You should have watched till the end, he pleads guilty to attempted injury to a minor and enticing a minor via computer. 5 year prison sentence suspended after serving 2, plus 10 years on the sex offender registry. They're not playing around with the sentences in the new season. I feel like back in the day they weren't quite as harsh but maybe laws have gotten stricter.

If a video being released could or would act in the public's best interest, consent often isn't needed to display someone's face. For example, if the video would deter crime.
Additionally, a piece presented as news rather than entertainment is held to a different standard. Imagine having to ask for someone's permission to air your expose' on their crooked autobody shop. Nobody would agree to that. The press is free to present things that a show produced strictly for entertainment purposes wouldn't be free to.

I'm going to try and answer this. I had no idea this show was back on TV. I could binge watch Chris Hansen.
It's a federal offense to have a sexually explicit online chat with someone who identifies as being underage. They can actually be any age, but if someone claims to be underage and the other person still pursues a sexual conversation after that age is established in the chat, it's illegal. As funny and cringey as this clip is, the dick pic is crucial. It equates as evidence if this guy is found guilty in a court of law.
Also, it should be noted that the severity of these charges vary by state, but it's illegal no matter where you go. Hope this helped

The burden is on you to find their real age. It's why in statutory rape cases people can still be convicted if they slept with someone who showed them a fake ID that said they were over the legal age limit, or if they met in a over-21's club, etc. The burden is on you to verify their age.

If my understanding is accurate, it depends on how good your lawyer is. If the judge can be convinced that you had enough reason to believe the person was of legal age, you might get off scot-free. But personally, I wouldn't recommend putting that to the test.

Thinking it was a minor is all the evidence that is needed. By showing up to the house of the perceived minor he was talking to, he fully demonstrated intent. Intent is the key factor. Had it actually been a minor, things could have and probably would have ended very badly.

It underscores the 'intent' part of the crime, which is helpful when there wasn't any active victimization.
For example, if you were trying to build a case that a man was trying to hire a hitman to kill his wife, having e-mails or phone logs is helpful. But even more helpful is if you set up an undercover officer as a hitman and get him to pay a deposit on the contract. That's a real tangible act, as opposed to the 'all talk' nature of correspondence.
It helps to discredit the obvious defense of 'I wasn't really going to do anything.' Someone might be able to argue that if they live 4 hours away from their potential victim and never met in person, but if they drive to where they believe their victim to live with a bunch of condoms and Mike's Hard Crisp Apple, that defense becomes less believable.

this conversation is obviously more nuanced than I've made it with my reactive comment. I'm just questioning their method here, not defending the guy in the video.
If a 13 year old uses a fake ID to get into the bar- is the bar still held legally accountable for serving a minor? Yes, technically they can be. But a sting operation against the bar will likely use minors with no ID at all, rather than minors with fake IDs. Because it's a bit unfair to trick the bar like that.
I would assume that a website like Grindr has a terms of agreement that you must be of age to use it. That's supposed to weed out minors. The expectation by users of the site, are that other users are legal.
How about another example- You click on a video on Pornhub that says "young girl going wild". You assume, because it's on pornhub, that they've done the job of weeding out any potentially illegal content. What if they haven't, and it turn out that now you're watching something illegal- maybe she's 17? Maybe the video tells you that once you've started watching? In the moment- where do you assign responsibility? Maybe you assume she's role playing. Now what if this video was uploaded by Chris Hanson to catch predators? I don't think that's very sporting.
I've said it before on this sub, but he casts a wide net, and a lot of the guys he catches are socially awkward and not actual predators. It really seems that he's the real predator- the way he puts out bait and hunts for low hanging fruit.

We're looking at a situation where the people on the site were supposedly already vetted. It's unlikely that this guy was looking for underage people online, because he was using a site that is supposed to be offlimit for minors. Except no one forced or coaxed this man into continuing his dialog with a 13 year old kid. The fact that he met him through an app that's supposed to be 18+ doesn't mean anything. There's a grey area there if he'd shown extreme reluctance and had to be repeatedly won over by the decoy, but TCAP has always been pretty clear that the decoys never take an active role in the engagement aside from providing the venue.

yeah I sort of agree, there are a few people they've caught over the years that I feel sorry for and can't imagine they actively sought out or got off on having sex specifically with minors. They still did a bad thing and committed a crime but they don't deserve to be presented alongside some of the bottom-feeding weirdos that show up to the stings.
I think it all goes back to the original purpose of TCAP which was to show parents how apparently easy it was for their children to come into contact with strangers who are desperate for sex on the internet. alright- well we're pretty much on the same page, then. except i don't think the vast majority of people are innocent and virtuous. I think this show takes advantage of people with social problems and also exaggerates the pedo-fear we have.
I had a friend in highschool, who at 14 or 15 started a relationship with a gay guy in his mid 20's. It was weird, but I don't think the older guy was a predator- I think he had emotional and developmental issues which made it difficult for him to find friends his age. I think both of them had an issue with being gay and were seeking acceptance and affirmation. My friend's parents accepted it and they're still together 10+ years later, as far as I'm aware. I definitely think there should be systems in place to protect minors from actual predators, but I think we need to be able to differentiate between someone who is intentionally hurting people and someone with a problem who doesn't follow the appropriate social morays.

Well I totally disagree there, pretty much all the people caught on TCAP had no intention of hurting anyone but that doesn't mean they aren't fucked up scumbags who deserve prison time.
It shouldn't be legal or acceptable for someone in their mid-20s to be in a relationship with someone who's 14. Obviously there are cases historically where such age gaps have been bridged but these incidences are so rare that there's no point discriminating to the extent that we should question the quality of a creep's love for his victim.
Kids can't consent, therefore kids shouldn't be in relationships with people outside their age group. It's pretty simple. It doesn't matter how many social problems you have or how lonely you are. I have some sympathy with those that have genuine mental problems but it's still totally unacceptable and it's clear that most of the people on TCAP don't fall under that banner.

alright, well we disagree. I think criminals tend to be a marginalized group in society that deserves some protection from a black and white identification. Similarly, I believe felons deserve the right to vote and the accused deserve the right to be innocent until proven guilty. I think drug addiction should be treated as an illness rather than a crime. I think the guy in this video needs counseling more than he needs to be labeled a sex predator on television.
I disagree that it's simple. If it was simple, you wouldn't have such a variety in age of consent laws among otherwise similar cultures. I think that the majority of kids who are truly victimized are not victimized by creeps on the internet, and that protecting our teenagers should entail empowerment rather than proclaiming them to be victims incapable of making their own decisions. At 15, I was able to drive a car (which can have profound impact on other people) but unable to make decisions for myself regarding tobacco and alcohol use, and who I can sleep with. I still made those decisions, because that's what teenagers do. But it may have been in violation of the law.

Not to mention, the chatter comes to the house of their own accord. People have made the victimless crime argument, and I kind of see where that comes from, but the precedent was already set before these honeypots kicked in
