oh thank you !! someone once poured pig blood on the mosque in my town, half of the town reacted with " wait we have a mosque ?" but the other half were mad at the racists and supportive !!

Not, "I hope you get sent into the fiery walls of Jahannam", but, "I hope you get accepted into the fiery walls of Jahannam. You know, if you like, want to apply for it or something."
All goat jokes aside there are two options to marry in these cultures. Either you get the approval of the father/parents (which is quite important since you actually marry the whole family when you get married) or you "abduct" the girl which is a weird term to use in this case since it canโt really be an abduction if the girl is willing to go with you... it has nothing to do with paying someone that maybe happens in old villages.

What I stated is 100% in the Anatolian culture. There is definitely abduction "kaรงฤฑrmak" because my parents had this story where my dad went with his family to the father of my mom to get to know eachother and asked for his permission to marry her. My grandfather rejected it because he didnโt like my dad or something like that (dunno why). After a few more incidents where my dads father even went to him alone and asked him to accept it. My mother though wanted to marry him. When my dad heared that he canโt marry her he simply "abducted" her which basically means that my dad took her from home and both hid at my grandfathers brothers house. My mom was totally ok with that and so my moms dad changed his mind and both married. Donโt try to teach me my own culture. Btw the first option you explained is exactly what I mean, you bond with the other family because they become your family and itโs also common that you call your mother in-law, just mother. Can I ask you where you are from?

Is it though? There are lots of traditions that arenโt mine that I donโt consider to be odd. Not considering women as autonomous human beings is common, but sill odd. Odd as in, thereโs no reason men should be fully considered people, but women - from the same species - should be sub-people.
I totally agree. I study Hapkido and some of the non-western traditions bleed through and I don't find it wierd at all. Bowing? Cool. I don't do it in every day life, but I get it. Using honorific titles. Also cool.
Also, women and men are treated the same. It's about one's abilities not their gender
Traditions tend to be pretty damned weird since most of them are left over from a time when you still bought people.
My dad told the guy asking for his permission "That seems like something you should talk to her about." Because fuck tradition when you know you have a daughter and not property.
Absolutely. If someone asked my permission to marry my daughter, I'd actually be pretty upset. She's her own person. I am trying to prepare her for this world not shelter her from it like some shrinking violet. She can make her own decisions when the time is right
shuzuko ยท 33 points ยท Posted at 17:24:08 on May 21, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
My dad told me, when it was obvious that my (then) boyfriend and I were in it for the long haul, that if he asked my dad for "permission" then my dad would tell him he's not good enough for me because he obviously doesn't believe I am autonomous person, lol.
Thankfully the thought of asking permission never even crossed my fiancรฉ's mind, and we all agree that I'm not being "given away" on our wedding day either, hah.
Honestly it never even occurred to me to talk to my wife's then girlfriends Dad. All I thought to myself that day was: "I want to marry her. I should go buy a simple ring and ask her" and that's what I did. It wasn't until she asked me "Do my parents know? Did you talk to my Dad?" and I was like why the hell would I talk to your parents about this? My sister just got married and her husband didn't ask my Dad either. I'm glad it seems to be a dying tradition for a lot of people. I certainly don't have any say over who my son or daughter marry. I can always heavily disapprove, but ultimately only they can love and be with who they want.
Oddly enough traditions are frequently confused with manners.
Some people genuinely believe that if you don't ask their father first you don't respect the woman... which is so backwards because if you respecter her as a person you'd know she can make up her own mind.
It's like holding a door for someone who has their arms full. That means you are being polite. Their gender shouldn't have anything to do with it.

I'm amazed the term "marriage" has even stuck around. Everything about it was pretty danged barbaric.
Marriage was essentially the official state approval of procreation. You only had sex within a marriage to insure inheritances for legitimate children. Women changed their names to show which man they belonged too... Modern women changing their names, or even hyphenating is just keeping the last vestiges of an archaic practice. Inheritance can't be a thing since something like four in ten kids aren't "legitimate."
Yeah and it stems from the "traditional" belief that women are property that belong to their fathers until they get married (sold) and belong to their husbands.
Is it more or less weird to ask her for her father's number? Implicitly it's like asking her approval first, which is kinda cool, but then it's also.. weird
Riace ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 15:10:36 on May 21, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
There it is. The classic whataboutism. Your shitty culture is okay because a) it's been going on for a long time! and b) b-b-but other people do it too!
Being different is great. Treating women like infants that can't handle their own affairs and hundreds of years of institutionalized misogyny isn't.
Also, how in the world is western cohabitation shitty? What is that even supposed to mean?
Also, you literally wrote this five days ago: "I've never been friends with a white person, it's hard to connect with people I have nothing in common with."
So don't even try to preach about being accepting of different people.
We're are getting beyond what this post was about. We want to try and keep this comment thread on the post itself.

