problem. Not sure if that's also a weird Windows thing, or if that was just a typo.

Does this create an image in OP's style (minus shading) or moviebarcode's style - are the vertical bands solid colour?

barracuda415 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:47:29 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The bars only have solid colors if you use scale=1x1, otherwise they contain the horizontal average of that frame.

ForceBlade ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:55:49 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I have like thousands of the popular A ranking movies (like those featured in this post) on my NAS [all totally legit I promise...] and I could start doing a heap if people like.

I'll get one of my servers onto it and probably just do a "for, in" bash loop and check back on the server in a week haha

barracuda415 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:58:21 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Should be no problem. On my machine, it takes about 2-5 minutes for an average movie. Movies with high frame rate may take longer, since ffmpeg has to skip more frames after each sample.

But I would recommend to calculate <step> automatically in a script based on the number of frames, so the quality remains constant. I could try to create a Python script that is ready to use, if you like.

ForceBlade ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:11:54 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah, but

What if info it for every frame

barracuda415 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:51:56 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I need the total number of frames, not the current frame index, that's the problem.

barracuda415 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:34:08 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Okay, here's the Python implementation. This should be easier to use, since it calculates the step value automatically now.

SpehlingAirer ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:12:18 on November 8, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

When I try this script I keep getting "filterSize is too large" errors. How do do this with HD footage? Can you please provide an example of this being used with the input variables filled in?

barracuda415 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:23:19 on November 8, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

If you want the default settings for a 1280x480 bar, it should be enough to supply the video path to the script and it should create an image with the same name as the video. I've tested it with 1080p videos with no issues. What does ffmpeg -version say for you? I'm using a fairly recent git snapshot N-71192-g3c91239, but I'd say any build from 2.x should work.

juliand665 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 11:33:24 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

That's different from what we want though, it just averages the lines; in this post (as opposed to the earlier one), entire frames are compressed into one line of color, and there's a nice vignette effect over it all.

barracuda415 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 11:33:25 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

How much disc space does an average 120min movie take?

tombsar ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:56:54 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

To store the movie on disk? Usually 1-2GB depending on what compression you use.

To store the 1x1 pixel pngs? No idea, so I'll make a guess: I think 4kB is the smallest possible file on most systems, so 4kB per frame * 30 frames per second * 60 seconds per minute * 120 minutes = 864MB.

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 16:41:20 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Its 90 bytes a frame or 120(min)*60(sec)*24(frames)*90(bytes)/1024(kb)/1024(mb)=14.83 mb total

Nastapoka ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:47:40 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

-i is "input", it's your input file. -vf is for "video filter", you want the filter "scale" and you want the result to be just 1 pixel x 1 pixel (1:1). Then you stretch this thin bar.

Kerbal_NASA ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 19:03:48 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

For every horizontal line of pixels across the whole frame he averaged the pixel's colour. He did that for every frame. Then he grouped the frames together and averaged those values so that each pixel represented an equal amount of frames as other pixels. This is most clearly visible if you look at the beginning (far left) of the Stars Wars picture that represents the famous yellow text which scrolls and fades into the distance. There's a little bit of an upward slope at the top because it takes awhile for the intro text to reach the fade off point.

Yeah, a 90-minute movie at 24 frames per second would make an image that's 129,600 pixels wide, which these aren't. Not a big deal, but something that bugs me every time this is posted, add they always say "every frame" instead of just "the average color of famous movies".

Are these really the true average? They seem representative of how we might perceive a frame, however to really be averages from a technical point of view, these feel like they are very saturated. Is this the average hue/similar at full saturation? That seems likely, and probably what you meant, rather than "the average of every pixel" as I was thinking at first.

TheGoldenHand ยท 27 points ยท Posted at 06:15:46 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

DontYouMeanHAHAHAHA ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 06:47:44 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

There's no such thing as a mathematical 'true average' but I assume you're working with RGB - maybe as you said it's the average in HSB/HSL. That means not necessarily full saturation but the average saturation.

larperdoodle ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 07:58:57 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

If each picture is 6255 pixels wide, and each column is a frame, then that would mean these pictures only represent about 3.5 minutes of actual content...?

barracuda415 ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 12:08:58 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

You could put the average color of every frame into each column for the final image, but that would be a waste of time and space. Normally, it's enough to sample one in every 50 to 100 frames.

shmorgie7 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 13:42:07 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Op mentioned above that his program figures out the color, and then just draws a line in that same color. It's not each frame condensed, just a line representing it.

