You have to.

Aborting due to empty commit message.

A real G would force merge to master.

I was working on a team with a pretty new guy. He asked now that he's done with his task, what he should do next. I mistakingly joked and said push it to master. About 30 seconds later I hear the boss scream "what the fuck?!" It was an easy fix but funny none the less.

Marsroverr ยท 22 points ยท Posted at 22:05:56 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I was at a hackathon recently and force pushed because at that point I was done with trying to resolve merge conflicts. The CTO of one of the sponsors saw that and said that I would be fired if I did that at his company.

jvjanisse ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 23:17:57 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Mechakoopa ยท 10 points ยท Posted at 00:55:11 on October 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It basically invalidates the local copy of the source that everyone else has. Say you check out the code at point A, meanwhile someone else makes commits B, C and D. You finish your change and commit it locally, so you have A and B2, but something in B2 conflicts with a change in C and you can't figure out how to fix it, so you force push and now master just has A and B2 and has lost B, C and D. Plus the guy who checked out D and made local commit E can't push that back to master either because the changes it was based on have ceased to exist.

You're basically changing the roads someone else made after people have already driven on them because you didn't like where they went or you got lost.

Eain ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 08:37:53 on October 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The "master" is a starting copy of the code. When lots of people are working on the project, they can't all work on the same machine, so they ask for a "local copy" of the master file. When they're certain of their changes not breaking anything, they "push" them back into that master file. The system makes sure there aren't any "conflicts", or where one person's changes and another person's changes are incompatible. If any exist, the system asks you to account for the conflicts.

A "force push" ignores that last step, and if there's a conflict it just writes your changes in anyway. This is absurdly dangerous because of the catastrophic errors it can cause in the master file (and the master file, remember, is the one EVERYONE works off of.) On top of that, it also screws with the copies everyone else has; since the new master is no longer compatible with the old one, none of their changes will be compatible either and they will likely have to start over.

frankle ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:44:13 on October 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Code is written and "commits" are made. That's basically like saving all your changes and getting a "receipt" in the form of a SHA hash. Each commit is based off of the previous one, so there's a clear history to the changes that are made. This history is shared by everybody working on the project -- they "pull" the changes into their local copy.

If you force push, you're saying "ignore the history that everybody else agrees on, and substitute my own". It can really mess up everybody else's state, since your history might not agree with theirs.

It's a dick move, unless there's a reason and everybody's agreed on it in advance...

Git is a program for saving versions of your code, so it's easy for you to go back to what the code used to be like a few changes back if you accidentally write something shitty or delete something you didn't mean to. Git stores your code in these things called "branches", which you can kind of think of as folders in a filesystem. "master" is the main branch/folder, and it's common for programmers to work by copying master into a new folder/branch just for themselves, editing the code in their personal WIP branch until they're happy with it, and then copying their changes back over to master once they're done with their work and sure that it's ready to go. The "master" branch is where you put all the code that is supposed to be done and confirmed working.

That process of copying your WIP branch changes back over to the "master" folder/branch is what's called "pushing to master", and it's a totally routine part of working. Unfortunately though, if you and another programmer have both worked on the same files at the same time in your own different personal branches, git doesn't know who's changes to save when you try to push your branches back in--you both changed the files in different ways at the same time, so it just doesn't know who's changes (or both) should take priority. You have to manually go through all the conflicting files and tell git which lines to keep from whose changes. It's generally a pain in the ass to try and resolve these changes and make sure that the program is still working, since there's potentially a ton of conflicts and you need to understand both your own and your coworker's changes.

"Force pushing" is telling git to just completely forget everything that "master" is right now, delete it, and replace it with your WIP branch instead. It means you don't have to resolve any conflicts, because you're just completely deleting the old "master" off the face of the earth, forever and ever amen, and overwriting it with your WIP branch instead. This is tempting to some programmers because fixing merge conflicts is so annoying, but it's a fucking horrible practice for a bunch of reasons:

  • any changes any other programmers finished after you started your WIP branch are potentially lost forever, since you deleted the version of master that had them. better hope they still have their personal branches saved
  • any changes any other programmers started after you started your branch are going to have absolutely horrible merge conflicts that will be impossible to resolve without some crazy git wizardry ("git am patch" mostly), they may have to start all over. git won't even recognize that they're from the same codebase, because as far as git's concerned those changes came from a branch/folder that doesn't exist anymore
  • your force push completely dropped a bunch of history off of master, so it is now impossible to go back in time and get those old changes back if you need to for any reason

It's harsh but it is pretty fair to fire somebody for it IMO, depending on the context around them deciding to do it. It's a dick move.

