It was intended as a joke, therefore it's a joke. Humor is subjective, and does not determine joke status. If a psychopath finds his mother's death in a car accident hilarious, that doesn't make it a joke.
But the people you referred to would be the subject, not the object, right? They are the ones doing the thing. I guess you could argue that you are the subject because you are doing the action of knowing them, making them the object, but they are also kind of subjects because they're the ones saying things.

Him "Well for one, he only works 5 months out of the year. I know he makes more than me, but I would be working harder for her"
Me "you know he makes more than you, not only an hour, but than you and I both do all year, right? If you think it should be about money, he has more!"
Him "it's not about money. It's about who would be gone more working."
Me "so you want her to appreciate that you are doing harder labor?"
Him "no... I would be providing more for her than him"
If you say so... I have heard some zingers from people you would assume are being humorous if you hadn't heard the full conversation. Whether it be about the nice guy mentality or not... I agree to disagree since I've experienced the opposite. I guess that is all I can say.

I hope it is. But I think people in this thread are far too confident that it is.
I have had conversations that make me doubt this person's ability to use wit or sarcasm.
Others ability to say something completely in line with this and all with no humor or anything has caused me to be very cautious of people that "joke" this way. Far too often they are serious and I have taken it as a joke until they prove me wrong or get angry that I laughed or explained how their logic didn't add up.

I have had conversations that make me doubt this person's ability to use wit or sarcasm.
Others ability to say something completely in line with this and all with no humor or anything has caused me to be very cautious of people that "joke" this way. Far too often they are serious and I have taken it as a joke until they prove me wrong or get angry that I laughed or explained how their logic didn't add up.