That's my question too, everyone here is excited but it's the kind of post I see once in a while with some slight variations, I don't care enough to do all the researches but to me it feels like OP just took some concept and started making sweet karma and money out of it.

The fact that there is no rhyme or reason to arrangement of the movies on that site makes me unnecessarily angry. Also as you scroll down the cursor hits the image and the pop up over the image hides the color.

How are you calculating the 'average color'? Average hex value of every pixel in the frame?

ericGraves ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 14:18:18 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Exactly my question. Naturally you would want it as an average of the wavelength associated with the color. But hex value would be easiest. It would also be interesting to see the mode color as well.

Without knowing the averaging method it is impossible to know what we are looking.

A professor at my university does a ton of these!

Here is his website

He also has videos of tons of frames playing at once, and does things like giving each frame a coordinate on a sphere based on it's coordinates or something crazy like that.

Also..there will be an android app (and eventually ios if i remember correctly) sometime next year where you are able to play games guessing various movies.

There's also a guide on how to create your own on his site!

BenedictoCharleston ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 12:15:09 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Although his is still cool, I'm not sure I like his version. When scaled up into a 30x10in poster or canvas for example, his method would look less like an artistic product because he does lines of sequences of frames instead of one line per frame. Even just 'expanding the image' on the website you can see all the little squares already.

It's interesting to observe where they stuck to a similar pallet of colors like Aladin or Moonrise Kingdom and where they spread further out across colors that work well together (I had a few courses in color theory in college but it's been too long to tell you why these particular ones work together). It always amazes me how choosing the right color schemes and color relations can do to the look and feel of things. Even the oversaturated on white color scheme of Mirrors Edge has captured a generation of designers. There are some very beautiful websites, games, moves, etc. out there that capture color theory very well (amongst many other design elements).

As someone who does backend web development, I have try to learn about all this kind of stuff for when I do front end. My hat goes off to those who can do it very well because it makes a big difference.

I may get down voted, but... Time to sell the code/program to Netflix. They can crowd source processing and then sell prints. Money and chill.

rocketmonkee ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 13:46:47 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I won't downvote you because it's not a terrible idea, but I will point out that Netflix won't buy the code or the program that OP used. You can search the Internet for "movie barcode" and get all manner of results for almost any movie (within reason), so there's little incentive for Netflix to try to charge people to make these when they're already available.

On top of that, if Netflix really wanted to get into the business of selling prints, they could just use any one of the readily available open source programs that do these, such as imagemagick.

Median is a type of average, just as mean and mode are.

[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 13:55:04 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Let me get this straight:

You take each frame of a movie, about 24 frames per second, and so for a 2 hour movie thats around ~173000 frames or so; it averages to a pretty high number.

Each frame has however many pixels. If we assume HD that is 1920x1280 is ~2,460,000 pixels in a single frame.

So, you take the value of each pixel, which is represented by 3 bytes, 1 byte per color (RGB = red, green, blue = 3 bytes) and adds those bytes with the bytes of every other pixel; around 2,416,000 additions for each and every single frame. Then, you divides that number by the # pixels to get the average color of that frame in a single 3 byte value.

You then repeats that process for every single frame, correct?

Cool. Does it take a long time to process all that or not? I feel like the number of instructions would be around the 109'th or 1010th power range, and so a Ghz processor would have no problem dealing with this in a couple seconds or so.

Also, 173,000*3bytes=519kB. Not a lot of raw data to be honest!

Any Michael Bay movie would just be a mixture of neon blue (for background lighting), a greasy, tan orange (everyone's skin color), fiery red (for all the explosions), and then camouflage (for the US Army).

I feel like when people ask, "What exactly is the kind of content that is appropriate for the /r/dataisbeautiful sub?" we should point to this series of pictures.

It's data. It's a very clear and simple presentation of it, and it is beautiful.

Mc_Sqweebs ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:46:47 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I thought this was posted quite awhile back I believe. And the top comment was something along the lines of someone liking the color orange in the Aladdin pic, and was going to try and mix it or something rather.

What's really cool here is that you can see that the second half of Act II in all of these films is generally darker as things start going wrong for the protagonist.

This is cool, though I've seen a few sites that have done this already.

If anyone's looking for specific movies, both http://thecolorsofmotion.com/films and http://moviebarcode.tumblr.com/ have a bunch. I even think there was a way to purchase a lot of them, but I can't remember how, or if that was another different site altogether.

Color is extremely important in movies. Different colors influence the way we feel, this is why horror movies for example tend to use lots of red, white and black.