The big reason of a handshake to show that you're polite, using your right hand is proper etiquette. It's not my fault that the world decided thousands of years ago to use the right hand. You might as well not shake hands if you're going to use the left one.

dudeperson3 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:56:30 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Sorry, lemme clarify:

So you're sitting on the toilet at a 75-90 degree angle. If you stand its beneficial to keep that angle or make it smaller (<60 degrees?). This way you can more easily make sure everything is clean. So, yes we're standing, but now its more of a squat because of the better angle; more like a standing-squat?

Did that help or did I make it worse?

Zedifo ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:09:02 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Here's a list of all the Premier teir tournaments so far:

http://wiki.teamliquid.net/overwatch/Portal:Tournaments#tab-1

In the US there's one clear favourite though the gap has been closing recently, in EU there's maybe 2-3 and I don't know too much about asia but maybe 1 clear leader there. At Premier teir tournaments 2 or 3 of these regions are involved so the potential grand final winner is never clear.

There are still strong prizes for other placements in the tournaments and places 1st-8th can never be predicted accurately as there are often thrilling upsets.

thebritishbloke ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:53:33 on October 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The Overwatch professional scene is one of the smallest out there, likely because the game is so new. Dota 2 has the biggest prize pools, their flagship tournament this year had a $20,000,000 prize pool with the winner taking home $9m.

In regards to Dota, the biggest tournament (The International) is generally invite-only. But they hold Majors throughout the year which generally have a $3-5m prize pool, where teams are invited, qualify through placing in smaller tournaments, or qualifying through open regional tournaments where anyone can start a team.

There are different tiers of teams, so saying everyone is just as likely to win isn't true. Simply put, some players are better than others and some players work well with other players etc.

He's a pro gamer that goes by the handle A_seagull on Twitch and YouTube.

He streams live everyday and has 350k subscribers on YouTube, so I'm sure he got over it.

If anything, maybe more embarrassing for the interviewer as he's by far the less well known person in the clip (at least in the e-sport world).

Plopwieldingmonkey ยท 33 points ยท Posted at 19:03:39 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I think a gif is sometimes more like a book, the lack of sensory stimulation makes your brain kinda fill in the gaps with your own imagination.

karspearhollow ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:48:52 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Apparently the interviewer had been gesturing toward his interviewees like that all day, so someone misinterpreting it as a handshake was probably bound to happen.

Tratix ยท 72 points ยท Posted at 21:22:33 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Lol yeah, you don't say "well thank you very much for your time" and hold out your hand without expecting a handshake.

freshhorse ยท 26 points ยท Posted at 18:25:02 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

If that's the lefty, it's pretty clear it's not for a handshake but could be mirrored. They played it off nicely though so it's totally fine. Gifs taken out of context are a bit misleading.

Back when people used to kill each other with swords all the time, they would usually hold them in their right hand. So shaking right hands was a gesture of peace.

CommondeNominator ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:44:01 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I've always heard that before toilet paper people would wipe their ass with their left hand, so you'd use your right to greet someone. Factuality not guaranteed.

Tratix ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:25:20 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It's just common knowledge to use your right hand. That way everyone is predictable and compatible with each other.

freshhorse ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 19:47:12 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It's not that it's not a big deal, it's just that it'd be very weird and random. Like if I'd present myself by saying "my age is freshhorse and my name is 20" you'd probably assume I'll hold up a spork next. It's weird.

Gcarsk ยท 31 points ยท Posted at 20:41:10 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I agree. Interviews often end with handshakes, and that was the end of the interview. It makes more sense with audio. It's both parties fault. The interviewer shouldn't have put out his hand towards the interviewee, and the interviewee shouldn't have fallen for it

ChrisHarperMercer ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 21:20:04 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Handshakes are pointless customs. If someone offers a handshake, I tell them I don't caress other people's germ covered palms. Then I never have to deal with awkwardness like this.

cooterbreath ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 23:11:41 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I think the awkwardness from a statement like that would be almost as awkward as a botched handshake.

