Believe it or not, they make you submit 5 personal stories or tidbits before you go on the show, and then they select one for Alex to ask about. So of all the funny/interesting things about himself that this dude submitted, this story was the cream of the crop.

Remember when Ken Jennings was on? for like 8,000 episodes? They were really scraping the bottom of the barrel for stories. "So, Ken... do you like, ummm, spaghetti?"
I don't remember any of the interviews. He was always very charming though, so I imagine he was able to talk about his love of Italian food in a way that would interest us all.

I got cornered by Mormons when I went to school. I was just like, "Uh, hey can I get my bike and go?" Stood stuck in a bike rack for like 5 minutes listening to them compliment me on looking like a good guy....
In reference to the fact that he is a Mormon, a religion that prohibits profanity or anything vulgar. So I was referencing that it is cool that he is Mormon, yet doesn't act in the typical Mormon way. No need to talk about the in and outs of Mormonism.
I watch a lot of Jeopardy, and the stories are like this a lot. I think what made this one stand out as cringey was his inability to wrap it up. Put a button on it, don't say "but, um..." cause Alex isn't going to help you.

I'd just make something up. Like the first time I entered a hot wing eating competition and I thought you had to eat the bones too, so I did and all my teeth are fake.
One of the many, many, reasons I would not ever go on Jeopardy is the interview portion. It's basically like saying "hey, I hear you have many amusing anecdotes. Tell me an amusing anecdote. Go"
I always fast forward it too, but I did read why they do it in a book someone gave me (yes a book about Jeopardy, I skimmed it). They said they take the break half way through the first round to give people a chance to shake off any nerves and reset their brains, and also to give them a chance to figure out the signalling device better as some people just mash it or don't get the hang of it right away. I guess they can ask questions in the break or something? Anyway. They do the anecdotes to give the contestants a mental break.
I used to with my girlfriend. I only get to see her maybe once a week so she would record the episodes and we would watch them when I came over. We liked to make a competition out of it.

[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 03:51:57 on June 6, 2016 · (Permalink)
I will definitely be incorporating the word "wagglebob" into my daily vocabulary.
Agreed. This video contains the kind of cringe that legitimately makes me uncomfortable to the point of not wanting to finish watching it. Classic cringe. Quality cringe. Excusable cringe.
Then there's the cringe that comes from someone behaving inappropriately, like a guy being overly forward/demanding with a girl & vice versa. The kind that really makes you question a person's lack of common sense &/or common courtesy towards another person. Some are far more innocent & evoke feelings of sympathy, but most tend to be just flat out inappropriate & leave you thinking "fucking what?" Definitely more of a modern cringe, made that much more popular with online communication methods & the rise of social media.
Unfortunately, far too many fucking idiots have started using the word "cringe" just to describe shit they don't agree with.
Things like, "You put banana slices in your cereal? Cringe"
While some will blatantly criticize a person's or people's actions & simply label it as cringe.
"You went to the movies by yourself? Cringe"
As if calling it cringe somehow justifies them being an asshole.
Pretty much. I often research advanced cringe theory on my second monitor while simultaneously overtaking new lands with my clan on the other just to give myself more of a challenge.
The only thing I'm a bigger expert at than ruling the realm or mastering cringe theory is fulfilling M'lady's deepest & most erotic desires. Nothing gets her more aroused & in the mood than watching me cast God-tier level spells without even breaking a sweat.
M'lady would tell you all this herself, but she's currently taking a warm soak in the washing machine to clean off a few love spots made during our recent exchange of intense passion.
i'm two days late on this but "taking a warm soak in the washing machine" made me laugh out loud in public and spit on my laptop screen and i'm honestly not sure why. the other stuff i've seen before but the washing machine? did not see that coming.
I have a moderately similar story that I usually tell in a moderately convoluted way.
I was in Europe and a little gypsy girl in Berlin stole my phone at Alexanderplatz (the story of the phone getting stolen is similarly convoluted). I went to London soonthereafter and was a phoneless millennial. I went on a delightful walking tour which ended at Big Ben, but afterward, was supposed to meet up with an older American man who had been living in London for 20 years whom I had met a few weeks earlier while doing ukulele karaoke on a boat, and he was going to give me a new (old) iPhone to use for the remainder of my trip. We were supposed to meet at 3:00, but without my phone I didn't know what time it was. I asked the tour guide for the time, before we both looked up and I realized that I was standing near one of the biggest and most famous clocks in the world.
The stories on jeopardy are one of the cringes, funniest parts of the episode. My family tapes jeopardy and often intentionally choose not to fast forward through these.
Oh man, these little interactions are probably the inspiration for this sub. So many end up being just so cringey. The long and pointless and the self-congratulatory ones are just too much sometimes.
I love it when someone legitimately does well, it's like the most difficult challenge on the show for some people. Usually the college challenge is pretty self-righteous.
Also, I loved when Ken had been on for so long that the show kind of just stopped trying. I feel like that would have been intimidating as a competitor.
Oddly enough, my name is also Dan Tran and I go to the same university as this guy (UNH). A few professors have asked me if I was 'the kid on jeopardy.'
The best version of this I've ever seen:
Alex: So I hear you didn't get any rain on your wedding?
Female contestant: No, but I got eight inches on my honeymoon.
This is always the most uncomfortable part of the show. You're sitting there just hoping that they don't talk about something lame and boring, and you can't help but cringe when Alex's only response is "okay" and the audience has no reaction. That being said, this isn't the worst story I've seen told.
And why does this video sound like it was recorded in an auditorium?
LUL cos he's Chinese I thought it was going to be about shitting in the street! But this story was a very exciting one: everyone remember when chow mein thought the sun was a moon. LMAO riot

It's not unnecessary. It sets the scene that they were travelling abroad, thus experienced jet-lag, leading to his confusion about the sun/moon.
Doesn't make the story any funnier, but it's still relevant.

Exactly. I subscribed to the sub for this type of content, but everyone has a different idea of what cringe is.
Snotbob · 10 points · Posted at 17:06:47 on June 5, 2016 · (Permalink)

M'cringe expert.
Snotbob · 8 points · Posted at 18:11:59 on June 6, 2016 · (Permalink)

This story is usually about twice as long, btw.

The best version of this I've ever seen: Alex: So I hear you didn't get any rain on your wedding? Female contestant: No, but I got eight inches on my honeymoon.

This is always the most uncomfortable part of the show. You're sitting there just hoping that they don't talk about something lame and boring, and you can't help but cringe when Alex's only response is "okay" and the audience has no reaction. That being said, this isn't the worst story I've seen told.
And why does this video sound like it was recorded in an auditorium?