HadrasVorshoth ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 10:20:28 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Huh. WALL-E you can actually follow the plot. Sepia, then darkness, so in the open on Earth then going in his caravan/shack, then a longer period of sepia so he's back outside, then BAM BLUE LIGHT MOTHA FUCKER. Things get darker then, as most of the EVA scenes are at night, then whoosh sepia fading... fading... fading...

Blue. Welcome to the Axiom. Then the darker segments are from when in the captain's chamber. There's one point that's particularly bright, which I suspect is the robot-surgery room because of the white hologram shields.

This makes me have a weird thought.

I feel that this is something my subconscious picks up on when watching a whole movie, yet it does not "save" in the normal ways as a memory, if that makes any sense. Which makes me imagine when we are able to enhance our minds and be able to perceive our subconscious mind.. And then.. I'll stop there.. :D

I had the idea a while back to use this + tolerance to fingerprint movies, and build a service that could automatically detect which movie/tv-show was in a file, and provide metadata for that as a result.

Similar services already exist for music, but I wanted to build one for movies.

Never thought that the resulting images would look so nice

These are called "color scripts." although these examples are mathematically generated, usually an art director will take a selection of storyboard frames and get them colored in a similar fashion in order to plot out the pace of a film's look and feel.

Ooh, now turn it I to a pie chart to show the overall share of the movie each color gets. We lose the temporal data, but we'll gain pie charts. Also, its sort of near to think of walle as 80% grey, 20% yellow, or whatever it is.

bmills2 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 17:31:59 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

My favorite is WALL-E. Not because it's my favorite movie, but you can clearly see the story line in those images. At the beginning it is primarily earth tones because he is on Earth and by the end it's blues and darker colors because he is on the space station. Pretty awesome.

Had done a similar project a couple of years ago. It would average the color of each row and compress the frame to 1 pixel wide. I selected 30 films to explore color from B&W till date and ran the algorithm on it. The result was a keen insight into the color choices and selections for the films. I hope you like 'em. :) https://np.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/194uyd/movie_barcodes_for_films_i_thought_had_great/

This is really cool! I'd love to see this with movies that make interesting use of color balance like Vanilla Sky, The Matrix, and Kill Bill.

The colors also represent the relative mood and feel of each section of the movie. You can follow the emotion of each section of the movie and see how it progresses by looking at the gradients.

You'll notice that in each movie, the colors become darker around the 3/4 section, when the tension rises and the conflict becomes the most serious. (Jafar gets the lamp, Axiom Ship takes over)

BoneDuke ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:51:22 on November 4, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

What is average color? How is this determined? Are you talking about the grade from 0-255 or what? "Average color" seems quite arbitrary at this point.

I expected finding Nemo to be more blue than that

I'd like to see this with one dimension of the frame preserved. Since time is on the horizontal axis, why not preserve the vertical? Each pixel would be the average of the full row of pixels on that frame at that time. For example, the top left pixel of the result would be the average of the top row on the first frame of the movie.

Saw this and thought it was interesting, so I decided to give it a crack. If anyone is interested in the code, it's open sourced here: https://github.com/timmystephani/movie_image_maker

Hey, these are great! Did you add the vignette (dark parts at the top and bottom) in post processing / photoshop or was that a part of the program? same question with the end credits. i imagine there would be a lot of black at the end of the images.

I feel like this should be able to tell us something useful. But I don't think it does.

z10z10 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:30:16 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

This is so awesome! I've never had the time to watch any of these and now I feel like I've seen them all in 10 seconds. Sure, it may have glossed over some of the inconsequestial details but I've certainly got the big picture down, which is more than most who've actually had to sit through them remember anyway. Can you teach my wife how to do this so she can just hand me a visual representation of her next soliliqui when 'we need to talk' about something?

sighunzips ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 06:56:01 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Am I the only one that thinks this is absolutely fucking useless and stupid? =o

lucasvb ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 07:06:03 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Why? Don't you think it's interesting to visually represent in a single image how the overall color of a movie changes throughout its duration? A lot of thought is put into what movies look like, and this kind of thing neatly illustrates an aspect of that.

RandyIsAStupidName ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 14:13:10 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

Quit your bullshit. This is not OC. I've had this image in my desktop folder for years. Also have 2001, A Clockwork Orange, Alien... OP is a liar

Edit: Did you make these as well? Didn't think so, cause OP is a liar.

lovethebacon ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:28:04 on November 3, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

OP used a different approach than those.

P.S. using the same technique as you linked, here's Clockwork orange, but wider: http://i.imgur.com/WrLJPgZ.png. Scaled horizontally 25%.

Aladdin is definitely my favorite out of the bunch due to all the purple.

Where did you get the idea to do this?