[deleted] ยท 83 points ยท Posted at 19:25:33 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

You could tell by his hesitation that he wasn't sure if it was a handshake or gesture.
He judged wrong, reacted too late and couldn't back out once he stated to swing his hand toward the presenter.

Arenten ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 20:52:23 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

atleast he's not this guy

[deleted] ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 22:11:23 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Honestly, both of these seem like a partial fault is on the announcers, especially in OPs video. Whether the announcer was going for a handshake or not you'd expect most decent reporters to adapt to something so simple. (Slight edit: Just watched full video of OP's scene and reporter does adapt)

As for it being left handed. I shake probably 5-10 hands a day (work) and it's not that rare for me to switch a right handed to a lefty if the other person implies they'd rather shake with that hand. It's not the norm but you adjust. .

deesmutts88 ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 22:00:02 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Why do scouts shake with the left hand?

SpillinJimmy ยท 41 points ยท Posted at 22:07:30 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The founder of scouting, Lord Robert Baden Powell, encountered Ashanti warriors according to a story. "In our land only the bravest of the brave shake hands with the left hand, because to do so we must drop our shields and our protection." They said.

Must have made an impression on him.

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:19:58 on October 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

But the left hand was the shield hand...???

SpillinJimmy ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 00:22:42 on October 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah think about it. To shake hands with your left means getting rid of your shield, or at the least it means exposing yourself and no longer protecting yourself with the shield. I hope I worded that okay.

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:28:09 on October 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Andromedium ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:27:57 on October 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Shaking hands using your left is unproffesional. The commenter you are replying to only shakes using their left hand whilst in scout uniform, to ensure the reciever knows why they are shaking with their left hand.

Frothpiercer ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 12:28:36 on November 7, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

dquizzle ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:25:05 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

You shake with your left hand when you want to keep your sword in your right

MisuVir ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:45:55 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I did once, but it was because he was missing his right arm.

ITwitchToo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:33:02 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Seems fairly normal if the person has a problem with their right hand, e.g. cast, prosthesis, etc.

ChrisHarperMercer ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 21:36:39 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

in this situation it's pretty clear there is nothing wrong with the other persons hand

ITwitchToo ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:37:59 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Sure, completely agreed. Just saying there are a few situations where you'd probably do it.

Sonofraiden ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:12:07 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah my cousins right arm has something wrong with it and it's really stiff and painful to move. I always forget and go for the right handed shake, and then have to apologize and do an awkward lefty hand shake.

fallway ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 21:23:05 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Agreed. It completely goes against normal handshake etiquette/protocol. If it was a handshake, he would have already transferred the mic to the other hand

ChrisHarperMercer ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 21:30:29 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

In all fairness the video does make it way less cringy now! further down in this thread you can see it and I can totally understand how it can be mistaken for a handshake gesture lol I suggest you check it out

IamNotYourBuddy ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:31:49 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Except you can tell by his expression that he was surprised the guy in the glasses tried to shake his hand, because he never extended it for a handshake.

deser_t ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:25:04 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

never. its why awkwardness ensues because people dont recognise the gesture coming from the left hand. also in many cultures they use left hand for wiping ass and is extremely offensive. if right hand is preoccupied then obviously its not the right opportunity for a handshake and a tip of the fedora is sufficient.

vtbeavens ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 22:04:00 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I had the same thing happen recently with a coworker in the breakroom. Thankfully the handshake ended up connecting and it was only semi-awkward.

How am I bullying anyone. You're the one that brought up money as if it had any relevance to the situation, I'm just pointing out that if that has anything to do with the situation he would've used his resources to address it.

Get off your high horse, calling me a bully while saying I'm lazy. That's rich.

Kreekakon ยท 51 points ยท Posted at 18:20:09 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

This gif does leave out the part where the reporter realizes what's going on and moves back to shake his hand and play it off in a fun way very nicely for them both. It was unfortunate that this situation even happened but the way they dealt with this made it much less cringe than it could've been.

NanchoMan ยท 35 points ยท Posted at 20:49:47 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It also leaves out that the reporter said "Thank you very much for your time" as he looks directly at him and extends his hand.

Thank you for the chess comparison. I've been trying to get a middle ground between my feeling of esports as illegitimate/unserious but nonetheless requiring a skill.

ANUSTART942 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 10:50:09 on October 25, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I certainly don't think it's illegitimate, and the term e-sports kinda gets a pass, it's when people try to say, "Oh, it's 100% a real sport." Like, no, it's a competition with stakes and skill, but it's just... not a sport.