There is an explore page or you can look at who your friends follow. Iโm not saying thatโs what happened buts it could have happened. Not necessarily creepy
Unfortunately any sexual acts break your fast. You're meant to be abstaining from worldly pleasures but I'm sure that asking for a woman's hand in marriage is allowed.
Jahannam alum here (Class of '06). If you get accepted to the Fiery Walls, go! It will change your life. The TA for History of Fire was kind of an asshole, but everybody else was cool.
Right? Does seem kind of counter intuitive. How else would you get that number unless you've already been speaking to the girl, which means you've already broken the rules.
What does Salam mean? Is it culture appropriation if I use it? Or is just like a formal "hello"? I really liked the Salam sister at the end. It was beautifully creepy.
I know right. It's so beautiful that it means peace and that's how they greet each other but then he uses it to be mean to a random girl he thought was pretty.
I wish to say that to every person I meet for now on. Peace is literally the best thing you can wish upon someone. This just makes me even angrier at this guy for using such nice words to be jerk.
Iโm just going by my life experience Iโm half Ethiopian and speak some Amharic (another Semitic language) and we also use Selam. But Ethiopia was never occupied by the Arabs and most native Amharic speakers are Ethiopian Orthodox Christians

RegressToTheMean ยท 34 points ยท Posted at 15:55:16 on May 21, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
I totally agree. I study Hapkido and some of the non-western traditions bleed through and I don't find it wierd at all. Bowing? Cool. I don't do it in every day life, but I get it. Using honorific titles. Also cool.
Also, women and men are treated the same. It's about one's abilities not their gender

FeralHousewife ยท 91 points ยท Posted at 15:13:10 on May 21, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Traditions tend to be pretty damned weird since most of them are left over from a time when you still bought people.
My dad told the guy asking for his permission "That seems like something you should talk to her about." Because fuck tradition when you know you have a daughter and not property.
RegressToTheMean ยท 45 points ยท Posted at 15:57:32 on May 21, 2018 ยท (Permalink)

KindaNeedHelp ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 18:05:29 on May 21, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
FeralHousewife ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 18:21:32 on May 21, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
[deleted] ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 23:43:17 on May 21, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Like marriage and taking last names
FeralHousewife ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 00:02:44 on May 22, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
I'm amazed the term "marriage" has even stuck around. Everything about it was pretty danged barbaric.
Marriage was essentially the official state approval of procreation. You only had sex within a marriage to insure inheritances for legitimate children. Women changed their names to show which man they belonged too... Modern women changing their names, or even hyphenating is just keeping the last vestiges of an archaic practice. Inheritance can't be a thing since something like four in ten kids aren't "legitimate."

Kendall_Raine ยท 19 points ยท Posted at 15:40:47 on May 21, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah and it stems from the "traditional" belief that women are property that belong to their fathers until they get married (sold) and belong to their husbands.

Iโm just going by my life experience Iโm half Ethiopian and speak some Amharic (another Semitic language) and we also use Selam. But Ethiopia was never occupied by the Arabs and most native Amharic speakers are Ethiopian Orthodox Christians

I think maybe iranians in iran are still salty about the arabic occupation. even tho it was super long ago.

I'm Arab, salam isn't reserved just for Muslims. It's just a greeting. Now, assalamu alaikom is mostly used by Muslims

I'm not a Muslim, and I'm not well-versed in the Qu'ran... but I don't see how he could honestly believe that his God would be OK with him acting that way.

Wow that took a turn for the worst very quickly. I donโt get why so many people here commented that itโs fake. Every religion has creeps in it! Itโs not a mark against the religion at all.

Halal is just what's permissible in Islam.

Maybe in some cultures a โhalaal guyโ means that but people outside of those cultures are unlikely to know that it does. Itโs very likely the OP had no idea a โhalaal guyโ might refer to a food seller. Letโs give them the benefit of the doubt, eh?
Kalivha ยท 19 points ยท Posted at 13:48:37 on May 21, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
No. He's attempting to approach her the "halal way", i.e. asking for her dad's permission and not straight-out wanting to be alone with her before marriage. Check your own racism, mate.

Because "halal guy" in this context means "someone who is halal"
forefatherrabbi ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 14:05:23 on May 21, 2018 ยท (Permalink)
Halal is very similar to Kosher. It is a set of principles on how to eat, prepare, and store food.

Hello Everyone. Lets not get to far off track.
We don't really need to dig too deeply into how devote someone is in their chosen religion to understand that telling others that you "hope they go to hell" for rejecting an unsolicited proposal might make people upset.
