Joke falls flat during Magic: The Gathering tournament.

Oh god, it's less than 10 seconds but it really does feel like an eternity.

The joke wasn't so horrible. At least no more horrible than "it flies you dies."

I think it's possible the big guy didn't get the follow-up joke.

What did the guy on left say? I can only hear "...something... you die"?

He actually did. She just beat his ass despite his deck full of cards with flying. Nerds just often have no sense of humor and take their magic too seriously.

So in Magic, it's not uncommon to give your deck a name. It can be a serious name, but most people choose some witty or quirky name.

The woman asks the man on the left what he named his deck. He said "It flies, you dies." She laughs because she can probably guess what the deck is about -- using a lot of flying creatures to attack the enemy from above until they die.

The big guy then says "So far it's only halfway there," so he's joking saying that his deck has the "it flies" part down (he can make a lot of flying creatures, but not the "you dies" part (he can actually win the game by killing his opponent). It's basically a self deprecating comment that he thinks his deck is bad.

Then the guy in the back says "depends on who the "you" is referring to," basically joking that either way, someone dies when he plays the deck... himself. But the joke is just a little awkward and lame and... well, you see.

Fat guy says "It Flies, You Dies" and then says that he's "only halfway there". Skinny guy says "that depends on who the you is referring to", which I interpreted to mean that although fat guy hasn't died in a plane crash, other people have. I may have that completely wrong though.

Personally I find it compulsive. There is something about shuffling the fuck out of cards that is satisfying. Maybe she is just nervous.

magic isnt "buy all the expensive cards and become unbeatable". Pro level magic is like "pay to compete at this standard". Cards often become more expensive because they are better - decks that are proven to be good against other good decks go up in price because people want to play good decks. Some cards might be more expensive if they fit into several archetypes or if the card has only been printed once as opposed to 3-4 times over the years. Having the most expensive deck doesnt mean you will win although there is a clear difference between spending money on a proven tournament deck versus a random pile of cards out of the 5 cent bin. The range of price in competitive decks varies wildly in different formats. Sometimes a competitive deck in format X will run 1k because it has expensive cards from each color and all the expensive resource cards to cast them all on curve and some other deck will be 50 dollars because it only uses one color and thus doesnt need expensive resource cards or all of the cards it needs to execute its strategy were printed at common and thus they are plentiful/inexpensive

Yes, there are deckbuilding restrictions for this exact reason.

There are lots of different formats and banlists to restrict the prices of competitive decks becoming too high.

In order of expense to play, you have:

Standard works on a two-year rotation so any cards from sets released before 2015 are currently no longer legal - meaning the prices of cards never get too crazy.

Modern is all cards released since 8th edition (from ~2003 onward) this format is more expensive than Standard but has the advantage that you never have to get rid of a deck after two years. Allowing you to become attached to a "forever" deck without having to spend big on old, rare, overpowered cards from the early days of Magic in the 90s.

Legacy is a very, very expensive format to play as it includes every set from Magic's history with the exception of a few very old, very powerful, crazy expensive cards such as the famous Black Lotus.

Vintage is basically every card ever. High rollers only.