I think that's why a lot of casual fans like his stream. I actually had the fortunate opportunity to play on the ladder with Seagull.

I remember one time on stream, someone who donated asked "Seagull, what do I do about my friend who is bad at the game and always wants to play ranked with me, but I always lose when I play with him?"

And then Seagull responds with "Tell him because otherwise he will do it every day" or something along those lines. I was so caught off guard by how straightforward and quick he was in this situation.

Cool dude.

grayecho ยท 57 points ยท Posted at 21:32:37 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I mean the reporter reached out his hand and said, "Thank you very much for your time." It was basically as much the reporter's fault as Seagull's. Calling someone awkward or bad at being social based off of one small mistake is pretty silly.

badhoneylips ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 22:11:16 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Left handed guy here. What about throwing a ball? Catching? What about a computer mouse? What about opening a door with keys? What about scissors? I do almost everything with my left hand... Did your parents force you to do all of that with your right hand? I heard something like that from my uncle. I assume you are not ambidextrous though because you specifically said left handed.

C0rdt ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:24:26 on October 23, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Nope I just don't do anything other than use a fork/spoon and write with my left! I throw with my right, swing a bat/golf club by turning to the right (I assume this is right handed? Not big on sports). Mouse on my right hand. Keys with right hand. Scissors too.

Don't know why, don't really care.
I remember once as a very young kid going to shake hands with someone using my left hand and having to be taught that people shake with their right hand. Other than that nobody has forced me to do anything lol.

Same as the last guy, I only use my left for writing and eating but say I'm left handed. I throw a football with my right and use scissors with my right. It's just the way I did things because it was most comfortable. No one forced me to do anything.

aurora2k7 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:51:22 on October 24, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

No one forced you, but you were probably taught that way. Normal scissors for example are right handed and can only be comfortably be used with a right hand. Throwing and catching is a bit different though, that's definitely interesting. I have 3 lefthanded friends, and they all use their left hand for most activities.

Honestly though CSGO isnt filled with that many awkward people (besides jw), theyre just a little underprepped for proper camera etiquette and procedure. A lot of the interviewers make that abundantly clear since none of them really have a proper procedure anyways and they all just wing it.

I did something similar - but with the appropriate shaking hand.

Went to get my hair cut. The barbershop I go to is for walk-ins only. So I show up, grab a number and wait for it to be called. Eventually it is, so, I walk up to one of the chairs and as I'm sitting down, the barber reaches out his right hand. Thinking he was just going to shake my hand to greet me, I shake it.

He laughs and says, "No. I just wanted your ticket number so I could throw it away."

Oh. Well fuck.

So, at work the other day I was helping a customer by showing them how to use a rollback code when paying at the pump (gas station). I took the receipt that had the rollback code on it and walked her through the process. Once that was all done and she could begin fueling, she extended her arm and put out her hand for me to hand her receipt back.

However, I thought she wanted a handshake. So I reached out my hand, and just as our hands made contact, she pulls back and says she was reaching for the receipt. But for some reason my brain thought I could redeem myself from the embarrassment by taking her hand, which was now by her side, and shook it anyway and said, "Oh, well here's a handshake too!"

Ok, this interviewer really needs to keep his hands in check. He totally held his hand out (albeit his left hand,) and you can see his eyes moved down towards Seagull's hand area while his own was still extended. I'm sure Seagull thought it was weird that he was using his left but he definitely had it out there in the shaking position, paused, and then looked down at Seagull's hand. Props to Seagull for laughing it off afterwards, I would have been confused too. The interviewer does that with his hands often.

Parents of gamers, take your kids outside once in a while please and teach them "hello, how are you?", " I'm fine thank you" and a simple fucking handshake. It's kind of important or your kid could end up this weirdo.

When I shake someone's hand, I continue the grabbing motion into a down beat, then bounce down once. When you nod your head, you don't think about the fact that it has to come up again; shaking hands is the same. All the emphasis is on the down beat, so it's just like down-down.

Source: have been told I have a firm handshake.

There's just so much going on here. Not only does that handshake almost look like the player wants to make a move on the commentator.. THE COMMENTATOR WASN'T EVEN GOING FOR A HANDSHAKE TO BEGIN WITH. And the player raises his arms like, "Bruh. Why this guy no shake hands even tho he wanted it??".

Oh god.
